Malaria Eradication: FG Paying Lip Service to Ending Disease

by Folarin Kehinde August 24, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Kenny Folarin, Abuja

Malaria, a serious and sometimes fatal disease caused by a parasite that commonly infects a certain type of mosquito which feeds on humans.

People who get malaria are typically very sick with high fevers, shaking chills, and flu-like illness.

Arguably, an average Nigerian is believed to have malaria irrespective of class or status, though mostly found among the poor due to the dirty mosquito infested environment that they live.

Over the years, herbs have proven to be effective cure for malaria, but the use of herbs is gradually going into extinction due to civilization and technological advancement in health.

According to report, Nigeria suffers the world’s greatest malaria burden, with approximately 51 million cases and 207,000 deaths reported annually (approximately 30 % of the total malaria burden in Africa), while 97 % of the total population (approximately 173 million) is at risk of infection.

In 2018, Nigeria renewed its efforts by committing to raise malaria up the national priority list, including securing $300 million in new financing from the World Bank, Islamic Development Bank and African Development Bank to help finance its national malaria strategy.

Nigeria also pledged an additional $18.7million to leverage $37million from the Global Fund to distribute of 15 million mosquito nets.

The UK government also pledged
£50 million (N25,757,154,000.00) to malaria programme in Nigeria even as it pledged £9.2 million to fund new research on development of new triple Artemisinin Combination Treatments.

Despite funds plunged to eradicate malaria, findings show that Nigeria has the largest funding gap in malaria elimination in Africa.

Nigeria faces a financial gap of N504 billion ($1.4 billion) to implement its national malaria strategy by 2020, according to the 2017 World Malaria Report, a publication by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Recently, President Muhammadu Buhari inaugurated Nigeria End Malaria Council (NEMC), projecting that the successful implementation of the Council’s agenda and savings from the estimated economic burden of the disease would save Nigeria about N687 billion in 2022 and N2 trillion by 2030.

The President being optimistic noted that “Our inauguration today will therefore ensure that malaria elimination remains a priority on our agenda, with strong political commitment from leaders at all levels.

‘‘Additionally, the End Malaria Council will provide a platform to advocate for more funding to protect and sustain progress made so far by our country, and put us on a pathway to ending malaria for good,’’ the President said.

In August 2021, Nigerian government distributed 193.5 million insecticide-treated nets since the commencement of free distribution of mosquito nets in 2009 to check malaria parasites and ensure that people live healthy lives in the country.

Similarly, NGOs, and other key stakeholders in the health sectors distributed free mosquito net to Nigerians, though perceived to be free, it is still being sold in the market.

In April 2022, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that the RTS,S or mosquirix vaccine could save the lives of an additional 40,000 to 80,000 African children each year.

Read Also: FG to borrow N82 billion to buy Mosquito Nets

The vaccine, RTS,S is not just the first for malaria, but also the first developed for any parasitic disease. Parasites are much more complex than viruses or bacteria, but unfortunately the burden of malaria cases is still on the increase.

Experts are, however, worried that despite efforts to contain malaria, Nigeria loses over $1.1 billion (N645.7 billion) yearly to prevention and treatment of the disease as well as other costs.

The experts, said malaria killed no fewer than 200,000 Nigerians and afflicted 61 million others in 2021. They also said Nigeria, Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo), Tanzania and Mozambique accounted for over half of all malaria deaths.

With the indices highlighted, rhetorical questions such as how will the inauguration of the Nigeria End Malaria Council really end malaria bearing in mind the few months remaining for the President to leave office?

Or better still, do we still need more of international donors intervention or just like COVID-19, has malaria really come to stay?

written by Folarin Kehinde

Nollywood actress and politician Funke Akindele is a year older today and unlike the previous years when she celebrated with a birthday shoot involving her husband, Mr Bello aka JJC Skillz, this year she settled for a lone one.

Taking to Instagram, the mother of two boys and gubernatorial aspirant of Lagos state, Funke Akindele shared stunning photos of herself as she wished herself a happy birthday.

“Oluwaseun! Happy birthday to you OLUFUNKE AKINDELE!! The Lord will never forsake you in Jesus name! AMEN!!”.

According to report Funke Akindele had hinted her fans that she would turn 45 and was super excited about the feeling it gave her.

Kemi Filani recalls that six years after their marriage and several rumors of separation, Mr Bello finally confirmed their divorce in an early Thursday morning Instagram post.

The music producer and filmmaker revealed this on his Instagram page where he wrote, “Dear Friends and family, I need to let you know that Funke and I have separated. While it lasted, we shared many things and have created two beautiful children.

“The last two years have been tough for us. I have tried my best to fix things, but I believe it is beyond repair. 3 months ago and at Funke’s insistence, I moved out of the house and, apart from AMVCA, have not been able to get Funke to sit down amicably to discuss the future of our relationship.”

