No quarantine or vaccination hub: As Singapore-Australia travel bubble in Process

by Leading Reporters March 14, 2021
written by Leading Reporters

Singapore is discussing the possibility of an air travel bubble which will allow residents of Singapore and Australia to travel between both countries without the need for quarantine, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Sunday (March 14).

It noted however, that the Republic is not in discussions on the concept of a quarantine centre or vaccination hub.

It was responding to media queries following a report in The Sydney Morning Herald on Sunday, which said that the Australian government was working on a plan to establish Singapore as a quarantine gateway, holiday destination and potential vaccination hub for returning Australians, international students and business travelers.

“We are not in discussion on the concept of a quarantine centre or vaccination hub,” said MFA in a statement.

Options being looked at include a travel bubble and priority travel for some groups.

“Singapore is currently in discussions with Australia on the mutual recognition of vaccination certificates and resumption of travel with priority for students and business travellers,” said the ministry.

“We are also discussing the possibility of an air travel bubble which will allow residents of Singapore and Australia to travel between both countries without the need for quarantine.”

Australian nationals can already transit via Singapore without quarantining to return home if they travel on approved transit routes.

“Australia is a key partner of Singapore in the region,” said MFA.

“We are in discussions on how to cooperate in opening our economies safely, taking into consideration the Covid-19 situation in both countries. Thus far, Singapore and Australia have been able to control the Covid-19 pandemic.”

Australia currently has a one-way “travel bubble” with New Zealand, allowing New Zealanders to visit without quarantining, though the scheme has been suspended a number of times in response to coronavirus outbreaks.

Singapore so far has only one travel bubble – with Hong Kong. This has yet to kick in due to the increase in Hong Kong cases last year.

The city state is looking to establish reciprocal travel bubbles with more countries, but this has not taken off so far.

Transport Minister Ong Ye Kung has said these may well become a reality in the second half of the year with places with low to moderate infection rates.

Flash Back: Politicians, Celebrities Keeps mum over Fuel Hike

by Leading Reporters March 14, 2021
written by Leading Reporters

Notable Politicians, Celebrities and Labour Union has kept silent over the increase of fuel by the government from N147 to N212 per litre.

The Country under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari is currently groaning under heavy taxes and levies, insecurity, increase in prices of food stuff and a host of others now grapples with another hardship of fuel increase as long queues at filling stations and increase in transportation fare are seen all over the country.

NLC Protest over Fuel Hike in2012

Following this drama, increase in prices of foods stuffs rose to over 100% due to agitation and ultimatum given by the southwest governors to Fulani herdsmen to vacate their state or face the consequences, in retaliation they (Fulani/Herdsmen) too ban the exportation of major food commodities to the southwest and other parts of the country who are in dire need for food.

Citizens Protest Fuel Hike 2012

While Nigerians still battle with this series of quagmire, they were shocked to the bone when on March, 12, 2021, the price of fuel increased from N147 to N212 per litre.

The Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency, (PPPRA) after few hours of the price increase bowed to pressure by deleting an earlier published template announcing that the new price of petrol has reached N212.6 per litre.

Photos Of Politicians, Celebrities Insulting Jonathan Over Fuel Price In 2012

The Federal having seen the reactions of Nigerians like a toothless dog but at the mercy of only the media gave a wishy-washy apology for the increase.

According to the minister of State for Petroleum, Timipre Sylva, he said neither he nor President Muhammadu Buhari was informed, and regrets “distress and inconvenience, the unfortunate information might have caused.”

Photos Of Politicians, Celebrities Insulting Jonathan Over Fuel Price In 2012

It would be recalled that in 2012, notable and respected Nigerians, Politicians, Institutions, Celebrities and even religious leaders lambasted former President, Goodluck Jonathan after he increased fuel price from N65 to N87. At the time, the dollar rate was still manageable and the prices of foodstuff and many other items in the market were still affordable.

Photos Of Politicians, Celebrities Insulting Jonathan Over Fuel Price In 2012

The situation now seems callously unbearable as those that took the streets to protest in 2012 and are supposed to lend their voices to this maladministration of a government suddenly kept silent on the fuel increase.

As it seems, average Nigerians are finding life difficult at the moment. They are beginning to regret the choice they made in 2015 and 2019. Although this is the case, they are however handicapped.

