Ramadan: Hisba arrests youths for not fasting

by Folarin Kehinde March 2, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Operatives of the Hisba Board in Kano State have arrested some young men accused of not observing the Ramadan fast on the first day of the holy month.

The Deputy Commander General of the Board, Dr. Mujahideen Abubakar, confirmed the arrests to journalists in the state.

He stated that the suspects were apprehended during routine patrols conducted by Hisba officers in different parts of Kano metropolis.

Additionally, the board arrested around 60 individuals for wearing “indecent haircuts,” which violate Islamic law and local cultural norms.

Furthermore, Hisba officials apprehended some commercial tricycle (keke napep) drivers for allegedly mixing male and female passengers in their vehicles, an act the board insisted it would not tolerate.

The Board vowed to continue its patrols to ensure strict adherence to Sharia law throughout the month of Ramadan.

Hisbah bans sports betting in Kano

by Folarin Kehinde October 2, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Kano State Hisbah Board has banned all forms of sports betting in the state.

The Deputy Commander-General of the board, Dr Mujaheed Aminuddeen, made this known when he briefed journalists on the Hisbah’s renewed effort to fight immorality.

He said the Hisbah has re-launched ‘operation flush out immorality’ and its operatives would soon clampdown on individuals and groups bent on violating social order in the state.

He said in its efforts to restore sanity and discipline in the state, the Hisbah would arrest any landlord who rented out an apartment to unknown person(s) in view of the increasing cases of residential houses being used as lodges and motels in the city.

He stated that the board had further issued new rules regarding courtship, as henceforth, no prospective couples would be allowed to sit in tinted vehicles during courtship particularly in the night.

He pointed out that while street begging is prohibited by the law, female beggars who stayed outdoors late into the night would also be arrested.

Dr Mujaheed also announced that the Hisbah is disturbed by the increasing rate of prostitution among young girls and therefore warned that any woman seen in a tricycle after 10pm would also be apprehended.

He warned the public against violating any of the rules, which he said would attract stiff penalty.

He called on parents to be vigilant on their children, especially the females, and stop them from any misconduct capable of breaking any of the rules as stipulated across the state.

Constitution constraint Gov’s from protecting her citizens – Fayemi

by Leading Reporters May 1, 2021
written by Leading Reporters

The Chairman of Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) Governor Kayode Fayemi said limitations in the Nigerian Constitution and practical challenges were hindering governors from protecting residents in their states.

Fayemi said this while delivering his address at 2021 ‘The Platform’ organised by The Covenant Nation with the theme, ‘Is devolution of powers the solution to Nigeria’s problem’ held in Iganmu, Lagos State, on Saturday.

According to Fayemi, all governors in Nigeria were committed to protecting the lives of residents of their states, saying, however, that they were theoretically chief security officers of their states.

He said although they had the power to engage with all heads of security formations operating in their states, the governors’ directives were often not adhered to until they were cleared by ‘higher authorities.’

“…What would probably not surprise you because you’ve heard this before now is that sometimes that commissioner of police may not necessarily take your directive until he has cleared it with higher authorities,” Fayemi said.

When asked if he meant that governors could not secure their states, Fayemi noted that they could do so but beyond the reliance on federally-controlled policing arrangement.

Speaking on the political structure of Nigeria, the NGF chairman said there was no federation in the world with a unitary policing system except Nigeria.

In Nigeria, due to the rising state of insecurity, some regions have established regional security outfits to protect lives and properties in selected areas. In some northern states, there is Hisbah; South-West has the Western Nigeria Security Network (WNSN) codenamed Operation Amotekun, while  South-East has Ebube Agu security network.

Over the years, many Nigerians, including lawmakers, ethnic groups and religious heads, have called for ‘true federalism’ and restructuring of the country.

However, the Presidency has replied that “such unpatriotic outbursts are both unhelpful and unwarranted” as the government would not succumb to threats and take any decision out of pressure.
