BREAKING: Bandits demand N4m ransom for abducted NYSC member

by Folarin Kehinde August 25, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

Yet-to-be-identified bandits have demanded N4 million as a ransom for the release of a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member kidnapped in Zamfara State.

Armed gunmen allegedly kidnapped eight members of the NYSC along a highway last weekend.

The fresh graduates were alleged to be on their way from Uyo, Akwa Ibom, to Sokoto State to participate in the required National Service when their van was stopped.

In a phone call with Channels Television on Friday, Emmanuel Etteh, the father of one of the victims, Glory Thomas, confirmed the latest development.

Etteh stated that the bandits phoned him with their phone number to inform him of his daughter’s kidnapping and demanded N4 million to guarantee her return.

“They called me with their line; they asked me to pay N4 million. I spoke with my daughter because I asked how they wanted us to pay; she said we should contact the AKTC,” the troubled father said.

“Since that time, they have not called, and I have not spoken with my daughter. I don’t know if they have released them, but my daughter has not called me.”

Meanwhile, the Zamfara State Police Command has yet to react to the abduction.

‘President Tinubu appointed a corper as minister of culture’ HURIWA Alleges

by Folarin Kehinde August 25, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria has accused the Minister of Art, Culture and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa of serving as a minister while still undertaking the one-year mandatory National Youth Service Corps scheme.

In a statement on Thursday, HURIWA alleged that years back, Musawa abandoned her NYSC in Ebonyi State but later showed interest in completing it.

The group claimed that the minister was remobilised this year and got posted to a law firm in Abuja before her appointment.

The group urged the NYSC to compel Musawa to focus on either her national youth service or the ministerial appointment.

“She was confirmed by the senate without proper screening and sworn in by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as minister of arts.

“HURIWA wonders about the kind of scrutiny being conducted by the Department of State Services so much so that it wasn’t disclosed that the minister is a youth corper,” the statement added.

The Director of Press and Public Relations at the NYSC headquarters, Eddy Megwa confirmed to TheCable on Thursday, that the minister is a corps member.

“Yes she is a serving corp member,” he was quoted as saying.

A lawyer, Victor Giwa said the minister should be in her Place of Primary Assignment if she was serving.

He said, “If it is true that she is serving, she is not meant to hold public service at this time. In as much as she has enrolled to serve, everything she should be doing through her PPA. In fact, she ought to be in her PPA if it is true. I think this should have been spotted during the screening.”

The Minister is yet to confirm or give an official statement regarding the issue.

’46 million poor Nigerians not on social register’ FG slam Buhari’s minister as verification begins

by Folarin Kehinde August 25, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (FMHADMSD) Sadiya Farouq has been indicted by the National Executive Council (NEC) of robbing the poor through the National Social Investment Program, as the Federal Government begins verification of the National Social Register (NSR).

NSR is an information system that supports the outreach, intake, registration, and determination of potential eligibility for one or more social programs.

In January 2022, Farouq said over 46 million vulnerable Nigerians have been captured on the NSR, and the number was pushed up based on insecurity which led to an increase in displaced persons in need of intervention.

However, in July 2023, NEC which is headed by Vice President Kashim Shettima, dumped former President Muhammadu Buhari’s national social register, describing it as a fraud, phantom, bogus, and ambiguous program, indicting Farouq.

It was under the register that over N3trn was distributed by Farouq in the last few years, according to NEC.

Meanwhile the newly inaugurated Minister of FMHADMSD, Betta Edu, on Friday claimed that the 46 million vulnerable Nigerians captured in the NSR were neither poor nor vulnerable.

Edu said this on Friday during an interview with Channels Television, while responding to questions on the verification of the NSR.

She said, “The first thing which we are starting almost immediately is the verification of the National Social Register.

“For a couple of days and weeks, we have been going back and forth with the governors’ forum and several interested parties, saying ‘the register is okay and not okay.

“We are going to first carry out a full verification of the social register to ensure that truly it is the poorest of the poor, those who deserve to be on that list, that are on that list.

“We will verify, remove, and update the register, and it will be owned by Nigerians both at national, state, and local government areas and even in the community.”

She reiterated that the verification process will cut across the three tiers of government because they complained that one of the challenges, they encounter is non-inclusiveness.

