Accord Party Set To Declare Adeleke As Sole Gubernatorial Candidate

by Nelson Ugwuagbo December 10, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Accord Party in Osun State is set to officially declare Governor Ademola Adeleke as its candidate for the 2026 governorship election.

The declaration is scheduled to take place today, Wednesday, December 10, 2025, during the partyโ€™s governorship primary in Osogbo.

Confirming the development on Wednesday, the Osun State Chairman of the Accord Party, Pastor Victor Akande, announced that Governor Adeleke is the sole aspirant for the ticket.

Akande noted that approximately 150 delegates would participate in the exercise, with five delegates selected from each of the stateโ€™s 30 local government areas.

โ€œGovernor Ademola Adeleke is our sole candidate for the 2026 governorship election. We are declaring him today. As you know, he formally defected to our party in November and we publicly presented him on Tuesday,โ€ Akande said.

BREAKING: Osun Local Council Polls Will Hold Saturday as Planned โ€“ Governor Adeleke

by Folarin Kehinde February 21, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Governor Ademola Adeleke has announced that the local government elections in Osun State will proceed as scheduled on Saturday, despite tensions between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC).

The governorโ€™s position was made known in a statement issued on Friday by his spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed.

The announcement follows the recent ruling by the Court of Appeal, which reinstated APC-backed local government officials previously sacked by the state government. The courtโ€™s decision fueled disputes between the two major parties over control of the local councils.

Earlier on Thursday, the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, had cautioned Governor Adeleke against conducting the election. He argued that the reinstatement of the sacked local government officials by the Court of Appeal meant their term was still valid until October 2025. According to Fagbemi, holding another election would violate the Constitution.

He said, โ€œNotwithstanding the judgment of the Court of Appeal referenced above, which in effect means that the term of office of the elected officials has regained currency and will naturally run out in October, 2025, His Excellency has insisted that a new Local Government election shall be held on Saturday, 22nd February, 2025. Any such election that may be held will not only be invalid since the term of office of the elected officials just restored by the judgement of the Court of Appeal will still be running until October 2025, it will also amount to an egregious breach of the Constitution which Governor Adeleke has sworn to uphold. Again, the recent judgement of the Supreme Court which has validated and entrenched Local Government autonomy also strengthens the obligation on Governor Adeleke to ensure smooth, non-violent transition from one elected officials to another in accordance with the statutorily prescribed 3 year tenure.

โ€œIt is, therefore, of utmost importance for Governor Adeleke to advice Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC) to shelve the idea of proceeding with any Local Government Election now.โ€

However, speaking during a meeting with a delegation of civil society organizations in Osogbo, Governor Adeleke reassured the public that the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) was fully prepared for the polls.

โ€œI welcome you all to Osun state. Our people are prepared for elections tommorow. They yearn to have their choices as chairmen and councillors.

โ€œOSIEC has also done marvelous preparatory job according to reports at my disposal. Several political parties are participating and I believe there will be a level playing ground for all to test their popularity with the massesโ€, the statement quoted the Governor as saying to the visiting activists.

โ€œMy advice to all parties including local and national stakeholders is to abide by democratic norms. As for me and my people, we stand by the rule of law, not illega self- help.

โ€œElection is going to hold and the outcome will be a fast tracked development at the local level. I urge our people to remain peaceful. Osun is a truly peaceful stateโ€, Governor Adeleke added.

JUST IN: IGP Egbetokun Deploys Tactical Squads to Osun State Following Bloody Clash

by Folarin Kehinde February 18, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has ordered the deployment of more tactical squads to Osun State to strengthen security and restore peace after violent clashes.

The decision comes after a series of confrontations at various local government secretariats in the state.

Supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) engaged in a violent struggle for control over local government councils.

Tensions escalated following a court ruling that granted the APC control over several local government areas. Eyewitnesses reported that suspected APC supporters stormed government buildings in Osogbo and Olorunda, attempting to assert control. However, PDP supporters resisted, leading to the escalation of violence.

Reacting, the police boss condemned the violence. In a statement signed by Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, he vowed to bring those responsible to justice.

โ€œThe Police recognizes that violence undermines the democratic process and threatens the wellbeing of citizens, and hereby affirms its commitment to identifying and prosecuting the perpetrators of these acts, ensuring they face the full weight of the law,โ€ the statement read.

Egbetokun warned individuals disturbing the peace in Osun State. He declared that the Police Force will not tolerate any form of lawlessness, hooliganism, or acts of anarchy.

The IGP also called on residents, community leaders, and political stakeholders to reject violence and maintain peace. He urged all parties to respect the judiciary, emphasizing that legal disputes should be resolved through the courts rather than violence.

The Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke has issued a directive urging all residents, including politicians, to stay away from local government secretariats to prevent further bloodshed and protect public assets.

This, he said, is in response to the violent clashes triggered by an alleged illegal takeover attempt by sacked APC chairmen and councillors.

Adeleke disclosed this in a message in he posted on his official X account on Monday evening.

“Following reports of a failed illegal takeover bid of local government councils in Osun by the sacked APC Chairmen and councillors, I hereby direct all Osun residents, including politicians across all political divides, to stay away from the local government secretariats to protect public properties and avoid further bloodshed,” the governor stated.

