Emergency rule: Reps got $5,000 as ‘Sallah gesture,’ not bribe – Betara

by Folarin Kehinde March 24, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on FCT, Mukhtar Aliyu Betara, has clarified that he shared $5,000 with members of his committee as a “Sallah gesture” and not as an inducement to support emergency rule in Rivers State.

A Nigerian investigative journalist, Jaafar Jaafar, disclosed this in a post on his X handle.

Jaafar said Betara explained this to him after the lawmaker reached out to clarify that the $5,000 given to lawmakers was merely a “Sallah gesture” and not an inducement.

According to the investigative journalist, Betara said it was part of a long-standing tradition and had nothing to do with the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State.

Jaafar wrote:

“The chairman of the House Committee on FCT, Mukhtar Aliyu Betara, has clarified to me that he only shared $5,000 with each member of his committee as a ‘Sallah gesture,’ not as an inducement to support emergency rule in Rivers State.

According to him, he maintains the tradition—like Santa Claus—every year.

“As we say in Hausa, not thigh but hind leg.”

However, several reports claimed that senators received a $15,000 bribe to endorse the proclamation of a state of emergency in Rivers State.

The rumors alleged that the senators received $5,000 on Tuesday and then $10,000 on Wednesday, the day before they voted on the proclamation.

Rivers: Reps in heated argument before plenary

by Folarin Kehinde March 19, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Some members of the House of Representatives engaged in a heated argument over the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.

The incident reportedly occurred during its plenary session on Wednesday.

DAILY POST sighted a video of the incident shared online by AIT News on Wednesday.

Recall that President Bola Tinubu, on Tuesday night, declared a state of emergency in Rivers State.

The President made the pronouncement in a nationwide broadcast.

However, the Constitution requires the National Assembly to consider the President’s gazetted proclamation within 48 hours if it is in session and within 10 days if it is in recess.

If the National Assembly does not consider the proclamation valid, it will vote otherwise. A two-thirds majority of both houses—the Senate and the House of Representatives—is required to uphold or reject the declaration.

Reps propose bill to increase membership from 360 to 366

by Folarin Kehinde October 31, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The House of Representatives has introduced a bill to amend Section 49 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) to allocate six special seats for women and persons living with disabilities (PWDs).

The bill, titled “Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Sixth Alteration) (Six Special Seats for Special Interest Groups) Bill, 2024 (HB.1811),” was presented for its first reading during plenary on Wednesday.

Sponsored by House Spokesman Akintunde Rotimi (Ekiti-APC), the proposed amendment seeks to increase the total number of representatives in the House from 360 to 366, with the six additional seats reserved specifically for women and PWDs.

According to the bill, these special seats would be distributed evenly across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, ensuring one representative from each group per region. Candidates for these seats must meet all qualifications required for regular House members.

The bill also proposes that elections for these roles would be conducted through an electoral college made up of members from the National Associations of each special group, with input from grassroots and regional levels in a multi-tiered election process.

It added that, once elected, the representatives would serve the same term as other House members and receive equivalent benefits, as outlined in the bill.

Rotimi stated that the bill aims to enhance representation for women and individuals with disabilities, who often face significant barriers to political participation.

“The inclusion of these special seats will ensure that the voices of underrepresented groups are heard at the national level, creating a more balanced and inclusive legislative framework for Nigeria,” he said.

House of Reps summons Wike, DSS DG, FCT CP over rising insecurity in Abuja

by Folarin Kehinde October 22, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The House of Representatives has summoned Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), along with Olatunji Disu, FCT Commissioner of Police, and Adeola Ajayi, Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), over rising insecurity in Abuja.

The decision follows a motion raised by Ismail Dabo, a lawmaker from Bauchi state, after his aide, Nimah Sulaiman, was kidnapped and murdered by ‘one chance’ operators at Bannex junction in Wuse 2 on October 17.

