Child trafficking: Auxano Foundation rehabilitates over 500 survivors in Nigeria

by Folarin Kehinde February 9, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

As part of efforts aimed at ensuring the well-being of victims of child trafficking, sexual and gender-based violence, (SGBV) a non-governmental organization, Auxano Foundation has rehabilitated over 500 survivors in Nigeria.

The organization underscore the need to assist the vulnerable from
dehumanizing and exploitative contradictions and usage while ensuring social justice in line with Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 3,4,5, and 6.

Convener Auxano Foundation, Lawrenta Igoh while speaking in Abuja at the Survivors Leadership Forum (SLF) and the Launch of the Survivors Book Club stated that the initiative was borne out of the need to help and active volunteerism from professional team members, emphasizing that government can not curb the scourge of SGBV and child trafficking alone, hence all hands must be on deck to nip this in the bud.

Igoh explained that one person can make a positive difference while encouraging others to get involved adding that more than just asking what the government can do, one can actually just decide what
can be done by contributing in helping to uplifting their community and neighborhood irrespective of challenges.

Meanwhile, Igoh stated that in 10 years, Auxano Foundation has given 10 communities access to potable drinking water in the rural parts of Nigeria and have offered several corporate social responsibility to underserved and therapeutic treatments to survivors of child trafficking.

“We have achieved quite a number of tasks in 10 years. For instance, what the most interesting success story I like to talk about is that we are able to give 10 communities access to clean
water in 10 years. And these communities are not communities in the city.

“They are located in very secluded and marginalized places. And this was achieved by contribution from people who choose to be anonymous, individuals within Nigeria. It helped me to feel like we as a country, we can solve most of our problems if we look inward.
And then volunteer members like our team, contributing time, expertise, money, resources to do things each and every day. Going to communities on Saturdays to conduct research.

“Meeting people, trying to understand them from their own realities. And coming back to advocate on their behalf has been one of those feats. So we’ve been doing
a lot of scholarship for children. In 10 years, we have 45 children in school and counting. And then under our team on health, at least over 500 survivors have received free medical and
therapeutic treatment. She stated.

Also speaking at the event, Program manager, Auxano Foundation, Ele-Ojo Ochai on her part stated that the Survivors Leaders Forum is a platform aimed at consolidating previous leadership project for survivors in the past while forming alliance whereby survivors can
interact, support, elevate each other, share stories, grow and heal together.

Ochai explained that the book club which started in 2024 was inspired by
Father William with inspiration which reasonates with the survivors.

“We saw it as an initiative to share more books with these children to facilitate their healing journey from past trauma. So it’s something I’ll be holding once in a quarter, once every quarter, we’ll have different books.

“We’ll be having it once every quarter for as long as possible. It’s just, you know, literature is a form of self-expression. And we believe it can also be used as a form of therapy for these children to heal, to express themselves.”

Meanwhile, Ochai attributed lack of fund as a major challenge hindering greater intervention for the foundation while calling on donor organization and well meaning Nigerians for support.

“The major challenge is funding.
Yes, because it’s actually, like I said, it’s a volunteer life. So the major challenge we have is funding, because like I say, we are all volunteers.

“So a lot of these projects, they are out of pocket or maybe just as organically. People here and there, they will know that we need to donate to such causes. And well, at times there’s a little
bit of bickering with the government, because like when we go to some of these villages to cooperate with the people, at times we have not really had so much of those. But you know, this issue of bottlenecks in communities, you have to meet chiefs and things like
that. But we have a way, but it’s still a little bit of a challenge.”

Coordinator of medical services of Auxano Foundation Dr. Opeyemi Muili disclosed that the foundation will focus on a health care and empowerment for at-risk and trafficked survivors (HEARTS) projects is aimed at addressing critical health needs of survivors through education and therapeutic treatments.

“We provide them with water, safe water, safe and potable and affordable water. So it has really been a lot. It has been eye-opening. We’ve been able to impact lives. We’ve gotten feedback from people, survivors that we didn’t even know had mental issues. We’ve been able to help them get over these issues.
And we’ve been able to also take care of their physical health.”

Meanwhile Muili also solicited for partnership and funding to expand their scope of humanitarian services.

“Right now we are looking for partners, sponsors and donors so that we can actually do more than this. Instead of just limiting what we are doing to victims,
like survival at shelters.

“There’s nothing stopping us from taking this across the country.
Nothing stopping us from looking at the vulnerable people, the vulnerable population. Which we’ve started doing in other communities, like Nasarawa, Kefi. We are going outside of even
the North Central.

