Benue Residents Switches to Burukutu over Increase in Price of Beer

by Folarin Kehinde April 14, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

There is currently a growing obsession for a local brew called Burukutu, or BKT for short, among young men and women in Makurdi and its environs at the moment. Before now, the consumption of the brew was associated with the poor and illiterate on the street. But all that has changed, and BKT is now generally favoured and found on the tables of the high, middle, and common men in Benue State. Drinking spots in the state now brandish the drink as a first choice for all, and nobody is ashamed of displaying or consuming it with pride. Indeed, the sorghum-based drink is now the toast of the town, especially at weekends when, in the conviviality of the morning, they share the drink, share thoughts, and share ideas.

Burukutu has become the choice of not a few, particularly among those who before now were addicted consumers of beer and alcoholic beer drinks. Some have even gone so far as to coin special names for the joints they patronise and go a step further to form social clubs at such Burukutu drinking joints. Suffice it to say that before now, the rate of consumption of beer and other alcoholic beverages in the state capital, particularly, was way high. It was a common sight to see people gathering in beer drinking spots at the close of work, to share their bottles of beer with friends. Though that drinking practice still exists, it is now obvious that the traffic to these beer drinking spots that you find in the streets of the town has drastically reduced, and much of the diversion is headed for BKT joints strategically located in parts of Makurdi town.

The development has also seen local brewers smiling to the banks given the unexpected patronage they now enjoy. Though some have attributed the high patronage of BKT joints to their affordability given the sharp rise in the cost of a bottle of beer and other alcoholic beverages, the love for BKT, which goes for as little as N700 for a four litre bucket, even among the elites who can easily afford beer, opens up different lines of argument as to the motivation for the rush and addiction to the local brew. A journalist, Dennis Achussa, one of the promoters of Burukutu drink, who said he has been drinking the local brew for about two decades, gave an insight into why the brew has gained prominence among the people.

Hear him, “Burukutu is one of two Tiv beverages. The other is “Iber.” The difference between the two is that while Burukutu is fermented, Iber is unfermented. Originally, it was a drink meant for elders and brewed at occasions such as market days, celebrations of rites like Ivom, Kwav, Amar, and any other feast that the Tiv would have. Soon, it gained prominence among age grades (Kwav). Brewed from either millet or sorghum, consumers of Burukutu believe that it is nutritious and contributes to a higher volume of blood in the body. Originally, the Tiv called it Tashi, meaning (there is still something to life). And it was considered offensive, to sit alone to drink Burukutu. That is why often, you find people drinking it in groups, sometimes sitting in a circular fashion.

“During Burukutu sit out, normally according to friends or age grade, moral values and how resources are shared are learned. It is time to learn from the acts of heroics of our forefathers as well as new developments in the land. It is a ground for socialisation as much as it is for learning the Tiv way of life. Those who should know say millet is a good source of protein, fiber, key vitamins, and minerals, and that its potential health benefits include protecting cardiovascular health, preventing the onset of diabetes, helping people achieve and maintain a healthy weight because BKT drinkers do not develop pot belly, and managing inflammation in the gut. Locals may not know this, but the one thing that they hold on to is that Burukutu gives ‘more blood.’

“It is nearly two decades now that I have been consuming the beverage. I cherish and enjoy it most when it comes with “fermented locust beans, onions, and green leaves” or “Nyata with Alie” or small fish in vegetables such as garden eggs. My choice days for the beverage are Saturdays and Sundays. We usually gather under the name “Mega Culture,” relax, learn new things, and/or share experiences before dispersing. It is important to note that many people are leaving beer for Burukutu because it saves resources. No matter how prices of products have gone up, Burukutu is still sold at N700 per four litre compared to a bottle of beer that goes for N400. And more so because it is more nutritious than beer. I prefer it to beer, as do many others.”

On his part, another consumer and promoter of the local brew, Mr. Emmanuel Gwaza, pointed out that “drinking BKT is a matter of choice, because personally, I was into taking beer but I stopped because I don’t like the content anyone. Now I take BKT, and the one I enjoy most is the one made of millet because it is highly nutritional. The contents are just millet and water, which are natural products. So it nourishes the body, and if you see my body, you will accept that this man is properly nourished because I take a large quantity of BKT, especially on Sundays after church. I take it on weekends. I do not take it on work days, considering my position as a civil servant. I ensure I drink responsibly.

