Trouble for Sirika as EFCC begins probe on Nigeria Air

by Folarin Kehinde February 1, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is investigating the failed Nigeria Air project inaugurated by former president Muhammadu Buhari.

The minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, disclosed this in an interview on Wednesday.

Recall that the Nigeria Air deal was sealed by Hadi Sirika, the immediate past minister of aviation, on behalf of the Nigerian government.

However, Keyamo expressed reservations about the Nigeria Air deal.

“First of all, I have said it before and I will still say it. It was not a deal that was good for Nigeria in the long run,” the minister said.

“The whole composition and totality of that deal was merely Ethiopian Air flying the Nigerian flag. It was not a national carrier. Two things. A flag carrier is different from a national carrier.

“So while we were being told that a national carrier was coming, it was not a national carrier, it was a foreign airline trying to fly the Nigerian flag.

“The EFCC is investigating that deal. There is a criminal investigation going on. I have called for the report.”

“Keyamo insisted that no local airline would be designated as a national airline, noting that “we will establish a proper national carrier,” he added.

BREAKING: EFCC exposes religious sect laundering money for terrorists

by Folarin Kehinde January 31, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has revealed that the agency has uncovered a religious sect in Nigeria allegedly laundering money for terrorists.

This was even as he revealed that another religious body was found to be protecting a money launderer after some funds suspected to have been laundered was traced to the organisation’s bank account.

The EFCC boss made the revelation on Wednesday at the Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja, during a one-day dialogue on “Youth, Religion, and the Fight against Corruption.”

He noted that religious organisations, institutions, sects, and bodies, have been found culpable of money laundering.

Olukoyede said, “A religious sect in this country had been found to be laundering money for terrorists.”

“We were able to trace some laundered money to a religious organisation, and when we approached the religious organisation about it and we were carrying out our investigation, we got a restraining order stopping us from carrying out our investigation,” he said.

Confusion in Ibadan as EFCC operatives storm college, reportedly shot student

by Folarin Kehinde October 25, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

There was confusion at Idi-Isin, Jericho, Aleshinloye Market and neighbouring areas in Ibadan on Tuesday as some operatives of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) invaded Federal College of Forestry in Ibadan.

DAILY reports that the college is located at Jericho along the Idi-Isin area in Ibadan North West local government area.

A source within the college told DAILY POST that the EFCC operatives entered the college with the intention to arrest a student who is suspected to be involved in cyber crime.

The source, who begged not to be named, added that the EFCC operatives, in the process of arresting the student, started shooting sporadically.

The source noted that some students decided to resist the move by the EFCC and in the process, a student whose name has not been revealed was shot.

He added that this led to confusion in the college and other neighbouring areas such as Idi-Isin, Jericho and Aleshinloye Market.

The source who spoke with DAILY POST on Wednesday said, “I am telling you the fact. This is the truth of the matter, but don’t mention my name. The EFCC went there to arrest one student whom they suspected to be involved in Yahoo Yahoo. But, when they want to arrest the guy, they started shooting sporadically. A student was shot. It is not good at all.”

Another staff of the college described the invasion of the college by the EFCC operatives as shameful.

They invade the college and they are shooting seriously. This is the shoot out that happened in FCF college. It is highly shameful seeing unprofessional acts being perpetrated by EFCC officials today. Shooting in an academic campus as if there’s war going on just like Hamas and Israel. I hope the management of FRIN/FCF will not sweep this under carpet.”

Public Relations Officer of the college, Mr. Kehinde Olawale, confirmed the development to DAILY POST on Wednesday.

He added that a student who was shot during the incident is still receiving treatment in the hospital.

“It is true that some people came to our college yesterday. They drove straight to the students area. The SUG President challenged them. They discovered that among those people who came were two people who wore red cloth and they wrote EFCC on it. And they carried guns.

One of the people that came said they came to investigate someone who stood in as a surety for someone. But, we don’t know the person they said they came to investigate.

“But later we said that this is not proper in an academic environment that we have many students, we told them that they need to apologise to the students, before we knew it, we just saw some of them shooting sporadically.

In the process, one of the students was shot. It has gone beyond our students, NANS has mobilised students across the country over the issue.”

Efforts made by DAILY POST get official reaction from the EFCC were not successful as of the time of filling this report on Wednesday.

Femi Falana to head EFCC Leading Reporters

Breaking: Femi Falana to head EFCC

written by Leading Reporters

President Tinubu goes on high pedestal in his anti-corruption fight

Unless anything happens to the contrary, President Ahmed Bola Tinubu has settled for the foremost Nigerian human right lawyer and good governance advocate, Barrister Femi Falana to head one of Nigeria’s  anti-corruption agencies, the Economic and Financial Crime Commission, popularly known as EFCC

A discreet villa source that does not want his name on print hinted exclusively to LeadingReporters that President Tinubu has settled for Femi Falana to head the Economic and Financial Crime Commission.  The source revealed that part of the decision is to rejig the anti-corruption agency and restore its original glory just like the days of Nuhu Ribadu.

Meanwhile the appointment of Falana into the foremost anti-corruption agency is expected to send shivers among top government functionaries, politicians and others who have perennially seen Nigeria as a cash cow to milk at will.

“The anti-corruption fight will be total.  Steps would be stepped on and trillions previously stolen would be brought back to government coffers.  Falana has the will and knows the way.  That is why he was the preferred of the President.

