Nigerian Ride-Hailing Drivers Protest ‘Exploitation,’, Petitions National Assembly

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 2, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON) has petitioned the National Assembly and the Lagos State House of Assembly over what it described as the continued exploitation of ride-hailing drivers by digital transport companies.

The union made its position known during a protest held on Thursday in commemoration of International Workers’ Day (May Day), which also resulted in a 24-hour suspension of ride-hailing services nationwide.

In a statement, Steven Iwindoye, spokesperson for AUATON Lagos, said the petition underscores the “poor treatment” of app-based transport workers operating under platforms such as Uber, Bolt, inDrive, Lagride, and Rida.

“For too long, we have been subjected to exploitation, insecurity, and a lack of recognition,” the statement read. “We have been paid below the cost price of premium services and forced to endure modern-day slavery in the form of technological manipulation.”

The union’s demands include the imposition of a 5 percent cap on commission rates, pricing autonomy for drivers, and formal recognition as key stakeholders in Nigeria’s transport sector.

Iwindoye warned that failure by the companies to meet these demands would lead to further action, including picketing the offices of the app operators.

“If app companies (App sharks) fail to comply, we shall massively move to new indigenous app companies that are ready and willing to comply with drivers’ demands,” he said.

He also revealed that AUATON is collaborating with other stakeholders to develop a driver-led ride-hailing platform that promotes fairer industry practices.

Bolt suspends over 5,000 drivers

by Folarin Kehinde December 7, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

Bolt, a ride-hailing company, has disclosed that it has suspended more than 5,000 drivers in the last six months due to non-compliance and safety-related issues.

The Country Manager of Bolt, Yahaya Mohammed, who revealed this at a press conference in Lagos recently, said the firm was intensifying safety measures on its platform with a dedicated focus on riders and drivers.

He noted Bolt allocated over N20m to enhance safety features, introduce advanced reporting mechanisms, and conduct driver and rider awareness programmes.

According to Mohammed, the strict compliance measures aim to ensure safety standards and result in swift consequences, including permanent suspension for non-compliant individuals.

At Bolt, the safety of all users on our platform is our top priority. We understand the trust our users place in us, and we are taking proactive steps to ensure their well-being during every ride.

Our enhanced safety measures, stricter compliance measures, coupled with technology-driven solutions, reaffirm our commitment to providing a secure and reliable transportation experience for all,” the country manager said.

He noted that Bolt remained committed to continuing to provide top-tier safety infrastructure within the transportation and mobility ecosystem.

“The company continues to permanently block drivers and riders, reported for any misconduct, from accessing the platform. These operational changes aim to amplify the safety features and trip experience of users on its platform.”

He added some of the initiatives that Bolt had undertaken to enhance quality and safety on its platform include enhanced safety measures, driver and rider awareness programs, stricter compliance measures, and advanced reporting mechanisms.

More woes for Nigerians as Bolt Increases Fare by 3%

by Folarin Kehinde December 8, 2021
written by Folarin Kehinde

Nigerians will begin to pay higher fares for using e-hailing app, Bolt Transport following the hike in fare by three per cent.

This was contained in an e-mail communication to its customers on Wednesday.

The newly introduced booking fee will begin December 8, 2021, according to the company.

With over 10,000 drivers in Nigeria, the company had increased its rates by 10 per cent in 2020 over high operation cost.

Formerly called Taxify, the company said the current increase will only affect trips of N3,000 and above.

Analysis reveals that for trips of N3,000, the sum of N90 extra charge will be paid by the user.

For rides of N4,000, the user will pay additional N120, while for trip of N5000, the user is expected to pay additional N150.

Bolt said, “At Bolt, we’re committed to making sure Bolt is the most affordable way to move around Nigeria.

“However, we also recognize changes in operating costs which can occur as we work to keep you moving around reliably, safely, and affordably.

“From December 8th, 2021, we are introducing a three per cent booking fee on all trips. This will be used to cover operational costs and allow us to continue improving features to make Bolt the best way to move around.”
