Breaking: UK Prime Minister Liz Truss Resigns

by Folarin Kehinde October 20, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

British Prime Minister Liz Truss had been struggling to keep her grip on power after a string of political tribulations since she came to office. She announced her resignation on Thursday.
In a short statement to the media, UK Prime Minister Liz Truss on Thursday announced an end to her time in office — after just over six weeks in the job.

Truss has faced mounting criticism after a tax-cutting mini budget unraveled spectacularly last month, sending markets and the pound sterling into freefall.

Truss said she had come into office at a time of great economic and international instability, adding: “I recognize, given the situation I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party.”

The head of the 1922 Committee of Conservative Party lawmakers Graham Brady visited the prime minister at her 10 Downing Street residence and office on Thursday. The committee arranges contests for a change of leader, and Brady’s role is to gauge whether or not the prime minister still has the support of Tory members of parliament.

Flooding in Nigeria Increases Risks of Disease Outbreaks’ – WaterAid

by Folarin Kehinde October 19, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Nigeria has been hit by devastating flooding over the past weeks, which reportedly claimed the lives of at least 600 people, and displaced hundreds of thousands of people after their homes were inundated.

With rains expected to continue over the next days, below is a statement by Abu Jibril, Acting Country Director of WaterAid in Nigeria. He said:

“The flooding has increased the risks for communities in flood prone regions, in a country where an estimated 38 million people are still forced to defecate in the open, and tens of millions more have very limited access to other forms of sanitation.

“When the water comes like it has now, washing away human waste, it raises the risk of disease outbreaks that could further cost lives and impoverish citizens. We need to act fast to avoid these outbreaks.”

“People who have been forced from their homes need food and shelter, but they also need access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene. The number of displaced people forced to live in camps where access to safe water and good sanitation is further compromised have increased, with women and children most vulnerable and worst affected. A decent toilet and a bar of soap can literally save lives now, as they prevent diseases from breaking out.”

“With climate change upon us, many people in Nigeria are already living on the frontline of the crisis – and it’s likely to get worse.

“The Government of Nigeria has started a campaign to stop people from defecating in the open, but we also need support from international governments and donors to ensure communities who did the least to cause this crisis, are able to adapt to the changing circumstances and build resilience against future shocks.

“Healthy communities need the basics: shelter, food, but also safe water to drink and well managed toilets. We need to start investing in that, and we need to do it yesterday.”

Amidst Flood Devastation in Rivers, Wike doles out N300m to Lagos State officials’ wives

by Folarin Kehinde October 19, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike has donated the sum of N300 million to the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials, COWLSO.

Governor Wike announced the donation at the ongoing 22nd National Women’s Conference (NWC) holding in Lagos.

The donation is coming on the backdrop of recent devastating flood that has submerged some communities in the State, rendering thousands homeless, and without food.

Recall that over 200 communities in four local councils of Rivers State, namely – Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni (ONELGA), Ahoada West, Ahoada East and Abual Odual – have been displaced by ravaging flood.

In an address at the occasion, Wike said the involvement of women in politics and decision-making in Lagos State is what is making it continue to set the pace in the country.

He said he was amazed at all that COWLSO is doing in Lagos State and promised to replicate all that he had learnt from the conference in his State as well.

Governor Wike also used the opportunity to declare total support for the re-election bid of Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in the 2023 general elections.

Avoid Ekiti, FRSC warns Abuja, Lagos Travelers

by Folarin Kehinde October 19, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has issued an advisory to travelers from Abuja and Lagos.

Acting Corps Marshal, Dauda Biu informed the public on Tuesday through the Corps Public Education Officer (CPEO), Bisi Kazeem.

The agency advised vehicle owners and commuters from Abuja, via Ondo, to ply Akure-Ondo-Ife-Ibadan or Lagos-Ibadan-Ife-Ondo-Ore-Benin.

Those traveling from Lagos and other parts in the South-West, also through Ondo, to the North were asked to ply same route.

The FRSC noted that the advisory was issued because the Igbara-Oke-Ilara-Mokin route is totally blocked for now.

Biu assured that operatives and logistics have been adequately deployed to ensure speedy removal of the obstructions on that route for ease of movement.

Factors including bad roads and the heavy floods Nigerians are witnessing, the worst in a decade, have made some routes impassable.

Sheraton Shutdown: Over 291 Workers to be Sacked

by Folarin Kehinde October 19, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The former managers of Sheraton Hotel, Marriott International, have accused Capital Hotels Plc of shutting down the hotel without due notice.

Sheraton ownership was transferred after 22 Hospitality acquired 1,611,995,510 Ordinary Shares of 50 kobo each representing 51 per cent shares.

They bought additional 456,641,337, and 21,562,293 Ordinary Shares of 50 kobo each representing 14.45% and 0.68% of the equity share capital of the company from Hans Gremlin Nigeria Limited and Associated Ventures International Limited.

This gives 22 Hospitality 66.13 per cent stake in the Capital Hotel.

Capital Hotel board was consequently dissolved while Ramesh Kansagra was also elected the new Chairman of the Board of Directors.

