Washington-bound United Airlines flight declares emergency, returns to Lagos

by Folarin Kehinde January 24, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

A United Airlines flight, a Boeing 787-8 bound for Washington Dulles International Airport, declared an emergency mid-air on Thursday and made an air return to Lagos.

The flight, with the registration number N27903, was carrying 245 passengers, eight flight attendants, and three pilots. It departed from Murtala Muhammed International Airport but returned shortly after due to an unspecified technical issue.

Sources confirmed to Punch that the flight crew activated the emergency transponder code 7700, signalling distress to the control tower throughout its return.

The aircraft, over 13 years old, landed safely, but the shaky flight caused food and passengers’ belongings to scatter throughout the cabin. Some passengers and crew sustained minor injuries, though details remain unclear.

Videos and photos from onboard passengers show the aftermath of the turbulent flight, which they suspect was caused by an engine issue.

However, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) is expected to conduct an official investigation to determine the cause.

Micheal Achimugu, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), confirmed the incident,

“Passengers have been lodged into a hotel as stipulated by the NCAA Act,” he said.

United Airlines also issued a statement attributing the emergency to a technical issue, adding, “After landing safely, the aircraft was met by first responders to address reports of minor injuries to several passengers and crew.”

The letter read, “The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) is in receipt of the response to our letter of verification from the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) regarding your Certificate of insurance with No.40122093300118-22E in respect of your Embraer 145; the authenticity of your insurance documents and that the documents did not emanate from Consolidated Hallmark Insurance as presented to the Authority.

Air Peace, Kano Emir and Unwarranted Attacks

by Leading Reporters March 4, 2022
written by Leading Reporters

By Yushau A. Shuaib

Beyond theory, strategic communication doesn’t seek publicity in whatever ways through the media. It considers the dynamics of the environment, the target audiences, their behaviours, and trending issues for effective messaging.

Creative thinking is crucial in strategic communication, towards offering better ideas, and sound judgment in responding to issues in the most responsible manner.

Sometime in 2021, my mother was denied boarding on an Air Peace plane going from Ilorin to Abuja, even though she was among the first set of passengers who arrived at the airport very early that morning. Apart from frustrating her attempt to board the aircraft, the airline further charged her exorbitantly for the use of the same ticket for the next day’s flight.

I was so bitter that I posted her plight on Facebook. As usual, while some friends expressed concern about the situation, others had contrary views. Meanwhile, the notorious social media hecklers and agents provocateur descended on the issue on the platform, spewing their routine ethnic chauvinism and religious bigotry, while misinterpreting a simple case that could be effectively addressed by the customer care service of the airline.

Meanwhile, a few hours after my post, one Mrs Olubunmi Korede, who I later learnt was the Air Peace Manager at the airport, reached out to my siblings and later called me privately and narrated what had really transpired that day.

“We discovered that Mama came early but was on the wrong queue at a counter of another airline. By the time she realised the mistake, the Air Peace Counter had been closed. We deeply regret what happened, especially to an innocent aged mother.”

Not only that, the Manager also personally received Mama the following day at the airport and courteously processed her travel, while still offering the airline’s apologies for the incident of the previous day. That single episode influenced my loyalty to Air Peace, which then became my preferred airline on some select routes.

I also developed an interest in the business model of the owner of the airline, Allen Onyema, a Nigerian to the core, who strongly believes in a united and prosperous nation devoid of the divisive sentiments that are unfortunately attendant upon a prejudicial national outlook. During the inaugural Spokesperson’s Communication award, Air Peace, as a corporate citizen, was honoured for its nationalistic no-city-left-behind initiative, which interconnects various Nigerian cities by air, and its various citizen engagement efforts and conversations.

The expansion of its different routes across diverse national and international spaces has equally been a big relief to its teeming users, in a manner that has favourably coupled with the airline’s huge reductions of its fares to make them highly affordable. The activities of Air Peace also strengthen and enhance the economy of many of its beneficiary cities/states in the North and South, as it truly connects Nigerians in Nigeria, giving access to safe and best-in-class air connectivity.

