NAF Neutralize Bandit Leader and Terrorist In Kaduna State

by Folarin Kehinde October 11, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Men of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) have neutralized scores of bandits and terrorists in Kaduna forest.

A notorious bandit leader in Kaduna State, Ali Dogo, and 30 of his fighters were part of the people killed during the operation.

It was learnt that Dogo, also known as Yellow, and his gang members, were neutralized by airstrikes undertaken by the Air Component of Operation WHIRL Punch, over the weekend.

While confirming the bombardments of Yellow and his fighters, a defence intelligence source of the Air Force said that the notorious bandit leader, and his terrorists had fled from Niger State to one Alhaji Gwarzo”s house at Yadi in Giwa Local Government Area for safety, following NAF aircrafts sustained bombardments on his location in Niger, recently.

The source said: “Unfortunately for Yellow and his fighters, while they were having a meeting, NAF aircraft struck Alhaji Gwarzo’s house, leaving everybody in the building neutralized including Yellow.”

Meanwhile, intelligence also gathered that separate bombardments on same day targeting terrorists at a location 33nm Northwest of Mando in Kaduna, were also undertaken.

“Following credible intelligence of terrorists leaders and their foot soldiers converging under tree covers at the location for a meeting, the location was struck with several terrorists killed,”

Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, NAF Spokesperson, confirmed the successful strikes noting that “the Air Component in keeping with the directive of the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Oladayo Amao, would continue to sustain offensive operations against these criminal elements in collaboration with the Land Component and other security agencies to rid the Joint Operations Area and indeed the entire Northwest of terrorism and other acts of criminality”.

Fire Guts Kogi State House Of Assembly

by Folarin Kehinde October 10, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Kogi state house of Assembly has been engulfed in flames in the early hours of today.

An early morning fire has engulfed the Kogi State House of Assembly complex located at Crusher Area, Lokoja.

The fire ripped through the roof of the Chamber, causing extensive damage to the floor of the house.

The Speaker of the house, Mathew Kolawole, and the state security Adviser, Commander Jerry Omodara, were among the early callers at the assembly complex.

As at the time of filing this report,no one has been able to ascertain the source of the fire.

The Speaker of the Assembly said that he suspects sabotage but fell short of where the suspected sabotage might be from.

Asked whether it might have been linked with the recent happening between the Assembly and Dangote group, he said that that is left to the security to determine.

“We should leave security people to do their work and give us a report going forward,” the speaker said.

However,a source who do not want his name in print said he suspected explosion but couldn’t say who might be responsible.

Jerry Omodara, the special adviser on security to the Kogi state governor, who was at the scene, refused to speak with journalists on the possible cause of the fire.

Mathew Kolawole, speaker of the Kogi assembly, said that the fire will not affect the sitting of the assembly, noting that the mace was not destroyed.

“We got a call this morning from our people here. We are leaving the security people here to do their job,” he said.

“This does not affect the sitting. The mace is not affected and we can actually sit anywhere and conduct our legislative activities.”

The speaker added that security operatives will investigate the incident to unravel the cause.

As at the time of writing this report, the fire has been abated.

Inside Details of China’s Link in Nigeria Mining sector

by Folarin Kehinde October 10, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Numbers published in an audit report by the Nigeria Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (NEITI) suggest a significantly healthy China and Nigeria bilateral relation. At least, the country’s mining sector gives a glimpse of it.

Data sourced from NEITI, a transparency watchdog, showed companies owned by Chinese nationals are the largest mining companies in Africa’s biggest economy.

The NEITI’s report showed mining activities in Nigeria in 2020 were carried out by 102 companies. Information about beneficial ownership was provided for 65 of these companies.

Details of ownership show that 28 of them were owned by Chinese nationals. This means 43.08percent of the companies that mined minerals in 2020 were owned by Chinese nationals.

Further insight showed Nigerians owned 23 of these total 102 companies. The companies owned by Nigerians made up 35.38 percent of the total that mined minerals in 2020.

Beneficial ownership of other companies showed Lebanese owned 3 of these companies, and two were owned by Germans. One company was owned by an Indian, a Liberian, and an American.

The NEITI also showed that 102 companies produced 64.61 million tons of 38 different minerals. The top five minerals were limestone, granite, sand, laterite, and clay.

Production output by the company’s national ownership shows companies owned by Nigerians produced the highest output in 2020. These companies were able to produce 33.49 million tons of mineral products in the year. These made up 51.85percent of the total mineral output.

