Soldier shot Police DPO dead at military checkpoint

by Folarin Kehinde August 29, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Halliru Liman, Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Wasagu Division of the police in Kebbi state, has been confirmed dead.

According to Yazid Abubakar, spokesman of the Zamfara State Police Command, Liman died after being “shot dead by a soldier” at a checkpoint in the state.

Abubakar said the deceased police officer was on his way to Birnin Kebbi in Kebbi State to attend a meeting when he was stopped on the way at Danmarke area in Bukkuyum LGA of Zamfara by military personnel attached to Operation Dadarin Daji.

He said the officer was murdered on the spot by the military personnel, despite identifying himself as a police officer.

In a statement on Thursday, the command’s spokesperson demanded a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident so as to ensure those responsible are brought to book.

“On August 28, 2024, at approximately 1030 hours, SP Liman was brutally murdered by military personnel led by one Hassan, attached to OPHD Sector 6, Dan Marke area of Bukkuyum, Zamfara State,” the statement said.

“The circumstances surrounding this heinous crime are alarming and unacceptable.

“SP Liman, who was on his way to attend a monthly conference in Birnin Kebbi, was stopped by military personnel despite identifying himself as a police officer.

“In a shocking display of aggression, Hassan pointed his gun at SP Liman and shot him in the head, resulting in his instant death. We condemn this unprovoked attack in the strongest possible terms and demand a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident.

“The military’s actions are a clear violation of the rules of engagement and the principles of inter-agency cooperation. We urge the relevant authorities to take immediate action to address this egregious incident and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.

“The police and military must work together to maintain peace and security, not engage in violent confrontations that undermine public trust. We extend our deepest condolences to the family and colleagues of SP Halliru Liman and assure them that we will do everything in our power to ensure justice is served.”

Soldier watching banex plaza slaps lady into coma in Abuja

by Folarin Kehinde May 21, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

One of the military personnel keeping watch at the popular Banex plaza in the Wuse 2 area of Abuja, has slapped a lady into coma.

Daily Trust reports that the plaza has remained under lock and key four days after thugs beat up some soldiers who had a disagreement with a trader.

Our correspondent had gone to the area to monitor update when soldiers accosted the lady who crossed a barricade at the plaza.

The lady was trekking on the barricaded road when she was stopped by soldiers.

After asking her some questions, one of them slapped her heavily and she collapsed.

Daily Trust correspondent at the scene witnessed how she was rushed into a van which sped off the scene.

It is unclear if she was being taken to the hospital for medical attention.

Meanwhile, traders have been counting their losses over the military action, which they said could have been resolved without the lockdown.

Our correspondent who visited the market on Tuesday afternoon found soldiers across the plaza.

Lamenting the situation, Chibuzor Ike, a phone repairer at the plaza, i said: “I am already counting losses. It doesn’t seem like they will leave anytime soon. We are pleading for the reopening of the place for business.”

Trouble started when thugs beat up some soldiers who had a disagreement with a trader in the plaza.

The trader had reportedly sold a bad phone to someone who invited soldiers. Rather than resolve the issue amicably, the trader reportedly invited thugs who assaulted the uniform men.

They descended on at least two soldiers and another man in mufti. The thugs who broke into groups slapped, kicked and beat up the soldiers.

Although the police stepped in to resolve the situation, soldiers later stormed the plaza, forcing traders to shut down immediately.

Some videos on social media showed soldiers chasing a crowd of people and punishing a few others.

The army has been silent on the action at the plaza as Onyema Nwachukwu has not made an official comment as of the time of filing this report.