“I’m making this announcement, so the public knows we are both pursuing separate lives. We still have issues that need to be addressed, such as the custody and wellbeing of our children, which is paramount, and business interests that need to be disentangled, but I do not doubt that these will be resolved one way or the other.”

How FG Grant for Vulnerable Group Has Sustained Nigerians, Lifted Millions out of Poverty

by Folarin Kehinde August 24, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Establishment of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development by President Muhammadu Buhari in August 21, 2019 and headed by Hajia Sadiya Umar Farouq is beyond visionary (To have social protection systems that are proactive, humane, inclusive and sustainable for the improvement and general welfare of the people) but aims at lifting millions of Nigerians out of poverty through various programs of the ministry.

The President alluded to this in a video message to a high-level meeting of the UN General Assembly on poverty eradication.

According to him, “Nigeria attaches great importance to poverty eradication.

“It is my conviction that devoting our efforts towards human capital development, efficient management of our resources, greater financial inclusion, and transformation of the agricultural sector to ensure food security are crucial to poverty eradication.

“In this regard, Nigeria continues to strengthen its existing social safety net initiative by increasing access to enrollees who fit the various programmes in the scheme”.

Undoubtedly, Nigerians are currently enjoying benefits of poverty alleviation through the National Social Investment Programme which aims at enhancing the social inclusion of the poorest and vulnerable groups in the country, with programmes such as the Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programmes (GEEP), the National Home Grown School Feeding Programme, N-Power, and the Conditional Cash Transfer spread across the 36 states of the Federal and the Federal Capital Territory.

To further enhance her social welfare programmes especially to the vulnerable groups, the ministry introduced the Grant for Vulnerable Group (GVG) formerly Grant for Rural Women in 2020 to sustain the social inclusion agenda of President Buhari’s Administration.

The Ministry in June 20, 2022 in Osun State officially flagged off the disbursement of 20,000 Grant for Vulnerable Group (GVG) for Rural Women programme which aims at increasing income and productive assets of target beneficiaries

The Grant also aims at increasing access to financial capital required for economic and income-generating activities,
promote financial inclusion among unbanked and underserved populations; and contribute towards improving their living standard.

The Grant targets poor rural and peri-urban women and youths within the productive age bracket of 18-60 years with special consideration is given to the following vulnerable groups, Persons with disability
Forcibly displaced persons (internally displaced persons, returnees, etc)
Widows and orphans.

The total number of target beneficiaries for this round of the programme is 195,000 as beneficiaries were selected from all 36 States and FCT with special consideration given to the prevalence of poverty.

The programme is designed to provide a one-off grant to the poorest and most vulnerable women and youths in rural and peri-urban areas of the country

To ensure inclusiveness, the Ministry is working with relevant stakeholders to identify, select and mobilize beneficiaries, and these stakeholders include the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs (FMWA), State Governments, National Commission for Persons with Disability (NCPWD), National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and IDPs (NCFRMI), National Senior Citizen Center (NSCC) and relevant nongovernmental organizations (NGOs).

For Transparency and Accountability, the Ministry engaged the services of Payment Service Providers (PSPs), all registered by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), for disbursement of funds through United Payments, Upper Link Limited and Visual ICT Limited.

The 20,000 cash grant is paid to target beneficiaries using physical payment and through bank accounts or wallets.

Fund to be disbursed is entirely lodged in PSPs account for disbursement using clearly defined guidelines while enrolment into the programme, registration and payment of grant are all automated and a robust programme database has been deployed basic information (including biodata and biometric) on beneficiaries is required for disbursement.

The Minister in July, 2022 while speaking recently at a media parley and a re-launch Programme in Abuja on the second round of 20,000 disbursement to grant for vulnerable groups announced the inclusion of men to the grant.

Farouq stated that out of the total number of beneficiaries, 30% of men will benefit from the cash grant to encourage social inclusion, while women are 70%, and 15% of the total beneficiaries must be Persons with disabilities.

In addition, about 15% of the total number of beneficiaries is specifically allocated to the segment of the population with special needs, including Persons with Disability (PWDs) and senior citizens in the Country, forcibly displaced persons (internally displaced persons, returnees, etc), Widows and orphans.

The Programme is targeted at poor rural and peri-urban women and men within the productive age of 18 and above.

Farouq noted that the re-launched programme which was hitherto known as Cash Grant for Rural Women will now be known as Grant for Vulnerable Groups to encourage inclusivity.

Explaining she said “Our target in the FCT is to disburse the grant to over 2,900 beneficiaries across the 6 Area Councils which is in line with President Muhammadu Buhari’s social inclusion.

She alluded to the fact that the prorgramme has impacted positively on the lives of the poor and vulnerable in Nigeria.

“I have personally witnessed the life-changing experiences of people who lived below the poverty line and those that are vulnerable to shocks”.

While the grant disbursement is ongoing, 5570 Vulnerable Groups in Bayelsa has also received the Cash Grant.

Presently, the National Social Investment Programmes has reduced the poverty index in the country to 43% which was hitherto 70%, despite this feat, President Muhammadu Buhari led administration is still not resting on its oars to ensure that Nigeria’s poverty index is reduced by over 20%.