“Aside from its nutritional value, it also creates a forum for you to interact socially with friends where issues of culture are discussed because it is a drink that is consumed by adults. And anytime we converge, we discuss very serious family and traditional issues, recalling past practices. BKT carries everybody along, there is that sign of communal living where a large quantity is bought by one person and it is drank by a whole lot more people. So you see that people who don’t even have come around to sip to their satisfaction. And to add to it, the price is friendly compared to beer and other alcoholic beverages.” I want to discount the belief that most people are into BKT consumption because of money, no. I can afford to buy beer or any kind of drink, but I opt for BKT because I know it is natural and healthy for all ages.”

Women Who Use Contraceptives Are At High Risk Of Breast Cancer — Study

by Folarin Kehinde April 11, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

Women who use contraceptives are at higher risk of having breast cancer, regardless of the kind of birth control pills used, a new study has revealed.

According to the study, progestin-only and progestin with estrogen contraceptives are associated with a slight increase in breast cancer risk.

The study published in the open-access journal PLOS Medicine noted that the risk of breast cancer was similar regardless of whether birth control was progestin and estrogen combined or progestin only.

The World Health Organisation, however, said approximately half of breast cancer develops in women with no identifiable risk factor other than being a female and over 40 years of age.

The global health organisation further explained that certain factors increase the risk of breast cancer.

The WHO listed the factors as increasing age, obesity, harmful use of alcohol, family history of breast cancer, history of radiation exposure, reproductive history, tobacco use, and postmenopausal hormone therapy.

However, the new study found that those prescribed oral combined contraceptives, injectable progestagens, and progestagen-releasing IUD contraceptives were at increased risk of breast cancer.

Scientists from the United Kingdom used the Clinical Practical Research Datalink for their study. They evaluated the medical records of 9,498 women under 50 with invasive breast cancer. All the women received their diagnosis between 1996 and 2017.

The researchers also looked at 18,171 medical records to use as a control group.

During the study, the researchers discovered that 44 per cent of women with breast cancer had hormonal birth control prescriptions, with about one-half for progestin-only.

They also found out that 39 per cent of the women in the control group had a prescription for hormonal birth control, while about one-half were for progestin-only.

Speaking on their findings, a medical oncologist and director of Breast Medical Oncology for the Margie Petersen Breast Center at Providence Saint John’s Health Center, Dr. Parvin Peddi told Healthline that women do not need to choose a progestin-only containing birth control medication because of the perceived lower risk of birth cancer.

She added, “We have known that oral contraceptives slightly increase the risk of breast cancer.

“This study aims to determine if progestin-only containing oral contraceptives has a lower risk or whether the delivery mode, for example, oral vs. injectable vs. intrauterine device, affects risk. The study found a similar increased risk of breast cancer among all the above options.

“The main take-home message is that this study finds that women do not need to choose a progestin-only containing birth control medication because of the perceived lower risk of birth cancer.”

“On the other hand, it’s important to note that the absolute increased risk of breast cancer from any of these medications is quite low, and this study should not dissuade women from using hormone-containing birth controls,” Peddi said. “The risk of breast cancer was seen in less than 0.5% of women aged 35-39 due to these medications and in even fewer women who used these medications at a younger age.”

An oncologist at Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, Dr. Tola Kusimo argued that while the study provided evidence regarding the short-term associations between hormonal contraceptives and breast cancer risk, it did not do so for longer-term associations or the effect of the total duration of contraceptive use.

Kusimo added, “I have also seen the study that you are talking about. But you need to understand that breast cancer risk can go up with both combined and progestogen-only hormonal contraception, however, the risk is minimal.

“The risk is lower in younger women, unlike when the person using the contraceptive is an older woman.

“The best ways to reduce cancer risk are to quit smoking, eat a healthy, balanced diet, drink less alcohol, and maintain a healthy weight. Contraception has a wide range of potential advantages as well as hazards that are unrelated to cancer.”

Nigeria on Red List, As UK Halts Recruitment for Doctors, Nurses

by Folarin Kehinde April 10, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

The United Kingdom has placed Nigeria on the red list of countries that should not be actively targeted for recruitment by health and social care employers.

This is coming one month after the World Health Organisation listed 55 countries, including Nigeria facing the most pressing health workforce challenges related to Universal Health Coverage.

The United Kingdom Government said Nigeria and other countries on the red list should not be actively targeted for recruitment by health and social care employers unless there was a government-to-government agreement.

According to the information obtained from the website of the UK government titled ‘Code of Practice for the international recruitment of Health and social care personnel in England,’ it said country identification follows the methodology contained in the 10-year review of relevance and effectiveness of the WHO global code of practice on the International Recruitment of Health Personnel.

