International Backlash as Trump Imposes 25% Tariffs on Imported Vehicles

by Nelson Ugwuagbo March 27, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

World powers on Thursday condemned U.S. President Donald Trump decision to impose steep tariffs on imported vehicles and car parts, warning of retaliatory measures as trade tensions escalate.

Germany, a major car exporter, called for a strong response from the European Union, while Japan stated it would “consider all options” in reaction to the tariffs.

Stock markets across Asia and Europe declined sharply, with leading automakers such as Toyota, Hyundai, and Mercedes experiencing significant losses.

The U.S. tariffs, set to take effect at 12:01 a.m. (0401 GMT) on April 3, will apply to foreign-made cars and light trucks, with key automobile parts also facing duties later in the month.

“What we’re going to be doing is a 25 percent tariff on all cars that are not made in the United States. If they’re made in the United States, it is absolutely no tariff,” Trump announced at the White House.

French Finance Minister Eric Lombard criticized the move as “hostile,” stating that the European Union’s only response would be to raise tariffs on American products.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he had convened a meeting to discuss the country’s trade options in light of the new tariffs.

Amid growing warnings of retaliation from Washington’s key trading partners, Trump escalated his threats.

“If the European Union works with Canada in order to do economic harm to the USA, large-scale tariffs, far larger than currently planned, will be placed on them both in order to protect the best friend that each of those two countries has ever had!” Trump posted on his TruthSocial platform.

Reps Make U-Turn On Bill To Remove Immunity Enjoyed By VP, Govs, Deputies

by Nelson Ugwuagbo March 27, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The House of Representatives has reversed its decision on the second reading of a bill seeking to remove the immunity granted to the vice president, state governors, and their deputies.

The bill, which was introduced to address corruption, eliminate impunity, and enhance accountability in public office, was withdrawn from the second reading to allow further debate on specific provisions.

Similarly, the House also rescinded its decision on a bill proposing the abolition of the death penalty.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, 42 constitutional amendment bills passed the second reading in the House, including the bill to revoke immunity for the vice president, governors, and their deputies.

On Thursday, the House passed the second reading of a bill seeking to amend the 1999 Constitution to establish the office of the Prime Minister as head of government and the President as head of state. The bill also outlines the framework for the election of both offices.

Additionally, 32 constitutional amendment bills passed the second reading on the same day, including a bill to amend the 1999 Constitution to allocate specific seats for women in the National Assembly and state houses of assembly.

Ikwerre Congress Urges Tinubu to Reconcile Wike, Fubara Feud

by Nelson Ugwuagbo March 27, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Ikwerre People’s Congress (IPC) Worldwide has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to establish a high-powered committee to mediate in the ongoing political crisis between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Livingstone Wechie; Vice-Chairman, Ihunwo Obi-Wali; and Secretary-General, Stanley Nworgu, the group urged the president to appoint eminent leaders and stakeholders to the committee to restore democratic order in the state.

“This is with a view to immediately restoring democratic order in Rivers State in the best interest of Nigeria and for the better legacy of President Bola Tinubu,” the statement read.

Expressing concern over what it described as the dismantling of democratic structures in Rivers, the IPC warned that the situation was tarnishing the state’s image.

“The message of Mr. President has been passed through his intervention, but Rivers people must not suffer a short-lived democracy for any reason. We have paid our dues despite this political imbroglio,” the group stated.

The IPC also voiced disagreement with the suspension of the governor and the state House of Assembly, questioning its constitutional justification.

“We believe that Mr. President is motivated by the aspirations of Nigerians and is committed to resolving rather than escalating the crisis. This unfortunate development was not anticipated, and innocent Rivers residents should not bear the brunt,” the statement added.

The group further lamented the negative impact of the crisis, citing capital flight, uncertainty among citizens, and loss of investor confidence.

“As a people, we are unhappy with the unwarranted political feud between both sides. Ikwerre people are particularly concerned about the false image now associated with our state,” the IPC said.

It called for the restoration of democratic rights in Rivers to ensure governance remains accountable to the people.

“All we want is a government we can call our own,” the statement concluded.

written by Folarin Kehinde

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, Pastor E. A. Adeboye, has distanced himself from a viral video advertising a drug.

A Facebook advert campaign, featuring an alleged image of the clergyman, had circulated online.

One of the video clips, posted via the handle ‘Africa Health Centre’, depicted Adeboye advertising a “unique remedy for prostatitis”.

In response, Adeboye released a statement on his Facebook page, clarifying that the motion picture was AI-generated, and urged the general public to disregard it.

The statement reads: “I have been made aware of disturbing AI-generated videos circulating online, falsely advertising certain drugs and scholarships, intended to deceive and mislead people.

“These videos are NOT from me, and I want to make it clear that I have no involvement in such promotions. I urge all of you, my dear brothers and sisters in Christ, to be vigilant and not fall for these fraudulent schemes.

They are designed to exploit your trust for selfish gain. Please do not share or engage with these posts.

“I encourage you to report these fake accounts and videos immediately on all social media platforms. Together, we can ensure that such deception does not spread further.

“These malicious acts by ‘Africa Health Centre’ and ‘Church-Funded Scholarships’ are already being dealt with by the relevant authorities, as we will not allow God’s name to be used in vain for such wickedness. Let us continue to stay in the truth, walk in love, and remain focused on the genuine work of the Kingdom.”

by Folarin Kehinde March 26, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

President Bola Tinubu has signed the South-West and South-South Development Commission bills into law.

The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, made the announcement during plenary on Wednesday.

“No mechanism is too much to trickle down development and dividends of democracy to the grassroots.

“I am sure that with these development commissions, the impact of this administration will be felt by the grassroots.

“We thank Mr president for completing it to the entire geo-political zones,” Kalu said.

During Tuesday’s plenary, Senate President Godswill Akpabio confirmed that the President has signed the South-West Development Commission Bill and South-South Development Commission Bill into law.

“Just to inform distinguished senators that Mr President has assented to the remaining regional development bills, the South-west Development Commission Bill and the South-south Development Commission Bill. We now have all the developmental commissions legally in existence,” Akpabio said.

Akpabio expressed appreciation to Tinubu for his cooperation with the National Assembly and for signing the bills establishing the commissions into law.

He said the commissions would create more jobs for Nigerians and facilitate grassroots development.

“We thank the president. We are grateful for his cooperation. We are grateful for creating jobs. We are also grateful to have taken development to the grassroots level,” he added.

The established regional commissions are tasked with enhancing infrastructure, economic growth, and social welfare within their respective regions.

“Na Your Mama Be This” – Students Disgrace Tinubu’s Wife, Remi, in Delta State

by Folarin Kehinde March 26, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Students of the Delta State School of Nursing, Agbor, openly rejected an attempt to hail Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Remi Tinubu, during her visit to the institution.

The incident occurred on Tuesday when Remi Tinubu visited Delta State as part of her advocacy for free treatment programs for HIV/AIDS patients across the country.

During her address to the Delta State Traditional Rulers Council in Asaba, she spoke about the impact of HIV/AIDS, particularly among young people. She urged traditional rulers to raise awareness and support health initiatives, including the fight against female genital mutilation.

However, a viral video from the event captured a moment when the Master of Ceremony (MC) tried to lead the audience in a song praising the First Lady.

He sang, “Na my mama be this o, we no get another one.”

In response, the students replied, “Na your mama be this ooooo.”

The incident has drawn attention online, with many linking it to growing dissatisfaction with the federal government.

President Bola Tinubu has faced criticism over economic policies such as the removal of fuel subsidy and the floating of the naira, which many believe have worsened economic hardship in the country.