The source said that the choice of Falana would rekindle the anti-corruption consciousness in the country and send a positive signal to the international community that Nigeria, under President Tinubu is here for business.

“The idea is to rejig the anti-corruption stand of Nigeria.  With someone like Falana, Nigerians are going to sit up to the reality that it is not going to be business as usual.  Again, it will be a positive signal to the international community that unlike yesteryears, anti-corruption in Nigeria would not end at media noises, one-sidedness, nepotism, favouritism and godfatherism.

The source as well said that Falana emergence would help President Tinubu recover most of the stolen funds from top government functionaries, especially Buhari associates who squandered the treasury unhindered.

“Falana is known to step on toes.  It is going to be a bad time for political fraudsters and public office holders who keep stealing untamed from the government coffers.  Falana’s emergence will inhibit corruption and corruption tendencies.

Recall that Senator Ben Murray Bruce recently warned fraudsters and fraudulent public office holders to brace for tough times under President Ahmed Bola Tinubu.

EFCC Blocking Me from Presidential Screening, Okorocha Raises Alarm

by Folarin Kehinde May 24, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Former Governor of Imo State and Presidential aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Rochas Okorocha, has raised the alarm that he’s currently under siege.

Okorocha, who spoke to journalists at his Maitama residence in Abuja, called on the stakeholders in the country to prevail on the operatives of EFCC to vacate his residence.

The politician wondered why his house would be invaded on the screening day of all the Presidential aspirants of APC, saying he never received any invitation or got court summons from any quarters.

,”Frankly speaking, the situation I find myself is a situation of what I call hostage. Policemen and EFCC operatives are currently in my compound and they want to possibly whisk me away… my gate is blocked.

“All I am asking for now is to allow me to go for my screening because I am a Presidential aspirant and our election comes up on Sunday. If I am not allowed to go for this screening, I might miss it”.

”I am not an unknown person in the country. I have an address and people know me in the country. All what it takes for the EFCC is to send me an invitation and I will gladly oblige,” the lawmaker said.

Investigate N1.5 trn Fraud Against me, NIMASA Boss, Jamoh, writes EFCC

by Folarin Kehinde May 24, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) Bashir Jamoh, has written to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate an allegation of N1.5tn fraud levelled against him.

One Ude Jackson, in a tweet on Saturday, had traced N1.5tn fraud to Jamoh.

He wrote: “Fraud in Buhari govt as N1.5tn, $9bn traced to NIMASA boss, Bashir Jamoh’s personal accounts.

“Bashir Jamoh, DG of NIMASA has told his friends he doesn’t know anything about N1.5tn in any account. And that all the story is a lie and fake news. When I wake up, I will drop his receipt. He just ate the bait”, he added.

Bashir Jamoh, however, in a letter referenced NIMASA2020/DG/EFCC/VOL1/09, asked the EFCC to thoroughly investigate the allegation in order to put the record in the public space.

“I write to bring to your attention the attached online publications and tweets that have gone viral since Friday 21 of May 2021.

“The publications emanated from a series of tweets of one Jackson Ude alleging the sums of N1.5tn and another US$9,557,312.50 were traced to my personal account.

The allegation of money laundering which impugns my integrity, character and family name has been circulating on social media also suggested that the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria be invited by security agencies to give reasons why such huge sums of money were transferred to my personal account instead of the Treasury Single Account.

“In view of this weighty allegation and the insidious and perniciously damaging effect on the government and the country, I hereby request that a thorough and painstaking investigation be carried by your commission with a view to unravelling the truth or accuracy of the allegation.”

Obi Cubana: EFCC Places 5 other Young Igbo Billionaires under watchlist

by Folarin Kehinde November 16, 2021
written by Folarin Kehinde

Aside From Obi Cubana, Udemba Williams, Destiny Etiko, Other Young Igbo Billionaires May Be On EFCC Radar Watch

Information uncovered by LeadingReporters revealed that there may be no fewer than five young Igbo billionaires that are currently placed on the Economic and Financial Crime Commission EFCC watch list, aside from Obi Iyiegbu, popularly known as Obi Cubana.

Obi Cubana is currently under investigation by the anti-corruption agency over allegations of tax related crimes an money laundering.

While Obi Cubana was recently a guest in EFCC office over alleged tax related crimes and money- laundering, actor cum philanthropist, Williams Udemba, Destiny Etiko, Zubby Michael are allegedly being monitored by EFCC, according to a source who spoke to this news platform on condition of anonymity.

The source said that EFCC was surprised at the level of cash spree and ostentatious display of wealth that greeted Obi Cubana mother’s burial, among some young Igbo entrepreneurs, especially those within the entertainment industry.

The source said that such ostentatious lifestyle may influence other youths from other part of the country to resort to crime as a way of coming to social limelight.

While the source claimed that Williams Udemba has been previously invited by EFCC, he however said that the commission is not satisfied with the explanation given by Williams Udemba on how he comes about the monies with which he does his philanthropic work.

“The commission still believes that some of these guys use entertainment as a cover and may be doing other secret businesses that may be illegal to mine the millions they showcase and entice other youths with.

However, criticisms have continued to trail the anti-corruption agency, EFCC over its selective prosecution. Most Nigerian youths believe that the real criminals and culprits within the corridors of power are not unknown to EFCC.

All efforts to confirm the allegation from the anti-corruption agency was unsuccessful as at the time of filing this report.
