BREAKING:Lionel Messi Hands Argentina Third World Cup Win To Put ‘GOAT’ Debate To Rest

by Folarin Kehinde December 18, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

An exceptional performance from Lionel Messi handed Argentina their third world against defending champions France.

The thrilling World Cup final produced six goals – the highest ever – as the European side fought back every time they trailed Argentina forcing the match to go into penalties.

Mbappe’s brilliant perfomance counted for nothing at the end as the French side missed two kicks in the penalty shootout

Messi scored a brace and opened the penalty round with a beautiful strike to give his side a much-needed mental advantage.

Subsequently, Emiliano Martinez saved Kingsley Coman’s kick before Aurelien Touchameni played wide to hand Argentina the win on a platter of gold.

Messi had opened the scoring for Argentina with a low footed strike from the penalty spot in the 23rd minute, moments later Angel Di Maria doubled the lead after converting MacAllister’s pass.

However in the 2nd half, the defending champions found their footing as they score two quick goals via Kylian Mbappe.

The PSG forward initially scored a penalty after Nicolas Otamendi brought down Muani in the 18 yard box.

The match which produced a number of brilliant scoring opportunities on both sides went into extra time.

Argentina appeared to have sealed the victory in the 2nd half of extra time after Messi’s beautiful right footed strike went straight to the net. But Mbappe came to the rescue again with a penalty just two minutes to the end of the match forcing the match into penalties.

With the World Cup win, Lionel Messi’s rivalry with Portugal’s Christiano Ronaldo over the ‘greatest footballer of all time’ spot appears to be settled.

Messi has now won all possible titles in top flight football including several league titles, UEFA Champions league, Club World Cup, Copa America and the FIFA World Cup.

The Argentine striker also has seven balon d’or titles against Ronaldo’s five.

Yuletide: FRSC Cautious Against Reckless Driving on 2nd Niger Bridge, others

by Folarin Kehinde December 17, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Ahead of the Yuletide season, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has warned road users against reckless driving on routes such as the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and Second Niger Bridge.

The Deputy Corps Marshal, Operations, Kayode Fanola, gave the warning while speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Saturday, December 17.

According to him, over the years, the FRSC has discovered that the last quarter of the year is when many vehicles are on the road.

He noted that the good condition of the rehabilitated Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and the newly constructed Second Niger Bridge should not be an excuse for over-speeding.

“Don’t forget that this very period, apart from the festivities, is also the harvesting (season).

“We know that our people in the rural areas are farmers. This is the time that their agricultural products are coming out. So, a lot of vehicles that have been parked from January to September will come out because there is work for them. That is one major issue.

“You would agree with me that if a bus is carrying 14 passengers and they are all students, they have a lot of influence on the driver. They will tell the driver to play loud music, and they want him to speed. These are factors. We are conscious of this.

“This time around, we have put plans in place to ensure that we counter these problems that we’re aware of. For this year, what is unique about it is that major corridors have been rehabilitated to the extent that speed is going to be an issue for us, and we are prepared for that.

“For instance, the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway is like a Formula One track now; the road is virtually completed, and all barriers have been removed. The minister ordered that they should be removed, and the contractor has removed them, so the road is so free now.

“The traffic around Onitsha and Asaba is taking a different dimension now because the Second Niger Bridge has been opened. For the past two days now, people have been experiencing a smooth ride using the Second Niger Bridge, especially those that are going towards the eastern part of the country.

“We have put men and facilities in place to ensure that people are able to travel safely and they will be able to get to their destinations on time with less stress,” he said.

Fanola disclosed that there had been a high level of compliance with the enforcement of the speed-limiting devices first introduced in 2016 from passenger fleet operators and heavy-duty fleet operators, the primary targets of the safety policy.

Meanwhile, the FRSC has advised traders to desist from selling goods on highways to avoid unnecessary loss of lives, especially during the Yuletide.

The Acting Corps Marshal, FRSC, Dauda Biu, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

Biu said that the advice was essential to prevent vehicles from running into those selling goods on the roads.

He expressed concern over the number of casualties recorded from crashes that involved roadside traders.

The Acting Corps Marshall noted that such sellers, apart from obstructing traffic flow, exposed their lives to danger on the roads leading to loss of lives and properties.

