Terrorists Negotiator Asks For National Honour and Recognition From Buhari

by Folarin Kehinde October 19, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

It is no news that Nigeria negotiates with terrorists.  In most cases, hundreds of millions of Naira are parted to terrorists in form of ransom. But asking for national honors and recognition, a demand recently made by Dr. Abdulmalik Attah, for terrorist-negotiators is repulsive for most Nigerians.

Many believe that the way and manner President Muhammadu Buhari’s has been handling the menace of insecurity in the country has exacerbated it and thus embolden the terrorists more than it has abated it. Just most recently, Dr. Abdulmalik Attah, one of the Presidential Committee members who negotiated and got the abducted Kaduna-trained passengers released has validated the claim that negotiation with terrorists is not new to President Muhammadu Buhari-led Government.  He went as far as considering a national honor and recognition for his committee.

In fact, Dr. Attah praised his members so well and gave account of how the security apparatus of the country aided their mission of getting the abducted passengers released.  He did not stop there, he asked for a national honor for his committee for interfacing, on behalf of the Federal Government, with the terrorists and getting the passengers released. .

Dr AbdulMalik Attah went as far as accusing his co-negotiated Malam Tukur Mamu of frustrating previous efforts of the government at releasing the abducted passengers.  He made the clain during an interview with
Channels TV. Atta’s father was among the abducted passengers of the ill-fated train abducted midway by terrorists, popularly called bandits by the Government.

Atta said Mamu did everything within his reach to thwart the federal government’s efforts at rescuing the hostages for his own interest.  Daily Trust had reported that Attah said the families of the abducted passengers have parted with over $200,000 previously to the terrorists without having the passengers released.

“Because of Mamu’s introduction of money into the rescue process, the victims’ families had parted with over $200,000 prior to the chief of defence staff’s intervention.

“The Presidential Committee made life-threatening sacrifices, as we had to go into the forest to meet with the terrorists and even slept in the bush.

“It has been six months and one week, but we thank God everything has come to an end now, thanks to the support from the federal government through the office of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). We were able to go into the bush and bring back the remaining of our family members.

“We achieved this not through somebody who betrayed the committee and the government, I am talking about the person of Tukur Mamu who did everything within his reach to thwart the efforts of the government for his own interest. As we all know, he is in the hands of the government now. But we thank God, all our family members are back now.

“The bandits never asked for money ab-initio, Tukur Mamu introduced money into the whole thing and derailed the process and kept everybody for the past six months.

“We parted away with about 200,000 US Dollars. Thank God the CDS took it upon himself and put in place a committee that never asked a kobo. Every sacrifice being done so far has been personal towards ensuring the release of the victims.

“In the committee, I can assure you that I worked with credible people of the highest order. If I have my way, all of them would be given national honors.  We risked our lives, went to the bush, we slept there in the bush.

“We heard the complaints of those people (the terrorists), even though we knew what they have done is wrong, but we had to engage them.

“Going forward, our security agencies must synergize their operations and the government should open more room for further engagements.”

Putin Declares Martial Law In Occupied Parts of Ukraine

by Folarin Kehinde October 19, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

President Vladimir Putin has declared martial law in the four  of Ukraine where Russia controls territory after Russian officials warned of a looming Ukrainian assault on the key southern city of Kherson.

The Russian president said in televised remarks to members of his security council that: “We are working on solving very complex, large-scale tasks to ensure a reliable future for Russia, the future of our people,”

The law, published on the Kremlin website, gives far far-reaching emergency powers to the Russian-installed heads of Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson provinces, which Russia recently proclaimed as annexed after sham referendums.

The Kremlin decree also puts Russia on a stronger economic war-footing. Putin ordered an “economic mobilisation” in eight provinces bordering Ukraine, including Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014.

Putin said he was granting additional authority to the leaders of all Russian provinces to maintain public order and increase production in support of Moscow’s war, which is entering its eighth month. The law also limits the freedom to move in and out of eight Russian provinces bordering Ukraine.

In his speech, Putin also hinted at a further escalation of the war, calling the Ukrainian authorities “satanists” who have ignored Russia’s warnings.

