We Are A Sad Generation with Happy Pictures” – Tonto Dike Laments

by Folarin Kehinde December 3, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Nollywood actress Tonto Dikeh has said what she thinks of this present generation.

For the single mother of one, this generation is only living a fake lifestyle away from their real selves.

“We are a sad generation with happy photos,” Tonto Dikeh wrote on her verified Instagram page.

Her posts triggered several reactions from colleagues and fans.

Funke Akindele wrote: Hmmmm

Ogbonna Cecelia wrote: I don’t even have happy pictures. I am just there.

Creamyenys wrote: Minus me and my household. Because we are content and happy with ourselves.

Recall that in a recent interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, Tonto Dikeh said that her original plan in life was to go into the gospel ministry.

Although she has taken up other professions, she says the door is not closed, as she may still answer the call.

“I’m an opportunist with this thing called acting or entertainment. But God has ordained that step already. I was swimming in a swimming pool.

“I was a church girl, going to be a pastor. I was supposed to be a pastor. I still might. It depends on where God is taking me to.”

In 2017, shortly after her divorce from businessman Churchill Olakunle, the actress announced that she was now born again, declaring herself ‘Radical for Jesus’.

Ms Dikeh, who has been absent from the movie industry, then explained what being born again meant.

Highlighting what it means to be born again five years ago, she said it is about living a fun-filled, happy and joyous life knowing that the almighty God is on one’s side.

She wrote, “Being born again isn’t about not having friends or hanging out, it’s about having the right friends that will elevate, motivate, inspire you and most especially pray with you…

“My fellow brethren, it is time for us to Allow the world to see Jesus in us colourfully. My name is Tonto Dikeh. I am a Radical for Jesus. My life is as bright as a coat of many colours. I speak in heavenly tongue, and I am an entertainer.”

Since then, she has preached the gospel amidst criticism on her Instagram page.

2 Billion Litres of PMS Available NNPC argue despite long queues

by Folarin Kehinde December 1, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Despite long queues at filling stations in Lagos, Abuja and other parts of the country, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has said it has two billion litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) in stock.

The company disclosed this on Thursday, December 1, in a statement issued by the Executive Vice President, Downstream, Adeyemi Adetunji.

Adetunji said the two billion litres will be sufficient for more than 30 days.

He further disclosed that the NNPCL has programmed vessels and trucks to unconstrained depots, adding that the company is closely monitoring massive load-outs from depots to states.

The statement stressed that the queues has nothing to do with scarcity of PMS.

“The recent queues in Lagos are largely due to ongoing road infrastructure projects around Apapa and access road challenges in Lagos.

“The gridlock is easing out and NNPC Ltd has programmed vessels and trucks to unconstrained depots and massive load-outs from depots to states are closely monitored,” he said.

Adetunji added that NNPCL retail and key marketers will restore normalcy in Abuja by loading more fuel into the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

He explained that fuel scarcity in the FCT and environs was impacted by the challenges recorded in Lagos.

“We want to reassure Nigerians that NNPCL has sufficient products and we significantly increased product loading in selected depots and extended hours at strategic stations to ensure sufficiency nationwide.

“We are also working with industry stakeholders to ensure normalcy is returned as soon as possible,” the statement added for more than 30 days.

87% of Nigeria Rural Roads Are Bad – World Bank

by Folarin Kehinde November 29, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Country Director, World Bank Shubham Chaudhuri has disclosed that 87% of Nigeria Rural roads are currently in bad conditions.

Chaudhuri while speaking in Abuja on Tuesday at the Presidential Launch of the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project in Nigeria (RAAM) stated that even with current scale up, Nigeria is not near to what it need to achieve a functional rural road.

“Even with the current scale up, we are not going to near what Nigeria needs to achieve, we have about 200,000 kilometers rural roads all over Nigeria of which 87% are in bad condition that means 40,000kilometers are usable, so if you think about tackling that problem at scale that brings it to the issue of physical affordability”.

Meanwhile, Chaudhuri also stated that there should be institutional sustainable structure to ensure that roads are maintained to avert repetition, hence, government should pay attention to maintainance of these roads.

“We have said that before we disburse the funds for RAAMP we have asked states to institutional structures to have maintenance agencies to clarify how this will be sustained”.

He added that the Nigerian government should be visionary national program in the scale surrounding rural roads connectivity which is physically affordable when government at all levels contribute to development of rural roads.

“Our financing is a little bit of the contribution, when federal government comes in with there federal budget and States through IGR this is a priority to so that the scale of financing will be achieved that’s what Nigeria needs moving forward”.

“For this to be physically affordable some choices has to be made, for this to be affordable the federal, and State should contribute to rural roads.

