by Folarin Kehinde December 3, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, on Tuesday, directed the 18 local government areas chairmen in the state to submit their statements of account within 48 hours.

The directive was given during a meeting with the council chairmen at the Government House in Benin City, where the governor, represented by his deputy, Dennis Idahosa, emphasised the need for transparency and accountability in governance.

The statement of accounts, according to the governor, should cover the period from September 4, 2023, to date and be submitted to the Assets Verification Committee through the office of the Secretary to the State Government.

Speaking at the meeting, Idahosa relayed the governor’s resolve to foster collaboration with the council bosses for the state’s progress.

He said, “I have listened to you keenly. The governor is a leader of all of us. Election has come and gone, and we are all one family. The governor has asked me to assure you that we are one family.

“Mr. Governor is committed to transparency and accountability in this government. To aid the work of the Assets Verification Committee, the governor would want you to submit your statement of accounts from September 4, 2023, to date, within the next 48 hours. This will enable the committee to perform its duties effectively and efficiently.

“The statement of accounts should be submitted through the office of the Secretary to the State Government to the Assets Verification Committee. The governor thanks you for your time.”

Earlier, the Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, Edo State Chapter, and Chairman of Orhionmwon Local Government Area, Newman Ugiagbe, led the council bosses on a courtesy visit to the governor.

Ugiagbe expressed the chairmen’s commitment to Okpebholo’s administration, pledging to support his policies and programmes to deliver dividends of democracy to the grassroots.

He said, “We are here to congratulate the governor and the deputy on the mandate the Edo people gave them. We also pledge our loyalty to your administration.

“Our doors are open to your instructions, policies, and programmes. We are ready to bring these policies to the grassroots to enable our people to benefit from the dividends of democracy, and we will work to ensure your administration succeeds.”

Okpebholo reverses self, stops free bus service, gives reason

by Folarin Kehinde November 28, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, on Wednesday night, reversed his approval of free bus services across the state announced earlier in the day.

Initially announced on Wednesday morning as part of the state’s welfare initiatives, the decision to suspend the service was communicated later the same day.

The initial directive, as outlined in a press statement by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, stated that the free bus service would cover intra-city routes within Benin metropolis and inter-city routes across the three senatorial districts.

It was intended to reflect Okpebholo’s commitment to enhancing the welfare of Edo residents.

However, a subsequent statement from Itua late Wednesday night called for the earlier announcement to be disregarded.

“The earlier statement announcing the approval of free bus services by the Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, should be disregarded,” he said.

The CPS explained that the governor was being briefed on operational issues within the Edo City Transport Service, which manages the free bus initiative.

“For now, the free bus services have been placed on hold. A new decision by the governor will be communicated to the general public,” he said.

The reversal has raised questions about the operational and logistical challenges facing the programme, leaving residents awaiting further clarification on the state’s transportation policies

Earlier in an interview with The PUNCH, the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Edo State chapter, Bernard Joman, had commended the governor, saying the gesture would help cushion the effect of the harsh economy on Edo commuters.

“It is a welcome development for the Edo Chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress and to the people of the state. It will help to cushion the harsh economic conditions on the people and workers.

“The higher institution students have resumed and they will all be going to various destinations in the state and the free transportation will surely help them.

“I will urge the governor of the state, Senator Monday Okpehbolo, to ensure that the scheme is enduring so that the people and workers will benefit for a long time.”

by Folarin Kehinde November 27, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has approved free bus services for the people of the state through the Edo City Transport Service.

In a press statement on Tuesday issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Fred Itua, the initiative is part of the Okpebholo administration’s drive to entrench his policy direction.

The free bus service, according to the statement, will cover Benin metropolis and the three Senatorial Districts of the state (Intra and Intercity routes) and is part of the governor’s commitment to enhance the welfare of all Edo people.

The statement added, “The bus services will ease the transportation stress. Our people who plan to move around within the Benin metropolis and out will be able to do that without any extra financial burdens.

“Edo Central, like Ekpoma, Iruekpen, Irrua, Uromi, and other places, are also part of the routes the free transportation services will cover.

“Edo North is fully captured. Agbede, Auchi, Okpella, Fugar, and other parts of Edo North are covered in the free transportation scheme of Governor Monday Okpebholo.”

BREAKING: Edo Governor Okpebholo Moves to Investigate Obaseki Administration

by Folarin Kehinde November 24, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has approved the formation of a 14-member State Assets Verification Committee to investigate the administration of his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki.

This decision comes despite a previous plea from the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje to refrain from probing the previous administration.

According to a statement released by the Chief Press Secretary to Edo State Governor, Fred Itua, the committee’s primary task is to verify the state’s assets and liabilities under the previous administration.

The committee, which is scheduled to be inaugurated on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, at the Government House in Benin City, comprises respected sons and daughters from Edo State.