“Russia has repeatedly given a chance to the command of the satanists to come to their senses. But we were not heard or ignored. Now everything will be different, we will dictate the terms,” Putin said.

Shortly after Putin’s statements, his spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, said the government was not planning on closing the country’s international borders.

SMEDAN To Leverage D-8 Regions For Economic Development

by Folarin Kehinde October 19, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) has made its commitment towards leveraging partnership within the D-8 to promote, encourage, advance and support the activities of MSMEs at the national level as well as within the D-8 region to further strengthen economic, trade and commercial integration and linkages.

D8, also referred to as Developing-8, is an international organisation specifically established for the development cooperation among countries like Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey.

The Director-General, SMEDAN, Olawale Fasanya, stated that with a proposal for a D-8 centre already submitted, the agency is optimistic that the establishment of the D-8 Centre for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) will unleash substantial development impacts.

Fasanya has also promised to work with key stakeholders to cause a positive shift in the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) development narrative in Nigeria, given its critical but highly endangered status in the economy.

Fasanya made the remark at an interactive session with the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (Gocop) and editors, where he shared his vision and approach to ensure regular inter-agency cooperation and networking with stakeholders to leverage on available opportunities to close the gaps among key players within the MSME space.

Emphasising how important the sub-sector is to national economic growth and the several challenges which the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing Ukraine-Russia have further worsened, Fasanya said the challenges of MSMEs usually border on access to finance, market, equipment, information, technical and entrepreneurial skills and workspace.

Reeling out his vision for the sub-sector, he said he had already started engaging with the staff of the agency and other MSMEs-enabling stakeholders, as a continuous exercise both locally and internationally.

“I will be meeting some key stakeholders in Lagos to enable me to harvest inputs directly from real MSMEs players. I am however aware that they were consulted during the process of reviewing the National Policy but the MSME space is very dynamic requiring regular engagements and feedback.”

Breaking: Second Niger Bridge Is Completed – Fashola

by Folarin Kehinde October 19, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Babatunde Fashola, the minster of Housing and Works has confirmed to the general public that the 2nd Niger Bridge has reached its completion stage.

The Minister stated this at a press briefing to President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja on Wednesday, 19 October 2022.

According to him, the only factor delaying the commissioning of the road is the construction of the link road which the recent surge of flooding has impeded.

He said, “I can confirm that the second Niger bridge itself is finished. People can walk through the bridge now unimpeded. What remains is the four-kilometer link road on the Asaba side.

“Right now, our dredger is in place, we have to rebuild the road by reclaiming sand, the recent surge of flood has slowed us down. On the Onitsha side, there is a 7kilometer road that links the bridge and the Onitsha-Owerri interchange.”

FCT: Dape To Life Camp Road, An Accident Waiting To Happen

by Folarin Kehinde October 19, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Dape to Life Camp Road FCT, looks like any other normal road when it is dry. Thousands of Abuja residents ply the road on a daily basis while going about their daily business. This includes students, business people, corporate workers e.t.c.

However, whenever it rains the road starting from AA Rano Fueling Station to Angwan Cement becomes a death trap due to excessive flooding.

Motorist who are unlucky to ply the road during the flooding have their ‘hearts in their mouths’ for fear of their lives.

Whenever it rains, water covers the whole road from AA Rano Fueling station, up till angwan cement. The water partially submerges all vehicles, bikes or tricycles (keke napep) that are on the road at that particular moment.

This flooding makes it difficult for even skilled drivers to use the road effectively and extra caution must be put in place to avoid accidents or loss of lives.

Water is known to reduce the friction between the tyres of a car and the road, thus making it difficult for drivers to have full control over their vehicles, and increasing the chances of a vehicle sliding and falling off the road.

Indeed, there has been such cases where due to the flooding along that axis, Keke Napeps have been washed away into a river opposite AA Rano.

Even though the negative effects of the road can be clearly seen and many motorists have complained about the dangers they face on that road, the FCT administration is yet to find any lasting to the problem.

Whether they are waiting for lives to be lost before they swing into action is what one cannot phantom.

A while ago, some artisans were contacted to work on the road. It is not to my knowledge whether they were contracted by the FCT administration or through community effort.

However, the artisans did such an unprofessional job that the next rain brought all their work to nothing.