Nigeria’s Minimum Wage: Labour has a point

by Leading Reporters March 14, 2021
written by Leading Reporters

By Tonnie Iredia

Last Wednesday, state capitals across Nigeria witnessed protests by members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) against the plan to remove the country’s minimum wage from her Exclusive Legislative List.

Expectedly, several elite voices have since condemned Labour on the subject. While some, such as governors elected on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress APC, faulted the approach of the workers, others have described the protests as an attempt to stop the legislature from doing its work.

No one appears to remember that the National Assembly from where the bill was initiated is expected to consist of the people’s representatives whose primary obligation is to be on the side of the people. If so, which people in Nigeria requested their representatives to help them remove the minimum wage item from the exclusive legislative list or who are the legislators helping?

Opposition against the bill can hardly be surmounted. Already, many state legislators who addressed the workers’ protest last week expressed support for Labour making the reasoning of those in support of the removal to be unclear to everyone. It is argued that because some poor states may not be able to pay what others can afford, each state should have power to negotiate directly with its workers.

The argument is comical because a national minimum wage is supposed to be a figure that every state can pay; leaving more viable states with the option to pay far more than the barest minimum. In which case, is it not rational to leave the determination of such a benchmark to a central, neutral level? Against this backdrop, one is persuaded to agree with Labour that perhaps those against our apex workers’ union are yet to understand the ordinary meaning of ‘minimum’ as a term.

Why can’t Nigeria determine the least pay for her citizens in every part of the country? After all, the United States that our people constantly cite probably because our constitution is modelled after theirs has a national minimum wage. At the last count, no less than 29 American states had set their own minimum wages above the federal figure.

With respect to the reasonableness of the decision of Labour to organize protests against the bill which seeks to reorder the status of the minimum wage, one is tempted to conclude that our leaders are probably unable to appreciate that protests are legitimate and that they are covered by law in our country and elsewhere.

A peep at sections 38, 39, 40 and 41 of the Nigerian Constitution would reveal a combined effect of a fundamental human right of the people to assemble with like-minds to voice out their displeasure, disappointments and indeed their support for a policy. It is therefore unfair to echo the rather old-fashioned perspective in many parts of the country that persons who engage in protests are either unpatriotic or anti-establishment. It is hoped that this unprogressive stance will wear out soon, so that our nation is not dispossessed of what it takes to move side by side with other enlightened societies.

There is also nothing new or strange about the decision of Labour to protest. Perhaps some people would have preferred the option of dialogue, which at this point makes little sense in view of the long-drawn out dialogue which preceded the determination of the current minimum wage of N30, 000 that was done by Labour, Government at Federal and State Levels and the Private Sector. Six governors, one per geopolitical zone represented the states. The figure was negotiated over and over again and agreed upon before it was made into law. Labour imagines that it is states who have since breached the law that are now seeking a new path through a bill that removes the subject from the Exclusive Legislative list.

One would have thought that having reached a consensus earlier within the tenure of our current President, the determined minimum wage should have been allowed to work instead of looking for ways to thwart an agreement. Besides, we need to give peace medals to the current labour leaders who have not towed the path of their aggressive predecessors that harassed previous administrations on the same issues that are still begging for solution today.

We honestly cannot blame Labour now because many of the issues they have raised are not being tackled. For instance, Labour says minimum wage is a global phenomenon about which Nigeria should not seek to be an island on its own. They contend that the issue of a national minimum wage in the Exclusive Legislative List was settled as far back as June 16, 1961 when Nigeria joined other Sovereign nations to ratify the International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention 26 which prioritized the subject.

Another important point that has remained ignored is the issue of what happens to the informal sector when the minimum wage is put in disarray. Who will fix the minimum wage for the private sector and our numerous unskilled workers? In addition, if it is unfair for workers to earn same wages in different states that are not equally endowed, is it fair for governors of poor states to be equally remunerated with governors of more viable states? Would it not have been more palatable if the need to readjust wages began with our leaders who should lead by example?

