Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger officially exit ECOWAS

by Folarin Kehinde January 29, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have officially exited the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The withdrawal, which was first announced on January 29, 2024, became effective on Wednesday, January 29, 2925, following a one-year notice period mandated by ECOWAS regulations.

The three Sahel nations, now united under the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), have accused ECOWAS of imposing “inhuman, illegal, and illegitimate” sanctions in response to their military takeovers.

The juntas also criticized the bloc for its perceived failure to support their fight against jihadist insurgencies and for allegedly serving the interests of their former colonial ruler, France.

In their realignment of foreign partnerships, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have strengthened ties with Russia, Turkey, and Iran, while distancing themselves from Western influence.

Despite their departure, ECOWAS has announced transitional measures to prevent disruptions in trade and mobility for citizens of the three nations:

ECOWAS-branded passports and identity cards will remain valid for travel within member states.

Goods and services from the three countries will still enjoy trade benefits under the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme (ETLS).

Visa-free movement, residence, and establishment will continue to apply to their citizens under existing ECOWAS protocols.

The bloc also confirmed the creation of a framework for discussions on the future relationship between ECOWAS and the breakaway nations.

VIDEO: “We need your help” Nigerian Girls in Mali Prison begs FG

by Folarin Kehinde October 7, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Nigerian girls reportedly seen in a viral video in Mali prison has appealed to the federal government to come to their rescue and ensure their repatriation to Nigeria.

The ladies were seen begging for help and lamenting the hardship melted on them by the Mali prison officials having spent several years in the prison.

Reacting, the Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, expressed shock and surprise at how some the ladies who were rescued from a sex trafficking syndicate in Mali and repatriated back to Nigeria, managed to return to that country.

Dabiri-Erewa was reacting to a trending video of some ladies who claimed to be Nigerians in a prison in the West African country pleading to be rescued.

She expressed disbelief at the situation and wondered how the girls managed to return to the country after their repatriation.

Speaking in a video posted on her X handle on Tuesday, the NIDCOM Chairperson lamented that despite President Bola Tinubu’s directive to ensure the return of stranded nationals in foreign countries, Nigerians should be cautious not to engage in criminal activities or irregular migration.

“I want to address once again a viral video showing some girls shouting from a prison in Mali, asking to be brought back home,” Dabiri-Erewa said in the video titled “Addressing the video circulating on Nigerian girls in a prison in Mali.”

“Some time ago, the Chief of Defence Staff helped us to repatriate about 40 girls. We have identified that some of those girls who were brought back at that time have shockingly found their way back to Mali.

“So, while President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has instructed that wherever Nigerians are stranded, we must ensure their return, it is also wrong to commit crimes and engage in criminal behaviour.

The Office of the National Security Adviser is responsible for the multi-agency team handling evacuations, and the NSA’s office has been repatriating people.

“We want to appeal to Nigerians to obey the laws of other countries. Crime, criminality, and irregular migration are extremely dangerous. Where you are running to might be worse than where you are running from,” she cautioned.
