BREAKING: Lagos Assembly suspends Alimosho council chairman

by Folarin Kehinde October 7, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Lagos State House of Assembly has indefinitely suspended the chairman of the Alimosho local government area, Jelili Sulaimon.

This was announced during the House of Assembly’s plenary session on Monday, October 7.

The lawmakers resolved that the vice chairman of the council, Mr. Akinpelu Johnson, should take over the running of its affairs.

The House further instructed the management of the council, including the manager and treasurer, to recognize the authority of the vice chairman and provide him with all the support needed for effective work.

The chairman was suspended in a unanimous vote by the lawmakers due to alleged non-compliance, defiance, and unyielding attitude toward the legislative House.

The Chairman of the House Committee on Local Government Administration and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Sanni Okanlawon, sponsored the motion.

Majority Leader of the House, Noheem Adams, while supporting the call for Jelili’s suspension, added that the action would make other local government chairmen sit well.

“The Alimosho council chairman does not follow procurement processes or the budget. There has been a lot of misconduct from him and I support that the chairman be suspended indefinitely,” he said.

by Folarin Kehinde September 20, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested one Ujunwa Una ‘f’ and Chinelo Igbechionwu ‘f’ for conspiracy and child sales.

The suspects were arrested by patrol officers from Ojodu Division stationed at Berger bus-stop, an entry point into Lagos State, whom had earlier been alerted about the suspects by a Good Samaritan. The suspects were found with two newborn baby girls, approximately six-days old, while traveling from Abia State on September 9, 2024.

Investigations revealed that the suspects were en route to deliver the babies to one nurse in Lagos State whom the mother of the babies promised to link them up with only after they had arrived Lagos.

Upon questioning, the suspects confessed to the crime, stating that they were paid the sum of One Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira (₦150,000) for transportation of the babies to Lagos. The suspects added that the mother of the babies sold the babies because she could not give them proper care.

The case was transferred to the Gender Unit of the Command from where the newborns were placed in the custody of a motherless babies home for proper care and medical evaluation.

While investigation is ongoing to arrest other conspirators, the arrested suspects were arraigned on Thursday, September 19, 2024.

BREAKING: Lagos Govt Bans Single-Use Plastics, takeaways packs

by Folarin Kehinde January 21, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Lagos State Government has announced a ban on single-use plastics and Styrofoam packs, popularly called ‘takeaways’, with “immediate effect.”

The state’s Commissioner, Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.

According to the statement, which was posted on X by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kunle Adeshina, the use of these plastics has caused a menace in the environment.

It read, “Most drainage channels in the state are daily clogged up by Styrofoam and other plastics through its indiscriminate distribution and usage despite the regular cleaning and evacuation of the drains with humongous amounts.

“The Commissioner added that the State Government cannot fold its hands and watch the continued desecration of its environment especially for a coastal city.”

The statement added that the Commissioner has directed the Lagos Waste Management Authority and the Kick Against Indiscipline to immediately commence the implementation of the ban.

It read, “He asked the two agencies to clamp down on all the production companies and distribution outlets for Styrofoam in the state to prevent further distribution.

“The Commissioner advised producers, distributors, and end-users of these styrofoam packs to take the ban seriously and find alternatives or risk heavy fines, and other penalties including sealing of their premises.”

Wahab advised consumers and residents to boycott styrofoam packs and single-use plastics and imbibe the practice of using reusable food containers and water bottles for their food and drinks.

The PUNCH reported in January 2023, that Lagos State had continued to battle the menace of plastic pollution despite the estimated $2 billion recycling industry in Nigeria

According to the report, Lagos State produces 870,000 tonnes of plastic garbage annually, and despite the government’s efforts to address the threat of plastic pollution and turn it into a profitable venture, the environmental concern just won’t go away.

In a September report, a non-governmental organisation, the Center for Earth Works, lamented the indiscriminate use and disposal of plastic materials by Nigerians and demanded an end to plastic pollution in the country.

Azman’s Air Near-Fatal Landing: Passengers Say Worn-Out Tyres May Be Responsible For The Incident

by Leading Reporters March 10, 2021
written by Leading Reporters

Some passengers onboard Azman Air Boeing 737-500 with Registration Marks SN-SYS, which left from Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja to Murtala Mohammed Airport Lagos which lost four tyres on landing on 16th of February believe that bad landing on worn-out tyres may have been the cause of the near-fatal incident involving the aircraft.

The incident happened around 5pm local time in Lagos when the airline from Abuja to Lagos began to experience landing challenges.

Azman Tyres

One of the passengers who spoke to LeadingReporters on condition that his name would not be mentioned said that he started feeling that something was wrong when the pilot kept hovering around the airport.  He said that the pilot made the first attempt at landing, but had to pull up the plane again, citing bad weather condition.

The passenger who boarded the plane said that the landing was so sudden and nerve-cracking that you would know that there was something amiss. He frowned at what he described as desperate moves by the owners of the airline to stop them from taking pictures, insisting that it infringed their right to be well informed about what happened.

LR- Azman

“Trying to force us not to take pictures was a desperate move by the airliner.  Possibly, there was something they wanted to hide. It was the height of insensitivity to treat passengers who narrowly escaped being perished the way they did.  They seemed more concerned in keeping their names than caring about the passengers.

“We thought we were not going to make it.  In fact, I started noticing that something was wrong when the pilot began to hover around the airport.  He made the first attempt at landing and suddenly pulled up the plane.  I knew something was wrong.  He announced inclement weather, but it seemed something much more than that.

LR Azman

The plane almost land-crashed.  When we were evacuated, something told me that the problem may be with the tyre.  I looked at the tyres.  I counted four burst tyres.  But beyond that, you’d notice that some of the tyres are so badly worn out before the burst.  The pictures are here to speak for themselves.

The aircraft, was said to have 49 passengers on board and 6 crew members. It had 4 burst tyres on landing on Runway 18R of Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, Nigeria.

Azman Tyres

All effort to get the management of Azman Air to address the allegations were unsuccessful as the person who spoke to our Lead Investigation Editor said he was not in a position to answer and could not link LeadingReporters to Azman Communication Department.
