Rivers Crisis: Please Embrace Peace, Fubara Begs Lawmakers

by Nelson Ugwuagbo March 13, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has called on members of the State House of Assembly to prioritize the interests of the people and embrace peace to resolve the ongoing political impasse in the state.

Speaking on Thursday while commissioning projects in Okrika Local Government Area, Fubara emphasized the need for stability to enable effective governance.

“It is important at this stage that we all embrace peace,” he said. “The Supreme Court has made its judgment, and we have no option but to abide by it. By the special grace of God, we have started the process.”

He urged all political actors in the state to put past grievances behind them and focus on implementing the Supreme Court’s February 28, 2025, decisions.

“We are appealing to other parties: consider the interest of Rivers State. The only thing we owe this state is peace and development,” he added. “I am open any day, any time for total peace in our state because if I have to govern well, there is the need for peace.”

I’m ready to work with Peter Obi, Gov Bala Declares

by Nelson Ugwuagbo March 13, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has expressed willingness to collaborate with Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Mohammed, who also serves as the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum, made the declaration on Thursday during a courtesy visit by Obi to Bauchi.

Although the governor did not explicitly suggest a formal alliance between their parties, their discussions reportedly centered on governance, economic issues, and areas of mutual interest.

Obi arrived at the Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa International Airport in Bauchi at around 10:00 a.m., where he was received by Deputy Governor Mohammed Auwal Jatau. He was accompanied by former Minister of Finance, Senator Nenadi Usman, among others, before proceeding to the Government House for a closed-door meeting with Governor Mohammed.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Mohammed described Obi as a “foremost statesman” with deep economic expertise, political vision, and a strong commitment to good governance. He emphasized the need for unity among opposition parties to address Nigeria’s challenges.

“We in the PDP, as the chairman of my colleagues, the governors, have always admired him. We have always shown interest because behind the scenes, I have been meeting him,” Mohammed said.

“This is not the first time. In fact, I was going to meet him in Abuja, but out of his humility, he decided to come here.”

The governor acknowledged Obi’s role as a key figure in Nigeria’s opposition, stating that collaboration could help bridge political divides, strengthen governance, and address poverty and ignorance.

“As for me, I am ready to work with Peter Obi to ensure we close ranks, bring good governance to the country, and give a vibrant opposition with knowledge, vision, and sincerity,” he added.

Obi, in his remarks, described his visit as part of wider consultations aimed at addressing Nigeria’s socio-economic challenges. He stressed the importance of cooperation across party lines to drive national development.

“We must invest in critical areas to pull people out of poverty and reduce criminality. The North is a critical component if we are going to get it right in this country,” Obi stated.

He also criticized the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for what he described as a focus on trivial issues rather than addressing urgent concerns such as hunger, poverty, education, and healthcare.

“It is time to preoccupy ourselves with discussions that affect the people. That is why I am here,” Obi said.

Natasha: Senate Passes Vote Of Confidence In Akpabio’s Leadership

by Nelson Ugwuagbo March 13, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Nigerian Senate on Thursday passed a vote of confidence in the leadership of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, following recent controversies surrounding the Red Chamber.

The motion was moved by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele under Orders 40 and 51, emphasizing the need for clarity, adherence to legislative rules, and a renewed focus on governance.

The controversy stems from the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, over allegations of gross misconduct and violations of Senate rules. Akpoti-Uduaghan, who has accused Akpabio of sexual harassment, described her suspension as an injustice and reported the matter to the United Nations’ Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) on Tuesday.

However, the Senate, in a response to the IPU on Wednesday, clarified that her suspension was unrelated to the sexual harassment claims but was based on disciplinary infractions.

Speaking on the Senate floor, Bamidele acknowledged heightened public interest in the case due to the allegations but insisted that the Senate had not, at any point since August 2023, been formally notified of any sexual harassment complaints. He stated that the matter before the Senate Ethics and Privileges Committee was strictly about breaches of legislative rules.

“I want to make it clear that the matter referred to the Committee on Ethics and Privileges had nothing to do with sexual harassment. The Senate President did not preside over any case related to such allegations. What was addressed was a flagrant disregard for Senate rules, and we followed due process as guided by the Constitution,” he said.

Bamidele defended the Senate’s authority to regulate its internal affairs, including disciplinary actions such as suspensions, arguing that such measures were necessary to maintain order and legislative integrity. He dismissed claims that the Senate acted beyond its constitutional rights, stating that suspension remains a critical tool to prevent disorder within the chamber.

Regarding international reactions, Bamidele clarified that the IPU acted within its own rules and that any statements made by Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan at the IPU meeting were in a personal capacity, not as an official delegate representing Nigeria.

“We need to move past the events of the last two weeks and focus on our legislative responsibilities, including electoral reforms, economic recovery, and tax reform bills,” he added.

Addressing concerns raised by Civil Society Organizations, Bamidele acknowledged Nigeria’s ongoing challenges while urging the public to be objective in their assessments.

“We have heard you, but we need to concentrate on our work. If we choose to remain silent on this matter going forward, know that it is intentional. Please be objective in your analysis and save energy for genuine cases of sexual harassment,” he stated.