“The process of really getting the poorest of the poor is that we have to have ownership of whatever data that must be used from the grassroots, so we can say these are the poor people, we know them, not just numbers and names, but they are human beings and we can identify them.

“This will be done through the involvement of the NEC, governors, local, traditional rulers, and religious rulers” Edu reiterated.

Uganda bans second-hand clothes, says they are for dead people

by Folarin Kehinde August 25, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni has banned the importation of used clothing into the east African country, saying it stifles the development of local textile industries and that the clothes belonged to dead Westerners.

Like most African countries, Uganda has traditionally imported large quantities of used clothing, which some consumers prefer because it is low-cost.

But local manufacturers complain the dumping of second-hand apparel swamps the market, undermining Uganda’s ability to climb the value chain of the cotton and textile industry.

“They are for dead people. When a White person dies, they gather their clothes and send them to Africa,” Museveni said on Friday.

At least 70% of garments donated to charity in Europe and the United States end up in Africa, according to Oxfam, a British charity. Reuters was not able to immediately ascertain what percentage of the donated clothing came from people who had died.

“We have people here who produce new clothes but they cannot infiltrate the market,” Museveni said at a groundbreaking ceremony of nine factories in the Sino-Uganda Mbale Industrial Park in Mbale city.

Uganda is a significant producer of cotton but much of it is exported in semi-processed form, with the value of its cotton exports ranging between $26-76 million per year in the decade to 2022, according to Uganda’s central bank.

The East African Community, a regional economic grouping of which Uganda is a member, agreed in 2016 to a complete ban on used clothing imports by 2019, but Rwanda was the only country to enact it.

As a result, the United States in 2018 suspended Rwanda’s right to export clothing duty-free to the United States, one of the benefits of the United States’ tariff and quota-free African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA).

The U.S. embassy in Kampala did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment.

Museveni said the ban would also extend to electricity meters and electric cables, saying they should be bought from factories in Uganda.

The military had last week disclosed that a total of 36 personnel of the military paid supreme price during the ambush which occurred on Zungeru-Tegina road and the crash in Chukuba area of Shiroro, all in Niger State.

The deceased, buried at the Cemetery, include: Private Habib Aliyu, who joined armed forces in 2020; Lance Corporal Nura Mohammed (joined in 2016); AB Suleiman with registration number X/1468; Lance Corporal Sunday Okopi (12NA/65/5192) and 16 others.

Speaking after laying of wreath on their graves and presentation of the national flags to the deceased’s next of kins, Musa said they joined the family members in their griefs, adding that the deaths of their loved ones would not be in vain.

“Those that did this, and those that have continued our men, wherever they are, we will get them out, we will smoke them out and we will ensure that they never have any other opportunity to kill any other person, that I assure you.”

“We will hunt you down, we will bring you to justice. We will not relent until we get those causing havocs in the country,” the distraught Defence Chief said.

Kate Henshaw reveals why NYSC should be scrapped

by Folarin Kehinde August 24, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

Veteran Nollywood actress, Kate Henshaw has urged the Federal Government to scrap the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme given the escalating insecurity.

It would be recall that eight NYSC members were recently kidnapped along a highway in Zamfara State.

Reacting via Twitter on Wednesday, Henshaw said since the security of Corps members was no longer guaranteed, the scheme should be scrapped.

The thespian urged the government to “stop putting the lives of young people at risk with moribund ideas.”

She wrote, “When I served in the North, it was a very memorable experience. Travelling from Bauchi by road to the airport was safe & then flying to Lagos just with my NYSC ID card, which also got me rebate on my ticket.

“It’s time to scrap this idea since corpers can’t travel within this country without let or hindrance!

“Stop putting the lives of young people at risk with moribund ideas. Security is a priority & needs to be sorted totally, not technically.”

Japa: The ignorance of Nigerian Youth and the dearth in intellectual property.

by Folarin Kehinde August 24, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

Dorcas Egwuje

Japa’, a Yoruba word for “to run, flee, or escape,” has become a buzzword for the aspiration that young Nigerians have to leave the country and migrate elsewhere to seek greener pastures. It’s a response to the leadership failure across decades and governments – civilian and military.

