JUST IN: New Lagos Speaker Visits Governor Sanwo-Olu

by Folarin Kehinde January 14, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The newly sworn-in Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, has paid a visit to the residence of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Leading reporters reports that the leader of the state legislature also had a meeting with members of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), a powerful group that wields considerable influence in Lagos State’s politics.

According to Meranda, who spoke briefly to the press after the meeting, the purpose of the visit was to seek the blessings of the GAC leaders and to brief them on the events that transpired at the House of Assembly on Monday.

“We are here to brief them about what happened at the House of Assembly yesterday, to seek their blessings, and which we have gotten,” Meranda said.

The meeting, which lasted for several hours, was still ongoing, with members of the GAC continuing their discussions at the Lagos House.

Meanwhile, Governor Sanwo-Olu has denied any involvement in the impeachment of the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa. Through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Gboyega Akosile, Sanwo-Olu refuted claims suggesting his role in Obasa’s removal, labelling it a purely legislative matter.

“There is absolutely no truth to the rumour that the governor influenced the impeachment. It was strictly a decision made by the lawmakers,” Akosile told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday. He added that Governor Sanwo-Olu is focused on addressing the needs of over 20 million Lagosians and that the events that transpired in the Assembly were entirely within the prerogative of the legislators.

Obasa, who represented Agege 1 Constituency and served as Speaker since 2015, was removed during an emergency plenary session on Monday.

“I am not involved in Obasa’s impeachment” Gov Sanwo-olu

written by Folarin Kehinde

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has denied any involvement in the impeachment of the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa.

Speaking through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Gboyega Akosile, Sanwo-Olu refuted claims suggesting his role in Obasa’s removal, labelling it a purely legislative matter.

“There is absolutely no truth to the rumour that the governor influenced the impeachment. It was strictly a decision made by the lawmakers,” Akosile told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday.

He added, “Governor Sanwo-Olu is focused on addressing the needs of over 20 million Lagosians. What transpired in the Assembly was entirely within the prerogative of the legislators. Like everyone else, the governor witnessed the proceedings through the media.”

Obasa, who represented Agege 1 Constituency and served as Speaker since 2015, was removed during an emergency plenary session on Monday. Thirty-two out of the 40 members voted him out, citing alleged gross misconduct.

Deputy Speaker Mrs. Mojisola Meranda (APC-Apapa 1) was immediately sworn in as the new Speaker, with Mr. Fatai Adebola (APC-Ibeju Lekki 1) elected as Deputy Speaker.

The Assembly also suspended its Clerk, Mr. Olalekan Onafeko, indefinitely and dissolved all principal positions and standing committees.

“Lagos Will Lose” – Governor Sanwo-Olu Speaks on Tinubu’s Tax Reform Bills

by Folarin Kehinde December 5, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has backed the federal government-led tax reform, describing the state’s position as “extremely comfortable.”

The governor made this known during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sidelines of the Africa Investment Forum, Market Days 2024, in Rabat, Morocco.

Sanwo-Olu advised people to take time to read the provisions of the reform and fully understand what it aims to achieve. The governor debunked claims that Lagos would be the major beneficiary of the reform, stating that the state would actually lose in some areas but would have a bigger opportunity to play a more significant role.

The governor expressed his positive attitude towards the reform, describing it as “wonderful.” He noted that Nigeria’s tax-to-GDP ratio is one of the lowest in the world, emphasizing the need for change. Sanwo-Olu assured that the intention of the reform is not to hurt anyone but to better the lot of all Nigerians.

“What those uncomfortable with the tax reform are not willing to accept is that there is no way of making an omelette without breaking the egg.

“You cannot make changes if the reforms are not set in. I have advised that people should take time to read the provisions of the reform very well and to fully understand what they’re trying to do.

“I’ve seen comments around. Comments like Lagos is going to be the major beneficiary. It is not true. Lagos is actually going to be shaped off in some places, but on a larger scale basis, we see it as a global thing for a better governance structure.

“All of us will play better, and we’ll be able to discipline ourselves more. One of the things that you will see is that you need to work harder for you to get the full benefit of the reform. So it’s not just an easy kill,” he said.

The governor added that if the changes were not made, greater opportunities were inherent in the states of the federation as well as non-governmental actors.

According to him, Lagos State, indeed, will lose here and there, but will also have a bigger opportunity to have a bigger role to play.

“I have a positive attitude to it. I see it as a very wonderful reform.

“Tax-to-GDP ratio in Nigeria is one of the lowest in the world.

“So, there are a few things that need to happen, and like I keep saying, not only when you make those changes, you will not be able to see the opportunities that are found in your account.

“We really need to be bullish. We need to be encouraging ourselves and know that the intention is not to hurt anybody. This, I am very sure of.

“The intention is to better a lot, but not just better a lot of one person or one set of people. It’s for all of us, and so we should look at it this way,” he said.

The tax reform bills proposed by President Bola Tinubu have led to significant controversy, with some governors and traditional rulers of Northern Nigerian states rejecting the bill, citing that it does not align with the interests of the North and other sub-national entities.

Some of the key provisions of the bill include an increment in Value Added Tax (VAT) from 7.5 percent to 10 percent by 2025, a 27.5 percent company tax rate, a 4 percent development levy on companies, and a 5 percent excise tax on lottery and gaming income.

