JUST IN: “RMAFC lied, We earn 21m monthly”, not N1m Kano Senator Reveals

by Folarin Kehinde August 14, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

A Kano Senator has revealed that he earns a cumulative sum of N21 million monthly in salary and allowances, following a recent pay increase.

Senator Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila, representing Kano South senatorial district, made this disclosure in a chat with the BBC Hausa Service Wednesday morning.

The Senator explained that his official salary is less than N1 million, but with deductions, it comes down to around N600,000. However, he added that each senator receives N21 million monthly as running costs, which is separate from their official salary.

“My monthly salary is less than N1million. After deductions, the figure comes down to a little over N600,000,” the senator said.

“Given the increase effected, in the Senate, each Senator gets N21million every month as running cost,” he added.

There has been controversy recently about the amount federal lawmakers earn monthly, given the present economic realities.

Recall that the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), an agency responsible for fixing salaries and allowances of political office-holders, stated that each senator collects a total monthly salary and allowances of N1,063,860.

The commission’s breakdown of the cumulative take-home pay includes basic salary of N168,866:70; motor vehicle fuelling and maintenance allowance of N126,650; N42,216:66 for personal assistant; domestic staff – N126,650:00; entertainment – N50,660:00; utilities – N50,660; newspapers/periodicals – N25,330:00; Wardrobe allowance – N42,216,66:00; house maintenance – N8,443.33 and constituency allowance – N422,166:66; respectively.

Police uncover fresh plot to set Kano assembly ablaze

by Folarin Kehinde May 27, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Kano State Police Command says it has uncovered fresh plan by some hoodlums to unleash terror and set the state assembly ablaze.

The move is not unconnected with the recent emirate tussle in Kano State following a new law by the House of Assembly.

The commissioner of Police, CP Usaini Gumel disclosed this during a press briefing on Sunday, May 26.

Gumel said the command uncovered plots to launch an attack on the Kano State House of Assembly and other prominent locations in the state.

CP Gumel noted that men of the force have been deployed to embark on a house-to-house search to fish out the miscreants plotting to cause unrest and destabilise the peace in the state.

“We have uncovered credible intelligence about some group of people who are considered as enemies of the state and miscreants who are trying to unleash terror in the state by embarking on targeted attacks at locations, particularly the House of Assembly and some prominent locations within the state capital. This intelligence has been verified by so many sources,” the police chief said.

“We have perfected plans to embark on serious patrols as well as detections particularly areas where we were informed that the miscreants are hiding. No hiding place for them.

“Whoever, under whatever guise is found to be planning to disrupt the peace being enjoyed in the State or feel that he/she can jeopardize the existing security settings in the State will be arrested and made to face the full wrath of the law.

“We are going to embark on a house-to-house search for anybody who they are above the law,” CP Gumel however stated.

Meanwhile, sources say that the miscreants were mobilized and paid to destabilize and cause tension in the state.

According to a source, some targeted areas include residence of the Majority leader of the assembly, Lawan Hussaini who sponsored the repealed law, and a member representing Gwale among others.

Sallah: Kano Residents Settles For Camel as Prices of Ram Skyrocket

by Folarin Kehinde July 9, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Camel sellers in Kano State are smiling home or perhaps to the banks with millions of naira as residents are trooping in to buy camels as the prices of rams, which are the common livestock killed during Sallah festivals have skyrocketed beyond what many residents can afford.

On Friday, Kofar Na’isa livestock market in the metropolis, PREMIUM TIMES noticed that camel sellers were making brisk business and dominated the selling points hitherto used by cows and ram sellers in previous years.

At one of the stalls still selling rams, Idris Illiyasu, a ram dealer from Sokoto, decried the low sale. He said the soaring cost of rams is the reason he was finding it difficult to get customers.

Mr Illiyasu said the prices of the rams start from N40,000 to N105,000. He said the rams selling at N105,000 were sold for N90,000 last year.

Rams selling at N50,000 now were sold at N35,000 last year,” Mr Illiyasu said.

“The surprising thing about this year’s rams market is that there is no panic buying as the Sallah celebration approaches, unlike in the previous years.

“As the Sallah approaches, the prices of rams remain higher while the buyers are shrinking,” Mr Illiyasu said.

“I have been a ram dealer, coming to Kano for over a decade, but this is the year I witnessed such high cost of rams in all the years I have been engaging in the business,” Mr Illiyasu added.

Muslims across the world use rams to celebrate Eid-el Kabir festival because it attracts the highest reward when compared to other livestock.

It Is recommended that one use a ram for the sacrifice provided one can afford it, the next in the reward is a cow.

Islam also recommends animals like the sheep, he-goat, and she-goat which are relatively cheaper than the ram, cow, and camel.

A survey of Kano livestock market suggests that the prices of cows have also skyrocketed.

Even when groups of people contribute to buying cows, the cost still places a huge financial strain on them.

Halliru Diso, a cow dealer in the Kofar Na’isa livestock market, also complained about the increasing cost of the livestock.

He said cows are sold for between N250,000 and N1 million.