Companies whose owners were not specified produced the second largest output in the year. Their output, which amounted to 21.39 million tons, comprised 33.12percent of the total output.

The Chinese company produced the third largest output in the year. These companies produced 4.24 million tons of mineral products, accounting for 6.57percent of the total.

German and Lebanese-owned companies produced the fourth and fifth largest output. 3.46 million tons were produced by German-owned companies, while those owned by Lebanese produced 1.45 million tons.

The market value of these minerals as of 2020 summed up to N120.49 billion. Of these, the minerals mined by Nigerian companies were N28.76 billion. This was 23.87percent of the total market value.

Those whose owners were unknown were valued at N76.81 billion, comprising 66.24percent.

The Chinese-owned companies placed third behind those by Nigerians. These companies produced output valued at N5.68 billion, comprising 4.71percent of the total market value.

However, China was the primary benefactor of the output from the mineral sector in 2020. The total export volume in 2020 was 32,992 tons from 30 different minerals. Out of this, 26,550 tons of these were exported to China. This represented 80.48percent of the total export volume.

This means other countries with export destinations received 19.52percent of the 32,992 tons exported.

Inside details of China’s link in Nigeria’s mining sector

The export value shows that 85.07percent of the $42.46 million in exports went to China. China’s export value of the mineral product in 2020 was $32.12 million. The other countries exported 14.93percent of $42.46 million worth of mineral products from Nigeria in the year.

A report by KPMG, a multinational professional services network, and one of the Big Four accounting organisations showed despite the widespread economic impacts of the coronavirus in 2020, Nigeria’s mining sector exceeded the budgeted revenue of the Federal Government (FG) in 2020 by about 10 percent (N2.09billion as against N1.9billion).

The sector also increased its contribution to the Nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by about 23percent in 2020.

Despite its huge potential, researchers at CSL Stockbrokers warned that illegal mining activities had continued to wipe gains in the sector.

They said, “Despite the endowment of mineral resources in Nigeria, the solid minerals sector has significantly underperformed with a meagre contribution of less than one percent to the GDP over the years.

“The figure is, however, solely from formal channels as the artisanal and small-scale mining activities that constitute over 80 percent of the current mining activities in the country are unaccounted for.”

This is where Nigeria’s mining problem lies. Nigerians, noted the Capstone report, have practised informal artisanal mining for centuries.

It said, “Today, the activity is largely poverty-driven and supports the livelihoods of at least 500,000 people. Partly due to its informality, artisanal mining is associated with many negative externalities such as environmental degradation, crime and health hazards.

“One tragic example is the 2010 lead poisoning outbreak in Nigeria’s northwestern Zamfara State, which killed approximately 400 children and has affected thousands more.”

Job creation is another benefit Nigeria is missing out on by leaving the sector underdeveloped.

Australia has about 320,000 direct jobs attributable to the mining sector, while over 200,000 jobs have been created in Canada through the mining sector.

Nigeria, rich in over 34 solid minerals, has over 23 million of its citizens with no jobs.

Tompolo Uncovers Over 58 illegal Crude Oil Bunkers

by Folarin Kehinde October 10, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Over 58 tapping points used for stealing the nation’s crude oil has been discovered in Delta and Bayelsa states. The unlawful business of the oil bunkers was uncovered on Sunday by Tompolo and his officials.

This discovery was made by the EX-MILITANT Leader, Government Epkemupolo, also known as Alias Tompolo. He and his security officials had uncovered both 16 and 42 different tapping points used by the crude oil bunkers on the nation’s pipelines in delta and Bayelsa state, summing the total to 58 on Sunday.

Tompolo said, “As of today (Sunday), we have discovered over 58 points tapping points that oil bunkers have used in stealing crude oil from the nation’s pipelines in Delta and Bayelsa states.”

“In Delta, three major crude pipelines, including the trans-Escravos and Trans- Ramos lines have been tapped by oil bunkers.

“The tapping points that were traced on Friday were with the help of the Nigerian security, which was why inside the rain and everything, we could trace the lines

“We are doing the work together with the security agents; we are only providing intelligence for the security to assist to do the work. Therefore, everybody, NNPCL, and security agencies are working together in a very good spirit now.

This act made the bunkers exasperated with the leader of the defunct movement for the emancipation of the Niger delta (MEND)  for exposing their unlawful business, in the past few weeks, sent him and operatives his Tantita Security Services Limited, TSSL, threat messages.

