S’Court affirms Ododo’s candidacy, fines Smart Adeyemi N2m

by Nelson Ugwuagbo October 24, 2023
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Supreme Court, on Monday, dismissed the appeal filed by Senator Smart Adeyemi challenging the emergence of Usman Ododo as the Kogi State governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress.

Having lost at the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal, Adeyemi had approached the apex court, but his appeal was dismissed as the Supreme Court said it lacked merit.

The court described the two issues raised in the appeal as “unreasonable, vexatious, not triable, and against the provisions of Sections 132 and 133(1) of the Evidence Act 2011.”

Justice Emmanuel Agim, in the apex court’s lead judgment, also ordered Adeyemi to pay N1m damages to each of the first and third respondents in the matter

He said, “The appellant never alleged that there was no evidence to support the findings of the two lower courts. This court has no power to revisit those issues of facts raised in the Notice of Appeal unless there is an allegation that the findings were perverse.

“On the whole, this appeal fails. The appellant shall pay the cost of N1m each to the 1st and 3rd respondents (the governorship candidate and the APC). “

The court also described as contemptuous, the practice of parties appearing on TV stations to discuss pending appeals.

He said, “You go saying on television that if the court is a court of justice, the appeal should go in your favour.”

“The court frowns at this practice. Once you’ve engaged a lawyer, go and rest.

“I am giving this elaborate talk so that you don’t go out and say things that are not reasonable.”

According to reports, no close relative of hers could be reached in the US, so her photograph was shared online as the police asked family members to pick up her corpse or it would be disposed of by the state.

The statement said; “The woman in this picture is an indigene of Anambra State. Her name is Uju Onyeyili from Abatete. She lived in Baltimore, MD and passed on last week. FUNGUS: At Least 11 Female Students Still In Captivity One Month After Kidnap

by Nelson Ugwuagbo October 23, 2023
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

At least 11 female students of the Federal University Gusau, FUGUS in Zamfara, are still in captivity following an attack on their off-campus residence in Sabon Gida Village, on September 21.

The incident perpetrated by armed men who invaded the all-female students at about 10 p.m. that day, witnessed the kidnap of at least 24 students.

Three male labourers working on a site near the hostel were also abducted by the assailants.

Although 13 female students and the three labourers were subsequently “rescued” by a Joint Task Force of security agencies led by the Military, at least 11 remain in capacity.

The School Union Government, led by Bello Aliyu said that the school could only stay hopeful while they awaited good news from the military.

Students who spoke to some newsmen echoed the same, “They keep saying the government and other security forces are trying to secure their release,” a student who did not want to be identified told

Attempts to reach the Nigerian Army and Police failed as none responded to calls and texts as of press time.

Leading Reporters gathered from security expert, Timothy Avele who described the issue of kidnapping especially in universities and schools “as a threat to national security”.

Recall that the Zamfara State government had accused the Federal Government of negotiating with the abductors of the FUGUS female students, which allegedly led to the release of the 16 rescued victims.

The FG may have denied the claims afterwards, but the accusation made headlines, given how quickly some of the students regained freedom (barely 24 hours and 72 hours respectively).

The situation stirred both praise and suspicion because it was unusual.

Reacting to why the nation’s security agencies seldom engage in rescue operations, Avele said, “Sadly, the security agencies seem to lack advanced tools and special equipment to tackle this act of terrorism.”

Another factor Avele highlighted is the need to prevent collateral damages that may result during the rescue operations considering how heavily armed these terrorists are.

“Kidnapping seems to be rising due to the gain in it, more money in it and less success in security agencies apprehending these criminals,” Avele added.

While the Dimethyl Sulfone was concealed in the hollow of a motor driving shaft going to New Zealand, the consignment of cocaine and phenacetin was packed into a bottle of body cream heading to Saudi Arabia.

In Imo State, operatives on Sunday, October 15, intercepted a Mercedes Benz container truck marked ABN 418 YN parked in an isolated area along Owerri – Onitsha expressway. A search of the abandoned truck led to the recovery of 168 bags of skunk weighing 1, 854 kilogrammes.

About 1,381.3kgs of the same substance were seized in four interdiction operations in parts of Edo State, including Ekpon community, Igueben Local Council, Iguiye forest in Ovia North East Local Council and Iruekpen, Ndokwa West, where a suspect, Monday Samuel Nwocha, was arrested and Egwalor village in Onwude Local Council where the duo of Obune Prince and Chika Obi was arrested and their Audi 80 saloon car marked BEN 406 CL loaded with Cannabis sativa, recovered.

In Kano State, an ex-convict, Aminu Suleiman, 46, was arrested along with Haruna Abdurrahaman, 41, and Ojo Joseph Esezobor, 34, at Gadar Tamburawa area of the state on Saturday, October 14, while 106kgs of cannabis were recovered from them.