“So by the end, you should expect us to expand. We are going to expand all our services. Physical services, mental services, and health services in general.”. She added.

Technological application, solution for real-time challenges – Coderina Edutech

by Folarin Kehinde January 28, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

A non-governmental organization, Coderina Edutech has stated that the application of technological tools such as STEM, robotics and a host of other Artificial intelligence (AI) tools will serve as solution to real-time challenges.

The Founder, Coderina, Olajide Ajayi while speaking in Abuja on Tuesday at the National Robotics Championships stated that the emergence of technology in the fourth industrial revolution is an enabler to solving real-time challenges especially for Nigerian youth.

Ajayi explained that challenges are everywhere but it takes only those who are able to convert those
challenges into opportunities that will thrive in the knowledge economy adding that sadly, Africa has missed out in the fourth revolution but assured that Coderina has created an enabler for students to face future challenges using technology.

“I think Africa missed out a bit during the initial four technology revolutions but this is now an opportunity for us again. Technology is an enabler, it
levels the playing field for everybody. It only takes you to know how to use it, if you know how
to use it, you can create with it and it takes those who create with it to change the world.

“So we’re creating an enablement not only for the
secondary school students or for the primary school students but also for the teachers as well
because you can’t teach what you don’t know so the overall plan is to start an ecosystem of young people who are creating with technology and solving real-life problems with technology.”

He noted that Coderina is poised at making Nigeria to be the first in Africa and second in the world to
designate robotics as a sporting event this move he said will ensure inclusivity for young people adding that technology has advanced to STEM education hence Nigeria must not be left behind.

“We want to make this very inclusive so that girls will see themselves in this, boys that are not inclined in
doing anything with technology will still find a role to play in all of this and still be able to learn
and master the use of technology effectively to change their lives.

“We want these young people is to be enabled to be given the right tools and resources to position them for the future of work and entrepreneurship.”. He stated.

Speaking earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Dr. Nasir Gwarzo highlighted the importance of the championship which he described as topnotch capable of projecting Nigerians to compete favorably anywhere in the world.

Gwarzo however noted that National Robotics Championships promotes advocacy, capacity building for both students and teachers and the spirit of competitive culture not against themselves but time to accomplish tasks which are multi-dimentional
adding that policies are readily available to support similar initiative.

“If this culture is imbibe fully, our expectation is that our students can compete favourably anywhere in the world, am impressed with what I have seen today and I look forward to seeing Nigerians top globally.

“Usually, government does not embark on an event until there’s a policy on ground, so we have a policy that aims at promoting this at all levels and that’s why I told you methodically that this is how activity evolve up to this stage so there is a policy”.

About 1000 secondary school students across the nation are currently participating in the national event.

“We need Justice” Parents of EndbadGovernace Protest Victims cries out

by Folarin Kehinde January 20, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Parents and relatives of the #Endbadgovernance protest that took place from 1-10 August 2024, has charged the federal government to investigate the numbers of casualties who were killed, injured and missing during and after the protest.

Ibrahim Yaha who spoke on behalf of the bereaved victims parent at a press briefing in Kano on Monday stated that the government has neglected investigating the killing by the police and swept justice under the carpet leaving them in pain.

“Each one of us has been in pain since August 2024 because our sons and daughters were killed by the police. We expected the government to acknowledge the atrocities committed by the police during the protest and to bring to justice all those suspected of responsibility for the killings and injuries.

“We all waited and waited but there seemed to be no any effort to investigate the police handling of the protest. We are dismayed that we did not receive condolences and not even a sympathy visit. Some of our sons and daughters were not even part of the protest, but they were killed because of excessive use of force and lethal attempts made by the police to suppress the protest. We are ready to provide all the information and evidence.”.

They however demanded that President Bola Tinubu should order a panel of inquiry in the killings that will constitute of experts as well as the parents of those killed.

Other demands include call for a public and impartial investigations into all the killings by the police during #Endbadgovernance protest, those suspected of being responsible for the killings must be held accountable and brought to justice and Justice for Victims’ Families.

“Pass property ownership law for women” Foundation charges lawmakers

by Folarin Kehinde December 8, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

A Non- Governmental Organizations, ACE charity has called for constitutional laws, such as Land Reform Act, to promote property ownership for women.

The Senior Monitoring and Evaluation Officer at ACE Charity, Vivian Ejike made this suggestion in an interview with pressmen at the round table discussion themed,”Transforming the Business Landscape For Rural Women through Inclusive Economic Development,” held in Abuja.