On the threat messages to his boys, he asserted, “As for threat messages, that is normal, even this morning, they sent messages to me, but I think it is something we can handle.”

The ex-militant leader, who sounded optimistic they would soon curtail illegal oil bunkering, said, “With the way we are going now, we are getting cooperation from all the security agencies, both the ones in the state here and at the top. Therefore, by the grace of God, in no distant time, we will stop this largely.”

He said the company was not facing any major challenge, adding, “At a very point in time, we will always provide the intelligence and security people will come and do the work.”

On the barricading of creeks by oil bunkers with trees, he said: “That is the more reason we are involved, if we see any creek that is blocked with trees, we will bring in motor-saw people to cut it and we go inside.”

“Where the security people cannot even go, we will first go there and ask them to follow because we cannot do anything with the security people. In addition, with the way all of them are actually cooperating, we will achieve the desired result.

Tompolo also commended the effort of the military and the Nigerian national petroleum company limited for collaborating with him on the operation, promising to bring an end to the menace.

History Made As Cristiano Ronaldo Scores 700 Club Goals

by Folarin Kehinde October 10, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Cristiano Ronaldo has made history after scoring yesterday against Everton.

He has become the first player in football history to score a 700 goals combined goals for club.

Ronaldo until yesterday hadn’t scored for Manchester United in the Premier League this season.

However, after coming in for an injured Anthony Martial in the 29th minute, he received a defence-splitting pass from Carlos Casemiro in the 44th minute and was able to find the back of the net to silence the Everton fans.

Having started his career in 2002, 700 club goals mean that Ronaldo has averaged 35 goals a season.

Ronaldo has played for four clubs during his career – Sporting Lisbon, Manchester United (twice), Real Madrid and Juventus.

He scored five goals in 31 appearances for Sporting, 450 in 438 matches for Real and 101 in 134 games for Juventus. In his first spell for United he netted 118 times in 298 fixtures for the club and in his current second stint has 26 in 48 matches.

It’s the latest stunning achievement in the forward’s career – either individually or as part of a team.

Ronaldo is also the highest goal scorer in international competitions as his record 117 goals for the Portuguese national team added to 700 club goals make him the official top goal scorer in football history with a record tally of 817 career goals.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s 700th club goal comes 20 years and two days after his first goal for Sporting Lisbon.

by Folarin Kehinde October 10, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) has trained over 40 retirees from Ondo State on special skills development.

The programme was organized as a part of SMEDAN’s efforts towards skill development and financial independence for the retirees.

Over 40 retirees were drawn from both State and Federal government civil service.

They were trained under the specialized skills development for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) and were empowered with tools like Vulcanizer Machines, sewing machines and Shoe making equipment.

Those tools were given according to the area of speciality the retirees were trained under.

Speaking during the programme, the Director General of SMEDAN, Mr Olawale Fasanya, said the programme was put together to alleviate poverty among retirees and to promote self-reliance, saying the retirees would also contribute to the economic development through job creation.

Fasanya who disclosed that the programme took place in the six geo-political zones in the country, explained that the programme was specially developed to address boredom and lack of financial security, which were some of the major challenges confronting retirees.

He expressed confidence that the training would support the retirees in attaining a stress-free retirement period and also ensure the development of new skills towards self-reliance and financial independence.

He said “I implore you to ensure you utilise the knowledge acquired from the vocational and entrepreneurship training to start or improve your existing business and take it to the next level.

“Most importantly, the equipment the agency is providing for you to run your business is expected to be used for the business and not to be diverted to other uses or sold outrightly.

“The agency’s business development service team will always be with you and support you to effectively translate the newly acquired knowledge, information and equipment to visible and concrete improvements in your business,”

The Director-General assured stakeholders that the agency would continue to support all entrepreneurs towards ensuring job creation, wealth creation, poverty alleviation and food security.

Peter Obi Releases Campaign Manifesto As Campaigns Begin

by Folarin Kehinde October 7, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Peter Obi releases manifesto ahead of campaigns for the 2023 Presidential campaign season, promises transformative governance once elected as president.

The manifesto reads:

Title: Prospects of Transformative Governance In Nigeria

We will offer a new brand of transformative and purposeful leadership. The overall goal of my administration shall be to streamline governance, make it more responsive, transformative, effective, less transactional, and therefore efficient and cost-effective.

