JUST IN: Ex-CJN Mohammed Uwais dies at 88

Former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Mohammed Uwais, has passed away at the age of 88.

His death was confirmed on Friday by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of Ondo State, Dr Kayode Ajulo, who said the former CJN died in the early hours of the day.

Uwais served as Chief Justice of Nigeria from 1995 until his retirement in 2006. Following his tenure on the bench, he was appointed to chair the Presidential Electoral Reform Committee under the administration of the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.

The committee included notable members such as Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah and human rights advocate, Dr Olisa Agbakoba, SAN.

Funeral arrangements are yet to be made public, while tributes from across the legal, political, and civil society communities are expected in the coming days.