She explained that women face barriers such as inequality and limited access to resources, including land emphasizing that
cultural and religious settings often confine women to household duties, limiting their economic participation.

She discussed the role of government policies in promoting women’s economic participation.

According to her communities need to legislate property rights for women to ensure equal access to resources adding that representation of women in political positions is crucial to address women’s economic challenges effectively.

“The House of Representative have what it takes to pass some laws that can actually alter the fate of women in a positive way.For instance, land reforms. I don’t know if there’s a Land Reform Act, but that’s something that we can actually do, or the government can take up, to be able to create laws that promote the property ownership of women.

“ I think there are some laws that are against property ownership, and so we need the government to be able to set laws in place that women can hold, both at different levels. So we also need these communities where they are to be able to give property rights to women.

“So we need it to be legislated, passed into law that women can own lands, women can own properties, women can have equal access to resources to women. So we do believe that if it is something that the government can actually pass into law, then it will also help women to be able to benefit more in the economic participation.

“Also, I think it is necessary for women to be better represented in politics, not just for participation, but also representation, because sometimes the men can only partially give information about what women are going through but if there are women representing us at the helm of affairs, they can say for sure what the problem is when it comes to women accessing economic opportunities,”she said

Ejike while discussing the organisation economic program called “Women Microcredit Program” which was aimed at economically empowering rural women in Nigeria, explained that program provides interest-free loans to women entrepreneurs, with 75% of rural women and 80% of food producers being female.

According to her, ACE Charity addresses economic issues through digital training, financial management education, and formal banking access, leading to a high savings rate among participants.

She added that over 500 women have directly benefited, with 2,000 indirect beneficiaries, and the program aims to expand its reach.

Ejike stated that the program started in 2021 is to address the critical issue of access to finance for rural women.

“The core of the program is the women microcredit project, providing small, interest-free loans to rural women entrepreneurs. The program aims to engage various sectors, including policy makers, GBV survivors, and other women-focused programs to foster inclusive conversations,” she noted.

She added that government should ensure gender mainstreaming in in state budget.

Group calls for creation of YouthWASH Fund for innovations in sector

by Folarin Kehinde November 21, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

A Non – Governmental Organization, NGO, YouthWASH (Water Sanitation and Hygiene) initiative Africa has called on federal government to create a youth WASH Fund to provide funding for young people to explore their ideas and innovations in the sector.

The Executive Director of the group, Nature Obiakor made this calls in an interview with pressmen at the Digital hangout in celebrating 5 years of the Clean Nigeria;Use the Toilet campaign and to commemorate the World Toilet Day held in Abuja.

He encouraged the government to create spaces for young people in the sector, involving them from conceptualization to implementation.

He mentioned that there are already many policies on sanitation, hygiene, and water, but the challenge is in their interpretation and implementation.

According to him , young people and rural communities need to understand these policies better.

“if we want to talk about the federal government already has a lot of policies, too many policies on sanitation, policies on hygiene and policies on water. But the major challenge with these policies has been the interpretation of the policies. Some of these policies have not been well interpreted.

“So these policies have to be unbundled to make the young people, the rural people, understand what the policy is talking about, because some of these policies are on their shelves.

“Then secondly, again, we want to talk to government to also see how they can create a space for young people within the sector, because we see that, from my experience so far, that young people don’t really have space, even though it’s a claim that young people are being given space. But when it comes to the practical implementation, young people need to be carried along, from conceptualizing, to planning, up to implementation,” he stated.

Furthermore, Obiakor emphasized the need for young people to be involved in practical implementation, not just as beneficiaries.

He added that, the Programs should be designed to include young people and budget resources for their involvement.

He charged developmental partners to prioritize working with NGOs to allow for effective program implementation.

The NGO boss announced the unveiling of a new project, called Youth WASH Digital Media Hangouts.

He explained that the project is aims to engage young people using digital spaces for mobilization, monitoring, and evaluation.

According to him, it also aligns with Goal 6 of the Sustainable Development Goal to ensure no one is left behind, nothing, that the digital platform will help achieve the organization’s goals more effectively.

YouthWASH Initiative Africa is a youth organization focused on mobilizing and engaging young people in issues related to water, sanitation, and hygiene.

The organization aims to protect and uphold the human right to water, sanitation, and hygiene, and supports the government in implementing related initiatives. The primary focus is on involving young people in issues of sanitation, energy, and other developmental areas.