Following deliberations, the Senate passed a vote of confidence in Akpabio’s leadership, commending the handling of the situation.

Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, who presided over Thursday’s plenary session, emphasized the need for lawmakers to focus on their oversight functions, particularly in light of the recently passed budget.

He further noted that the matter is now before the courts, urging the Senate to allow the legal process to take its course.

Presidency Lambast Obasanjo for Tagging Tinubu’s Projects as ‘Wasteful’

by Folarin Kehinde March 13, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Nigerian presidency has reacted to former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s projects, dismissing his claims as baseless and misleading.

Obasanjo had condemned the N15.6 trillion Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project, calling it wasteful and corrupt.

He also criticized the Tinubu administration for approving N21 billion for a new official residence for Vice President Kashim Shettima, labelling it an unnecessary expense and a misplaced priority.

The former president made these remarks in his new book, Nigeria: Past and Future, where he analyzed the leadership styles and decisions of Nigerian leaders. The book was launched last week as part of his 88th birthday celebrations.

In response, Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Social Media, Dada Olusegun, took to X (formerly Twitter), accusing Obasanjo of hypocrisy and poor leadership during his own time in office.

“While it is common for many elder statesmen to write books aimed at sanctifying their days as the leader of the country despite obvious flaws, another elder statesman, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has just published a memoir containing claims that would further relegate his integrity as the leader who opened Nigeria to the cankerworms of corruption,” Olusegun wrote.

He accused Obasanjo of neglecting critical projects during his tenure.

He said, “By underplaying the importance of the Lagos-Calabar project in his latest book, President OBJ has not only affirmed to those who witnessed his administration’s several failures to address the needs of the country when he had the opportunity, but he has also put in written form, a position which generations to come will indeed question when the road that will end up as one of the most significant endeavors of any Federal Government in the history of the country finally becomes a reality.”

Olusegun further argued that Obasanjo failed in infrastructure development despite spending eight years in office. According to him, “It took former President Buhari just three years to deliver the first modern rail to pass through Baba’s backyard in Abeokuta. The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, one of Nigeria’s most important road projects, remained incomplete under Baba and the PDP for 16 years until Buhari completed it.”

He also referenced other abandoned projects, such as the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, which he claimed had to be inherited by Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun in 2024 because Obasanjo failed to complete it despite holding power.

“Should we delve into the corruption that brought Nigeria’s power sector to its knees despite the claims of spending billions of dollars to fix the same under his administration? Or his failure to revive our refineries, killing our steel industry, and the fraudulent privatization of NITEL, among others?” Olusegun added.

The presidential aide accused Obasanjo of being jealous of Tinubu’s leadership. His words, “Like the Sokoto-Badagry Highway and Lagos-Abuja Highway, the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road is a project that will change the economic landscape of our country for life. Former President OBJ must pretend not to be jealous of the master strategist who is rewriting the history of the southwestern presidency by fixing all that needs to be fixed across the country.”

“President Tinubu will not be deterred by distractions such as these, and believe me, Nigerians who understand development will not be distracted at this point,” he added.

Minister begs northern states to reopen schools during Ramadan

The Minister of State for Education, Suwaiba Ahmad, has called on the governments of Bauchi, Katsina, Kebbi, and Kano states to reconsider their decisions to shut down state-owned schools for the duration of Ramadan.

Speaking as a guest on Channels Television’s Political Paradigm show, Ahmad expressed concern that prolonged school closures could result in significant academic disruptions.

She emphasized the importance of maintaining the academic calendar and ensuring that students do not lose valuable learning time.

Ahmad also revealed that the Federal Ministry of Education has initiated discussions with the affected states to facilitate the reopening of schools.

However, she acknowledged that the Federal Government lacks direct control over state-owned institutions, limiting its ability to enforce any policy changes.

The closure of schools during Ramadan has sparked debate, with education stakeholders raising concerns over its potential impact on students’ academic progress.

BREAKING: Tinubu intervenes in Rivers Political Crisis, Advises Governor Fubara

by Folarin Kehinde March 11, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

President Bola Tinubu has addressed the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, revealing his efforts to restore peace both privately and publicly.

Speaking to leaders of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) on Tuesday in the presidential villa in Abuja, Tinubu said he had foreseen the current situation and urged them to return home and work for peace while upholding the rule of law.

He advised Governor Siminalayi Fubara to implement the recommendations given to him and respect the rule of law, noting that the Supreme Court remains the highest authority in the country. He also called on Niger Delta leaders to support him in achieving this goal.

The president’s remarks came after the Supreme Court upheld Martins Amaewhule as the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

In its ruling delivered on February 28, the Supreme Court ordered the Central Bank of Nigeria, the Accountant General of the Federation, and other financial institutions to withhold funds from the Rivers State government. The court accused the government of “flagrant disobedience” to judicial orders and stated that compliance with the law was necessary before funds could be released.

