BREAKING: Labour insists on N250,000 minimum wage as Private sector accepts N62,000

by Folarin Kehinde June 8, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Tripartite Committee on the new National Minimum Wage meeting has ended in Abuja, the federal capital.

The state government and the organised private sector agreed to pay N62,000 as new minimum wage, but the organised labour insists on N250,000 as minimum wage.

The committee is expected to present the report to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

LEADING REPORTERS recalls that the Nigerian Government resumed negotiations with Organized Labour on Wednesday after rejecting their earlier demand of N494,000. This led to a strike which was called off a day later after the Federal Government agreed to increase the minimum wage.

BREAKING: Labour calls off strike after FG intervention

by Folarin Kehinde June 4, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have called off their strike after one day of industrial action following the proposed N60,000 minimum wage offer by Federal Government.

The TUC president Festus Osifo, according to Channels Tv, said this on Tuesday in Abuja.

This comes shortly after the federal government met the labour leaders late Monday night to increase the initial proposed N60,000 minimum wage.

The labour unions had proposed N615,500 as the minimum wage, citing the high cost of living.

However, the federal government rejected the N615,500 proposal and offered N48,000.

On May 15, the labour unions rejected the N48,000 minimum wage offered by the government.

On May 21, the federal government increased the proposed minimum wage to N54,000, which the labour again rejected and described as “unacceptable”.

Again, the federal government proposed N60,000, and it was rejected.

JUST IN: Labour shuts FCT Minister’s gate

by Folarin Kehinde June 3, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Strike by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) is gaining momentum in the Federal Capital Territory, (FCT).

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) Labour, the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC) on Monday shut the main gate of the FCT Administration popularly known as the Minister’s Gate, stopping the workers from gaining entrance.

The workers were seen floating around the gate while labour leaders enforced compliance of “no entry, no going out.”

The President of JUAC, Comrade Rifkatu Lortyer, vowed the action would continue till their demands are met.

She advised FCTA and FCDA workers to stay at home and obey the rules.

She said: “You know it is a long time struggle over the minimum wage and the electricity tariff that is just added to it. And till now government has reached a compromise. Since the national body NLC and TUC have declared strike we have to enforce it”.
Security operatives are presently at the entrance of the FCTA and FCDA.

BREAKING: Labour Rejects FG’s Fresh ₦57,000 Wage Proposal Demand ₦497,000

by Folarin Kehinde May 24, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Organised Labour comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) has again rejected the Federal Government’s new offer of ₦57,000 minimum wage.

The Organised Labour rejected the government’s fresh offer, the third proposal in about a week when negotiation talks resumed on Wednesday.

However, the NLC and the TUC shifted ground from their initial ₦615,000 to ₦497,000.

A prominent member of the Tripartite Committee for the negotiation of a new minimum wage for Nigerian workers told Channels Television labour correspondent that the Federal Government and the Organised Private Sector side of the talks proposed a ₦57,000 monthly minimum wage as against the ₦54,000 they proposed on Tuesday when the committee resumed negotiations. The government had initially proposed ₦48,000 last week, which was also rejected by the Organised Labour.

According to the source, the Organised Labour also saw reasons to drop their demand from the initial ₦615,000 minimum wage to ₦497,000.

The Organised Labour had pulled out of the negotiation last week, accusing the government and private sector of showing unwillingness to agree on a new minimum wage.

At the resumption of the negotiations on Tuesday, the NLC and the TUC also rejected the new proposal of ₦54,000 minimum wage by the government.

The committee is yet to agree on a new minimum wage just about 10 days before the May 31 deadline the labour unions gave to the government to conclude the negotiations.