Dabo expressed concern over the escalating rate of abductions and criminal activity in both the suburbs and the city centre, blaming the use of unregistered and unpainted taxis for facilitating these crimes.

He stressed the need for immediate government action to restore safety to the nation’s capital, which has become increasingly unsafe for residents.

“This heinous crime has sent shockwaves through our community, confirming the escalating insecurity in the FCT. It is our collective responsibility as lawmakers to ensure the safety and security of our citizens,” he said.

The House adopted the motion, calling for the public officials to appear before the committees on FCT, police affairs, and national security and intelligence to address the security crisis.

Reps write Canada over woman threatening to kill Nigerians, list demands [DOCUMENT]

by Folarin Kehinde August 29, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The House of Representatives Committee on Diaspora Matters has requested the Canadian Government to prosecute one Amaka Patience Sunnberger, a Nigerian citizen based in the country, for hate speech.

The demand was contained in a letter jointly signed by Tochukwu Okere, chairman of the committee; and Biodun Omoleye, chairman of Nigeria-Canada Parliamentary Friendship Group.

Recall that in a recent viral TikTok clip, Sunnberger was heard threatening to kill fellow Nigerians living in Canada.

“Record me, it’s time to start poisoning the meals of the Yorubas and Benin people, poison their food and drinks at work so they can begin to die one by one,” she said.

In the letter dated August 28, 2024 and addressed to James Christoff, Canada’s high commissioner to Nigeria, the lawmakers said Sunnberger’s comments “are a direct threat” to the lives and safety of millions of Nigerians.

“On behalf of the Nigeria-Canada Parliamentary Friendship Group, we are writing to express our deep concern regarding the actions of Ms. Amaka Patience Sunberger, a Nigerian citizen residing in Canada,” the letter reads.

“Ms. Sunberger has recently been recorded making inflammatory statements that incite violence against the Yoruba and Edo ethnic groups in Nigeria, including advocating for the poisoning of food and water supplies to achieve their mass genocide.

“We urge that Ms. Sunnberger be prosecuted under the relevant sections of the Criminal Code of Canada to hold her accountable for her incitement to genocide and hate speech,” the lawmakers said.

“We request that the Canadian government issue a public condemnation of Ms. Sunnberger’s actions to reaffirm Canada’s commitment to combatting hate speech, violence, and genocide.

“We also request that Canadian authorities collaborate with Nigerian authorities to prevent any potential escalation of violence because of Ms. Sunnberger’s incitement, and to ensure that justice is served.

“Canada and Nigeria share a strong bilateral relationship founded on mutual respect for human rights and the rule of law.

“The actions of Ms. Sunnberger threaten to undermine these values. We trust that you will take all necessary steps to address this issue in accordance with Canadian and international law.”

Reps to go after 5,000 companies owing Nigerian Govt N5.2 trillion in unpaid taxes

by Folarin Kehinde March 7, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The House of Representatives has mandated its committees to investigate the non-remittance of N5 trillion to the Federal Government by some businesses operating in Nigeria.

The decision to go after the tax defaulters followed the adoption of a motion moved by Esosa Iyawe on Thursday during plenary.

The House resolved to mandate the Committees on Public Account and Finance to probe the non-remittance by the organizations and recover the money owed the government.

Moving the motion, Iyawe said 5,000 companies owe the Federal Government N5.2 trillion between 2015 and 2019.

He said that there is another report stating that in 2021, some companies failed to remit over N17 billion.

“Audit reports from 2015 to 2019 which revealed government agencies owing hundreds of billions in FIRS taxes comprising underpayments and under-recoveries and over 5,000 Companies and Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of the Federal Government owing (N5.2 Trillion) (five trillion, two hundred billion, Naira in withholding taxes,” he said.

He stated that some of the culprits are multinational corporations that the Federal Government is treating with kid gloves, while small businesses are subjected to multiple taxes.

The motion was taken unanimously without opposition.

The House directed the committees to report back to the in four weeks.
