France’s Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has resigned, just hours after announcing his new cabinet, throwing the French government into fresh turmoil.
According to the BBC, the Elysée Palace confirmed the surprise resignation on Monday following a one-hour meeting between Lecornu and President Emmanuel Macron.
The abrupt move comes less than a month after Lecornu was appointed to succeed François Bayrou. His cabinet lineup had faced sharp criticism from several parties in the National Assembly for retaining many of Bayrou’s ministers. Opposition lawmakers had also threatened to reject the government in an upcoming confidence vote.
Lecornu’s sudden departure leaves President Macron once again searching for a new head of government amid mounting political tension in Paris.
