He said adequate security has been put in place to ensure the safety of passengers. The Minister, however, did not give any specific date for the resumption.

Yahaya Bello Responsible for Owo Massacre, Kuje Bombing, Akpoti-
Uduaghan Claims

by Folarin Kehinde November 7, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

A former governorship candidate in Kogi State, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has accused Governor Yahaya Bello of being responsible for the Owo Church massacre in Ondo State and the Kuje Prison break in Abuja.

Governor Bello has been at loggerhead with Apkoti-Uduaghan for some time now. The state governor had last week declared her wanted.

Apkoti-Uduaghan had alleged that the governor went around different prisons in the country releasing hardened criminals, especially those of them from Ebira.

She claimed one of such prisoners is known as Safiyu, who she alleged Governor Bello deployed to carry out the Kuje Prison break and Owo massacre.

Appearing on Arise Television’s Morning Show yesterday, Apkoti-Uduaghan, who is the Senatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for Kogi Central, said: “I was in California because I left a day after my primary election and I only returned to Nigeria on the 20th of August.

“And at the time of these attacks (Kuje Prison and Owo massacre), Safiyu was with Yahaya Bello. He was in the Government House every day.

“He was living in the house of the Chief of Staff. So, if anybody should be held responsible for the Owo massacre and Kuje Prison break, it should be Yahaya Bello that should have questions to answer in conjunction with the Chief of Staff himself because they released him from prison for God knows what.

“I even got to know that Safiyu was on death row. I happened to know he was a hardened criminal on death row but Bello freed him just before the 2019 election. Why he was freed and the nature of his freedom is left for Yahaya Bello to explain.”

On how a governor could release a prisoner in a federal prison, Apkoti-Uduaghan said: “That’s one thing with Yahaya Bello. He knows how to get the ills done using the network.

“I’m actually surprised at how he could have such powers. He has also gone around the prisons in the country releasing hardened Ebira prisoners. People from our own tribe.

“This is why we have such a high rate of criminality in Nigeria. I got to know that a few months ago, the governor called on Safiyu again to carry out a series of attacks,” she alleged.

Nigerian media Must Reject Political Intimidation

by Folarin Kehinde November 7, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

By Tonnie Iredia

This year’s convocation lecture of the fast growing Edo State University, Uzairue, the 4th since its inception has been held at the university campus in Uzairue, Etsako local government area of Edo state. The topic was ‘Rethinking the role of mainstream and social media in national development’- a topic which aptly suited the times coming some 48 hours after this year’s International day to end impunity for crimes against journalists. The occasion gave me the opportunity as the convocation lecturer to make the point that in spite of hostility towards the media by politicians using the law enforcement agencies, Nigerian journalists must continue to push for more development in their country. They must reject political intimidation while remaining steadfast in meeting the obligation of their chosen profession. They did it before under a more severe and tense atmosphere and can do it better now if they are strategic and organized.

At several junctions in Nigeria’s history, the media has always faced persecution for fighting a noble cause in the interest of the nation. During the colonial era for instance, the anti-colonial posture of Nigerian activists made up mostly of journalists was countered by a plethora of legal anti-media provisions beginning with the Newspapers Ordinance No, 10 of 1903. The law required every prospective newspaper proprietor to make, sign and swear affidavits containing their addresses and those of their printers and publishers before embarking on any newspaper production. It also required each media proprietor, to execute a bond of 250 pounds with two sureties. This was to make it easy to trace any person who breached any of the provisions of the ordinance. Expectedly, many journalists were harassed, fined and jailed for their critical writings against alien rule.

At independence when everyone had imagined that peace had eventually come, media battles for the development of the nation did not abate. This time, the media was obliged to reflect the frustrations of Nigerians over the anti-democratic attitudes of the indigenous leaders of the first republic who criminalized dissent and rejected the democratic principles of accountability and credible elections. In 1961, regional elections in the North and the East were massively rigged. The 1964 elections into the federal house of representatives and the nation-wide workers strike which followed in the year were all poorly managed. The violence which greeted the fake election results in the 1965 elections in Western Nigeria gave the media the impetus to mount huge criticisms against the government of the day. This helped the military to seize political power in 1966.