The directive comes as tensions remain high, with workers under the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees withdrawing their services across the state, effectively leaving the council secretariats under lock and key.

“This has become necessary, especially as the council secretariats are expected to be under lock and key due to the withdrawal of service announced by workers of the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) across the state,” he added.

Expressing grief over the casualties resulting from the crisis, the governor extended his condolences to the families of those affected.

“I equally condole families of victims of the APC illegal takeover bid and chaos unleashed across the state by the APC and their hired thugs.

“The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lost five members, with several others wounded. Two of those members are from Iragbiji, Boripe local government.

“Another two were killed at Ola Oluwa Local Government. Another one was lost at Ikire. We must stop further bloodshed,” his statement further noted.

According to the governor, in his bid to restore order and ensure safety, the governor directed security agencies to take full control of all local government secretariats.

“I have directed security agencies to take charge of all local government secretariats, and I hereby assure residents of Osun of their safety and protection of lives and properties,” he affirmed.

JUST IN: โ€œMen Mount” โ€“ Davido attacks APC, Police CP as violence erupts in Osun

by Folarin Kehinde February 17, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Afrobeat sensation David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has publicly criticized the Osun State Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Abba, amid the ongoing political unrest in the state.

Osun State, currently governed by Davidoโ€™s uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke, has been embroiled in heightened tensions between members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC). The crisis stems from attempts by sacked local government chairmen, who were elected under the APC, to reclaim their positions despite court rulings that removed them from office.

Over the weekend, Governor Adeleke held a press conference urging President Bola Tinubu to intervene and restrain his Minister, Gboyega Oyetola, from allegedly using security forces to reinstate the dismissed chairmen. The governor emphasized that any grievances should be addressed through legal appeals rather than forceful takeovers.

The situation escalated on Monday, February 17, 2025, when gunfire erupted across multiple local government secretariats. The dismissed chairmen and their supporters attempted to forcefully reclaim their offices, facing strong resistance from PDP members.

Amid the unfolding chaos, Davido took to his X (formerly Twitter) handle to call out the Osun State police chief, accusing him of failing to uphold justice and the rule of law.

In a series of strongly worded posts written in a mix of English and Pidgin, the singer lambasted the commissioner, warning him against partiality.

โ€œMr Commissioner, respect the rule of law!!! You are not madder or crazier than us!! Make we all kuru mad!! MEN MOUNT WALAI TO KRF!!! I will post you every day everywhere, Mr man!!! Try me, fucker,โ€ he wrote.

In another post, he continued, โ€œMr Umar Abba, Osun State Commissioner, you are a disgrace to your children!!! Game on, FUCKER!!!! All of us go mad together!! Werey!!! Mr Commissioner, we die here.โ€

Davidoโ€™s outburst has further intensified discussions surrounding the political crisis in Osun, drawing widespread reactions from the public and stakeholders. As tensions continue to rise, all eyes remain on the state authorities and federal intervention to restore order.

by Folarin Kehinde February 14, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Osun State Government has urged residents to prioritize safe sexual practices and avoid unprotected sex, especially during Valentineโ€™s Day celebrations.

In a statement signed by the Executive Secretary of the Osun State Agency for the Control of HIV/AIDS (O-SACA), Olusegun Daramola, the government announced plans to distribute free condoms and lubricants at selected malls and lounges across the state to promote safe behaviour and curb the spread of HIV/AIDS.

Daramola stated that Valentineโ€™s Day presents an opportunity to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS prevention, stressing the importance of responsible sexual health choices.

โ€œItโ€™s essential to avoid risky behaviours, such as unprotected sexual intercourse. We encourage those who havenโ€™t already done so to get tested and know their status,โ€ he stated.

He reaffirmed the commitment of Governor Ademola Nurudeen Jackson Adelekeโ€™s administration to reducing HIV prevalence in Osun State and achieving the goal of ending AIDS by 2030.

โ€œTo support safe practices, the agency will provide condoms and lubricants at selected locations, including malls and lounges. Please approach our vendors to access these valuable resources. Letโ€™s share love, not the disease,โ€ the statement read.

Obasanjo lay curse on those wishing him dead

by Folarin Kehinde November 27, 2024

Former President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo has said he woke up to rumours of his death.

He said some people wrote on social media that he passed away midnight of Monday.

Obasanjo made this known while speaking at the commissioning of Old-Garage-Oke-Fia-Lameco road by Governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke.

Adeleke had invited Obasanjo to commission the road project as part of the activities marking the governorโ€™s second year anniversary in office.

Speaking at the event, Obasanjo dispelled the death speculation, saying he was embittered to see people wishing him dead.

The former President who spoke in Yoruba, said he was phoned by a close ally and asked to check the social media for the death rumours.

He said he quickly visited the social media through his phone and confirmed the death speculation.

Obasanjo explained that he immediately shared the death rumours to his family and friends.

He wondered why anyone could want him to die, saying that the speculators may wish him to depart surface of the earth but their wish will not come true.

The former president said anyone who thinks ill of him would not escape tragedy.

He commended Governor Adeleke for his extraordinary performance in Osun, saying his second term is sure.

Obasanjo urged Adeleke to continue to prioritise the welfare of the people.