Thinking through 2023 and beyond, we must think seriously about a leadership that is imbued with competence, capacity, credibility and commitment. Accordingly, we will pursue intangible assets of good governance, rule of law, security of lives and properties; We will ensure that we have these assets in place and stress asset optimization. We will strike a strategic balance that allows us to promote and protect national interest, while meeting our ECOWAS obligations.

We will rebuild Nigeria’s military power, promote economic growth, and enhance its technological prowess with a view to improving Nigeria’s diplomatic influence in sub-regional, regional and global affairs.

Restoring leadership will require that we reassert proactively, Nigeria’s leadership role in African affairs through constructive engagement, peacekeeping duties, and using existing sub-regional and regional forums as well as bilateral platforms for dialogue on current and emerging challenges. We will continue to enhance our sphere of influence via peacekeeping, and trade and investment initiatives.

We shall ensure that in moving Nigeria forward, no state or community will be left behind. Pursuant to its statutory responsibility to protect, our government will promote equity in power and resource sharing. The federating units will enjoy discernible autonomy. Resources will also be shared equitably. A higher derivation paid to oil or solid minerals producing states will not be tantamount to other states not receiving federal allocations that should keep them viable. We must transcend the rhetoric that bedevils a robust debate on some of these national questions.

We will respect the principles of federal character, affirmative action and gender balance; but no longer at the expense of merit.

We will tweak the security architecture, which will entail reform of the security sector and governance. We will Restructure, Re-equip and Reorient the Nigerian Police: This will include 3 level policing- Federal, state and community.

We will build a Compact, Robust and Ready Mobile Police Force with Rapid Response Deployment capabilities; and Legislate the Establishment of State Police based on Community policing. We will raise the population to police officer ratio to a higher level.

A properly manned, equipped and technologically driven security system with particular emphasis on re-focusing the military on external threats and border protection and police on internal security threats and law enforcement; swift prosecution of criminals, bandits and terrorists; enhanced coordination among security agencies; and upholding the rule of law.

Integrate the activities of the National Intelligence and Security Agencies by establishing a Central Reporting Intelligence loop under the authority the Minister of National & Homeland Security.

Establish a National Command and Control Coordination Centre for the efficient management of actionable intelligence, resource allocation and force deployment. Membership should consist of representatives of all security agencies on a need-to-know basis.

The oil theft is not petty pilfering. It is organized crime by a syndicate that involves a certain degree of sophisticated intelligence and logistical arrangement. We must admit that oil theft is happening because there is domestic and external collusion. The government and the people have the collective responsibility to protect national assets. On my watch those responsibilities will be accorded high priority.

Foreign and National Security policy initiatives, might in the long-term entail rebuilding, repositioning and sustaining ECOMOG, as the arrowhead of a West African Security partnership. This is to counter terrorist threats and international subversion of the sovereignty of the West African region of which Nigeria must re-establish her place as a regional power.

We will explore ways of cushioning the forex demands by mainstreaming those components of Diaspora remittances that remain opaque and informal.

We are challenged by high youth unemployment, which stands at 33.3%; 54% for the youth; and 20 million out-of-school-children. We must give this country back to the Nigerian youths. Half of our 200 million people are below the age of 30.

Harnessing our national youth strength and demographic dividends intelligently, must start with curbing the high youth unemployment and creating funding access to enable our youths’ become entrepreneurs and drivers of our Small and Medium Scale enterprises (SMEs).

We will have zero tolerance for corruption; block leakages and cut the cost of governance. Our total commitment to transparency and accountability in government business is the only credible way to achieve limited to zero corruption.

We will enforce the legal framework protecting foreign investors and their indigenous partners. This is the only way to tamper monopoly and capital flight.

As governor of Anambra State, my administration achieved close to a 60-40 gender balance in appointive and elective positions. The national target has hovered around 30-35%. We intend to progressively aim for between 35-40%, with aggressive gender mainstreaming action plan and rigid benchmarks.

As part of our monetary policy, we will seek to re-establish the independence of the CBN; and commit to a credible and transparent plan to normalize the exchange rate and bring inflation to single digits.

We will remove import and forex restrictions and insist on a single forex market. The current system penalizes exporters who bring in forex by forcing them to sell at a rate that they are unable to source for forex when they need to purchase forex.

This multiple exchange rate regime encourages capital flight and deters investment, which has further worsened Nigeria’s forex situation.