The take-home pay of our national legislators has remained a disgusting issue. Each time it is raised, legislators team up as a union to place a smokescreen on the allegation. Those who publicly speak on the subject reveal only their basic salary, what about the outrageous allowances that even the body established to fix their remuneration has always disowned? Some even tell us of the ratio of funds available to the three arms of government to justify what the legislature gets. Is it only funds that should be shared by ratio, what about workforce? Those who speak privately for fear of suspension confirm millions of Naira at the disposal of federal legislators in Nigeria every month – a posture that is not amusing to the ordinary citizen. This probably explains the general belief that it is only the working class in our country particularly the lowly paid that are required to make sacrifices to stabilize Nigeria during this precarious financial situation.

History tells us how our leaders many years back without prompting, cut their expenses during periods of national financial difficulty. During the Murtala/Obasanjo military regime for example, austerity measures introduced to revitalize the nation began from the top when the most expensive official vehicle for top office holders was reduced to a Nigerian-assembled Peugeot car.

Today, the more the financial crisis, the more imported vehicles are procured for legislators and executives as if they belong to a group beyond the people they claim to represent. What this suggests is that if states are over-empowered at this point in time to determine wages, some of them will not only strangulate workers, they may procure private jets for retrieval of their own special allowances which being so high, might be in the sky. It is therefore hard to not agree that in the current agitation for workers’ survival, Labour has a strong point.

Group Writes ICPC Boss Over His Men’s’ Failure To Bring SEC Official Nelson Oleghe To Book Over N70.8m Fraud

by Leading Reporters March 14, 2021
written by Leading Reporters

The Global Information Team Nigeria has petitioned the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on the alleged compromise, connivance and intent to subvert the arraignment of a staff of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Mr. Nelson Oleghe, accused of receiving the sum of N70.8 Million (Seventy Million, Eight Hundred Thousand Naira) using two companies with the following details Del-fings Nigeria Ltd with GT Bank Plc Account No. 0023920038 and Aizmozz Ventures Ltd, with Zenith Bank Plc Account No. 010796468 with the Securities and Exchange Commission as the paying institution which contravenes the laws of the Commission and once got one Bashir Funtua and another lady dismissed for similar offences.

In a petition exclusively obtained by Leadingreporters, and signed by the group’s Team Leader,
Segun Amao, the group says everything is pointing to the fact that the ICPC officials in charge of the case have been compromised.

“The issues of concern here is why will a highly respected anti-corruption agency like ICPC be delaying the arraignment of Nelson Oleghe?

“Is it that some unscrupulous ICPC officials who are against the anti-corruption crusade of the Buhari administration are at work?

“Whatever the response of the Chairman of the Commission may be, our intelligence findings has revealed that a particular ICPC head of investigation has been bribed and compromised thereby undermining the powers of the officer who has for long concluded charge sheet for arraignment of the suspect.

“There has been several reports of corrupt allegation against some ICPC officials. It is high time the chairman of the Commission exonerate the Commission from this weighty allegations by commencing the immediate trial of Nelson Oleghe in line with President Buhari’s stance against corruption which earned him a high reputation amongst the comity of nations.

“In a letter dated 18 of August 2020 signed by one Dennis Idoko, Assistant Director (legal) of the ICPC, FOI desk officer. He wrote that investigation against Nelson had been concluded and all the allegations against the suspect had been substantiated and found to be true.

“What then is stalling his arraignment? These are questions the Commission Chairman needs to provide answers to. Or is it that some individuals in the commission are untouchable as regards openly frustrating the patriotic and unbiased investigation carried out only for an ICPC officials to be deprived from charging the suspect to court in the guise of Covid-19 stagnating court sittings in the FCT.

“Hiding under Covid 19 as excuse for not prosecuting the suspect is most laughable as courts have been sitting, notwithstanding the Covid-19 Pandemic to the extent that even high profile cases are known to have been tried and dispensed within lower, high, appellate and even the apex Court.

“Or is it that Nelson Oleghe is above the law of the country? Whatever the case may be, the world is watching to see the immediate steps the ICPC Chairman intends to take.

by Leading Reporters March 13, 2021
written by Leading Reporters

The Retired General Evangelist Christ Apostolic Church, Worldwide, Prophet S.K Abiara has charged the Federal Government of Nigeria to punish bandits and criminal elements terrorizing the nation.

Abiara while speaking at a press conference in Abuja over the weekend stated that justice needs to be done so that criminal act such as kidnapping and banditry must stop in Nigeria.

