Burkina Faso Coup: Military Officers Remove Leader Damiba

by Folarin Kehinde October 1, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

An army captain in Burkina Faso has announced on national television that he has ousted military leader, Lt. Col. Paul-Henri Damiba.

Ibrahim Traore cited Lt. Col. Damiba’s inability to deal with an Islamist insurgency as the reason for his ouster.

He also announced that borders were closed indefinitely and all political activities were suspended.

Lt Col Damiba’s junta overthrew an elected government in January, 2022, citing a failure to halt Islamist attacks.

But his administration has also not been able to quell the jihadist violence. On Monday, 11 soldiers were killed when they were escorting a convoy of civilian vehicles in the north of the country.

Earlier on Friday, Lt Col Damiba urged the population to remain calm after heavy gunfire was heard in parts of the capital.

More than a dozen armed soldiers – most with their faces covered – appeared on the Radio-Television broadcaster shortly before 20:00 local time.

“Faced with the deteriorating situation, we tried several times to get Damiba to refocus the transition on the security question,” said the statement signed by Traore.

“Damiba’s actions gradually convinced us that his ambitions were diverting away from what we set out to do. We decided this day to remove Damiba,” it said.

A curfew from 21:00 to 05:00 was also announced.

Before dawn, shots and explosions were heard in the capital, Ouagadougou, some of them coming from near the presidential palace and main military barracks.

After sunrise, the normally bustling city was largely deserted, with soldiers on the streets blocking some roads and guarding key strategic points.

State television had stopped broadcasting and more gunfire was heard later in the day.

Lt Col Damiba said there was a “confused situation” created by “mood swings” among some soldiers as rumours of a coup intensified.

Urging people to remain calm and avoid social media speculation, the military leader said there were “negotiations under way to bring back calm and serenity”.

In January, Lt Col Damiba ousted President Roch Kaboré, saying that he had failed to deal with growing militant Islamist violence.

“We have more than what it takes to win this war,” the junta chief said when he was sworn in as president in February.

But many citizens do not feel any safer and there have been protests in different parts of the country this week.

On Friday afternoon, some protesters took to the capital’s streets calling for the removal of Lt Col Damiba.

The Islamist insurgency broke out in Burkina Faso in 2015, leaving thousands dead and forcing an estimated two million people from their homes.

The country has experienced eight successful coups since independence in 1960.

King Charles Image Revealed On British Coin

by Folarin Kehinde September 30, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

King Charles III’s image on coin has been revealed for the first time.

The 50p coin is the first piece of new money that features the new monarch and will begin circulating in December.

The King’s portrait will first begin appearing on a special £5 Crown as well as on 50p coins that commemorate the Queen, MyLondon reports.

Nicola Howell, chief commercial officer at the Royal Mint said: “We expect customers will start to be able to receive the commemorative range from October and then we expect the 50p memorial circulating coin to be appearing in people’s change probably from December.”

Martin Jennings sculptured the King’s effigy which the Mint said has been personally approved by Charles.

Chris Barker from the Royal Mint Museum said: “Charles has followed that general tradition that we have in British coinage, going all the way back to Charles II actually, that the monarch faces in the opposite direction to their predecessor.”

He described the portrait as: “Dignified and graceful, which reflects his years of service”.

The Latin inscription surrounding the effigy reads: “• CHARLES III • D • G • REX • F • D • 5 POUNDS • 2022” which translates to: “King Charles III, by the Grace of God, Defender of the Faith”.

Anne Jessopp, chief executive officer of the Royal Mint, said: “The Royal Mint has been trusted to make coins bearing the monarch’s effigy for over 1,100 years and we are proud to continue this tradition into the reign of King Charles III.

“Although technology has progressed, we continue to honour British craftsmanship passed down through the centuries.

“Our team of skilled modellers, tool makers and engravers will ensure that the King’s effigy will be faithfully replicated onto millions of coins.

“Her Late Majesty ruled with heart and devotion for 70 years, and this memorial collection commemorates her remarkable legacy as Britain’s longest-serving monarch.

“To ensure everyone can hold a piece of history in their hand, the 50p will also enter circulation in the UK.”

Human Rights Group Task EFCC To Arrest PDP Chairman

by Folarin Kehinde September 30, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Civic Rights group has called on the EFCC to arrest Ayoricha Ayu the Chairman of the PDP for corruption.

HURIWA, on Friday, charged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to arrest Peoples Democratic Party’s National Working Committee members and the party’s National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, over the return of N122.4 million alleged bribe to the party.

HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, in a statement, described as despicable the alleged grand larceny and graft ongoing within the PDP under Ayu, especially the allegation that he gave N122.4 million to four NWC members to silence them over an allegation of financial misappropriation to the tune of N15 billion realised from the sale of nomination and expression of interest forms by aspirants that participated in the PDP primary back in May.

The group said that the party has not come out to deny the allegations by at least four members of the PDP showed that there is an unprecedented corruption ongoing within the PDP.

HURIWA said for PDP to maintain that the payments were regular and legal is a slap on the faces of decent citizens, adding that it is inconceivable for elected office party leaders who ought to be accomplished men and women doing their profitable careers and professional vocation to now be said to be paid accommodation allowance is to stand logic on its head.

“Do they want to tell us that these officials sent accommodation allowances or whatever called, were hitherto homeless before they got elected into the NEC of the PDP and if they are homeless, what kind of mansion would cost an average person over 20 million Naira for just two years? These persons defending the indefensible should be arrested immediately,” HURIWA said.

Recall that in separate letters to the PDP, the NWC members had said the monies had been paid into their account without their knowledge. They also claimed they thought the monies were for their “house rent” until after a newspaper publication that exposed them.

The NWC members who returned the money are the National Vice Chairman (South-West) Olasoji Adagunodo, the Deputy National Chairman (South) Taofeek Arapaja; National Vice Chairman (South), Chief Dan Orbih and National Women Leader, Prof. Stella Affah-Attoe.

While Adagunodo, Orbih and Effah-Attoe got N28.8 million each, Arapaja was paid N36 million.

PDP had fixed its presidential nomination form and expression of interest forms N40 million, governorship N21 million, Senate N3.5 million, House of Representatives N2.5 million and State House of Assembly N600,000.

“Also, a dollar bazaar had occurred especially during the presidential primary of the party in Abuja back in May where the highest bidder got the ticket after allegedly doling out thousands of dollars to complicitous delegates nationwide,” HURIWA’s Onwubiko said.

HURIWA’s Onwubiko further stated, “The return of N122.4 million by at least four PDP NWC members as alleged bribe to keep quiet over billions of naira collected by the party at the last primary is another evidence that Nigeria’s democracy is challenged.

“The PDP chairman and all the NWC members have cases to answer at the EFCC and the anti-graft commission must immediately arrest them for interrogation into the alleged bogus corruption.

“It is shameful that a party which claims it wants to govern Nigeria is involved in this kind of scandal. What shall Nigerians expect from such a party should it produce the next president? Corruption galore!

“Nigerians must vote correctly in the next election. Parties and candidates with record of corruption like this should never be given a chance to enter Aso Rock as Nigeria’s president in 2023. They are selfish and concerned about their gains at the peril of the common man.”

Owners Of Nigeria, Let My People Go

by Folarin Kehinde September 30, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Hurray! Tomorrow, Nigeria will be 62! This season in 1960, the British stranglehold of slavery was dismantled. Today all around the nation is an upbeat celebration replete with hope. The afflictions besieging the nation remain innumerable.

What torments Nigerians today are the backlashes of the cruel collusion between the British and Nigerians they handpicked pre-independence as “owners” of Nigeria who will not let my people breathe. Every year, Nigeria grows older but does not grow up. We are united but unity is far from many hearts. We face immense struggles in all shapes and on all fronts.

Many of the elements that make up this country are still groping through pages of history books to find the justification for why Lord Lugard amalgamated a people who can’t see eye-to-eye. The last century of the union has been tumultuous. The marriage doesn’t seem to make sense any longer to very many. The truth, however, is that behind our many travails are the actions and inactions of “owners” of Nigeria who will not let my people breathe.

In their diurnal gatherings, these “owners” of Nigeria determine who holds which specific gavel of authority and controls how much. In their nocturnal get-togethers, they position men and women of evil like-minds. They recycle their ilk in the purlieu of power and hold the country by the jugular.

As a result of the depravity, retrogression and backwardness become the portion of the populace. Who truly are these people who won’t let Nigeria and Nigerians breathe? Whom are these fellas with their knees on our neck as the prosperous and endowed nation struggles to suck in breath of life?

They are living and breathing human walking demons. They unleash miseries immeasurable on the people. This treatise is not about naming names; some names readily creep to mind. We know many of them while their agents operate from forlorn dark spaces destroying the beauty of our space, ruining our economy, impoverishing the people and deploying religion and ethnicity to create a lavish lacuna that helps them perpetrate their penchants for cornering our commonwealth.

