Flood: Over 100,000 Nigerians Displaced As Cameroon Opens Dam – Agency

by Folarin Kehinde September 20, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Republic of Cameroon’s Lagdo Dam’s managers have allowed surplus water to drain from the dam.

Over 100,000 Nigerians have been displaced, 300 have died, and more than 500,000 have been impacted in the past few months due to the recent rainfall in Nigeria and the opening of the dam.

This was revealed by data provided on Monday in Abuja during an emergency technical conference on the flood situation across the nation by the National Emergency Management Agency and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency.

“Based on our communication with NIHSA, the Lagdo Dam operators in the Republic of Cameroon, had commenced the release of excess water from the reservoir on September 13, 2022,” the Director-General, NEMA, Mustapha Ahmed, stated while speaking at the meeting,” he said.

He added, “We are aware that the released water cascades down into Nigeria, through River Benue and its tributaries, thereby overwhelming communities that have already been impacted by heavy rainfall.

“The released water complicates the situation further downstream, as Nigeria’s inland reservoirs including Kainji, Jebba and Shiroro, are also expected to overflow between now and October ending.

“According to NIHSA, Kainji and Jebba dams have already started spilling exess water from their reservoirs. This will have serious consequences on frontline states and communities along the courses of rivers Niger and Benue.”

The states most likely to be impacted, according to Ahmed, are Adamawa, Taraba, Benue, Niger, Nasarawa, Kebbi, and Kogi.

Additionally, he noted that some Niger-Delta states, such as Edo, Delta, Anambra, Cross-River, Rivers, and Bayelsa, were likely to witness severe flooding as a result of the region’s above-average rainfall and the combined waters of the Niger and Benue rivers as they flow into the area.

2023: It is not yet your time, Orji Kalu tells Igbos

by Folarin Kehinde September 20, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Chief Whip of the Senate, Orji Uzor Kalu, says it will be difficult for any Igbo to win the presidency without zoning the seat to the South East.

Kalu disclosed this while briefing reporters at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja on Tuesday.

He said the presidency is not a regional issue and could only be won with the support of other geo-political zones.

He, therefore, urged his fellow politicians from the South East eyeing the highest office to wait for another time when major political parties would agree to zone the ticket to the region.

“Presidency is not a regional issue. I asked the political parties to zone the presidency to the South East. When they didn’t do that, and since the presidency is not a regional issue, I had to withdraw.

I have no problem with the Igbo man being president. But we have to do it with other Nigerians. If we don’t do it with other Nigerians, it is not going to work, no matter how popular you are. It’s the president of Nigeria, not the president of Igboland.

“I’m an Igbo man to the core. I’m also a Nigerian to the core. If anyone from the Southeast had been nominated for the presidency, I would have been the one. So, it’s a party business. I have no grudges against anybody who is running”, he said.

Nigeria’s Debt Hits N42.8trillion – DMO

by Folarin Kehinde September 20, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Nigeria’s total public debt stock rose from N41.60trillion (100.07 billion dollars) in March to N42.84trillion (103.31 billion dollars) in June.

The Debt Management Office (DMO), led by Patience Oniha, provided the figure in a statement on Tuesday.

The total debt represents the domestic and external debt stocks of the Federal Government, the 36 State Governments and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Though the foreign component of the debt remained at the same level of N16.61trillion (39.96 billion dollars), the local component increased to N26.23trillion (63.24 billion dollars).

The DMO noted that more than 58 per cent of the external debt stock are concessional and semi-concessional loans.

They were obtained from the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, Afrexim and African Development Bank, and countries including Germany, China, Japan, India and France.

The total domestic debt stock went up from N24.98trillion (60.1billion dollars) in March to N26.23 trillion (63.24 billion dollars) in June.

This followed Federal Government’s borrowings to part-finance the deficit in the 2022 Appropriation (Repeal and Enactment) Act, as well as new borrowings by state governments and the FCT.

“The Debt-to-GDP as at June 30, was 23.06 per cent compared to the ratio of 23.27 as at March 30. It remains within Nigeria’s self-imposed limit of 40 per cent”, the statement added.

ASUU strike: Female Students now Pregnant, while Males now Mechanics – NANS

by Folarin Kehinde September 20, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has criticised the Federal Government for the ongoing seven-month-long strike embarked on by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.

NANS said the strike has endangered the fundamental human right of Nigerian students, with regard to access to education.

