Nigeria’s Military Strength Under PMB Government

by Leading Reporters March 4, 2022
written by Leading Reporters

Nigeria’s military is ranked the fourth in Africa and thirty-fifth in the world with respect to strength.

This is according to data from Global Firepower. According to the data, Nigeria has had constant military growth since the beginning of the Buhari administration.

According to the Global Firepower ranking, the lower the power index of a country, the higher the military capability of such a country. 0.000 is considered a perfect power index.

The country’s military strength index currently stands at 0.5745, which is a slight improvement compared to 2021 when the power index was 0.62.

The power index is determined by several factors which are grouped under 8 indicators. They include manpower, land system, airpower, naval power, resources, logistical, financial, and geographic.

In the last 7 years, Nigeria has maintained fourth and fifth position in Africa in terms of military strength out of the 54 countries. Egypt on the other hand has maintained the first position, making it the country with the strongest military strength in the period under review.

Other countries that rank high on the list are Algeria, Ethiopia, South Africa, Kenya, Libya, and Morocco.

Ranking of Military Strength of selected African Countries

Egypt ranks 12th globally in the 2022 ranking of military strength, while South Africa, Algeria, and Ethiopia, rank 26th, 31st, and 65th  respectively.

Nigeria’s Military Strength Power Index Under the Buhari Administration

Global Firepower data shows that in 2015, Nigeria’s power index stood at 1.526, the worst in the period under review. However, in 2016, it reduced by a great deal when 0.786 was recorded. 0.575 is the latest power index recorded for Nigeria.

Current data also reveals that Nigeria has a total military personnel of 215,000 out of which 135,000 are active and 80,000 make up the paramilitary.

So far under the Buhari Administration, the Nigerian Air force has acquired a total of 38 aircraft, the Nigerian navy acquired close to 400 new platforms since 2015 which includes 14 houseboats, 4 helicopters, 4 capital ships, 12 manta class/inshore patrol craft, and 22 fast attack boats among others.

The president also gave a directive to the Nigerian Navy to establish a naval base in Baga, Borno State, an area prone to criminal activities near the nation’s coast.

The President also mobilised international support for the fight against Boko Haram from countries like the United States of America, United Kingdom, France, Germany, ECOWAS, UN, and AU, which led to the United States agreeing to sell 12 Super Tucano aircrafts to Nigeria in 2017

Ex-Zamfara Governor, Yari, Flown To UK In Wheelchair

by Leading Reporters February 12, 2022
written by Leading Reporters
Yari was in a bad shape medically when he was brought to the airport ahead of the six-hour-long flight to the UK on a British Airways aircraft.

Abdul’aziz Yari, a former governor of Zamfara State, has been flown to the United Kingdom in a wheelchair, according to SaharaReporters.

Yari was in a bad shape medically when he was brought to the airport ahead of the six-hour-long flight to the UK on a British Airways aircraft.

“Yari is flying to UK on British Airways flight for a medical trip. He was even brought in a wheelchair,” a source at the airport confirmed to SaharaReporters on Saturday morning.

The 54-year-old politician was governor of Zamfara State from May 2011 to May 2019.

In April 2021, Yari was detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over alleged illegal financial dealings and misappropriation of funds.

Before then in February of that year, he was also grilled by EFCC operatives in Lagos after which the Federal High Court in Abuja ordered the final forfeiture of funds belonging to him domiciled in Zenith and Polaris banks.

Among alleged financial infractions against Yari include the sum of $56,056.75 reportedly lodged in his account with Polaris Bank; N12.9m, N11.2m, $303m, N217,388.04 and $311.8m said to be kept in different Zenith Bank accounts in his name and companies.

Bye to Covid! All restrictions in England to be scrapped by 26th January

by Leading Reporters January 18, 2022
written by Leading Reporters

The news comes as Boris Johnson continues to fight for his political life as fury rages over lockdown parties in Downing Street and a member of his own cabinet demands an end to the drinking culture in his Government.

The end of restrictions means mandatory mask wearing at schools, on public transport and at indoor events, controversial covid passports, and demands that people work from home will finish on January 26.

All that will remain will be a requirement to isolate for five days with a positive covid test and the need to take lateral flow tests for international travel.

