Obaseki has escaped – Edo Gov-elect, Okpebholo allege

by Folarin Kehinde November 10, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Edo State Governor-elect, Senator Monday Okpebholo has expressed concern over what he described as Godwin Obaseki’s bizarre public displays.

He claimed that Obaseki has disappeared from the state.

In a statement made available to newsmen on Sunday and signed by Godspower Inegbe, Okpebholo said Edo people are worried by Obaseki’s reckless statements and urged him to evaluate his state of mind.

The Governor-Elect in the statement raised the alarm regarding the whereabouts of Obaseki, who he claimed reportedly fled Benin City, the Edo State capital, using a disguised bus.

The statement revealed that Obaseki chased out everyone from the Government House on Friday before escaping to a yet-to-be known location more than 72 hours before his official departure from office.

The statement further noted that Obaseki is making the false claims to shift attention away from his sinister plans to leave the country through the land borders.

“As of Friday, 8th of November, the whereabouts of Obaseki is unknown. He has chased everyone out of Edo State Government House. He has abandoned governance in the State, and he is on the run.

“He has escaped through the road out of Benin. He did not pass through the airport. If he is as popular as he claims, why did he not use the airport to escape? Instead, he hired a bus and disguised while escaping from Edo State.

Obaseki is trying to push out these narratives in order to distract the public. His antics will not work. We know his plans, and we will continue to expose his shenanigans to Edo people,” the statement read.

“Edo election is a do or die affair” Obaseki insists

by Folarin Kehinde September 20, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State says he does not regret saying that the September 21 Edo governorship election is a do-or-die affair.

LEADING REPORTERS recalls that the governor had recently made the statement, which has made him come under heavy criticism, especially from members of the opposition party a few days ago.

Obaseki, while speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, maintained that the election is a do-or-die affair because the Edo people will be doomed if the All Progressives Congress, APC takes over the state.

According to him, the opposition party has perfected plans to rig the election in their favour on Saturday, warning that the state’s people would resist them.

Obaseki also expressed his lack of confidence in the police before the election, accusing them of bias.

“It’s a do-or-die affair because if they do, we die, the level of impunity, the level of recklessness we see in the opposition party if they take over Edo state, is finished – that is the end.

“If you see the evidence of what they have done, the blatant way they have gone about it. It is like they forget that the police are being funded by taxpayers’ money, Nigerians taxpayers’ money. They should just be a bit more professional and unbiased,” he said.

Obaseki announces N1 billion grant to market women few days to Edo election

by Folarin Kehinde September 18, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Ahead of the Edo governorship election set for next Saturday, Governor Godwin Obaseki has announced plans to distribute one billion naira as grants to traders in the state.

The governor said the financial support comes as a token of appreciation for the market women’s loyalty and backing of his administration over the years.

Governor Obaseki made the declaration during an annual gathering in Benin, hosted by Edo market women in his honor.

He stated that the distribution would be handled transparently, in collaboration with market women leaders, to ensure fairness.

Obaseki also hinted that if Dr. Asue Ighodalo, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the upcoming election, is elected, he would double the grant.

“I am deeply grateful for the support you’ve shown throughout my tenure,” Obaseki said.

He further expressed appreciation for their pledge to support Ighodalo in the upcoming election.

In her response, Madam Blacky Ogiemen, leader of the market women, praised the Obaseki administration for its achievements and reaffirmed their loyalty to the PDP.

She stated that the traders have already resolved to cast their votes for Ighodalo, confident in his ability to build on Obaseki’s legacy.

“The Edo State Women Traders have always been supportive of the government, and we promise to continue even after your tenure,” Ogiemen said.

JUST IN: PDP’ll consider signing the peace accord – Obaseki declares ahead of Edo guber

by Folarin Kehinde September 17, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Edo Governor Godwin Obaseki has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party will sign the peace accord ahead of the governorship election in the state scheduled for Saturday, September 21, 2024.

Governor Obaseki made the declaration following a closed-door meeting with the caucus of the PDP in Edo State.

He wrote on social media: “Arising from a closed-door meeting of the caucus of our great party, the PDP in Edo State, we wish to thank the Police IG and the Chairman of the INEC for their assurances of providing a level playing field for all players in Saturday’s gubernatorial election in the state.

“As a party, we are ready for the election and confident that the people will make the right choice by voting for our candidates, who stand head and shoulders above the others.

“We are hopeful that with the courts resuming today, all our members who have been detained in Abuja will be released or granted bail to reunite with their families. On that ground, we will consider signing the Peace Accord.”

Recall that the PDP had earlier refused to sign the peace accord initiated by the National Peace Committee led by former Military President, Abdulsalami Abubakar.

The party had lamented over the constant arrest of its supporters in the weeks leading up to the election.