Nigeria has a population of over 200 million people, most of whom are youths. According to the Census Bureau of the United States, Nigeria’s population will surpass that of the United States in 2047. This is understandable, going by the data obtained from Macrotrends, and Statista, which put Nigeria’s annual population growth rate at 2.41 per cent; and the population growth of the US at 0.12 per cent in 2021.

Nigeria’s large population should be a blessing for, according to China’s revolutionary founder, Mao Zedong: ‘…the contest of strength is not only a contest of military and economic power but also a contest of human power and morale.’  To make a meaning out of Zedong’s quote, let’s take a look at China. It is pleasing that Nigeria as a nation also has this strength; as the most populous country in Africa. But the question is why are we having issues of mass migration?

For clearer insight, mass migration entails ‘large movement of people from one country to another; which could be voluntary or otherwise. Although migration is a global phenomenon, the rate at which Nigerians are leaving the shores of this country is worrisome.

There is no doubt that mass migration has lots of debilitating effects on the economy and on various aspects of a country’s life. But what are the triggers? What could make youths weather the storms of a foreign travel and foreign land and abandon their own fatherland?  Nigerian youths’ desire for prosperity, the high cost of living and low standard of living,  weak economy, social distress, underemployment, poverty, hunger and mounting insecurity are the causes of ‘japa’ of the Nigerian youths.

Some effects of mass migration include but are not limited to the following:

Loss of investors’ confidence: When Nigerians are leaving in droves, it weakens the spirit of foreign investors to come and establish businesses that would translate to employment generations for our teeming youths.

The message this sends to the investors is that the country’s business environment will not be favourable to investments; and lack of jobs drives social ills.

Brain drain: One of the consequences of mass migration on the economy is that of the brain drain. Our experienced and qualified hands both in the academia and healthcare sectors, for instance, leave the country in droves for greener pastures. This has left the young upcoming ones without requisite experiences in the sectors of the economy.

In the healthcare sector, the old experienced hands that are supposed to groom and mentor the upcoming practitioners are being poached by foreign countries. This sad reality applies also to our universities and higher institutions today, where only few experienced hands are still found in the classrooms.

Today in most of our tertiary institutions, it is only teaching that takes place in classes without corresponding learning experiences; as few lecturers battle with large populations of students.

Low economic productivity: Optimal productivity is only possible when a good number of competent and skilled workforce perform their duties. Besides the fact that it saves time and energy, it also reduces possible cases of errors on the job.

Higher cases of errors on the job resulting in deaths: Without hostile reference to medical professionals, a good number of skilled and talented Nigerians had lost their lives or suffered from medical negligence of some practitioners arising from their hurried and shallow medical examinations that require calm and thorough diagnoses either due to lack of experiences or larger number of doctor-to-patient ratio.

Negative perception about the country: Mass migration of our people in a desperate manner would make ‘outsiders’ form unfavorable and unrealistic collective opinions about Nigeria. Our citizens would also be perceived abroad as those who had no good future in their homelands till they migrated.

The cases of Ghana and even South Africa that had troubled our nationals in xenophobic attacks in the recent past cannot be forgotten in a hurry and not even at all.

Hence, the following practical solutions are urgently needed to reverse this unfortunate trend.

First, we must quickly embark on social mobilisation and behaviour change in communication by engaging and motivating relevant bodies and partners across board to instill the spirit of patriotism and confidence in our fellow citizens; using effective, repetitive communication and persuasion techniques. We need to make our fellow citizens believe that economic prosperity is attainable anywhere Nigeria inclusive.

Also, governments at all levels must sincerely tackle triggers of mass migration such as poverty, hunger and unemployment; and invest in modern agriculture, ICT and digital economy. To achieve these, government must genuinely craft the right macro-economic policies that will make us competitive while putting us on the same pedestal as other countries.

Furthermore, we need to promote social inclusion, plug growing wealth gaps and focus attention on programmes that will enhance standards of living and reduce costs of living.

Also very necessary and timely, we must get relevant educational bodies to craft curricula that will especially teach our young population survival skills, beyond theoretical entrepreneurship being taught, innovation and problem-solving skills right from schools; and seek  to enhance our knowledge.