The rigidity of military disposition showed through several military coups that the media would have to fight the military. Several decrees promulgated by the military put both the media and the average Nigerian in jeopardy. Activists were detained without trial while the few kangaroo prosecutions organized by the military were done using a strange law requiring accused persons and not the prosecution to prove innocence. Publishing strong editorials criticising the highhandedness of the military led to the banning of the circulation of several newspapers. Many journalists got bruised but the media survived. The implication of this therefore is that if the media could survive a battle with armed military leaders, nothing can successfully intimidate its professionals from continuing to act as the watch-dog and mirror of society as well as the voice of the voiceless.

Luckily two major developments have since occurred to embolden the media. To start with, for the first time in the history of Nigeria, the media was in 1999 specifically mandated to hold leaders accountable to the people. This assignment was embedded in the highest law of the land – the constitution, specifically Section 22. The provision makes sense because the sovereignty of the people is the highest feature of democracy; the rationale being that anyone in power is there to represent the people. Every leader ought to be accountable to the people. In other words, Nigerian media professionals are since 1999, legally empowered to take-on a function they assumed on their own in the past. There is thus no reason why the journalists of today should allow themselves to be intimidated from carrying out a constitutional assignment.

The second strong point which seamlessly strengthens the media is the efficacy of the digital platforms of the social media. Unlike the mainstream media, social media platforms are exceedingly pervasive. In the absence of allocation of frequencies used by government to curtail the broadcast media, they have no limitations as to scope of operations. The social media is interactive and conversational thereby attracting public participation. It is true that its availability for use by all stands the risk of its being used to propagate fake news and misinformation but media professionals who are trained to practice journalism know what to do to use the new media form to perform well. The digital platforms are quite useful for speedy gathering and prompt delivery of information to the public. The only caution is that while using the platforms, media professionals should always remember the highest ethical value of their profession which is the sanctity of truth. Put differently, the media should use the platforms provided they ascertain the veracity of every material they decide to use.

There is no better time than now for the Nigerian media to rise to rescue the nation. Apart from Nigeria’s current insecurity, the highest since its existence, the country has suddenly become the poverty capital of the world. It is time to halt the nation’s poor governance and in the spirit of section 22 of our constitution compel our politicians to stop replacing governance with unending electioneering campaigns. Ordinarily, this would not have been the best time to insist on this, because we are now in the normal time allocated to electioneering but we need to remember that the current electioneering began as soon the last elections ended. Politicians did not wait for the electoral body to signal the beginning of campaigns for the 2023 elections. There are indeed some politicians who are already allowing the 2027 contests to consume them right now. The media should never allow the campaign against social media by politicians to discourage them from using the digital platforms to create some political sanity in the country.

It is time for the leadership of the media at all levels to insist that when a journalist raises an allegation against a political leader, the subsisting collusion between government officials and the security agencies to immediately convert the allegation into a charge of treason and terrorism should stop. The way forward is for the allegation to be investigated. If it is false, the law should take its course and the journalist should be duly penalized. The present attitude of sweeping the allegation under the carpet by incarcerating the maker is not in the interest of the nation. It only festers unbridled corruption and impunity. By virtue of section 35 of our constitution, no security agency has a right to detain an accused person beyond 48 hours without a court order as they have been doing in Cross River, Imo and Ebonyi states. No political leader has a right to order the detention of journalists simply because the materials published by them are not in his favour. As I stated at Edo University last Friday, section 308 of our constitution gives immunity from prosecution to president and his vice as well as governors and their deputies while they are in office but that immunity from prosecution cannot be extended to immunity from criticism or immunity from being held accountable to the people.

The Nigerian Union of Journalists NUJ and the Nigerian Guild of Editors NGE must immediate depart from mundane unionism and offer robust leadership to their members. Both bodies must combine to take-on any authority that deprives the media from carrying out the assignment given to it by the constitution. This is electioneering time, the media particularly television should stop providing valuable air time to party representatives to tell us their different sides to intra or inter party conflicts. Such time should be given at all times between now and voting day to throw light on party manifestos and strategies for implementing them. Nigerians have since become tired of hearing campaigns that are devoid of the real issues that can uplift our nation.

Why Lady Publicly Reject Ooni Of Ife’s Marriage Proposal

by Folarin Kehinde November 5, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

One Laide Lanre-Badmus popularly known as LLB has publicly rejected the Ooni of Ife’s marriage proposal.

