BREAKING: Resign Within 48 Hours Or Be Impeached – Rivers Governor Fubara Given Fresh Ultimatum

by Folarin Kehinde March 10, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Chief Tony Okocha, has issued a fresh ultimatum to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, demanding his resignation within 48 hours or face impeachment.

Okocha made the declaration on Monday while addressing journalists at his private residence in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

He accused Governor Fubara of disrespecting President Bola Tinubu, particularly in his handling of the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State. According to him, the governor failed to honour the peace initiatives led by the president, prompting the APC to take a firm stance.

“As a political party, we are today advising the governor; there are two options, resign honourably or be impeached. That is the position of the All Progressives Congress,” Okocha said.

He further stated, “He has disrespected Mr. President, and we told him that we cannot be here and have him disrespect Mr. President. The offences are there; the Supreme Court has agreed and even provided us with more evidence. The House of Assembly does not need to set up any committee again to investigate him.”

Okocha emphasized that the APC would not tolerate any defiance from the governor, insisting that he should step down immediately.

“48 hours is too much to give him as an ultimatum. He should just resign honourably,” he added.

This latest ultimatum comes just days after the Rivers State House of Assembly gave Governor Fubara a 48-hour deadline to present the 2025 budget.

BREAKING: Supreme Court sacks all Rivers Local Government Chairmen loyal to Fubara

by Folarin Kehinde February 28, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Supreme Court has invalidated the local government elections conducted by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) on October 5, 2024, citing significant breaches of the Electoral Act.

Delivering the judgment, Justice Jamilu Tukur ruled that the election was null and void due to a lack of substantial compliance with electoral laws and guidelines. According to the court, RSIEC failed to adhere to proper procedures, particularly by continuing voter registration after officially announcing the election date.

Justice Tukur emphasized that the electoral commission’s actions violated Section 150 of the Electoral Act, which outlines the necessary procedures for conducting local government elections.

The court further noted that the hurried process leading up to the election compromised its credibility, rendering the entire exercise unlawful.

BREAKING: Fubara Backs Down, Withdraws Appeal on 2024 Rivers Budget Ruling

by Folarin Kehinde February 10, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Rivers State Governor Siminalaya Fubara has withdrawn his appeal against the Appeal Court ruling that declared the 2024 budget illegal.

The withdrawal of the suit was made by Fubara’s counsel, Yusuf Ali. In addition to dismissing the appeal, Justice Uwani Abba-Aji of the Supreme Court ordered Fubara to pay a cost of two million naira to the Rivers State House of Assembly and Martin Amaewhule.

The development was also disclosed by Lere Olayinka, Media Aide to the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on Monday.

Recall that Governor Fubara had submitted the 2024 budget to the Edison Ehie-led House of Assembly in December 2023. However, the Appeal Court in Abuja delivered a ruling on October 10, 2024, upholding the Federal High Court’s January 22, 2024, judgment that nullified the passage of the Rivers State 2024 budget.

The controversy surrounding the budget began when pro-Wike lawmakers, led by Martins Amaewhule, took the state government to court for submitting the budget to the Ehie-led house, arguing that it was not properly passed.

Wike is currently at odds with his estranged political godson, Fubara, allegedly over the control of political structures in the state.

In a social media statement on Monday morning, Olayinka revealed that Governor Fubara has admitted to illegality by withdrawing his appeal.

He wrote, “Governor Fubara of Rivers State has withdrawn his appeal No. SC/CV/1071/2024 against the Appeal Court judgment declaring the 2024 Budget of the State illegal and ordering him to present the budget to the House of Assembly led by Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule.

“The Appeal Court had upheld the judgment of Justice J. K. Omotosho in Suit No:FHC/ABJ/1613/2023 wherein the court ruled that Governor Fubara should re-present the 2024 budget to the House of Assembly led by Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule.

“By this withdrawal, Gov. Fubara has accepted the lower and appellate courts judgments, declaring presentation of the Rivers State budget to three members of the State House of Assembly as illegal.”

The governor’s camp is yet to comment on the development.

BREAKING: FCT Minister Wike Reportedly Dissolves Appeal Court Panel Over Rivers LG Election Ruling

by Folarin Kehinde November 24, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Nyesom Wike, has reportedly ordered the secret dissolution of the Special Court of Appeal in the FCT that gave a favourable ruling on the Rivers State Local Government Elections.

The panel was “quietly disbanded” after it upheld the Rivers State Local Government elections conducted by the administration of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The controversy surrounding the Rivers State Local Government Elections has been ongoing, with the Court of Appeal in Abuja nullifying a judgement of the Federal High Court that barred the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from releasing the voters register to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) for the conduct of local elections in the state.

The appellate court panel, led by Onyekachi Otisi, had held that the lower court lacked jurisdiction to entertain the suit, citing Section 28 of the Electoral Act, which does not accommodate elections conducted by state governments.

The court had held that “The Electoral Act does not apply to local government elections and the lower court lacks jurisdiction to entertain the appeal.”

According to sources, Mr. Wike is not happy with the development.

The FCT minister has reportedly reached out to Senior Judicial officers and fixers, secretly disbanding the first panel that gave the favourable ruling.

The new panel approved by Wike is litigating on the matter from Abuja, where Wike’s wife is also a senior judge. Wike is also enraged over the decision of the accountant general to pay Rivers allocation based on what he claimed was a mere “stay of execution.”