The members of the committee include Dr. Ernest Afolabi Umakhihe as Chairman, Anslem Ojezua as Deputy Chairman, and Prince Kassim Afegbua, Hon. Patrick Ikhariale, Mr. Taiwo Akerele, Hon. Patrick Idiake, and Hon. Rasaq Bello-Osagie as members. Other members are Mr. Fredrick Unopah, Frank Osumuede Edebor Esq who will serve as Secretary, Mrs. Abdallah Eugenia, Hon. Patrick Obahiagbon, Pharm. Kenny Okojie, Mrs. Lyndsey Tes-Sorae, and Hon. Abass Braimoh.

The statement from the governor’s office added, “In furtherance of the Governor’s initiative to set the State on the path of development and accountable leadership, the need to set up a State Assets Verification Committee becomes very imperative.

“Despite repeated calls for a more holistic database of the Assets and Liabilities of the previous administration, the Godwin Obaseki-led Government came up with very scanty and limited Assets and Liabilities of the State.

“In line with the Governor’s campaign promise to ensure probity, accountability and transparency in Government, and to deepen the governance process, a Committee made up of respected sons and daughters from Edo State has to be constituted.

“The committee will be inaugurated at the Festival Hall, Government House, Benin City, on Tuesday, 26th November, 2024, by 1 pm prompt.”

Edo recovers 3 Govt Vehicles, declares over 200 missing

by Folarin Kehinde November 22, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The committee set up by the Edo government to recover government assets says over 200 vehicles belonging to the state are missing.

The chairman of the committee Kelly Okungbowa shared the information with journalists in Benin City, the Edo State capital on Friday.

He said three of these vehicles have been recovered less than a day after the group was inaugurated.

Okungbowa assured the Edo people that the committee was determined to recover the missing government vehicles.

According to him, bags of rice and garri meant to be palliatives from the Federal Government for the people of the state were discovered in one of the three vehicles recovered.

Governor Monday Okpebholo had set up the committee on Thursday to recover all government vehicles said to be in private custody.

A lot of vehicles used by the past administration are missing as those in the custody of the vehicles have refused to return them. The governor deemed it fit to inaugurate us today with a mandate to recover all government vehicles in private hands,” Okungbowa said during the inauguration of the committee.

“I am the chairman while my vice is the former speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly EDHA, Rt. Hon. Victor Edoror. We have our members across the three Senatorial Districts in Edo State and we are ready to do the job, abiding by the law.

“We want to appeal to members of the public who might be aware of anyone still keeping government vehicles in their houses to please inform us to enable the committee to recover such for the Edo State Government.

“We have two weeks to carry out this task and as I speak to you, we already have some vital information regarding some persons who are still holding government vehicles. We will do the job according to the law and the State government and the people will be happy. You can reach us on 08110165121”

BREAKING: Gov Okpebholo freezes all state-owned bank accounts

by Folarin Kehinde November 14, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has ordered the immediate freezing of all state-owned accounts in commercial banks until further notice.

LEADING REPORTERS gathered that the Governor also reversed the Ministry of Roads and Bridges to the initial Ministry of Works.

A statement by Fred Itua, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, made available to newsmen on Thursday in Benin City, however, warned commercial banks, heads of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to immediately comply with the order without any delays.

Okpebholo also warned that anyone, including heads of MDAs and civil servants, who flouted the order would be severely punished.

According to him, all bank accounts in all the commercial banks have been frozen. Commercial banks must comply with the order and ensure that not a dime is taken out of the coffers of the government until further notice.

“Heads of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies must comply with this order and ensure full compliance without any further delays.

After the necessary investigations and reconciliations, the Governor will do the needful and decide on the way forward. For now, this order stands,” he said.

Meanwhile, the governor, who reverted the naming of the Ministry of Roads and Bridges to the former Ministry of Works, noted that the former was infamously conceptualized during the administration of Godwin Obaseki.

The governor added that since no bridges or good roads were constructed by the administration of Obaseki, it is therefore absurd to maintain such a name.

He, therefore, ordered all relevant government agencies to implement the new order and immediately reflect the new name.

“It is funny how you can call a government institution the Ministry of Roads and Bridges. Ironically, not a single bridge was built by the same administration. Not even a pedestrian bridge.

“In the coming days, we will look at more actions taken by the previous administration, and more decisions will be made in the best interest of the state,” he added.

“I found a dead bat on my bed” – Gov Okpebholo reveals spiritual battle before election

by Folarin Kehinde November 14, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Edo state governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo has revealed that he faced spiritual battles before his election victory.

The newly sworn-in governor made the revelation during his post-swearing-in thanksgiving service held on Wednesday night at the Dr Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.

Governor Okpebholo said: “I want to thank God. In this last election, while I was praising God, they (traducers) were busy operating from Arise. They were busy operating from Facebook. They were busy operating from Channels.

“But, I took the battle to God because I know the secret. A few days to the election, they said this guy (Okpebholo) is crazy. We gathered to praise God in this state. They said, ‘What is he doing?’ They were there at Arise. But, I was listening to the voice of God. I won the battle.

“After the election, on Sunday morning, I came to my room. I found a bat had died on my bed, without me shooting any arrow. But the spirit of God was there. The arrow of God; the hand of God delivered me.

“I am grateful to the men of God that stood in the gap. I am grateful to those that believe that with God, all things are possible. And I will give you one advice: trust in God alone because he will do it for you.”