“Consistent with the WHO Global Code of Practice principles and articles, and as explicitly called for by the WHO Global Code of Practice 10-year review, the listed countries should be prioritised for health personnel development and health system-related support, provided with safeguards that discourage active international recruitment of health personnel.

“Countries on the list should not be actively targeted for recruitment by health and social care employers, recruitment organisations, agencies, collaborations, or contracting bodies unless there is a government-to-government agreement in place to allow managed recruitment undertaken strictly in compliance with the terms of that agreement.

“Countries on the WHO Health Workforce Support and Safeguards list are graded red in the code. If a government-to-government agreement is put in place between a partner country, which restricts recruiting organisations to the terms of the agreement, the country is added to the amber list.”

It said if a country was not on the red or amber list, then it is green.

The amber countries where international recruitment is only permitted in compliance with the terms of the government-to-government agreement are Kenya and Nepal.

It added that active recruitment is permitted from green-graded countries where there is a government-to-government agreement with the UK in place for international health and care workforce recruitment.

“Green-graded countries without a government-to-government agreement with the UK are not published in the code of practice for England.

“The government-to-government agreement may set parameters, implemented by the country of origin, for how UK employers, contracting bodies, recruitment organisations, agencies, and collaborations recruit. These organisations are encouraged to recruit on the terms of the government-to-government agreement.

“The green country list will be updated as new government-to-government agreements are signed with the UK.

It is recommended employers, contracting bodies, recruitment organisations, agencies, and collaborations regularly check the list for updates prior to embarking on any recruitment campaign.

Exploration Will Continue Despite Your Absence, Kyari Tells IOCs

by Folarin Kehinde April 7, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), Mallam Mele Kyari, yesterday told International Oil Companies (IOCs) that Nigeria would continue to explore its hydrocarbon resources, even if the multinationals take a walk.

In recent years, Europe and America which generate most of the world’s dangerous carbon emissions, have continued to pile pressure on Nigeria and other oil-producing countries, to jettison their resources in pursuit of cleaner fuels.

However, speaking on the occasion of the Society of Petroleum Engineers’ (SPE) 2023 edition of the Annual Oloibiri Lecture Series and Energy Forum (OLEF) in Abujathemed: “Effective Gas Resources Utilisation: A Lever for Enhancing Energy Security and Achieving Net-zero Emission Goals in Nigeria,”

Kyari explained that the world is not leaving fossil fuels soon, despite the pretence.Kyari argued that within the period between now and 2035, it’s not possible to change all the vehicles and tricycles in Nigeria to electric vehicles, that crude oil well continue to be relevant.

Kyari stated that the NNPC has made massive investment to make sure its focus on gas exploration works insisting that: “But no one is going to help, so for us, we need to resort to self-help.”He added: “We need the cash flow and the cash flow is what we need to make sure tomorrow we become self-reliant. Therefore, we are leveraging the position of the oil industry,” he added.

He noted that before now, everybody was looking for oil , but noted that now Nigeria needs to start looking for gas, with some associated oil instead of the other way round.According to him, building Nigeria’s gas resourcss will mean building the country, stating the NNPC was going beyond power point presentations to the reality of actual work.

“We are a huge company. We have a $60 billion asset so we can …so we can run without help , but we need help…no one will stop us…if you want to do so, we will kick you out…we are the largest economy in Africa and many of these countries rely substantially on our prosperity.“To do this we are building infrastructure…we are engaging and we are having the line of sight to excellent engineering, financing and we will build a line all the way from Brass to Morocco and Europe,” he added.

He explained that the NNPC and government spent humongous sums to reduce oil theft in conjunction with the locals and the security agencies.“We are almost running solo, some of our partners will say get out…we have talked all the talk. If they walk away we will stay, of course we are working assiduously,” he noted.

The GCEO explained that Nigeria as a resource rich country with opportunities to sustainability create prosperity, has maintained a strong posture of balanced energy transition that recognises the role of hydrocarbon for years longer than anticipated by other jurisdictions.

With NNPC Limited as a fully commercial enterprise, Nigeria, he said, was well positioned to lead the African continent in a just and gradual energy transition.“Nigeria, like other African counties is endowed with an increasing young population, which needs a stronger economy to continue to generate beneficial employment to lift citizens from poverty to prosperity.

“This will no doubt continue to push our nation’s energy demand faster than what renewable energy technologies are likely to offer in the near future.“We are therefore leveraging the provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) to attract more investment in the Nigerian petroleum sector, to continue to guarantee access to energy while aligning with global energy transition,” he explained.

He restated the commitment of NNPC and its partners to the timely delivery of major gas pipeline infrastructure projects including the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano gas pipeline (AKK) and the $25 billion Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline, amongst others.