He added that such crashes could be avoided if the traders were cautious and desisted from trading along the road.

NPL Urges FG to Declare December 12 National Leadership Day

by Folarin Kehinde December 16, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

As Nigeria grapples with leadership challenges across various sectors, Nigerian Prize for Leadership (NPL) has called on Federal Government to declare December 12 every year a national leadership day, beginning from 2023.

NPL while reaffirming its belief that the task of nation-building is a joint effort of both government and citizens, said it will continue to lead the way in supporting government to appropriately address the challenge of leadership deficit in the country.

“Since 2020 we have set aside the 12th of December each year to call attention to the importance of effective leadership in building our nation”, the chairman NPL Governing Board, Prof. Anya O. Anya said at the investiture of former Executive Secretary of TETFund, Prof. Suleiman Elias Bogoro as the winner 2021 Nigeria Prize For Leadership recently in Abuja.

“This is the third edition of this initiative and we can confirm that the value has been significant. We will explore way forward on how we will amplify this modest effort into a national movement that will with time redefine Nigeria as a symbol of right values, honesty and integrity, a truly pan-Nigerian initiative” Prof. Anya further stated.

He pledged the readiness of NPL to provide adequate content to effectively mark the day in a most rewarding way for all citizens, government and the nation.

Prof. Anya while underlining that getting it right in leadership has become a matter of urgent action expressed belief that setting a day aside for this purpose will demonstrate government’s disposition to redefine the character of leadership in the country, as well as enable citizens and organizations to give it exceptional attention.

Backing this call, the Executive Secretary, Nigerian Prize for Leadership, Dr. Ike Neliaku said the organization’s experience in the past three years indicates that Nigerians desire exceptional leadership, which he said NPL is working tirelessly towards providing quality input.

“We believe that as we continue to do this, to mark this day, it is something that will raise leadership consciousness in the minds of Nigerians. It is a very important call, a day we will look at issues of leadership, identify models of leadership, those who have done well, we celebrate them.

“NPL is willing to partner with the federal government to develop the content for this day, qualitative content that will answer its name in all ramifications”, he stated.

Prof. Bogoro in his response expressed gratitude to the NPL selection panel as well as the Governing Board for finding him fit for the N25m prize award, saying the transparency and confidentiality deployed in screening nominees for the Prize, which later produced him as winner should serve as a guide to other institutions. He expressed gladness that his modest efforts in setting the leadership pace with the privileged positions he had occupied are being recognized and appreciated.

Prof. Bogoro attributed failure of leadership to local authorities, states, region and entire country to selfishness and desperate quest for personal profits.

“Most leaders who failed the country and the people are those who pre-occupy themselves with personal interests and in the process, they are not bothered about the moral obligations of rendering service and emphasizing on personal privileges at the expense of the people you are called to lead, or indeed serve.

“This is because many of us don’t bother to know that the best stewardship is servant leadership”, he said.

Chairman of the prize presentation and the Vice Chairman, Governing Board of NPL, Prof. Jerry Gana said the selection and screening panel made up of eminent Nigerians independently assembled from various parts of the country set a standard with which all nominees were screened and Prof. Bogoro emerged winner.

He said the selection panel led by Engr. Mansur Ahmad, a forner Group Executive Director of NNPC and immediate past president of Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, was very independent without any interference from the Governing Board.

Senate Threatens to Arrest Finance Ministry Perm Sec over missing JAMB’s N113m

by Folarin Kehinde December 14, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Senate has threatened the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning with a warrant of arrest if the Director, Cash Departments fails to appear to provide sensitive documents related to disbursement of Service Wide Votes and missing N113 million on salary adjustment for Joint Admission Board Matriculation (JAMB).

Speaking on Tuesday in Abuja, Chairman, Senate Committee on Public Accounts, Senator Matthew Urhoghide (PDP, Edo South), stated that the threat became imperative over the absence of the Director who has ignored three invites.

Urhoghide said the Committee had written a letter of appearance to the Ministry on 20th of October, 2022 and the letter was received on 21 October, 2022 by the Ministry.

The ministry was also to give details of release to all the Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs, including Police and Armed Forces.