“The criminals are very rampant, and this is because there is no justice. I will like to advice the government that criminals should be punished, and proper justice be done, this will allow others to stop the criminal act”.

Meanwhile, Abiara noted that it is time Nigerians rise to pray as one nation so that peace will reign in the land.

Abiara however urge the federal government to follow the steps of developed nations in curbing the movement of cattle herders in Nigeria.

“Though the government is trying on this issue but I will like to advice the government to borrow a leaf from developed nations where you cannot see illicit movement of cattle across their road.

“Countries such as USA, CANADA, AUSTRALIA and the likes, most of our leaders too travel abroad, they can never see these animals moving about the city center, we must find a way around this.

“It is very embarrassing even for visitors to see this happening in our country, so I want to advice the government to make adequate arrangements like other developed countries”. He added.

Abiara further advice that it is time states go into farming instead of waiting for a particular part of the country to bring in food.

“I want to advice all the states to go into farming, when all states have sufficient food and livestock, they will not bother about shortage of food, so I want to advice all the states to go into farming and livestock farming too to ensure food sufficiency”.

Also, Abiara stated that in order to ensure peace and tranquility in the country, the elected leaders must fulfill their campaign promises to the electorates while the masses too should exercise patience for government to fulfill her mandate instead of resulting to violence.

“We are in a democratic government and as such the government must fulfill campaign promises and must listen to the yearning of the electorates.

“This is very important because when you do not listen to the people and fulfill campaign promises, this will cause violence, and the masses too should be patient on the government particularly the youth”.

Abiara, through his foundation distributed food items, cash donations and empowerment scheme for the less privilege, noted that people are hungry, and as such the need for the donation.

He thereby advised well meaning Nigerians and philanthropist to use their wealth for the poor as exemplified by Jesus Christ.

“People are very hungry, and it is very good to lend a helping hand, so am using this opportunity to call on those who have should share with the less privileged in our society”.

by Leading Reporters March 13, 2021
written by Leading Reporters

The Director, Weights and Measures Department, Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr. Abubakar Galadima sealed Shema filling Station and a cement depot in Abuja over shortchanging consumers the Nigerian government.

Galadima who lead a team of the department on a surveillance activity to food stores, cement depot and filling stations in Abuja stated that the exercise aimed at generating revenue and ensure that Nigerians are not cheated.

LR-Sealed Shema Filling Station

According to Galadima, Shema filling station was sealed because of their inability to produce their letter of certification and over charging of motorists.

“Generally, all the filling stations that we visited are good except this particular station, and I have directed that this place should be sealed.

LR-Cement Deport

He added that the cement factory was sealed due to re-bagging of 50kg cement and reduced to 44kg.

Galadima assured that both companies will be shut for the next 28 days until they comply with their terms.

“This place will be shut for 28 days, we have a tolerant level, it is above or below five points we seal the station, if they are ready to comply, and conform with our directives then they will be unseal but if they refuse to do this, it will remain close for a month after which we take them to court for prosecution.”

LR-Sealed Shema Filling Station

“We are not going to allow a situation where consumers will be shortchanged, so if we find anything going contrary to our justification, we are not going to allow it”.

“They are shortchanging Nigerians by over charging motorists and that is not allowed by our act, that is why we are sealing this place and until they respond adequately, we are not going to unseal it.”

He however assured that the department will visit all filling stations to ensure compliance and consumers have value for their money.

“We are going to all filling stations within our powers to make sure that they pay their dues, we have a responsibility to ensure compliance, Nigerians can not shortchanged but have value for their money.”

Covid – 19: FG imported Worse Vaccines for Nigerians – Dino Melaye

by Leading Reporters March 11, 2021
written by Leading Reporters

By: Kenny Folarin

Former Senator representing Kogi West, Senator Dino Melaye has alleged that the Federal Government imported a worse vaccine for Nigerians.

The Senator in an interview with Root TV noted that the Federal Government did not take the interest of Nigerians at heart but imported a vaccine with most side effect and less potency.

According to Maleye, there are four notable vaccines and the least potent of the four is the one Nigeria government imported and the one imported by the Nigerian government has the worst side effect.

“What am saying is that Nigerians deserve the best, Federal government must carry out citizen diplomacy, they must show that they love there citizen and desire the best for there citizens.”