One is left to wonder if they were under funded or they failed to utilize the cash given for the job and intentionally did a shabby job only for them to pocket the profits.

It is therefore pertinent, that the minister of the FCT, Mohammed Musa Bello must rise up to his duties which is to protect the lives and ensure the safety of FCT residents.

He must find a lasting solution to the flooding problem before it leads to the destruction of cars, Lives and property.

I call on the minister and the entire FCT administration to look into the plight of the road users that ply the Dape to Life Camp road daily and solve the flooding issues immediately.

Kwara State Governor In Billion Naira Tax Evasion Scandal

by Folarin Kehinde October 18, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Not returning tax to the appropriate authorities is a crime in Nigeria. Offenders are charged with criminal offenses and could face fines and jail time. However, investigations by secretReporters showed that the Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq handed over a contract of 1 billion naira to a company notorious for tax evasion.

This might mean that the governor is encouraging tax fraud or he might partake in the share of the tax that was supposed to be paid to the government.

SecretReporters searched through the Kwara State public procurement portal and found that Freshvine Limited was awarded a contract for the supply of industrial machines and equipment for the proposed Garment Production Village, Ilorin, on March 24, 2021, at One Billion Seven Hundred and Ninety-Five Million (#1,795,000,000.00).

The company was founded in Ibadan, Nigeria on June 27, 2007, with registration number 696746. Its office is located at 35, OSHUNTOKUNAVENUEOLDBODIJA, IBADAN, OYO STATE.

Details of the awarded contract to Fresh Vine LTD

SecretReporters investigation showed that the company violates the financial act of 2019 by engaging in tax evasion with “inactive” status, as shown on the website of the Corporate Affairs Commission. The CAC is the organization in charge of business registration in Nigeria.

Inactive Search Result of Fresh Vine LTD on CAC Portal

Inactive firms are defined by the agency’s rules and regulations as legal entities that have not submitted their annual returns to the Commission under Sections 417 through 424 of the Companies and Allied Matters Act, 2020. Every corporation must make and deliver such to the Commission at least once each year, according to Section 417 of the Act. Any corporation that misses the deadline for convening this meeting will be subject to a fine under Section 237 (5). As a result, the contract that was awarded violates Section 43 of the Public Procurement Act 2007.

Mr. Aliyu Yazid, CAC’s Deputy Director of Public Affairs, reportedly acknowledged to Dataphyte in an interview that any company with an “inactive” status indicates that the corporation has neglected to submit annual returns to the Commission.

According to him, the submission of annual returns is essential because it enables the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) to evaluate the functionality and operation of every company vying for a government contract. He added that “Filing of annual returns show details of the Company’s AGM and also tax returns and others.”

He also noted that “At the point of registration, all companies are informed to file a return of their accounts and payment of taxes to the Commission within stipulated time – as the repository of such documents.” Mbim David Okutinyang and Sunday Adegboyega serve on the board of directors of Freshvine Limited.

Similar to this, on April 29, 2021, the Ministry of Communication gave a company called Piointinio Tools Ventures the contract for printing the state calendar and diary for the year 2021. According to a search by SecretReporters, the firm does not exist, as there is no trace of its registration on the CAC portal.

The deal is alleged to be a case of misappropriation of public funds and is worth Ten Million Naira (#10,000,000.00).

How Do You Prevent Church Rats From Eating Poisoned Holy Communion? – Tinubu Asks

by Folarin Kehinde October 18, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Many have expressed worry over the mental fitness of the presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, after the incoherent reply he gave when asked about how he intends to tackle climate change.

Tinubu, while fielding questions about climate change at the Arewa Interactive Committee event, described climate change as “A question of how do you prevent a church rat from eating poisoned Holy Communion.”

“We are a poor nation. They say firewood is not for fetching. They say we need to plant more trees and they are not giving us money. We need to tell the West, if you don’t guarantee our finances and work with us to stop this, we are not going to comply with your climate change,” Tinubu said.

The recent blunder is coming 48 hours after he described the governor of Kaduna State as being creative in turning a rotten situation to a bad one during his address at the seventh Kaduna Economic and Investment Summit

In recent times, massive flooding has ravaged communities across the country, displacing citizens and submerging farmlands.