No political party gets power except the ‘owners’ of Nigeria give a nod. No man becomes president except they assent a yes approval. These ‘owners’ bring only torment and torture on the people and aggrandizement for themselves. They are behind Nigeria’s freefall into Gehenna.

Walk down with me to where Nigeria once was and strut along with me to where we are today as we celebrate 62 years of freedom that exists only on paper. In the 1980s, the US dollar sold for a mere 0.78k. Today, $1 hovers around N700. Once upon a time, Nigeria was a net exporter of refined petroleum products.

As of today, imports currently account for over 80% of Nigeria’s refined product supply, creating a huge potential for local refining. Peugeot cars were once put together in Kaduna, Volkswagen cars in Lagos, Leyland in Ibadan, and ANAMCO in Enugu. Together, these giant structures flooded the market with locally assembled cars, buses and trucks.

What happened to us? Nigeria Airways was about the biggest in Africa at that time as Nigerians cruised around the world in the big bird. Greed and gluttony fashioned and permitted by ‘owners’ of Nigeria grounded the big bird and we are not sure if it will ever fly.

There is nothing Nigerians cannot do only if the ‘owners’ of Nigeria let them. We heard that our local automobile assembly, Innoson Motors, supplied 80% of the jeeps that the Nigerian Army’s been using over the last 10 years.

How long will Innoson stay afloat without the interruptive brigandage of the ‘owners’ of Nigeria? The Innoson testament affirms the fact that if only ‘owners’ of Nigeria will let Nigerians breathe, there’s nothing Nigerians cannot do for Nigeria.

I saw the picture of the official car of the Anambra State Governor, Charles Soludo. It was not made in America, not put together in Japan and not made anywhere in Europe. But it was made by Innoson Motors in Anambra State, Nigeria.

There is nothing Nigerians cannot do for Nigeria if the system lets them breathe!

Nigerians leave Nigeria in droves because of the very bitter environment created by the waggery and knavery of ‘owners’ of Nigeria in every area of Nigerian life. In almost all nations of the world, you will find Nigerians who are putting their brains to work for other nations.

Not too long ago, a Houston hospital witnessed a handful of Nigerian doctors successfully separating 10-month-old conjoined twins in a 26-hour surgery that made waves in America and the medical world. The 12-man medical team comprised Professor Oluyinka Olutoye, his anesthesiologist wife, Dr Toyin, and one Dr Mrs Oluyemisi Adeyemi-Fowode, a paediatric gynaecology fellow in the hospital.

A Nigerian engineer, Jude Igwemezie, who lives in Canada was commissioned by the Iraqi government to design and construct a $500m Iraqi rail system. The project includes the construction of what is described as a viable rail transportation network for the city of Najaf.

Men who build roads, tunnels and bridges for other nations have been chased away from their homeland by the ‘owners’ of Nigeria. Jelani Aliyu from Sokoto State is the talented mind behind the design of the Chevrolet Volt automobile, one of the most admired American specifications globally. Aliyu is a Senior Creative Designer with General Motors in Detroit. This Nigerian just made history.

Upon the doggedly dependable and broad shoulders of Nigerians rest the present and future of many nations. This is the story of Nigeria. Young and old are doing great exploits in their careers and scattered all over major cities all over the world. Presidents of foreign nations count on them; so do governors of states.

Multi-billion-dollar corporations desire them and small upcoming businesses do not ignore them. These men and women come from all ethnic backgrounds and their hearts pant for Nigeria; a nation blessed with men and endowed with means.

These are the brains that the misbehaviours of ‘owners’ of Nigeria have chased out of the nation. Nigerians will never breathe easy until these demons breathe their last. For now, Nigerians are stuck until they unstuck themselves.

If Nigerians don’t make aggressive demands for freedom from the hands of their oppressors and tormentors, ‘owners’ of Nigeria will continue to own Nigeria and enslave freeborn Nigerians.

But I rope my hope around millions of others, all around the world, that the best days for Nigeria are not too far out. We continue to dream that tomorrow will be greater than today and yesterday.

As we celebrate this particular year, I sense that something unusual is about to happen to, and for, Nigeria. I sense a quiet revolution of sorts at the polling booth. I sense a putting to sleep of those ‘owners’ of Nigeria who have killed Nigeria softly. I echo the voices of many who hope that this new year begins the end of misery and mess in Nigeria.

I believe that a new season is around the corner when a new Nigeria will be ushered in. The people are more than the ‘owners’ of Nigeria. Nigerians are more powerful than these phantom powers who see Nigeria as a plantation of slaves.