“If you go through this four vaccines, Johnson and Johnson is far better than what they have brought, Pfizer is also better, so if you look at the total trial effectiveness of this vaccines, you will find out that AstraZeneca is 62%, 14 days after second doze while Pfizer is 95% 28 days after the second doze and again, modena is 94% while Johnson and Johnson is about 70%.”

“So what am saying in essence is that the one that Nigeria government brought is the one with the least potency of effectiveness.”

Dino also added that “If you also look at the side effect, this same one imported by the Nigerian government has the worse side effect which include pain, headache, tiredness, muscle ache, fever, joint ache and nausea.”

He further stated that the 300 billion Naira budgeted by central bank is on the high side considering its side effects.

“So what am saying is that the Nigeria Government did not go for the best putting Nigerians into consideration and with the budget the central bank made available for this vaccine (300billion), it is outrageously calamitous”

“it is very unfair for them to have gone with the least vaccine and anything produced in India, you can not compare it with the ones produced in America or United Kingdom.”

However, Dino said that his submission is not against Nigerians not taking the vaccine, though it is now a business venture and the federal government is not fair in importing the least effective vaccine for Nigerians.

“I bought kits for people in kogi state, I wear face mask too, so i believe in the existence of the virus,

“But what am saying is that it has been monetized people are making business out of it and I did not see the patriotic nature that is expected of the federal government in protecting our citizens.”

“If you have a drug that has least potency and leave the one that has higher potency, I think it is not a good one, it is not fair at all.”. He added.

UNICEF: $1 Billion More Needed For COVAX COVID-19 Vaccine Rollout

by Leading Reporters March 11, 2021
written by Leading Reporters

The UNICEF on Wednesday urged countries to contribute more money to help poor countries to access Coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccines, saying around $1 billion was needed.

UNICEF, the world’s single largest vaccine buyer, is part of the World Health Organisation-backed COVAX programme to supply COVID-19 shots to emerging economies.

“We have been asking the world for more funding for UNICEF and our distribution to countries we still need about $1 billion,” UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore said at Dubai’s World Government Summit.

That funding could be used to strengthen health systems in poorer nations and support the distribution of vaccines there, she said.

The COVAX initiative aims to deliver at least 2 billion COVID-19 vaccine doses this year, including 1.3 billion doses to lower-income countries.

Fore urged vaccine makers to sign licensing agreements so vaccines could be made locally, singling out Africa as one market that needed it.

She also said it was unlikely that the COVAX scheme would be able to cover the world in 2021.

“There is still more to do and we could do with more help and assistance,” Fore said.
[22:33, 10/03/2021] Kenny Hod New: Silence Of Rape Victims Helping Sexual Violence Boom In Nigeria – NHRC

The silence of victims of sexual assaults has been identified by the National Human Rights Commission, as one of the reasons Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) thrive across Nigeria.

NHRC’s Executive Secretary, Tony Ojuku Esq. who disclosed this at a meeting in Rivers State, said unless victims summon the courage to report such unsavory incidents to relevant authorities, those who engage in abominable behaviors like SGBV may not stop.

In a statement made available by NHRC’s Deputy Director Public Affairs, Fatimah Agwai Mohammed, on Wednesday, Ojukwu noted that the commission was currently handing 40 related cases in the state, adding it would ensure that justice was served.

However, he advised others who were in similar situation across the country not to remain silent but be rest assured that the Commission’s panel would give them a voice as well as change the narrative of allowing sexual assaults perpetuators go free.

“Sexual and gender-based violence is a human problem which even though affects both sexes weigh heavily against women and girls.

“SGBV has been booming in Nigeria because most victims do not come out to speak for fear of stigma and discrimination, coupled with the lack of remedy for victims,” he added.

Furthermore, Ojukwu urged traditional and religious leaders to come out hard on those engaged in SGBV as that would send a strong message to others.

“Traditional and religious leaders are frustrating our fight on SGBV because they use cultural and traditional practices to settle cases which in itself encourages perpetrators to commit more sexual violence,” he added.

The UN Initiative has a mandate to end all “forms of violence against women and girls by 2030” and it has about €500 million seed funding commitment aimed at helping it achieve its objective globally.
