APC Speaks on Replacing Shettima As Tinubu’s Running Mate in 2027

by Folarin Kehinde April 4, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed claims that President Bola Tinubu is planning to replace Vice President Kashim Shettima ahead of the 2027 elections.

The party denied rumours of a rift between Tinubu and Shettima, describing the speculation as baseless.

This clarification comes as some of the President’s supporters and party figures begin to mobilise for his possible re-election campaign, even though he has not yet officially declared his interest in seeking a second term.

Within opposition circles, there have also been concerns that Shettima may not have enough political strength in the North to help secure a second-term victory.

Speaking to Daily Trust, APC National Director of Publicity, Bala Ibrahim, described the rumours as “baseless” and dismissed them as “pure speculation.” He further said, “Even if, for any reason, the president were to consider replacing the vice president, he cannot do so singlehandedly. Such a decision would require extensive consultation with critical stakeholders.” He added that the conversation was nothing more than “beer-parlour talks.”

Meanwhile, political stakeholders from the North Central region have renewed their demand for either the presidency or vice presidency in 2027.

Leaders from Plateau, Nasarawa, Benue, Niger, Kogi, and Kwara states met in Abuja, led by Professor Nghargbu K’tso, to advocate for the region’s inclusion at the highest level of government.

The leaders called on major political parties to zone the presidency or vice-presidency to the region. They argued that if the APC gives President Tinubu the “right of first refusal,” then the vice-presidency should be given to the North Central.

Professor Nghargbu pointed out that the North Central and South East are the only regions that have not produced a democratically elected president or vice president since the return to democracy in 1999.

He said, “This is about fairness. We want to be recognized not as mere political adjuncts but as full stakeholders in the ‘One North’ project.”

In response to these calls, Bala Ibrahim dismissed the demand as “unrealistic” and “dead on arrival.”

He argued that the North Central region has made similar demands in the past, which he described as “irrational” and politically divisive. He noted that the region’s electoral contribution does not justify such a claim, especially compared to the North West. Ibrahim said, “They have made similar demands in the past, but these are often irrational and only serve to create unnecessary political tension.”

by Folarin Kehinde March 17, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Olajide Adediran, popularly known as Jandor, the 2023 Lagos State governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has announced his return to the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Adediran, along with his supporters, announced this on Monday, at a media briefing held at Liberty Place, Adeniyi Jones Street, Ikeja, Lagos.

This comes after a closed-door meeting between Jandor and President Bola Tinubu in Aso Rock, Abuja, last week where undisclosed matters were discussed.

Before meeting Tinubu, Jandor also held talks with several political leaders, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former military President Ibrahim Babangida, former Head of State Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar and 2023 SDP Presidential Candidate, Adewole Adebayo.

Jandor previously resigned from the PDP, citing indiscipline and anti-party activities, betrayal by the party leadership on the eve of the Lagos governorship election and false claims of an alliance that misled PDP supporters into voting for another candidate.

BREAKING: El-Rufai Dumps APC, Joins SDP

by Folarin Kehinde March 10, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The immediate-past governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

This was as he joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

The former governor cited irreconcilable differences with the ruling party’s leadership as reasons for dumping the APC.

In a resignation letter submitted to his ward in Kaduna State on Monday, El-Rufai expressed disappointment with the APC’s trajectory in recent years.

“I have diligently served the APC and made my contributions to its viability as a political platform,” he stated.

“However, developments in the last two years have confirmed a troubling disregard for democratic principles and progressive values that I hold dear.”

El-Rufai, a founding member of the APC, played a key role in securing electoral victories for the party in 2015, 2019, and 2023.

Reflecting on his tenure as Kaduna governor, he highlighted his administration’s focus on human development, education, healthcare, infrastructure , job creation, and investment.

Despite his contributions, he signaled his decision to part ways with the APC due to growing concerns about governance and internal party dynamics.

“At this point in my political journey, I must seek another political platform for the pursuit of the progressive values I cherish,” he said.

Announcing his move to the SDP, El-Rufai expressed gratitude to his mentors, colleagues, and supporters, reaffirming his commitment to advancing democratic principles.

“As a member of the SDP, I am committed to fostering a unified democratic platform to challenge the APC in upcoming elections,” he declared.

He urged Nigerians who share his concerns about the country’s future to join him in building the SDP as a viable alternative, emphasizing the need to elevate Nigeria as a beacon of pride for Africa and the Black Race.

El-Rufai concluded his statement with a call for unity and progress, vowing to dedicate his efforts toward strengthening Nigeria’s democratic landscape.

The Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke has issued a directive urging all residents, including politicians, to stay away from local government secretariats to prevent further bloodshed and protect public assets.

This, he said, is in response to the violent clashes triggered by an alleged illegal takeover attempt by sacked APC chairmen and councillors.

Adeleke disclosed this in a message in he posted on his official X account on Monday evening.

“Following reports of a failed illegal takeover bid of local government councils in Osun by the sacked APC Chairmen and councillors, I hereby direct all Osun residents, including politicians across all political divides, to stay away from the local government secretariats to protect public properties and avoid further bloodshed,” the governor stated.

The directive comes as tensions remain high, with workers under the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees withdrawing their services across the state, effectively leaving the council secretariats under lock and key.

“This has become necessary, especially as the council secretariats are expected to be under lock and key due to the withdrawal of service announced by workers of the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) across the state,” he added.

Expressing grief over the casualties resulting from the crisis, the governor extended his condolences to the families of those affected.

“I equally condole families of victims of the APC illegal takeover bid and chaos unleashed across the state by the APC and their hired thugs.

“The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lost five members, with several others wounded. Two of those members are from Iragbiji, Boripe local government.

“Another two were killed at Ola Oluwa Local Government. Another one was lost at Ikire. We must stop further bloodshed,” his statement further noted.

According to the governor, in his bid to restore order and ensure safety, the governor directed security agencies to take full control of all local government secretariats.

“I have directed security agencies to take charge of all local government secretariats, and I hereby assure residents of Osun of their safety and protection of lives and properties,” he affirmed.

APC governor cancels birthday celebration, says there’s suffering in Nigeria

by Folarin Kehinde October 18, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State, who turned 65, has opted for a low-key birthday celebration, citing Nigerians’ current economic hardships.

During a live broadcast on Sparkling FM, the governor explained that he could not, in good conscience, celebrate with fanfare while citizens are struggling.

“There’s much suffering in the country due to hyperinflation,” Governor Otu remarked. “It would be insensitive to do so. That’s why it is a low-key event.”

Despite the modest celebration, Otu expressed his deep gratitude to the people of Cross River for their continued prayers and well wishes. He emphasised his commitment to alleviating the difficulties faced by his constituents and reassured them of his administration’s dedication to improving their lives.

“I have occupied many positions in this country, and in all, I have never disappointed,” he said. “So I vow that I shall not disappoint the people of Cross River State as their governor by the grace of God. There’ll be value addition.”

Looking to the future, Governor Otu announced plans to hold regular town hall meetings across the state’s three senatorial districts starting next year.

“This will enable the people to speak with me directly and ask no-holds-barred questions,” he said, adding that these engagements will strengthen his connection with the people.

Governor Otu’s decision to forego a grand celebration reflects his sensitivity to the country’s ongoing economic challenges.