Health Secretary Sajid Javid was last night said to be “sure” that the restrictions will not be needed after the January deadline.

The Sunday Express learnt that the Prime Minister had already been handed an ultimatum before Christmas by senior Conservative backbenchers that he would face a leadership vote of confidence if he tried to bring in more restrictions.

The threat came after 101 Conservative MPs opposed the current restrictions in a Commons rebellion on December 14.

Conservative MPs have made it clear to Mr. Johnson that restrictions needed to end as soon as possible.

In recent days amid the revelations about parties, some have stressed that Mr Johnson’s resistance to scientists pushing for greater restrictions and “getting the policy right” was what prevented them from submitting a letter to 1922 Committee chairman Sir Graham Brady calling for a vote of confidence in his leadership.

But even close allies of the Prime Minister last night warned Mr Johnson that there needed to be a change of culture.

Writing for the Sunday Express, Leader of the House Jacob Rees-Mogg urged people to stand by the Prime Minister for delivering on Brexit and getting the country through the pandemic.

But he added: “It is clear that there is a drinking culture in Downing Street that would be questionable in ordinary time let alone during a period of restriction.”

Meanwhile, former Conservative minister Tobias Ellwood said the Prime Minister must “lead or step aside”, saying: “We need leadership.”

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said: “We’ve got a Prime Minister who is absent – he is literally in hiding at the moment and unable to lead, so that’s why I’ve concluded that he has got to go.

“And of course there is a party vantage in him going, but actually it is now in the national interest that he goes, so it is very important now that the Tory party does what it needs to do and gets rid of him.”

Health Secretary Sajid Javid is expected to formally announce in the coming days that he will not renew the restrictions when their sunset clause ends on January 26.

A source said he “feels confident about the decision” because of the falling number of cases and evidence that Omicron is not as dangerous as other variants.

The source added: “Sajid [Javid] is sure now that the restrictions will not go beyond the sunset clause date.”

The Health Secretary had already reduced isolation times for positive tests down to five days from 10.

It is understood that Downing Street had wanted to make an official announcement this weekend but high figures in the North West which is behind London in seeing cases fall meant that they felt it was too early.

Professor Robert Dingwall, a former pandemic government advisor and expert in social science at Nottingham Trent University, said of the propsed lifting of the rules: “This would be very welcome news.

“However, the experience of ‘Freedom Day’ last summer means we should wait to see the small print. Does this mean an end to lateral flow tests for asymptomatic people or for access to community events?

“Will the Department for Education remove all interventions in schools? Will there be a positive campaign to reverse two years of stimulating fear and anxiety?”

Leading scientists said they were more “optimistic” about the trajectory of coronavirus cases as a Government health advisor said cases appeared to be “plateauing” in the south of England.

Dr Susan Hopkins, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) chief medical adviser, said London, the South East and East of England were seeing the number of infections flatten, cases rising much slower in the north and there was a slowdown in hospital admissions.

She told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme cases were still relatively high, with one in 15 people in England infected and one in 20 elsewhere in the UK.

She said: “We see that infections are plateauing in the community, which is good, in London and the south east and the east of England.

“There are still risings, but much slower in the northern parts of the country.”

She added hospitals had been able to discharge patients “faster” due to Omicron being milder than previous coronavirus variants but that, with around 15,500 people in hospital last week, the NHS remains under “a lot of pressure”, with some trusts “unable to do much of their elective care”, a situation exacerbated by staff absences.

Her comments came as other experts said they were hopeful about the coronavirus situation, while the Welsh Government began to ease restrictions.

There were 81,713 cases and 287 deaths recorded on Saturday, compared to 146,390 cases and 313 deaths last week.

Consultant virologist and Cambridge University lecturer Dr Chris Smith said current coronavirus data gives him “great cause for optimism”.

He explained there could still be an uptick Omicron or “it may be that we are following the trajectory of South Africa, which we seem to be so far, which is they saw a much fewer translation of hospital cases into intensive care beds cases.

“So let’s hope that carries on.

“This gives me great cause for optimism because I think we are getting to a point now where thanks to vaccination, where 96 percent of the country we’re told now have antibodies against the coronavirus, thanks to vaccinations thanks to infection rate reinforcing our immunity we are getting to a point where the population have sufficient immunity that we can fend off the infection when we get it much better than we could previously.