The voice of the people will be heard whether the ‘owners’ of Nigeria like it or not. The Nigerian environment will no longer condone the status quo of lockjaw’s deplorable mess. I sense a change.

I sense a sweet aroma. By this time next year, I sense a new and refreshing Nigeria. So, help us God.

Bloomberg Poll Show Peter Obi As Nigeria’s Preferred Candidate

by Folarin Kehinde September 29, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Peter Obi the labour Party candidate is the top choice to become the next president of Africa’s most populous country, according to a new opinion poll.

A clear majority of respondents said they intend to vote for Peter Obi, a former state governor, in elections scheduled for February.

The results of the survey conducted for Bloomberg News by Premise Data Corp. were published on Wednesday as the official campaign to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari kicked off.

Of the 92% of participants who said they’ve decided how to vote, 72% named Obi as their first choice. Of those who are still unsure, 45% said the 61-year-old is their preferred candidate.

Presidential Race

Poll shows Obi is most-favored candidate before February election

 Decided VotersUndecided Voters
Peter Obi72%45%
Bola Tinubu16%23%
Atiku Abubakar9%17%

The San Francisco-headquartered data company surveyed 3,973 Nigerians from Sept. 5-20. Respondents to the app-based poll were selected from quotas developed by age, gender and location across the country’s six geopolitical zones.

Results were then weighted against the original quotas to ensure national representation. About 44% of Nigerians own smartphones, according to the Alliance for Affordable Internet.

The candidates of the two parties that have ruled Nigeria since the restoration of democracy in 1999 fared less well.

Bola Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress garnered 16% of decided voters and 23% of those yet to make up their minds.

Atiku Abubakar of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party tallied 9% and 17% respectively.

A former two-term governor of the southeastern Anambra state, Obi is running on the ticket of the Labour Party, which won a single seat in the Senate and House of Representatives in the last election in 2019. The APC and PDP dominate both chambers of parliament.

Peter Obi Supporters

In a relatively short time, Obi has built up an enthusiastic base known as “Obidients” — initially online, but increasingly in the streets — who aim to cause an upset on Feb. 25. Still, the Labour Party has a much smaller nationwide presence than the two rival parties, which are experienced at turning out voters across the vast West African country.

Obi’s supporters will need to rapidly scale up their organizational infrastructure if they’re to capitalize on the campaign’s momentum.

Obi originally sought the PDP’s nomination before withdrawing from a party election that Abubakar, a former vice president and perennial presidential candidate, won in May. Tinubu, who used to govern the commercial hub of Lagos and is the most influential politician in southwestern Nigeria, triumphed by a landslide in the APC’s primaries the following month.

The five-month race to the general elections gets underway as Nigerians contend with soaring inflation, a plunging currency and pervasive insecurity.

Production of the economy’s historical mainstay — crude oil — has also slumped to multi-decade lows, while the Buhari administration’s debt service bill in the first quarter of the year exceeded the revenue it was able to earn.

Three-quarters of respondents said that their country is heading in the “wrong direction.”

A combined 88% listed the economy and jobs, corruption, and security — three pillars of the campaign that brought Buhari to power in 2015 — as the most important issues facing their communities.

Peter Obi

More than 65% named Obi as the candidate best able to improve the economy, tackle corruption and reduce insecurity. Tinubu ranked second on each measure, ahead of Abubakar.

Obi also came out in front in two other opinion polls published since Sept. 15.

Despite the general disenchantment about Nigeria’s trajectory, most respondents said that they trust the election to be run fairly and think their vote will make a difference — even if almost half expect the polls to be marred by violence.

Nigerian Police Operatives Help Man Replace Flat Tyre

by Folarin Kehinde September 29, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Despite the unpleasant reputation that our police force has, there are still some good eggs in the police institution.

A Nigerian Man has expressed gratitude to the Nigerian Police Force, for helping him fix his flat tire after he was left stranded.

The man who was driving through Iseyin Ibadan Highway developed a flat tire. According to him, he flagged many motorists for help because his jack got spoilt in the process of trying to change the tyre, but none of them stopped to help him.

When he was about to resign to his fate, some good officers from Dugbe Police Station came along.

They stopped to inquire from the man what was wrong. After narrating his ordeal to them, they went out of their way to fix and replace the flat tyre with a spare one.

When they were done, he begged them to take N3,000 as a token of appreciation but they rejected his plea.

Their response was that they were only doing their jobs and did not need to be rewarded with money.

The three officers are: Officer Tunmise, Officer Daudu and Officer Michael of Dugbe police station, Ibadan.

The lucky man prayed for God’s blessings on the police officers, for coming to his aid.