Food Security: Smallholder Farmers in the North East Benefits from Sterling Bank Loans

by Folarin Kehinde August 18, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Kenny Folarin, Abuja

Hundreds of Smallholder Farmers the north east has benefited from Sterling Bank Agric loans to boost food security, productivity and increase yield.

The Communications Manager, Rural Resilience Activity, Ayodele Adesanmi disclosed this in a press statement on Thursday.

According to the statement, 262 participants received a Sterling Bank Agric loan to boost their productivity and increase yields through the USAID funded Feed the Future Nigeria Rural Resilience Activity, implemented by Mercy Corps, in collaboration with the International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC) and Save the Children International (SCI).

It would be recall that On August 16, 2022, in Gombe State, the bank and the Rural Resilience Activity launched a disbursement ceremony to celebrate the significant contribution of N82.4 million in loans.

Recipients included women and youth farmers and agribusiness owners in the Northeast states of Gombe and Yobe.

Many belong to cooperatives supported by the Motherhen Development Foundation (in Akko and Kwami, Gombe State and in Yobe) and the Sustainable Household Income and Enhanced Livelihoods initiative.

During the disbursement ceremony, the Group Head, Agric Finance & Solid Minerals Group of Sterling Bank, Dr. Olushola Obikanye, said

“Sterling Bank is proud to lead this critical effort at rebuilding the economic fortunes of Northeast Nigeria by providing appropriate and demand driven financial services that align with the aspirations of women and young people in the region and across Nigeria who are often excluded from financial services.

Obikanye explained that the partnership will significantly improve the living standards of farmers and other vulnerable people by boosting food sufficiency and poverty reduction as a prerequisite for de-escalation of insecurity and conflict in the North-East.

“The loans are in response to rising food insecurity and inflation, which are attributed to challenges that predate the Russian invasion of Ukraine such as the economic impacts of Covid-19 as well as other macro-economic conditions like misguided trade, agricultural, and monetary policies”. He added.

Similarly, In December 2020, Mercy Corps signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Sterling Bank to increase access to finance and working capital for smallholder farming households.

Since then, Sterling Bank has been working with the Rural Resilience Activity to address constraints to agricultural lending such as loan repayment, financial illiteracy, access to higher-value markets, and information around climate-related risks.

Speaking on the gains of the partnerships, Acting Country Director of Mercy Corps Nigeria, Mrs. Adesola Osuji, said, ” The loan disbursement to the women-led farmers’ cooperatives will not only foster financial security and increase economic opportunities for the women but also contribute to advancing food security and nutrition, and to breaking the bias against women.

“It will further project women as key stakeholders in the food industry.”

“We are proud to be working hand in hand with Sterling Bank to support more than 204 maize producers and nearly 300 hectares of land in Akko and Kwami LGAs of Gombe State, as well as 58 cowpea producers in Yobe State to access agricultural inputs and tractors to increase land productivity and jointly tackle food insecurity.

We look forward to ensuring that more farmers in the North East continue to gain access to finance and working capital,” said Mrs Margarita Aswani, the Chief of Party, Feed the Future Nigeria Rural Resilience Activity.

The Sterling Bank and Mercy Corps interventions target smallholder farmers and microenterprises working in the agricultural and non-agricultural sectors with a particular interest in young people and women.

The scope covers maize, cowpea, groundnuts, rice production, and small ruminants. The partnership between the two organizations is expected to benefit more farmers groups in the targeted Northeast states in the near future.

Urinating After Sexual Intercourse Does Not Stop Pregnancy, STDs – Health Expert

by Folarin Kehinde August 18, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Following widely spread believe,
Nigerians have been advised to disregard the popular notion that urinating immediately after sexual intercourse prevents the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

This is as it has also been disclosed that urinating after sexual intercourse is not a form of contraception and will not prevent pregnancy from occurring.

Speaking with DAILY POST on Sunday, Mrs Esther Oke, a Public Health Nurse, stated that these were popular beliefs that had been transferred from one generation to the other which still held sway.

According to her, the task of convincing the majority of Nigerians especially the sexually active ones to disregard these beliefs will be odious.

She noted that the belief was steeped in the native culture and knowledge of the people and mothers tend to pass this information to their young daughters.

Mrs Oke lamented that despite the advancement in technology and spread of innovations and accessibility of information, the sexually active population still harbour a series of beliefs bordering on such.

She hinted that these systems of local beliefs are still persevering because most young people despite their level of education still find it difficult to seek sexual counselling.

In the end, she observed, the system of beliefs continues in a vicious cycle.

“The only advantage of urinating immediately after sex is that it does help in reducing harmful bacteria that may have lodged in the female urethra during penetrative sex.

“Do not get me wrong here, the female urethra harbours bacteria but there is the possibility of introducing harmful ones through sexual contact with the male and urinating acts to flush these away.”