Kyari stated that Nigeria’s domestic gas infrastructure network has an existing capacity to transport about 6.9 Billion Standard Cubic Feet (BCF) of gas to support power generation and gas-based industries.

that there are efforts towards the creation of an international market for fossil energy that minimise gas flaring, methane, and CO2 emissions across the value chain to the fullest extent practicable.

According to him, Nigeria became the first African country to regulate methane emissions from its oil and gas sector in 2022, highlighting the Global Methane Pledge (GMP) goal of cutting anthropogenic methane emissions by 30 per cent by 2030.

Others who spoke at the event included the Chairman of SPE, Mr. Felix Obike, representatives of the chief executives of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), Mr. Gbenga Komolafe and that of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Farouk Ahmed, among others.

Breaking News: APC Thugs Attack Labour Party National Headquarters

by Folarin Kehinde April 6, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

Few minutes ago, the national headquarters of the Labour Party in Abuja witnessed massive attack and was broken into by a detachment of the Nigerian Police and thugs believed to be working for the All Progressives Congress, APC.

The Invaders who are armed reportedly pulled down the fences, burglaries, doors and window to have access to our Secretariat and in the process sacked workers and party members who were at the Secretariat.

Though, I was out of town but information has it that the agenda of the Invaders was to inaugurate an illegitimate executive which has been chosen for them by their sponsors.

This incident is coming days after a similar invasion in our Imo state Secretariat which up till now is still being occupied by the agents of the Imo state government.

Only yesterday, our Presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi through the Presidential Campaign Council alerted Nigerians of plot to hound him out of the country over APC’s covert plot in collaboration with some security agents to frame him up allegedly on matters bothering on treason.

Labour Party is only a political party which is contesting for power. The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC having conducted election ranked us third, a position we have rejected and have approached the Tribunal to contest. That is our only offence.

We therefore call on President Muhammadu Buhari to call his party, the APC to order and also rein then in from using unorthodox means to suffocate political structures in Nigeria.

A court of competent jurisdiction only yesterday ordered that I, Julius Abure remains the National Chairman, and should not be restrained from performing my duties, it therefore baffles me why the Nigerian Police should allow itself to be used to perpetrate illegalities.

We advise the Police, APC and their sponsors to play by the rules. We will no longer tolerate the often intimidation and deployment of brute forces against the party and their personnel. We demand they put a stop to abuse of power and respect the rights and privileges of other political parties, particularly, the Labour Party to contest for power.

Unilever to Stop Producing Omo, Sunlight, Lux

by Folarin Kehinde April 6, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

Unilever Nigeria Plc says it is stopping the production of the legendary OMO, Sunlight and Lux home care brands as it struggles to sustain its operations in Nigeria.

The company is “exiting the Home Care and Skin Cleansing categories to concentrate on higher growth opportunities,” according to a statement it issued on March 17.

Unilever began trading in Nigeria in 1923, introduced the OMO brand in 1960, and opened a production facility to manufacture the popular laundry brand locally in 1964. In 1982, it opened a factory in Agbara, which still operates to date.

Formerly known as Lever Brothers (West Africa) Limited, the company changed its business name to Unilever Nigeria Plc in 2001.

“We’re the longest-serving manufacturing company in the country, marking 100 years in Nigeria in 2023,” the company stated.

“The exit of these two categories over 2023 will boost the vision to make Unilever Nigeria great, building on the impressive progress made in other key aspects of the business, and is envisaged to result in overall improvement in profitability, growth and a more sustainable Unilever Nigeria Plc business.

“The Company will in due course review the optimal treatment of redundant resources and assets, in accordance with due process,” Unilever stated.

Unilever had shocked most Nigerians when it announced it was cutting back operations of some of its production in the country.

The announcement to cut production of the key product lines came just two years after the fast-moving-consumer-goods (FMCG) spun off its tea businesses (e.g. Lipton) to a separate legal entity under the Unilever global group.

Stopping operations in some product lines is part of a global brand strategy for Unilever’s parent company to improve profit margins.

Stears, an online new medium, reported that the group had sold off its entire tea business for €4.5 billion, and the Nigerian unit, Unilever Nigeria Plc, earned a one-off income of €6.3 million (i.e. N2.8 billion) — which helped boost profitability in 2021.

In 2017, Unilever had sold off its spreads business, the Blue Band butter, for €6.8 billion, and in February 2023, the British-owned FMCG warned that customers would buy fewer of its products, following a 2.1 per cent decline in volume growth in 2022 and expectations of worse volume growth this year, the reported added.