According to him, another letter was written to the Ministry on December 8, 2022, on the issue concerning missing N113 million of salary augmentation for JAMB.

Meanwhile, the office of Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF) told the Committee that the N113 million was released to JAMB in May 2017 for salary augmentation.

The representative of JAMB, Director of Finance and Administration, Mufutau Bello, told the Committee that the N113 million was not released to them, just as he argued that if the money was released, it would have cut across the whole year.

According to him, it would cut across all MDAs using CONLESS. If there is a shortfall in May, it will spread to the whole year.

Not happy with the development and frequent shunning of the Committee by the Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Finance and the Director, Cash Management of the Ministry, Senator Urhoghide then gave the Permanent Secretary 48 hours to appear and provide the relevant documents to the Committee or face warrant of arrest by next week.

by Folarin Kehinde December 14, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Passengers of the Abuja- Kaduna Train station on Monday were left stranded as a result of the in activeness of the National Identification Management Commission server.

Recall that the train services resumed operations on December 5, 2022, after eights months of suspension on the rail lines as a result of the terrorist attack on the tracks.

According to media reports (not in PUNCH) train passengers scheduled for 9:45 am trips could not board the train as a result of the breakdown of the server.

The report further stated that passengers were left with no other choice than to travel to Kaduna by road.

When contacted the Station Superintendent Idu, Peter Osazuwa said, “We have small network issues concerning NIN not our own server. It was later rectified and we used it for the other train that left by three o’clock today.”

Responding to a question on what happened to the passengers he said, “The instruction is from the Minister of Transportation, Mu’azu Sambo and our Managing Director, Fidet Ohkiri that if you do not have NIN you can not board the train, so when there is no NIN there is no way they can board the train.”

CBM Global Lament Discrimination Against Deaf Women and Girls to Access Healthcare Services

by Folarin Kehinde December 13, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Country Director, CBM Global Disability Inclusion, Ms. Ekaete Umoh has expressed dissatisfaction over discrimination and lack of access to information by deaf women and girls to access basic healthcare services in Nigeria.

Umoh while speaking in Abuja on Monday at the launch of the World Federation of the Deaf Research Report on barriers to healthcare access to deaf Nigerian women and girls during emergencies stated that despite Nigeria ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD)
deaf women and girls are still largely discriminated in terms of access to information before and during emergencies.

“Despite the Nigeria ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) on 24 September 2010, the Sendai Framework and their extant legal protocols which recognizes full and equal access and participation in societies and communities for persons with disabilities as a fundamental right, including in times of crisis, deaf women and girls are still largely discriminated in terms of access to information before and during emergencies”.

Umoh explained that the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) seeks to address the intersection of being deaf and being a woman when facing emergency and disaster situations and requesting healthcare services, hence the report presents preliminary research on the experiences faced in health care by deaf women and girls in Nigeria, highlighting the most recent emergency and disaster situation, the Covid-19 pandemic

Corroborating, President, World Federation of the Deaf (WFD), Joseph Murray stated that Deaf women and girls in Nigeria are at higher risk of inadequate healthcare services and treatment due to stigma associated with deaf people and vulnerability caused by gender bias, their socio-economic situation and absence of opportunities to seek help in their national sign language.

Murray however recommended that there should be deaf awareness training in the hospitals to build language acceptance environments, also, deaf experts should be hired in hospitals, healthcare facilities, government health departments to advise and support deaf-inclusive public policies and programs.

He added that there should be Investment in deaf education, focusing on intersectionality issues that can reduce the long – term financial burden off the government with collaboration international organizations to develop further research to dig deeper into the issues of intersectionality among women and girls.

Executive Director, CBM Global, David Bainbridge, stated that CBM Global will provide funding to WFD for 2023 to pursue a number of great priority and joint projects whilst focusing on replicating Nigeria based research with deaf community members, also access how accessible and safe hospitals are for deaf visitors using the accessibility goal guide as a tool.

Executive Director, Ability Plus, Janet Fasakin on her part charged the government federal government through federal ministry of health and other agencies to take up sign language provision for health as a priority for deaf women and girls, hence issues confronting them would be addressed and solved.

