JUST IN: Defence HQ Announces Interim Leadership after Army Chief Lagbaja’s Absence

by Folarin Kehinde October 19, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Defence Headquarters has finally broken its silence on the absence of Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja.

The Nigerian Army, in a statement on Saturday, confirmed that he is on official leave.

The announcement comes amid speculation and concerns about a potential leadership vacuum within the Nigerian Army.

According to Maj. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations, necessary protocols have been put in place to ensure continuity. Major General Abdulsalami Ibrahim, Chief of Policy and Plans (Army), has been appointed to act on behalf of the COAS during his absence.

“Lt. Gen. Lagbaja is on official leave, and the Nigerian Army’s operations remain unaffected,” Nwachukwu said. “The service’s structured establishment and well-laid-out procedures ensure seamless continuity.”

Leading reporters reports that there were speculations about Lagbaja’s absence with some sources suggesting health issues.

However, the force has dismissed that.

Nwachukwu said, “Before proceeding on leave, necessary protocols were put in place for the Chief of Policy and Plans (Army), Major General Abdulsalami Bagudu Ibrahim, to act on behalf of the COAS while he was away.

“This is not peculiar to the NA, as there have been instances where unforeseen human frailty kept service chiefs away for about three months, and their Chiefs of Policy and Plans held sway in their absence. Claims of a leadership vacuum in the NA at present are therefore mere speculation, as all routine and scheduled activities of the service are on course.”

Nwachukwu clarified that promotions have not been stalled by Lagbaja’s absence.

He said, “Indeed, in line with its Forecast of Events for 2024, the Nigerian Army recently conducted the Captain-to-Major Practical Promotion Examination in Akure. Subsequently, and in line with extant procedures, the Commander of Training and Doctrine Command, Major General Kevin Aligbe, announced the results after due authorisation by the Chief of Policy and Plans (Army), who currently represents the Chief of Army Staff during his absence on leave and medical check-up abroad. Additionally, the Master Warrant Officer to Army Warrant Officer Promotion Exercise is currently ongoing in Jos.

“This follows a similar exercise held for Warrant Officer to Master Warrant Officer (WO-MWO) in Kaduna. The results of these exercises are expected to be released in the coming days, pending final reconciliation between the respective Corps and the Army Headquarters Department of Personnel Management.”

The force also clarified the insinuation that the COAS’s absence due to his leave has caused undue delays in the release of the WO-MWO promotion exercise results. Nwachukwu clarified that it has never been the practice for the COAS to personally sign postings or promotions for officers and soldiers in the Nigerian Army.

“The appropriate departmental chiefs perform these functions routinely.

These Departmental Chiefs, demonstrating their unwavering commitment, are fully carrying out their responsibilities in line with the COAS Command Philosophy.

“The Army Headquarters, therefore, enjoins the general public to remain confident in the NA and be assured that the service remains on top of the security situation in the country and is ever ready to defend Nigeria against any aggression on its land territory,” he added.

Troops Eliminate 96 Terrorists, Capture Kingpin Maisaje and 226 Suspects

by Folarin Kehinde October 18, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) announced significant gains in the fight against terrorism and oil theft in Nigeria, with the capture of notorious terrorist leader Usman Maisaje and 226 suspected terrorists over the past week.

Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, confirmed the operations in a statement on Friday.

“Maisaje, a close associate of high-profile terrorist Kachalla Boka, is providing invaluable intelligence, aiding troops in further operations,” Buba stated. In total, the Nigerian troops eliminated 96 terrorists during the operations.

The DHQ also reported substantial progress in the battle against oil theft, revealing the arrest of 45 suspected oil thieves.

Troops destroyed 60 illegal refining sites and recovered over 712,535 litres of stolen crude oil and 76,800 litres of illegally refined AGO, valued at approximately N712 million.

Buba elaborated on the scope of the operation, highlighting, “During this period, we rescued 157 kidnap victims and confiscated 71 weapons, including 50 AK-47 rifles and various types of ammunition.”

In the Niger Delta, troops dismantled 60 illegal refining sites and seized an array of items, including boats, drums, and vehicles.

The operations underscore the Nigerian military’s ongoing commitment to combating terrorism and oil theft and ensuring the safety and security of the nation.

With these latest developments, the DHQ remains optimistic about the continued success of its operations against criminal activities across the country.

Army denies hijack of armoured vehicles, kidnap of 150 in Sokoto

by Folarin Kehinde September 2, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Defence Headquarters has denied that bandits in Zamfara State hijacked two armoured vehicles.

It also refuted claims that a large number of civilians were killed and mass buried by terrorists, as well as reports that over 150 terrorists were kidnapped also by terrorists in Sokoto State.

The DHQ’s response was following videos that had emerged over the weekend.

In the first video, the bandits claimed they hijacked two armoured vehicles from the troops and were seen celebrating it.

In another video, terrorists were shown conducting a mass burial for citizens, while the last video claimed that over 150 residents were kidnapped in Sokoto State.

In a statement on Monday, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj Gen Edward Buba, said the videos were fake.

Explaining what happened in Zamfara, he said the two Armoured vehicles got stuck due to the swampy nature of the area while troops were trying to outflank the terrorists gathering at Kwashabawa Village.

He added that the troops demobilised the vehicles to prevent the terrorists from making use of it.

Buba said, “ On August 29, troops of OP HADARIN DAJI deployed at FOB Zurmi in Zurmi LGA of Zamfara State, embarked on fighting patrol to dislodge terror gathering at Kwashabawa Village. Troops engaged the terrorists en route to the location.

“During the fight, while attempting to outflank the terrorist. Quantity 2 of troops MRAPs got bogged down due to the swampy terrain occasioned by the rain. While troops tried to extricate the MRAPs, the terrorists massed up, knowing the challenge troops had encountered with the MRAPs.

“Subsequently, troops dismounted and demobilised the MRAPs when efforts to backload them were futile. The sad demobilization of the MRAPs by troops was to prevent it from being useful to the terrorists after abandonment. These situations further illustrate the effect of weather in changing conditions for ground operations.”

Buba also said the trending video of terrorists conducting mass burials for citizens never happened in the country.

He said, “In a related development, the attention of DHQ has been drawn to a trending video propagated from the terrorist camp. The video depicted the killing of several civilians in a mass grave. It must be noted that the incident never took place in Nigeria. Rather, it sadly took place in a nearby African country faced with terrorism. “

He stated that the rumoured abduction of citizens in Sokoto was planted by terrorists to rubbish the win recorded by troops.

Buba said, “The terrorist, in an act of desperation, tried to manipulate the situation to mislead gullible members of the public. The armed forces unequivocally state that at no time were 150 persons abducted in Gobir (Sokoto State). The rumoured abduction was deliberately planted by the terrorist to undermine troops’ winning efforts and cover up terrorist weakness.”

Buba, therefore, urged the citizens to be mindful of the antics of the terrorists, adding that the terrorists resorting to propaganda is not uncommon in war.

He said, “On the whole, the public is urged to be circumspect of the antics of the terrorist to propagate misinformation, disinformation and fake news as part of their war propaganda effort. These situations are not uncommon in war.

“The dynamic and ever-changing environment of war creates some of these experiences. Nevertheless, troops retain operational flexibility to make adjustments in achieving the strategic objective of winning the war.”