It was, therefore, not surprising that during the faceoff between the airline and the government of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) over the discriminatory international airport slot and frequency allocation to it, the Federal Government of Nigeria stood firmly behind the Onyema-led business organisation, in supporting one’s own against injustice.

While retaliating the ill-treatment of Air Peace in Dubai, the Buhari administration also cut down on the frequency and slots allocated to Emirate Airlines in Nigeria, to mirror the stringent measures meted out to the Nigerian carrier in the Arab country. The UAE eventually capitulated to the demands of the government and rescinded its decision to deny Air Peace the stipulated number of slots and frequencies for reciprocity and fairness in the bilateral air service agreement between the two countries.

Therefore, it was quite shocking when the same airline was reported to have treated the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, unfairly by not enabling him and his entourage the opportunity of taking a connecting local flight from Lagos to Kano, after having initially created a situation that led to the delay of his international flight, on another Air Peace aircraft, from Banjul to Lagos.

The Chief Protocol Officer to the Emir Isa Bayero thereafter wrote a letter of complaint to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), seeking punitive actions against Air Peace Airline for missing their connecting flight.

The leaked letter subsequently attracted needless attacks and counterattacks between the admirers of the Emir of Kano and supporters of Air peace’s stance on the ensuing imbroglio.

It is unfortunate that many are not aware of the enviable qualities and personality of the Emir of Kano. A graduate of Mass Communication from Bayero University, the Emir had worked in the aviation sector as a spokesperson and a Flight Officer, where he earned respect as a customer-friendly, empathetic, and cultured official.

An urbane and cosmopolitan personality, whose mother was a princess of Ilorin Emirate in Kwara State, Aminu had held top traditional titles in Kano, the most populous and heterogeneous city in Nigeria, before ascending to the throne of his forebears. With friends from different backgrounds and classes, the unassuming and humble Emir has consistently demonstrated great awareness of and sensitivity in dealing with people of sundry multicultural identities and religious beliefs, which have earned him tremendous respect for his capacity to engage with diversity in a positive manner.

The so-called leaked memo from the Palace to the NCAA, which has attracted all the unnecessary bickering and unwarranted attacks, ought to have been handled more professionally and strategically from the outset of the situation.

Traditional institutions deserve respect and aides of revered personages like Emirs need to be a lot more mindful of the statements they make on behalf of their principals, particularly the tone and language of communications that could ultimately become public documents, which can either enhance or tar reputations.

On the other hand, Air Peace needs to be aware of the position it has attained as a respected national brand and not a regional enterprise that could yield to egocentric displays and stoke unnecessary controversy. The airline has grown to become a Nigerian business for Nigerians and not a parochial powerhouse that can engage in some form of chest-beating.

Sometimes silence can be golden in strategic communication. Weighing a situation very carefully before venturing a statement is essential, rather than the haste for justification that can unnecessarily escalate a crisis. Spokespersons should realise that PR is not about issuing boisterous and confrontational releases but the creation of channels of mutual understanding, in a way that strengthens and further builds relationships.

Rwandair Declared Safest Airline in Covid Management in Africa

by Leading Reporters May 27, 2021
written by Leading Reporters

RwandAir on Wednesday May 26 became the first African airline to be awarded the top Diamond status rating for COVID-19 prevention measures – the highest attainable level.

The award comes from APEX Health Safety, sponsored by SimpliFlying, for the airline’s sustained work to ensure the highest standards of cleanliness and sanitisation for its customers and crew.

The Diamond rating positions RwandAir as the safest airline in Africa and comes after RwandAir was recently announced as the first African airline to vaccinate all staff.

APEX Health Safety, powered by SimpliFlying, sets the industry benchmark for customer-centric COVID-19 certification.

It provides a scientifically-based validation system to encourage airlines to reach the highest possible standards for health and hygiene, and help restore customer confidence to fly, following the devastating impact of travel restrictions on aviation.

Each participating airline has to complete a 58-point checklist, which covers submission, verification, validation, and a quarterly review certification process.