2027: Seyi Tinubu, senator, deputy gov emerge as frontrunners to succeed Sanwo-Olu

by Folarin Kehinde October 27, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

As the race for Lagos State’s governorship in 2027 intensifies, three key figures have emerged as frontrunners to succeed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Senator Tokunbo Abiru, Deputy Governor Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, and businessman Seyi Tinubu are all vying for the coveted position, according to a ThisDay report.

Senator Abiru is known for his financial expertise, having transitioned from banking to politics seamlessly.

His background and strategic engagement with Lagos business leaders have drawn attention, as he positions himself as a technocrat with the vision to propel Lagos forward.

Abiru’s connections within the financial sector are a major asset, making him a popular choice among elites who see him as a figure capable of handling Lagos’s complex economy.

Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, the current Deputy Governor, has built his career on loyalty and a solid connection to grassroots communities across the state.

Hamzat has gained trust among Lagosians through his hands-on approach and frequent town hall meetings, often touted as “coronation rehearsals” by political insiders.

With years of experience in governance and a reputation for unwavering commitment to his role, Hamzat has cultivated significant support from within the political establishment.

Seyi Tinubu, son of former Lagos governor and current president, Bola Tinubu, has also made surprising strides.

Through philanthropic initiatives and “rice diplomacy”—distributing bags of rice to communities—Seyi has begun establishing his presence in neighbourhoods and markets across the state.

While his entry has raised some eyebrows, he represents a continuation of the Tinubu legacy, a factor that carries weight in Lagos politics.

“We didn’t increase minimum wage to 70,000” Sanwo-Olu clarifies widespread rumor

by Folarin Kehinde April 26, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has denied claims that he announced a new minimum wage of N70,000 for workers.

Sanwolu-Olu made the clarification while reacting to widely circulated video and news reports on the matter.

According to the clarification given by the commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, in a statement on Thursday, the governor was erroneously quoted.

“The Lagos State Government has not increased the minimum wage, contrary to the impression in some media reports, which emanated from the unveiling of Eko Cares – the umbrella for the various interventions to protect the poor against the effects of the prevailing economic hardship,” he said.

“Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has been erroneously quoted as saying that a new minimum wage of N70,000 had been announced. This is wrong. Mr. Governor never said so. He said since January, civil servants had been earning the N35,000 wage award directed by the Federal Government.

“In other words, those earning N35,000 now earn N70,000. He did not announce a new minimum wage of N70,000.

Omotoso quoted the governor to have said, “I know that by the grace of God very very soon we’ll see a new minimum wage that will be approved for the Federal Government and for the state government.

“The civil servants and all public officers, they know that since January we have continued to pay the wage allowance of minimum of N35,000 over and above what they were earning before.

“People that were earning a minimum of N35,000 to N40,000 before, they are now earning over N70,000. So, it’s important for people to know and for us to lay this thing very clearly. This government has doubled up and has not left its citizens on their own.”

“I Got N2m, Not N2bn For Rechargeable Fans”, Sanwo-Olu’s Deputy Breaks Silence

by Folarin Kehinde November 21, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

Lagos State Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, has faulted the claim by the Public Procurement Agency that his office got N2 billion to purchase rechargeable fans, rechargeable lights and fridges.

Hamzat in a memo addressed to the Director General of the procurement agency, said the approval for the project was N2m.

He also claimed that his wife got N2.5m each for her monthly outreach to indigents and empowerment programme as against the N30m captured by the agency.

Daily Trust reports that the state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and his deputy, Hamzat, have come under criticism for approving N7.5 million to replace liquid fragrance in Sanwo-Olu’s office and N2bn to purchase rechargeable fans for the office of Hamzat.

However, Hamzat in a memo signed by Director, Finance and Account, Tola Ekemode on behalf the Permanent Secretary in the office of the deputy governor, said the report by the agency was untrue, mischievous, fake and unfounded.

“It is important to state that truly, the office did get approval and awarded the provision of supply items (rechargeable fans, rechargeable lights and fridges) for the sum of =N=2,017,840 (Two Million, Seventeen Thousand, Eight Hundred and Forty Naira) as against the =N=2,017,840,000 (Two Billion, Seventeen Million, Eight Hundred and Forty Thousand Naira as reported by Doherty in his purported letter

“In addition, the report that the office through the Wife of the Deputy Governor spent =N=30,000,000 monthly for outreach to indigents is inaccurate as the amount stated covered the whole year. It is =N=2,500,000 per month. Same for the Empowerment programme by the Wife of the Deputy Governor which also =N=2,500,000 per month as against =N=30,000,000 monthly reported,” read the memo.

He called on the agency to take immediate action to take prompt action in addressing the issue by giving the general public a true account of what was approved.

“The Office of the Deputy Governor wishes to state in unequivocal terms, for your immediate action and the attention of millions of readers that the report is untrue, mischievous, fake and unfounded.

“We are compelled to write this letter due to the inaccuracies it conveyed; as the story was completely different and not a true reflection of what we have in our records. Also, we would not allow some individual(s) and journalists with mischievous inclination to bring the personality and name of the Deputy Governor, his wife and the office to disrepute,” he said.
