Tech Community in Shock As Microsoft Layoff 7000 Employees, Adjusts for AI

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 14, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Microsoft has laid off more than 7,000 employees, representing about 3% of its global workforce, in a move aimed at reinforcing its long-term strategy centered on artificial intelligence.

The company described the decision as a calculated effort to streamline operations and reallocate resources to its expanding AI initiatives, rather than a consequence of job displacement by AI technologies.

“This adjustment is a calculated step to optimize resources and ensure continued robust investment in Microsoft’s burgeoning AI platform,” the company said.

While job cuts in the tech sector often raise concerns about automation, Reuters reported that the layoffs were driven by financial restructuring to support new AI ventures—not by AI replacing human roles.

Microsoft has previously stated: “We have made huge investments in AI because we are optimistic about what it can do to help people, industry and society, and because we’re committed to bringing technology and people together to realize the promises of AI responsibly.”

Speaking at a recent event in Silicon Valley, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella revealed that AI is already playing a significant role in the company’s development processes. “Maybe 20 to 30% of the code that is inside of our repos today, and some of our projects, are probably all written by software,” Nadella said.

He also described Microsoft as a “distillation factory,” focused on refining large, general-purpose AI models into smaller, task-specific tools.

The layoffs reflect Microsoft’s broader strategy to consolidate resources and accelerate its position in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.

Bill Gates to give 99% of his $200 billion wealth to charity

by Folarin Kehinde May 8, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Microsoft co-founder stated on Thursday in a post on his personal blog, Gates Notes, that the foundation, which is considered to be among the most significant charitable organisations globally, will close its doors by December 31, 2045.

“People will say a lot of things about me when I die, but I am determined that “he died rich” will not be one of them.

“There are too many urgent problems to solve for me to hold onto resources that could be used to help people,” he said.

He added, “That is why I have decided to give my money back to society much faster than I had originally planned. I will give away virtually all my wealth through the Gates Foundation over the next 20 years to the cause of saving and improving lives around the world. And on December 31, 2045, the foundation will close its doors permanently.”

In a chart shared in the blog post, Gates revealed that he plans to give away 99 per cent of his wealth by 2045, leaving just one per cent, or about $1.6 billion, for himself and his family.

Founded in 2000 with his now ex-wife, Melinda French Gates, the foundation has spent over $100 billion on global health, education, and poverty alleviation, helping to fund vaccine development, medical research, and emergency aid around the world.

He also notes a shift from the original plan.

“This is a change from our original plans. When Melinda and I started the Gates Foundation in 2000, we included a clause in the foundation’s very first charter: The organisation would sunset several decades after our deaths. A few years ago, I began to rethink that approach.

More recently, with the input from our board, I now believe we can achieve the foundation’s goals on a shorter timeline, especially if we double down on key investments and provide more certainty to our partners,” he stated.

Daily Mail reports that the remaining one per cent of his fortune may ultimately go to his three adult children: Phoebe, Rory and Jennifer.

Outlining the foundation’s achievements, he said, “I am deeply proud of what we have accomplished in our first 25 years.

“We were central to the creation of Gavi and the Global Fund, both of which transformed the way the world procures and delivers lifesaving tools like vaccines and anti-retrovirals. Together, these two groups have saved more than 80 million lives so far. Along with Rotary International, we have been a key partner in reviving the effort to eradicate polio.

“We supported the creation of a new vaccine for rotavirus that has helped reduce the number of children who die from diarrhea each year by 75 percent. Every step of the way, we brought together other foundations, non-profits, governments, multilateral agencies, and the private sector as partners to solve big problems—as we will continue to do for the next twenty years.”

Despite decades of impact, the Gates Foundation has drawn criticism from some who say Gates holds too much sway over global health funding decisions.

But, in an interview with the Associated Press on Thursday, he remains unapologetic, saying, like any private citizen, he can choose how to spend the money he earns

“I think 20 years is the right balance between giving as much as we can to make progress on these things and giving people a lot of notice that now this money will be gone,” he said.

Bill Gates quit Microsoft amid sexual probe with staffer

by Leading Reporters May 20, 2021
written by Leading Reporters
  • In October, when the relationship between the two burst into public view, French Gates was unhappy, so she hired divorce lawyers, setting in motion a process that culminated with the announcement of their divorce.

Bill Gates quit the Microsoft Corp. board in 2020 over an inappropriate relationship with a female employee, the Wall Street Journal reported Sunday.

The board members pressured Gates to step down as they began an investigation in 2019 after a female engineer working for the firm had alleged in a letter that she had a sexual relationship over years with Gates, the Journal reported, citing people close to the matter.

During the investigation, some board members decided Gates should no longer sit as a director at the software company he started and led for decades, the people said.

“Microsoft Corp. board members decided that Bill Gates needed to step down from its board in 2020 as they pursued an investigation into the billionaire’s prior romantic relationship with a female Microsoft employee that was deemed inappropriate.”

A Microsoft spokesman also said, “Microsoft received a concern in the latter half of 2019 that Bill Gates sought to initiate an intimate relationship with a company employee in the year 2000.”

“A committee of the Board reviewed the concern, aided by an outside law firm to conduct a thorough investigation. Throughout the investigation, Microsoft provided extensive support to the employee who raised the concern.”

Meanwhile, Bridgitt Arnold, a spokeswoman for Gates, said, “There was an affair almost 20 years ago which ended amicably,” noting, “Gates’s decision to transition off the board was in no way related to this matter.”

Gates quit the Microsoft board to focus more on his philanthropic organization, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Arnold added

“He had expressed an interest in spending more time on his philanthropy starting several years earlier.”

Gates and his wife Melinda French, who co-founded their charity to fight global poverty and disease, announced earlier this month that they were ending their marriage after 27 years.

In a joint statement posted on Twitter, the couple said, “We no longer believe we can grow together as a couple in this next phase of our lives.”

In a divorce petition, Melinda said their marriage was “irretrievably broken.”

Although the couple has not said what prompted the divorce, one source of concern for French Gates was her husband’s dealings with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, according to the Journal.

A spokeswoman for Gates said in 2019 that he met with Epstein for philanthropic reasons, but regretted doing so.