Yvonne Manzi Makolo, CEO of RwandAir, said: “The health and safety of our customers and staffis the top priority for RwandAir, so we are delighted to be awarded Diamond status from APEX Health Safety, powered by SimpliFlying, for our COVID-19 prevention measures.

“Reaching the highest attainable level for hygiene standards is a powerful clean bill of health for the airline, and validation for all the hard work we have put in to ensure the safest possible traveller experience for our customers and staff,” she said.

She added: We know that restoring customer confidence to fly is critical to resume safe international travel, which is why we have undertaken a 360-degree approach to ensuring that every aspect of our operations meet the highest standards.

“From the deep cleaning and disinfection of aircraft, to automatic hand sanitiser dispensers available throughout Kigali International Airport, our hub, we have looked at every aspect of the customer journey to ensure we keep COVID-19 at bay and protect those who fly with us.

“Passengers are required to wear face masks throughout the flight, while our aircraft are equipped with HEPA filters to remove 99.9% of germs.

“With all of these protective measures in place, we are confident that customers will begin to fly once again, and travel safely both within Africa and internationally with RwandAir. As Rwanda’s doors are now open for tourism,we look forward to welcoming passengersfrom around the world to experience the country’s natural wonders, while staying safe and healthy.

Joe Leader, APEX CEO, said:”RwandAir has demonstrated the highest possible level of care for its customers becoming the first African airline to reach the hospital-grade Diamond level of APEX Health Safety powered by SimpliFlying’s comprehensive review.

“RwandAir proves that reaching this level of health safety does not depend upon the size of the airline, but rather the incredibly proactive steps taken for customer and staff wellbeing. We are deeply proud of RwandAir as a rising star for our entire airline industry in Africa.”

The award from APEX Health Safety, powered by SimpliFlying, gives airlines a proactive role in helping resume international travel, creates a common standard for airlines for the health and safety of passengers and highlights successful aviation industry practices.

Azman’s Air Near-Fatal Landing: Passengers Say Worn-Out Tyres May Be Responsible For The Incident

by Leading Reporters March 10, 2021
written by Leading Reporters

Some passengers onboard Azman Air Boeing 737-500 with Registration Marks SN-SYS, which left from Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja to Murtala Mohammed Airport Lagos which lost four tyres on landing on 16th of February believe that bad landing on worn-out tyres may have been the cause of the near-fatal incident involving the aircraft.

The incident happened around 5pm local time in Lagos when the airline from Abuja to Lagos began to experience landing challenges.

Azman Tyres

One of the passengers who spoke to LeadingReporters on condition that his name would not be mentioned said that he started feeling that something was wrong when the pilot kept hovering around the airport.  He said that the pilot made the first attempt at landing, but had to pull up the plane again, citing bad weather condition.

The passenger who boarded the plane said that the landing was so sudden and nerve-cracking that you would know that there was something amiss. He frowned at what he described as desperate moves by the owners of the airline to stop them from taking pictures, insisting that it infringed their right to be well informed about what happened.

LR- Azman

“Trying to force us not to take pictures was a desperate move by the airliner.  Possibly, there was something they wanted to hide. It was the height of insensitivity to treat passengers who narrowly escaped being perished the way they did.  They seemed more concerned in keeping their names than caring about the passengers.

“We thought we were not going to make it.  In fact, I started noticing that something was wrong when the pilot began to hover around the airport.  He made the first attempt at landing and suddenly pulled up the plane.  I knew something was wrong.  He announced inclement weather, but it seemed something much more than that.

LR Azman

The plane almost land-crashed.  When we were evacuated, something told me that the problem may be with the tyre.  I looked at the tyres.  I counted four burst tyres.  But beyond that, you’d notice that some of the tyres are so badly worn out before the burst.  The pictures are here to speak for themselves.

The aircraft, was said to have 49 passengers on board and 6 crew members. It had 4 burst tyres on landing on Runway 18R of Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, Nigeria.

Azman Tyres

All effort to get the management of Azman Air to address the allegations were unsuccessful as the person who spoke to our Lead Investigation Editor said he was not in a position to answer and could not link LeadingReporters to Azman Communication Department.