2023 Elections: AAC, PRP Form Alliance

by Folarin Kehinde December 12, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

As the 2023 Elections draws nearer, the African Action Congress (AAC) and the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) on Monday officially formed an alliance to contest the coming elections.

Presidential Aspirant, African Action Alliance (AAC) Omoyele Sowore while speaking at a press briefing in Abuja stated that the two parties are the oldest and youngest revolutionary party and are forming an alliance to overthrow the evil oppression in Nigeria today.

Sowore explained that the press briefing aims at providing answers to questions by Nigerians on the need to form a major radical revolutionary party in Nigeria today.

“We are in alliance with the original PRP today, the PRP doesn’t have a faction, the other PRP is the overflow of the APC and PDP, there’s no faction in AAC and we are back in control of the party”.

“This is a new revolutionary party for Nigeria and Nigerians and we intend to shutdown corruption and reduce the system of deceit that has engulf the nation since independence”.

Furthermore, Sowore said that the other political parties are not different, hence the PDP is not different from APC and vice versa.

“In this coming elections, you hear of 4 major parties such as the PDP, APC, LP and NNPP all the characters and personnels in this party are from PDP originally, Labour Party own is worse because they are orphanage home for internally displaced politicians, anytime they are rejected from PDP or APC they go to labour party”.

He added that the alliance is a new revolutionary party for Nigeria and Nigerians and they intend to shutdown corruption and reduce the system of deceit that has engulf the nation since independence.

“The ultimate goal is total liberation of Nigerians and oppressed Nigerians in diaspora, we need to unite to tack out old parties”.

Corroborating, the Supposed National Chairman, People’s Redemption Party Abdulmajid Dawudu, stated that the is going to be a positive turnaround for the country where two parties with common goals are coming together to form Alliance that will represent the interest of Nigerians.

“The two political parties are merging today, this is just the beginning of the alliance and we are starting this now officially, this will be a great hope for Nigerians”.

He however stated to that the issue of who the real presidential aspirant for the people’s redemption party is still in court and would be sorted soon.

“On Kola Abiola being Presidential Candidate for the PRP, we are in court, we refuse to be moved by anyone to change the ideologies of the party, Kola being the presidential candidate is not true”.

Political loyalists: Let Tinubu be himself

by Folarin Kehinde December 12, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

By Tonnie Iredia

Each time I come across a statement by the different support groups and campaign managers of some political parties, I am immediately reminded of certain issues that are yet to change in politics and elections in Nigeria. One of them is the ease with which the closest sect of loyalists to Nigerian leaders complicate their tenures. It has become the practice for candidates who had during electioneering campaigns rolled out numerous programmes and policies to renege on or deemphasize them once they assume office. Each of them is always able to do so even without blinking because of the covert influence of ‘cabals’- a recent more popular nomenclature for powerful loyalists who position themselves to call the shots from the corridors of power. Painfully, most of the shots which clearly portray absolute power hardly help the respective principals to sustain the built-up hopes and expectations of the electorate. It is certainly unwise for leaders to allow their followers to drive their dreams or to in any way suggest that they are incapable of making independent decisions.

During the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan such political loyalists were quite active dissuading the then president from decisions he would ordinarily have made; a good example being the cancellation of his planned visit to comfort the Chibok community where hundreds of young female students had been abducted. Indeed, every opportunity was seized at that period of insecurity to use ‘security advice’ to rationalize every action or omission by government. At a point, the nation’s independence anniversary celebrations were moved from the Eagle Square into the Villa. Could it be true that our military were incapable at the time of securing the Square? No one appeared to have fully appreciated the propensity of such decisions underscoring the invincibility of the insurgents and inflicting more fear on the public. When therefore the then opposition party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) promised to change the precarious situation, not many found cause to doubt the party’s campaign team but it didn’t take long for the APC to fully inherit the same trait we had all thought belonged to only the PDP.