Born on July 10, 1981, the 41-year-old is a graduate of Politics and International Relations from Olabisi Onabanjo University. She is also armed with a diploma in Law from Leads City University.

Laide Lanre-Badmus and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi have been romantically linked for some time now. They were so smitten by each other that everyone in the palace and outside thought this would end up in marriage, however, she rejected his marriage proposal.

A close source revealed that she rejected the proposal because she can’t afford to share him with other women.

“Laide is a constant face in Ile Ife and there is no one in the palace who doesn’t know ‘Oloori Laide’. Yes, they call her Oloori in the palace and everyone thought Baba (Ooni) would marry her because he really loves her and she doesn’t joke with their affair,” a palace source exclusively revealed to Kemi Ashefon.

“But she refused. She didn’t want the mass wedding for two months to take place between September and October 2022. Not because she didn’t love him (she still does) but because she doesn’t want to share the love of her life with so many women.

Though it wasn’t Ooni’s intention to be polygamous, he couldn’t help it. He was instructed by the gods to marry many wives after Naomi left in December 2021 and he had to adhere to the instruction from the establishment.

“It’s really surprising that she would reject this proposal because they were very close and she was always with him. So many things are involved in this matter and it’s between LLB and the Ooni. They are still in love with each other anyways,” sources close to the couple said.

Born of a mother who is a lawyer, Laide is quite influential and connected to the corridors of power,

A single mum of one (the child isn’t Ooni’s), she was once married but walked out of the marriage due to domestic violence.

Ifeanyi: Police confirm cause of Davido son’s death

by Folarin Kehinde November 5, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Lagos State Police Command has revealed result of the autopsy conducted on the corpse of Ifeanyi Adeleke, son of Davido and his fiancée, Chioma Rowland and confirmed he died as a result of drowning.

The State Police PRO, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the development.

Punch had reported there were indications that the police might conduct an autopsy to determine whether Ifeanyi died as a result of drowning in a swimming pool at his father’s residence in the Banana Island area of Lagos State.

An impeccable source, who confirmed the development, said it was standard practice for the police to conduct an autopsy in such a case, adding, however, that the police would desist from the move if the deceased family members were against it.

“Though the family members are not saying anything yet because they are still in shock but until anybody says stop, the standard procedure is to conduct an autopsy and we are going to follow that procedure just like in any case of death,” the source said.

Explaining further, the source said out of the eight domestic workers interrogated by the police in connection with Ifeanyi’s death, the cook and nanny, whose job was to cater for the wellbeing of the three-year-old boy, had been detained for reasons including the failure to uphold the duty of care of the minor.

As of the time of filing this report, the nanny and cook were said to still be in detention.

Redesigning Naira: 20 Years of Waiting, Overdue

by Folarin Kehinde November 2, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Mixed reactions have continue to trailed recent decision of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to redesign the 200, 500 and 1,000 Naira notes as well as the sentiment expressed by the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed on the matter, a great number of analysts believe that the initiative would be positive for the economy.

However, President Muhammadu Buhari explained that the decision of the CBN to redesign the banknotes had his support, saying he was convinced that the nation would gain a lot by doing so.

According to the president, reasons given to him by the CBN convinced him that the economy stood to benefit from reduction in inflation, currency counterfeiting and the excess cash in circulation.

The CBN had also urged Nigerians to support the currency redesign project which it stressed is in the overall interest and that of the economy at large.

Part of the functions of the central bank is currency issuance and distribution within the country.

Central banks are required to redesign, produce and circulate new local legal tender every five to eight years, but the naira has not been redesigned in the last 20 years.

On February 28, 2007, as part of economic reforms, N20 was issued for the first time in polymer substrate, while the N50, N10 and N5 banknotes; as well as N1 and 50 kobo coins were reissued in new designs, and the N2 coin was introduced.

According to the central bank, the development was also aimed at checking the increasing ease and risk of currency counterfeiting evidenced by several security reports, and the increased risk to financial stability as well as the worsening shortage of clean and fit currency, with the attendant negative perception of the central bank.

The central bank further insisted that it followed the law and due process to carry out the redesigning exercise, which is 12 years due.