Comrade Olusesi Tolulope Samson, Lagos NANS chairman, disclosed this on Arise TV morning show on Tuesday while fielding questions on the students’ protest at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, on Monday.

He said that the strike has affected the future of their members, noting that some male students have become mechanics; some learning printing works; while some female students have got pregnant.

“The Federal Government has jeopardised and bastardised the fundamental human right of the Nigerian students. Some came to the protest yesterday with their ID cards, learning mechanics now. Some are learning printing works, while some female students are pregnant,” he said.

He noted that the protest staged at the airport was to alert the international community that something has been going wrong in Nigeria concerning education.

The student leader said their demand was for the universities to be reopened, adding that the students have been keeping their fingers crossed on what would be the outcome of a proposed meeting between the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, and the leadership of ASUU.

NILEST Lament High Consumption of ponmo, Propose Ban

by Folarin Kehinde September 19, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Nigerian Institute of Leather and Science Technology (NILEST) says it is proposing a legislation to ban the consumption of animal skin, locally known as ponmo, in the country.

The NILEST Zaria’s Director-General, Professor Muhammad Yakubu, stated on Sunday in Abuja that the legislation was required to resurrect the nation’s deadlocked leather sector.

He believed that animal skin consumption, which has no nutritional value, ought to end in order to save the industry and advance the economy of the country.

“To the best of my knowledge, Nigerians are the only people in the world that overvalue skin as food, after all ponmo has no nutritional value,” he said.

The DG stated that the institute would work with industry stakeholders to approach the National Assembly and state legislatures to introduce legislation outlawing the consumption of Pomo.

“At one point, there was a motion before the two chambers of the National Assembly, it was debated, but I don’t know how the matter was thrown away,” he said.

According to him, the consumption of animal skin is partly responsible for the present comatose state of tanneries in Nigeria.

“If we get our tanneries, our footwear and leather production working well in Nigeria, people will hardly get ponmo to buy and eat,’’ Mr Yakubu said.

The DG also said that the current National Leather Policy had addressed some fundamental problems of the sector.

“When implemented fully, it would turn around most of the comatose tanneries and ginger greater output in production,’’ he said.

He appealed to stakeholders to support the legislation and the national leather policy to revive the sector.

NILEST was set up to promote leather production as provided in the Agricultural Research Institute Act of 1975.

It conducts research into all aspects of production and products of leather and utilization of local tanning materials in the country.

Queen Elizabeth finally buried at Windsor castle

by Folarin Kehinde September 19, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Queen Elizabeth has been buried at Windsor Castle after her funeral procession went through the streets of London with huge crowds lining the route.

Windsor, where the Queen broadcast to the nation in wartime and spent so much of her time throughout her life, is her final resting place.

The Queen’s coffin was followed by King Charles, the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Sussex, the Duke of York, and Princess Royal during its procession to Wellington Arch.

The route is a three-mile (4.82km), tree-lined avenue leading from Snow Hill – where Henry VIII is said to have awaited news of the execution of his second wife, Anne Boleyn – through Windsor Great Park towards the castle itself.

The route was lined by the armed forces from Westminster Abbey to the top of Constitution Hill at the Commonwealth memorial gates.

Windsor Castle is a royal residence at Windsor in the English county of Berkshire.

It is strongly associated with the English and succeeding British Royal Family, and embodies almost a millennium of architectural history, NAN reports.

Roger Federer to Retire from Tennis

by Folarin Kehinde September 15, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Tennis legend Roger Federer has announced he will retire from the sport at the age of 41.

Federer has confirmed the last tournament of his illustrious career will be the Laver Cup in London, scheduled to be held at the 02 next weekend.

The Swiss maestro – who won a total of 20 Grand Slams, the third highest men’s tally of all time – retires as one of the greatest to ever play the game.

Federer’s last appearance came at last year’s Wimbledon, where he reached the quarter-finals. His final Grand Slam triumph was at the 2018 Australian Open.

He claimed 103 singles titles on the ATP tour and was world number one for 237 weeks between February 2004 and August 2008, which remains a record.

Federer’s decision follows a turbulent period for the Swiss star, who has undergone three knee surgeries in a desperate attempt to return to his former glories.

His injuries have limited his appearances on tour and he has played in just three of the 11 Grand Slams staged since the start of 2020.

Federer is set to feature in exhibition matches but the Laver Cup, where he will represent Team Europe, will be his last competition on the ATP tour.

‘To my tennis family and beyond, of all the gifts that tennis has given me over the years, the greatest, without a doubt, has been the people I’ve met along the way: my friends, my competitors, and most of all the fans who give the sport its life,’ Federer said.