“So we don’t see that strong connection of cases turning into consequences.”

Chief social policy adviser to the Scottish government Professor Linda Bauld added Omicron cases appear to be “stabilising”.

BREAKING: Nigeria Shuts UK Mission As Diplomats Test COVID-19 Positive

by Leading Reporters August 17, 2021
written by Leading Reporters

Reports reaching LeadingReporters that the Nigerian High Commission in London in the United Kingdom has been shut after officials tested positive for COVID-19.

Sources within the commission confirmed the letter informing of the closure, which will last 10 days beginning from Thursday, when the strains of the deadly disease were detected in the Diplomats.

Their infection with COVID-19 came to light when the Nigerian officials visited the UK Home office for a meeting and upon being subjected to mandatory tests at the entrance, they were found to be afflicted.

However, the High Commission did not name the concerned officials nor their ranks.

In the 12th August 2021 memo, titled, “Closure of Nigeria High Commission, London,” the country’s High Commission to UK detailed circumstances leading to the move.

It said: “This afternoon, the Head of Immigration Section and two other officials went for a meeting at the Home Office.

“At the entrance, COVID test was administered on them and one of them tested positive to COVID-19. The affected officer immediately isolated while the other officials, who tested negative, will also isolate for the next 10 days.

“In response to this challenge, the Mission embarked on testing all officials of the mission, after which another official of the Mission tested positive.

In line with COVID-19 regulation and the need to adhere to the rules and regulations of the host country, the Mission will close down for the next 10 days, in order to observe the mandatory isolation of those who were in contact with the affected officials.

“While the High Commission regrets any inconvenience that this may have caused, we solicit the cooperation of the general public.”

No note to the Senate as Buhari plans extension of his medical stay in UK

by Leading Reporters April 13, 2021
written by Leading Reporters

The Presidency is planning to extend the stay of President Muhamadu Buhari who has been in the United Kingdom since March 30 on a routine medical check-up, as protests continue at the Nigerian Mission House in London.

SaharaReporters learnt that although Buhari failed to hand over to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, the Vice President has been told to keep himself in acting capacity, as the extension is being worked out.

While not giving a particular date, Buhari’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, had said that the President would be back in the second week of April 2021.

Buhari had spent over 193 days on medical leave in the United Kingdom since he assumed office in 2015.

The president’s trips have attracted a lot of backlash on social media as the announcement of his ongoing trip came around the time the National Association of Resident Doctors announced that its members would be going on strike over government’s failure to meet its demands, including non-payment of allowances.

As at the April 1 had examined a timeline of the president’s trips abroad for medical treatment since he assumed office on May 29, 2015.

  1. February 5, 2016 to February 10, 2016: Buhari took a six-day vacation in the United Kingdom, saying that his doctors lived in England.
  2. June 6 to June 19, 2016: Buhari spent nearly two weeks in Britain where he had treatment for an ear infection and a holiday.

He reportedly flew to London on June 6 to see an ear, nose and throat specialist after two doctors in Nigeria recommended further evaluation “as a precaution,” his team said.

He extended his trip by three days to rest.

  1. January 19 to March 10, 2017: Buhari went to London again on a medical vacation on January 19. He wrote the National Assembly on February 5 seeking extension of his London medical leave. The president didn’t return until March 10 but didn’t resume work immediately at Aso Villa. The Presidency said “he’s working from home.” Buhari spent a total of 51 days outside the country.
  2. May 7, 2017: Buhari embarked on a trip to London for another medical vacation. He returned after 104 days on August 19 but could not resume work because rats had reportedly damaged furniture in his office.

The Presidency announced he would be working from home.

  1. May 8, 2018: Buhari went to London for a four-day “medical review.” The president returned on May 11, 2018.
  2. April 25 to May 5, 2019: The president again embarked on a 10-day private visit to the United Kingdom.
  3. March 30: The president embarked on another trip for a routine medical check-up in London.

For the current trip, he has already spent ten days away, with a few more days to go.

In 2019, the president embarked on a 10-day private trip to the UK suspected to be for medical reasons.

In 2020, the president could not make his trip due to the coronavirus pandemic which caused a halt in flight operations.