Mr Tinubu’s response that he would not comply with precautionary actions except if being funded by the West suggests that Nigerians would have to suffer the devastating effect of flood triggered by climate if he wins next year’s election.

Meanwhile, reacting to the statement, the spokesperson of the People’s Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Management Committee, Dino Melaye, has said that Bola Tinubu, is neither fit nor prepared for the Nigerian presidency.

Melaye described Tinubu’s statement as unguarded and an insult to Christians.

In his statement, he said: “The APC presidential candidate, Ahmed Bola Tinubu, plunged into new depths of desecration when, by an unguarded and unrelated flow of thought, he despised the body of Christ by profaning the sacrament of communion and besmirching the church”.

Just In: Thugs Attack Atiku Abubakar Presidential Rally In Kaduna

by Folarin Kehinde October 17, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Suspected political Thugs have invaded the venue of the rally for the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, in Kaduna.

Senator Shehu Sani broke the news of the thugs invasion via his Twitter handle on Monday.

“Thugs just invade the Atiku Rally venue in Kaduna with swords and machetes,” Shehu Sani wrote on Twitter.

The former vice president confirmed this in a post on his verified social media handles on Monday.

This is coming a few days after thugs attacked supporters of the party in Zamfara State leading to the death of at least one person, while several others were injured.

Atiku in the post, called on President Muhammadu Buhari to call supporters of all political parties to order in a bid to tackle reoccurrence of such incident.

He wrote, “I have just received emergency reports of attacks on PDP supporters by thugs sponsored to scuttle the ongoing PDP campaign rally in Kaduna State. This is undemocratic and against the Peace Accord all parties signed up for just a few weeks ago.

“I urge President Muhammadu Buhari to call on all parties to call their supporters and members to order and to ensure that campaigns, just as with the elections themselves, are kept free, fair and safe”.

Casualties recorded during the attack could not be ascertained as of the time of filing this report.

FG Promise Support To NDPB In Data Protection

by Folarin Kehinde October 17, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Federal Government has pledged its support to the Nigeria Data Protection Bureau (NDPB) of its commitment to creating an enabling environment for the Bureau to achieve its statutory obligations by ensuring that the needed legislative framework is put in place.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, gave the assurance when the management team of the Nigeria Data Protection Bureau, led by its National Commissioner/CEO, Vincent O. Olatunji, paid him a courtesy visit in his office.

SGF assured that the Federal Government would do everything within its capacity to support the Bureau by ensuring that the needed legislative framework and service-wide circulars are worked out.

In his words: “I have listened to you and I have seen the prospects of the Bureau. I would want to assure you that if there is anything I can do to ensure that the necessary legislation is put in place as quickly as possible, I’m ready to do it.

Because you are operating with regulation that was put up earlier, but you need a legislative framework that would strengthen your hands, even your surveillance over organizations that are supposed to process data – your ability to impose fines and penalties in cases of infractions.

So I want to thank you for this visit and to assure you that the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation is willing to be one of your strongest advocates. And if need be, at the appropriate moment, you can work along with the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office so that you can craft a service-wide circular to ensure compliance by the MDAs”.

He lamented the level of fraudulent activities being perpetrated by scammers who had unauthorized access to data of citizens with the aim of swindling them. He added that with the creation of the NDPB, the era of data theft would be a thing of the past.

“Data theft is one of the most thriving businesses in the world. Everywhere you go, every country is putting measures in place so that the data of its citizens are protected because accessibility to people’s data, unauthorized ones, would invariably allow anybody doing that to take absolute control over the people’s lives, from their financial transactions to their health records, to their access to certain information which can be manipulated. So I am glad that we are starting well, by laying the foundation that is required, which is having an institution by way of the Bureau,” he said.

Speaking earlier, National Commissioner/CEO of Nigeria Data Protection Bureau (NDPB), Vincent O. Olatunji, said that the purpose of the visit was to acquaint the SGF on the activities of the Bureau and to seek collaboration with his office toward the implementation of a robust data protection regulation in Nigeria.

He also appealed for the institutionalization of data protection in the public sector through the issuance of a service-wide circular to all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) for compliance with the provisions of the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR).