The Area Vice President, Sub-Saharan Africa for Marriott International, Richard Collins, said in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja that the closure of the hotel is causing unnecessary distress to employees and significant disruption to guests, suppliers and other partners.

He said, “We are deeply concerned with the decision taken by the owners of the Sheraton Abuja Hotel, to close the hotel within a short time frame, causing unnecessary distress to employees and significant disruption to guests, suppliers and other partners.

“We disagree with the manner in which the owners, Capital Hotels Plc, have hurried the decision to close the hotel, without making sufficient arrangements for the 291 hotel employees, some of which have worked at this iconic property for many decades.

“The wellbeing of hotel employees is our first priority and we will continue to do our best to support them during this difficult period,.’

But the management of Capital Hotels Plc (CHP), alleged that the hotel union members protested against Marriott for the non-payment of their severance packages as agreed.

Capiral Hotel said, “The management of the hotel also assured that most of the employees would be reabsorbed upon reopening of the hotel, dowsing the fears of job loss.

“This commitment from the management is in addition to the mouthwatering severance package that the employees would be receiving as a consequence of the temporary closure.

“This development is coming in the wake of the acquisition of majority stake in Capital Hotel plc, owners of the hotel, by 22 Hospitality Limited.”

Calabar Carnival Returns After Two Years Break

by Folarin Kehinde October 19, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

After a two-year hiatus caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the Calabar Carnival is set to be staged December 2022.

The Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Cross River State, Eric Anderson, who confirmed the development, gave reasons for the resumption of the festival during a press briefing.

He said, “Cross River is among the committee of carnival producers in the world. Carnivals were shut down worldwide in the last two years because of COVID-19.

“As we speak, carnivals worldwide have started production, and we can see that the Covid-19 protocols have been relaxed. As a member of the committee, we feel we should also resume as well. Tourism is one aspect of culture that has put Cross River on the World Tourism Map.”

A company, Okhma Global, was also appointed to lead marketing for the 2022 Calabar Carnival.

Speaking during the event, the company’s Chief Executive Officer, Mary Ephraim- Egbas, while expressing delight at the vote of confidence the Carnival planning committee reposed on the company, said, “We are a team of agile and youthful people governed by five core values, resilience, excellence, innovative, global, and nurturing.

“We worked with the Carnival Calabar pre-covid, for four years prior to this year, so to be selected to lead marketing this year again goes to show there is something we’ve gotten right. We hope to build on that and exceed our expectations.”

BMW recalls motorcycles with faulty shock absorbers, FRSC warns against purchase

by Folarin Kehinde October 19, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Automobile manufacturing company, BMW China has recalled its K1600 and K1600 GT Motorcycles with production dates of between 28 June, 2017 to 19 September, 2018 due to faulty shock absorbers.

The Federal Road Safety Corps made this call to the motoring public, particularly those who are presently using aforementioned motorcycles by BMW.

According to the memo circulated by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the BMW (China) Automobile Trading Company Limited disclosed that the withdrawal of the motorbikes started from 7 September, 2022.

In the statement, the withdrawal was premised on the fact that the hinged tie rods at the rear shock absorber could not reach the designed strength and may break over time, posing a safety hazard.

The Acting Corps Marshal, Dauda Ali Biu, by this notice, warned the general public, particularly dealers and riders of these categories of motorcycles, to stop selling or using the identified motorcycles on Nigerian roads so as to avoid any accident.

Tinubu Begins Campaign, Unveils Manifesto Friday

by Folarin Kehinde October 19, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The All Progressives Congress has concluded arrangements to kick off its campaign and unveil the policy document of its presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Friday.

According to report, source close to President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has been given the honour of launching the manifesto and inaugurating the Presidential Campaign Council at the presidential villa.

He said that the inauguration, which is expected to herald the official kick-off of the campaign, would be conducted after a short address by the president, who is also the chairman of the campaign council.

Buhari, in his capacity as the chairman, will inaugurate the PCC and unveil the policy document of Tinubu. There are also strong indications that the choice of Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, which was earlier chosen as the official venue for the campaign kick-off, will give way to a new one.

“For now, I can say all the grey areas causing disaffection among the APC National Working Committee and the governors have been taken care of in the newly harmonised campaign council list,” the source said.

The development comes hours after Tinubu disclosed on Tuesday that the majority of Buhari’s achievements are largely unappreciated by Nigerians.

The former Lagos State governor made the clarification in a goodwill message that he delivered at the ongoing three-day ministerial retreat for Ministers and Permanent Secretaries in Abuja.

A concerned Tinubu made a case for the president, saying Nigerians should understand that he inherited the baggage of a national problem ranging from insecurity to corruption from the previous government.

When contacted, the Director of Media and Publicity for the Tinubu-Shettima Presidential Campaign Council confirmed the report.

He, however, declined to comment further on the choice of venue and notable names in the newly-harmonised list of campaign council members, among others.

“Both the campaign council and the manifesto will be launched on Friday. But I don’t have details on the other questions you raised,” he stated.

Tinubu last Friday unveiled a 422-man committee comprising political heavyweights and other notable members to pilot the various sub-committees of the campaign council.