Those who have keenly followed the activities of the Buhari administration would readily agree that the president is always patient with his appointees allowing each one, ample opportunity to exercise his or her discretion while implementing their assignments. Despite several public outbursts, he gave the immediate past service chiefs more than enough room to make it. But vice president Osinbajo has not been that lucky. After the opportunity he had during Buhari’s long medical leave to the UK, there was no more. Those who imagine that it was close loyalists of the president that worked against Osinbajo have a point because how he has been handled is not consistent with Buhari’s liberal posture of delegating duties to subordinates. Those who argue that Buhari did not need to handover during trips not exceeding 21 days are probably enjoying the cabal status because everywhere, the standard practice is for a president to handover if he or she would be away for even one day. The 21-day limit in our Constitution is when his refusal to handover is to be formally challenged by the legislature.

Supporters of our current leading candidates for the 2023 elections are already showing signs that they are anxious to set up the dreaded cabal team if their principals are elected. Nowhere else is this more obvious than the ruling APC where handlers of Candidate Bola Ahmed Tinubu are not allowing the man to be himself. Presidential debates, the world over constitute the highest and most exciting form of political broadcasts. Understandably, that is the form which creates room for diametrically opposed viewpoints to be canvassed by candidates in one forum for meaningful comparison by voters for informed decision making. Although some of our candidates in the past, always out of fear, shunned presidential debates, Nigeria cannot continue to replace debates with boring party talks in which everyone makes claims that are not interrogated by others. That format is certainly unexciting, though it can coexist with other forms.

The decision of the APC candidate to shun political broadcasts organized by Arise TV is unfortunate. To start with, Arise TV is today closest in proactive performance to John Momoh’s leading Channels TV, making it obvious that it can easily attract viewers. Besides, the station is just one of the organizers of the programmes which include many other credible organs. As a result, having a misgiving with just one of the organizers is insufficient to deprive Tinubu from using such a popular platform to attract votes through a good debate. The controversy as to whether or not Section 22 of our Constitution compels the candidate to appear in a debate should not be used to hold-on to the letter rather than the spirit of the law. This is because if any candidate is free to ignore any medium, such a candidate would be deliberately stopping the particular medium from performing a constitutional mandate. This is why Tinubu should attend every debate especially where his competitors are present. To be the only absentee among the select few is open to several interpretations by different people.

More importantly, the impression being created that Tinubu cannot stand a debate is not only untrue, it is a seed sown and frequently watered by some of his followers who are probably nursing the secret ambition of serving as cabals. The performance of Tinubu at Chatham House last week shows clearly that he is quite fit to speak to any audience. He even danced with vigour to Kizz Daniel’s ‘Buga’ after the Chatham House outing. Indeed, the question that was best answered at the Chatham forum was the one on his real identity and credentials which he personally answered. His decision to ask one of his followers to answer the question on foreign policy for example was unnecessary having himself in his opening remarks clearly stated the expedience of predicating foreign policy on domestic policy. In other words, his decision to delegate some followers to answer some cheaper questions only showed that he was anxious to formally compliment some of his powerful followers. In fact, the argument that the candidate wanted to show that he is a man who is good at delegating powers is exceedingly weak because before he is elected as president, he has no presidential powers to delegate. This does not derogate from the fact that he has a powerful team of former and present governors etc.

Perhaps it is necessary at this point to draw the attention of the APC to the ‘Uses and Gratification Theory’ in Mass Communication which has since established that people deliberately seek out the particular medium which satisfies their specific needs. Therefore, it is viewers and listeners in the case of broadcasting that ultimately make a choice of which medium to tune to and which of its programmes to get exposed to. For this reason, APC ought to pursue her public enlightenment and voter education schemes by utilizing every opportunity to reach the different segments of the society. It is self-hurting to unwittingly ignore any medium because that would automatically shut out voters who prefer to patronize the particular medium that was so treated.

Undoubtedly, other competitors who do not engage in such discriminating practice would at the end of the day gain more media leverage and greater public attention. The point to be made is that the period of political broadcasts is not a time for fighting media enemies, real or perceived. Rather, it is a time for aggregating all available chances for selling a candidate. The personal appeal by Tinubu on Channels TV for undecided Nigerians to quickly make up their minds and vote for him as the most credible candidate according to him is stronger than several press releases; it would be strongest if made in a debate. As previously articulated by this column, other candidates particularly Peter Obi who has always spoken, should never shun opportunities to further elucidate on their campaign promises and manifestos.