Arguing on the need for subsidies on PMS, Chaudhuri said, “One of the biggest choices Nigeria need to make Nigeria is weather Nigeria can continue to put #5 trillion to its PMS subsidies every year , #6 trillion probably next year think about what could be done with #6trillion both at the federal, state and local government level”.

Country Director, AFD, Xavier Muron on his part stated that RAAM project of £200 million will address access road and electrification issues, help post harvest management through refrigeration and processing.

Muron added that the project would mitigate post harvest loss which is an issue in rural communities making Nigeria to import more food products to support food security issues and that’s why we have to see the implementation of the RAAMP project to ensure that we have a means to address post harvest losses and ensure food security.

Speak Out, NOPRIN Charges Victims of Police Brutality, Abuse in Nigeria

by Folarin Kehinde November 29, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Kenny Folarin, Abuja

The National Coordinator, Network of Police Reform in Nigeria (NOPRIN), Foundation, Emmanuel Ikule has implored victims of police brutality or abuse in any form to speak out in order to get justice.

Ikule while speaking in Abuja on Monday at the Public Tribunal on Police Abuses in Nigeria, North Central Zone stated that over time, lots of persons have doubted the justice system but NOPRIN with a network of 67 non-governmental organization is trying to make amends to make sure that victims of police brutality get justice hence they must speak out.

“So the essence of this is to lend voice to the voiceless that if they speak out, something can be done about it. But you need to come out for people to stand for you and we are hoping that just like the other zones we were able to get results and we hope to get results here too”.

“This cases can only be possible when you push because a lot of persons do not even believe that justice still exist in the country, so this is to make people know that even the police themselves can be disciplined but you need to report your case before somebody will speak for you”.

He explained that the tribunal aims at encouraging victims of survival of these abuses to come and for NOPRIN to aid them have access to justice, whilst pushing government oversight agencies to fulfill their mandates.

“If the Nigeria Constitution, Section 33-40, talks about the right of citizen, we have anti-torture act of 2017 that criminalizes all form of torture against human being in all forms, we still have violence against person prohibition act that prohibit all forms of violence against persons, then why is there still abuse?”.

Honorable Commissioner, Human Right, Police Service Commission (PSC)Rommy Mom affirm that police brutality is real and a global phenomenon hence an urgent need to start making gradual progress in terms of reducing this, police brutality or unprofessionalism in police conduct.

Meanwhile, Mom stated once there is no modus to address police brutality or once the modus is ineffective, then the country is in problem and but hope that Nigeria with the PSC in place and CSO like NOPRIN have eagle eye in terms of picking on these violations and bringing them forward but most importantly reversing the situation of unprofessionalism in the police conduct.

Continuing, Rommy said” undauntedly the welfare of the police can be better, it is not what it should be it is what we are all hoping to improve upon radically because this are persons that work long hours sacrifice their lives cc couple with meagre salaries unfitting accomodations”.

He added that the government has in the last years tried to improve their salaries but the implementation of those salaries is very critical issuance for police lives and general welfare.

He opined that the police can have a better deal from the country which they serve but the underlining reason for the police to serve their country is patriotism hence negate reasons for extortion and bribery.

“Patriotism should trump all those issues while we see that we appreciate them the way they should be appreciated, but as it is now, it can be better”.

Executive Director, Dorothy Njemanze Foundation Dorothy Njemanze on her part identified lack of access to justice, forced settlement at police outpost and refusal to incident report that are made in line with sexual and gender based violence have been major challenges faced by the foundation.

Njemanze however expressed optimism for working systems that encourages victims to speak out as exemplified by NOPRIN.

Meanwhile, Njemanze noted that States that have not adopted the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) (VAPP) act are colossal failure to women and girls because they are cheating them.

“It is Violence Against Persons (Prohibition), majority of the things they it covers are issues that affect women, so since 2015 till now, that is more than enough time to domesticate the law.

“If you have not done it you have failed the people, and thankfully, the elections are around the corners and I hope the people you failed will use their PVC to kick you out of office”. She added.

FG Hint on how Artisanal Miners Can Apply For N100 Million Loan

by Folarin Kehinde November 28, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Nigerian government has revealed that artisanal miners can access N100 million loans at low-interest rates to boost the diversification of Nigeria’s mining industry.

This was disclosed in an interview by Nigeria’s minister of mines and steel development, Mr. Olamilekun Adegbite, on Sunday in Abuja at the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Forum.

He added that the first step towards accessing the loans is for artisanal miners to form cooperatives.

Adegbite noted that artisanal miners can expand their operations by registering with cooperative societies, which will enable them to access as much as N100 million loan at only five percent interest rate.