‘Today, I want to share some news with all of you. As many of you know, the past three years have presented me with challenges in the form of injuries and surgeries.

I’ve worked hard to return to full competitive form. But I also know my body’s capacity and limits, and its message to me lately has been clear.

Immunization: FG Approves Commercial Production of Vaccines

by Folarin Kehinde September 14, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire on Wednesday, disclosed that the Federal Executive Council, FEC, has approved the production of vaccines in commercial quantity to support routine immunization programmes in the country.

The FEC meeting chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari also deliberated on the partnership deal which has been sealed with an Indian firm, Serum Institute of India.

In the new arrangement, Bio Vaccine Nigeria, an indigenous public firm will control 15 percent of the market share, which will be used for contract manufacturing of those vaccines as an initial step over the next few years when the plant in Nigeria will start to work.

Giving further details shortly after the meeting, Ehanire said, “Council considered a memorandum from the Ministry of Health today, which has to do with the first stage in indigenizing vaccine production in Nigeria, we are talking first of all the routine vaccines, the one to call the standard programme on immunization, not COVID-19 vaccine.

“As you know, the government has a joint venture agreement formed with a company called Bio vaccine Nigeria limited, which is to start producing vaccines domestically.

“Now, they are in sourcing for international partners, who will join them and give them the technology transfer that they require. And after going to various countries, including South Africa and Indonesia, they settled with the Serum Institute of India, which will now be the technical partner to support them in setting up the vaccine production plant in Nigeria.

“But of course, the Serum Institute of India as you know is the largest vaccine producer in the world, and also has vaccines that are approved by World Health Organization”.

So all of our countries, including UNICEF, procures from Serum Institute of India, and in the partnership, Serum Institute of India requires that you must have a certain order. It will help you to produce in Nigeria who will buy and that’s what we call market access because vaccines are not things you put on the shelves where people will go and buy like Panadol.

They have been purchased by the government and they are supposed to be administered by the government through the Primary Health Care Development Agency.

“So that arrangement has now been approved by the Federal Executive Council for Bio Vaccine Nigeria to have 15 percent of the market share, which will be used for contract manufacturing of those vaccines as an initial step over the next few years when the plant in Nigeria starts to work. So that was the approval that council gave today”.

Commonwealth Without Visa Free to Nigerians, Useless – Sowore

by Folarin Kehinde September 14, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

By Kenny Folarin, Abuja

The Presidential Candidate, African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore has said Nigeria being among the Commonwealth nations without visa free entry to other Commonwealth nations is unfounded and useless.

Sowore responding to questions on how to change the narrative of the Nigerian Passport in a monitored interview by LEADING REPORTERS with Classic FM on Monday stated that the Nigerian Passport does not have to change but only have to change the nation to earn respect.

“When the queen died I made a tweet which was controversial to lots of people that nobody should mourn the queen”

“It is not our business to do that, we should be thinking about how to dissolve the Commonwealth of Nations which has 156 countries of which as a Nigerian you cannot travel without a visa.”

“We are the only common people in the Commonwealth, alumni of formerly colonized countries so we are still a subject of the queen.”

“Dissolve the Commonwealth what is it doing for us and if we are not dissolving it and we are going to be part of it, let every nations in the Commonwealth be visa free to Nigerians so that we can go to the Commonwealth and know that it is common”.

Sowore added that these are foreign policies that Nigerians should push for to be respected among committee of nations rather than being humiliated.

“People must have their dignity back so that they can go anywhere they want without being humiliated because the humiliation for Nigerian is just too much even in places that we don’t deserve it”.

Sowore however identified education, security and energy as area of focus if elected as President in 2023 noted that politicians are underfunding the education sector in order to have control over the citizens and have total power over them.

Explaining, he said “there is a policy of mass miseducation over the years and the people who are miseducating Nigerians through inadequate funding know that they wanted to achieve a citizenry that is easy to manipulate and control”.

“When people are educated they are difficult to mismanage and control so the military started by making sure that education was not adequately funded what is the result today?, 20 million children according to UNICEF are out of school, how do we get them back into the classroom?

“There has to be a policy of mass education and one of the things that I have adopted is virtual education, I want to create virtual classrooms that can be found everywhere such that where schools are not possible, people can learn in a football viewing centre and another thing is that we should also jettison the idea of basic education, it is not going to work for us, the sector should be massively funded too”. He added.