The decision marked a political setback for Governor Fubara, as the five-member panel of justices unanimously dismissed his cross-appeal challenging the legitimacy of the House of Assembly under Speaker Martins Amaewhule. The ruling affirmed the authority of the 27 lawmakers loyal to former Governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

Additionally, the Supreme Court nullified the recent local government elections in Rivers State, declaring them invalid due to violations of the Electoral Act.

‘Seek professional therapy’, women groups blast Natasha, apologises to Akpabio

by Folarin Kehinde March 11, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, the lawmaker representing Kogi Central has been urged to seek professional help and therapy following her outburst on the floor of the Senate two weeks ago.

The call was made on Tuesday, March 11, to Akpoti-Uduaghan by the Nigerian Women Crusade for Good Governance (NWCGG) representing 100 women groups.

The women groups led by Cecilia Ikechukwu also tendered an unreserved apology to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio over the actions of Akpoti-Uduaghan, including a asexual harassment allegation against him.

Speaking at a briefing in Abuja, Ikechukwu said the Kogi lawmaker’s action brought noting but embarrassment to Nigerian women, especially those in places of leadership.

Accusing Akpoti-Uduaghan of having a history of levelling false allegations against men in power, Ikechukwu appreciated Akpabio for his commitment to good governance and his support for women’s inclusion in politics.

She said, “We strongly urge Senator Natasha to use this time to seek professional therapy. It is evident that she is struggling with deep-seated issues that need to be addressed if she is to function properly in any leadership capacity.

“There are countless women who have served with distinction and have never stopped inspiring future generations. Women in public offices must understand that the position comes with a duty to inspire and not to embarrass. We must not allow the actions of one individual to define the collective achievements of women in leadership,” Ikechukwu added.

She also called on Nigerians across the globe to remain steadfast in their support for women in leadership positions and good governance.

Angry Redeemed Church Pastor kills wife with cutlass over adultery allegation

by Folarin Kehinde March 11, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Police operatives from the Akwa Ibom State Command have arrested a 42-year-old pastor with the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Victor Okoh.

He reportedly hacked his 38-year-old wife, Victoria Okoh, to death with a cutlass over allegation of adultery.

The incident happened on 10th March, 2025, at Effiong Essang Street, Oron Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

The pastor has been arrested and detained for interrogation for the murder.

This was disclosed by the Akwa Ibom State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Timfon John, who confirmed the arrest and stated that the suspect was in police custody while the body of the deceased had been deposited at the General Hospital morgue, where an autopsy would be conducted to aid further investigations.

The incident was said to have happened in the early hours of Monday around 5:20am.

After the killing, Pastor Okoh was said to have hidden inside the ceiling, where the police traced and arrested him.

Neighbours reported hearing a heated argument between the couple before the situation escalated to violence.

Pastor Okoh was said to have ordered his wife to leave the house and move to her parents’ residence the previous night.

However, he later called her back inside, leaving neighbours uncertain about what led to the tragic turn of events in the morning.

The suspect allegedly locked the main door and the external protector, preventing neighbours from intervening when the victim cried out for help.

Disturbed by the noise, residents gathered around the house but were unable to gain access.

The neighbours then alerted the Police, who arrived promptly at the scene.

The police forced his door open and discovered the lifeless and mutilated body of the wife.

The cutlass, which was suspected to have been used in the attack, was recovered by the police as exhibit.

The PPRO, DSP Timfon John, stated: “The Police have immediately commenced investigations into the incident. In an attempt to evade arrest, the suspect reportedly hid in the ceiling of the house but was eventually discovered and apprehended.”

The Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State, CP Baba Azare, condemned the gruesome act and assured the public that justice would be served.

He also urged residents to seek peaceful and lawful means of resolving disputes rather than resorting to violence.

The suspect will be arraigned for the alleged murder under the Criminal Laws of the State after the conclusion of investigations by the police.

BREAKING: Reps ask NCC to block all pornographic sites in Nigeria

by Folarin Kehinde March 11, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Nigerian House of Representatives has directed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), to ensure the blocking of all pornographic sites in the country.

The House wants the Commission to compel all internet service providers to block all such contents with immediate effect.

Dalhatu Tafoki, a lawmaker from Katsina State representing the All Progressives Congress (APC), sponsored the motion.

While presenting the motion, Tafoki emphasised that cyber pornography is a growing global concern and noted that Nigeria has not done enough to tackle the issue.

According to him, Nigeria is a “highly religious country” where major faiths preach against and prohibit nudity and obscenity.

The lawmaker went further to state that several countries across Asia, Africa and the Middle East had enacted laws banning pornography.

To drive home his point, the Katsina lawmaker made reference to warnings from psychologists and sociologists about the negative impact of pornography.

According to him, pornography could lead to adultery, prostitution and addiction.

“Renowned psychologists and sociologists around the world have issued stern warnings on the psychological, sociological and mental consequences of viewing pornographic content,” he said.

Tajudeen Abbas, the Speaker of the House of Representatives subjected the motion to a voice vote where the lawmakers voted in support of it.

The House directed the NCC to impose penalties on service providers that fail to comply with the directive.