“The panel that sat to hear the new appeal was headed by Justice Hamah Barka and it also has Justice Adebukola Banjoko and Justice Peter C. Obiora. Wike got upset and reached out to Senior Judicial officers and fixers. He secretly disbanded the first panel that gave the favourable ruling,” SaharaReporters quoted a source as saying.

“Ironically, Justice Barka had recused himself from the Rivers State issue in the panel earlier set for the same purpose, saying he was under attack by some forces claiming he was compromised,” the source further revealed.

“The new panel approved by Wike is litigating on the matter from Abuja Where Wike’s wife is also a senior judge,” the source added.

“Wike is also enraged over the decision of the accountant general to pay Rivers allocation based on what he claimed was a mere “stay of execution.”

The federal government had initially said it would halt the October monthly Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) revenue payment to Rivers State, citing a court order as the reason. However, the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF) later cited a subsisting appeal, saying that the allocation could not be stopped.

Rivers APC makes shocking revelation on Nyesom Wike’s Health

by Folarin Kehinde November 16, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

There is nothing wrong with Nyesom Wike, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory, the chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State, Tony Okocha has said.

Okocha made the disclosure following reports on social media that Wike is sick.

Many Nigerians took to social media especially X to point out that Wike looks frail and has lost so much weight. They claimed that the minister’s appearance might be due to some form of ailment.

Others also pointed out that Wike, 56, is looking very much older than his age.

However, in his reaction, the APC Rivers chairman said the former governor is not sick but only watching his weight.

Okocha, a loyalist to Wike described the reports as untrue and unfounded.

He said, “The stories being peddled about his state of health are not true. How is he sick? Has anybody seen him falling or slump?

“The man is not sick. He is very agile and does what he was appointed to do. Do you even know if he is watching his weight?” Okocha queried.

A devastating helicopter crash in Rivers State has left eight people, including six oil workers and two crew members, feared dead.

The helicopter, owned by Eastwind Aviation, crashed into the Atlantic Ocean on Tuesday morning while transporting the victims to the OML 123 oil field.

The incident occurred around 11:40 a.m., as the helicopter was en route to the Mimbo platform and the Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel.

At the time of reporting, authorities had yet to confirm the total number of fatalities, but fears are mounting that all eight individuals onboard may have perished.

This tragic incident highlights ongoing safety concerns regarding helicopter operations in Nigeria’s offshore oil fields.

The crash adds to a growing list of aviation accidents in the region, prompting authorities to call for stricter safety measures.

Court rejects Governor Fubara’s 2024 Budget

by Folarin Kehinde October 11, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Court of Appeal has dismissed an appeal brought before it by Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara seeking to remove 27 members of the State House of Assembly on account of their defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Abuja Division of the court said Governor Fubara has no basis to bring out the appeal having withdrawn his opposition to the case of the pro-Wike lawmakers at the Federal High Court.

Justice Olubunmi Oyewole, who delivered the lead judgment held that the governor, having withdrawn from the case cannot claim to be aggrieved with the judgment of the federal high court.

Consequently, the Court of Appeal barred Fubara from intervening with affairs of the House of Assembly.

The appellate court also barred him from withholding the House of Assembly fund and removing the Clerk and Deputy Clerk from the House.

Similarly, the Court of Appeal ordered him to re-present the budget of the State to the House under the recognised Speaker as contained in the judgment of Justice James Omotosho of the federal high court.

Justice Oyewole said that the blunder of Fubara in withdrawing from the suit in the federal high court cannot be redeemed by any known advocacy.

Justice Oyewole also held that the appeal of the governor has no utilitarian value as it cannot confer any advantage on him having lost his legal rights by admitting all issues raised against him with his voluntary withdrawal from the suit.

By coming to the court, Justice Oyewole said that Fubara was approbating and reprobating and blowing hot and cold at the same time, adding that such conduct had no basis in law as parties must be consistent in their approach to court matters.

He therefore voided and set aside the passage of the 2024 budget by 4 out of 32 members on the ground of illegality that must not be allowed in a democratic setting.

The court also held that Fubara engaged in executive recklessness that are unknown to law by presenting budget to only 4 members and signing same to law under 24 hours.

JUST IN: Newly elected councillor’s father killed in Rivers state election-related violence

by Folarin Kehinde October 8, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The father of Ndiika Benson, one of the newly constituted councillors in Rivers State, representing Ward 4 in Khana Legislative Council, has tragically lost his life amid the violent crisis that erupted in the state on Monday.

The victim, Mr Benson Ndoone, a security officer at Kenule Beeson Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic in Bori, Khana Local Government Area, was reportedly killed by suspected opposition political thugs.

The thugs were protesting the outcome of the local council elections and stormed the Rector’s Lodge of the polytechnic, where the swearing-in of newly elected councillors was taking place.

The Rector’s Lodge also serves as the secretariat of the recently disbanded Caretaker Committee, previously led by Marvin Yobana.

In their bid to disrupt the proceedings, the thugs reportedly attacked the facility, leading to Ndoone’s death.

The killing of Mr. Ndoone has shocked the community and added a grave note to the already tense atmosphere in Rivers State, which has been marred by post-election violence following the local council polls.

The election had sparked violent protests in several areas, with political thugs reportedly targeting council officials and their supporters.