My top priorities on getting into office:

– Production-centered growth for food security and export.

– Securing and Uniting Nigeria.

– Effective legal and institutional reforms (rule of law, corruption and government effectiveness).

– Leapfrogging Nigeria from oil to the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR).

– Expanding physical infrastructure through market-driven reforms (unleashing growth-enabling entrepreneurship and market-creating innovations).

– Human capital development that empowers competitiveness; and Robust foreign policy that restores Nigeria’s strategic relevance.

We are spending more on recurrent expenses. And we are borrowing frivolously. I am not against loans per se; but we must stop borrowing for consumption. All loans must be invested in regenerative projects. We must operate within available resources and strive for a balanced national budget as cost saving measures. Ending the leakages including the subsidy regime and improving our tax regime should do the magic.

Lack of political will and lack of synergy between the Executive and Legislative arms has resulted in a costly inertia in tackling our oversized government. The result is persisting turf fights and competition among several overlapping agencies, and the resultant wastages. Cost-cutting measures must start with rationalization and harmonization. Pruning the size of government will be imperative

Panic As Flooding Devastates The Abuja-Lokoja Road

by Folarin Kehinde October 7, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Flooding has devasted thousands of homes in Lokoja, the capital of Kogi state, leaving many travellers and residents stranded.

The flooding has left many without homes in Lokoja, causing the submerging of homes, farms and roads in the city. At least 5 people have reportedly died from the incident.

Flood from the River Niger has overflowed onto the Lokoja-Abuja road, submerging houses and farmland and causing many to flee from their houses as they seek safety.

The floods, as witnessed by many, have led to gridlock and delayed journeys for travellers plying the route.

Wide areas of the state of Kogi are underwater after the Niger and Benue rivers broke their banks. Floods in Lokoja, state capital of Kogi, Nigeria, late September 2022. Lokoja sits at the confluence of the Niger and Benue rivers.

The roughly 196 kilometres highway is one of the most critical roads in the country, being the major link between the North and South for the movement of people, goods through vehicular transportation.

Reacting to the issue of the flood, Engr Jimoh Kajogbola, the federal controller of works in Kogi State gave a warning statement for motorists and travellers to opt for alternative routes.

He said, “Due to the flooding in the country, River Niger has overflowed the Lokoja-Abuja dual carriageway at Koton-Karfe and rendered it dangerous to road users.

“Abuja-bound motorists from the South-West are advised to pass through the Ilorin-Mokwa-Bida road, while motorists from the East and South-South are advised to pass through Makurdi-Lafia road.”

He also urged that alternative routes should be followed for motorists plying the South-South, South-East and South-West bound motorists from the Northern parts of the country.

He said that the Abuja-Lafia-Makurdi-Otukpa road or Abuja-Bida-Mokwa-Jebba road should be considered for now until the water subsides at Koton-Karfe.

BREAKING: Appeal Court Orders ASUU To Resume Work

by Folarin Kehinde October 7, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Appeal court has ordered ASUU to respect the National Industrial Court ruling and call off its strike immediately. The appeal court asked the members of the Academic Union to begin work with immediate effect.

The court of appeal sitting in Abuja has ordered the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to call off its strike.

At the court session on Friday, the appellate court said ASUU should obey the order of an industrial court which directed the suspension of the strike before seeking to appeal the judgment.

ASUU has been on strike since February 14 to press home the demand for improved funding for universities, and a review of salaries for lecturers, among other issues.

After several meetings to resolve the strike ended inconclusively, the federal government proceeded to the national industrial court to challenge the action.

The industrial court, in a ruling delivered on September 21, granted the federal government’s application for an interlocutory injunction to restrain ASUU from continuing with the strike pending the determination of the substantive suit.

Not satisfied with the ruling, ASUU approached the court ofappeal seeking leave to challenge the lower court’s decision.

The court on Wednesday had asked the parties to explore the option of an out-of-court settlement.

However, at the court session on Thursday, both parties agreed to proceed with the hearing after failing to reach a settlement.

Delivering a ruling at the resumed court session on Friday, a three-member panel of the appellate court granted the union “conditional leave” to appeal the industrial court’s decision.

The panel led by Hamman Barka said for ASUU to file its notice of appeal within seven days, it must show evidence that its members have resumed work immediately.

The panel held that failure to adhere to the order will make the appeal incompetent before the court of appeal.