The minister added that the loan repayment could span a period of 20 years, which is fixed at a low rate for artisanal miners to encourage diversification of the economy.

10 miners form cooperatives of 10 people when approaching the ministry for the loan  to make the process seamless, adding that doing so makes them a priority for the ministry, which enables them with the appropriate equipment and license.

“I was told we have more than a thousand cooperatives that have registered with us. Some of them have successfully transited from artisanal miners to small-scale miners.

“There are still many of them out there but we are winning because we are winning them over with incentives. So, because they are working, they are paying revenue to the government by paying their royalty, so it is a win-win situation,” he said.

The minister revealed that mining funds totaling N3.2 billion have been domiciled with the Bank of Industry (BoI) to boost mining exploration in Nigeria.

The FG stated last month that it has placed Lithium (the key component for making batteries in electric vehicles), as one of its priority minerals for exports, and expanding Nigeria’s mining sector.

They added that the ministry will prioritize six minerals, including Coal, Bitumen, Limestone, Iron Ore, Barites, Gold, Lead/Zinc Ore, and Lithium.

CBN: Again, Lawyer Stirs Controversy Over Arabic Inscription On Redesigned Naira Notes

by Folarin Kehinde November 24, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Public interest lawyer, Chief Malcolm Emokiniovo Omirhobo, on Thursday, decried the Arabic inscription on the redesigned 200, 500, and 1000 naira notes by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, alleging that it is inimical to the unity of Nigeria.

Expressing his views in a statement, he argued that Arabic is not one of Nigeria’s four official languages, namely English, Yoruba, Hausa, and Igbo, and therefore not indigenous to the country.

“It is about time we realize as Nigerians that no religion is superior to the other, no ethnic nationality is superior to the other and no language is superior to the other and that we are all equal before the constitution and our creator,” he maintained in the statement.

Recall that the lawyer has been at the forefront of calling for the removal of the Arabic inscription since 2020.

In his suit reportedly filed before the Federal High Court in Lagos at the time, the CBN through its lawyer, Abiola Lawal countered his application saying, “The inscriptions on the country’s currencies do not and at no time have they threatened the secular statehood of the nation or have they violated the constitution of Nigeria, as every design and inscription was finalized with the approval of the relevant government bodies.

“The naira notes retained the inscriptions with Ajami since 1973 when the name of the Nigerian currency was changed to naira from pounds.

“Ajami was inscribed on the country’s currency by the colonialists to aid those without Western education in certain parts of the country, who, back then, constituted a larger part of the populace.

“Ajami is not a symbol or mark of Islam but an inscription to aid the populace uneducated in Western education in ease of trade.”

Our correspondent gathered that as of the time of this report, the suit filed by Omirhobo against the Arab inscription is still ongoing and has not been disposed of yet.

Meanwhile, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) in a press release on November 1 urged the CBN to retain the Arabic inscription on the redesigned naira notes.

“Unknown to many, Arabic is not a foreign language in Nigeria because it is actually spoken as the local language by a significant proportion of the population in North Eastern Nigeria called Shuwa Arabs. The removal of Arabic from the naira has cut off this section of our population from economic activities. This action constitutes a gross violation of Allah-given fundamental human rights of the Shuwa people as well as that of millions of Nigerian Muslims.

“MURIC is not unaware of the assurance given yesterday, Monday, 31st October 2022 by the former governor of the CBN, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, to the effect that the current CBN governor had assured him that Arabic would not be removed from the new naira notes which are being expected next month,” MURIC wrote.

On Wednesday, President, Muhammadu Buhari unveiled the redesigned N200, N500, and N1,000 naira notes retaining the features on the previous notes while changing the color of the new notes.

The CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, said the old currency has been in use for 19 years, and there was the need to control circulation following “spiraling challenges on the economy, especially on security and counterfeiting.”

‘Pure Water’ Producers Increase Price to N300 Per Bag

by Folarin Kehinde November 24, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Association of Table Water Producers (ATWAP) has raised the price of sachet (‘pure’) water to N300 per bag.

National President, Clementina Ativie made the announcement in a statement on Wednesday.

The decision was unanimously reached during the ATWAP national convention in Abuja.

Ativie explained that the increment was due to current prices of material and Nigeria’s economic situation.

“The price of sachet water popularly known as pure water is now N300 per bag as the company price.

“There will be no extra bag or extra pieces henceforth for wholesale or retail buyers,” she said.

The President added that the cost of production had gone far beyond what they can bear.

She said the new rate would help them to keep up with bills and remain in business.

The statement appealed to citizens to be understanding and bear with the association.