CBN Director in charge of Corporate Communication, Mr. Osita Nwanisobi said the CBN management, in line with provisions of section 2(b), section 18(a), and section 19(a)(b) of the CBN Act 2007, duly sought and obtained the approval of President Muhammadu Buhari in writing to redesign, produce, release and circulate new series of N200, N500, and N1,000 banknotes.

Meanwhile, Osita Nwanisobi pointed out that currency management in the country had faced several escalating challenges which threatened the integrity of the naira, the CBN, and the country in general, adding that every top-rate central bank was committed to safeguarding the integrity of the local legal tender, the efficiency of its supply, as well as its efficacy in the conduct of monetary policy.

On the timing of the redesign project, Nwanisobi explained that the CBN had even tarried for too long considering that it had to wait 20 years to carry out a redesign, whereas the standard practice globally was for central banks to redesign, produce and circulate new local legal tender every five to eight years.

While assuring Nigerians that the currency redesign exercise was purely a central banking exercise and not targeted at any group, the CBN spokesman expressed optimism that the effort will, among other goals, deepen Nigeria’s push to entrench a cashless economy in the face of increased minting of the eNaira.

CBN Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele explained that there was significant hoarding of naira notes by members of the public, with statistics showing that over 80 per cent of the currency in circulation were outside the vaults of the commercial banks.

He said as of September 2022, a total of N3.2 trillion was in circulation, of which N2.73 trillion was outside the vaults of the banks, describing the development as unacceptable.

Emefiele also urged bank customers to begin paying into their bank accounts the existing currency notes to enable them to withdraw the new banknotes once circulation begins mid-December 2022. He said all banks were expected to keep open their currency processing centres from Monday to Saturday so as to accommodate all cash that would be returned by their customers.

Ifeanyi: Tinubu, Wife Mourn with Davido

by Folarin Kehinde November 2, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has commiserated with Davido and Chioma over the loss of their son, Ifeanyi.

Tinubu’s condolence message was conveyed in a statement via his verified Twitter handle on Tuesday.

Similarly, the wife of Tinubu, Senator Oluremi expressed her condolences to the late Ifeanyi’s parents.

The APC presidential candidate and his wife asked God to grant Davido and Chioma the fortitude and strength to bear their loss.

Tinubu’s tweet reads, “Oluremi and I send our heartfelt and deepest condolences to David, Chioma, and the entire Adeleke family over the tragic loss of their son, Ifeanyi. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family. May the Lord grant them the fortitude and strength to deal with this painful tragedy.”

Recall that Ifeanyi drowned in the family’s swimming pool on Monday night in their home on Banana Island in Lagos, while his parents were on a trip to Ibadan for a family function.

The Lagos Police Command, while confirming the death of Ifeanyi, revealed that all members of Davido’s domestic staff are in their custody.

Revealed: What Ifa Priestess said about Davido’s Son Death

by Folarin Kehinde November 2, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Ifafunke Oketoyinbo Iyaosun, an Ifa priestess and Olokun goddess, has revealed some reasons responsible for the death of Ifeanyi, son of Nigerian musician, David Adeleke, aka Davido.

The Ifa priestess said the deceased might be a spiritual child who is against a loud celebration.

In an online viral video, she said Davido and Chioma should have carried out a spiritual enquiry before celebrating Ifeanyi’s third birthday. She also noted that certain careless words from Chioma when she separated from Davido could have been responsible for Ifeanyi’s death.

The Ifa priestess also said Ifeanyi might have a connection to Davido’s fame.

According to the Ifa priestess: “My condolence goes to Davido and Chioma; what happened isn’t what any parent would ever pray for. When this happened, I decided to find out what could be responsible. First, Ifeanyi just celebrated his third birthday, and this is where we come to play. This is why people should embark on terrestrial inquiry before celebrating children; embark on spiritual findings before celebrating a child; you don’t know if the child is from the mermaid world and doesn’t want a loud celebration. This is because this child had picked his day, which is after his third birthday. You can see that he died through water a few days after his third birthday.”

Continuing, she said: “Secondly, women should be careful of what they say; it could be that Chioma vowed that she would not reap from Ifeanyi if she returned to Davido when they separated. And when they reunited, this problem came. Thirdly, Davido is about to clock 30, and we don’t know what spiritual vow he made to attain fame. He may have vowed to renew his life with his first son because he is a glorious child and may also be a mermaid child.”
