Coalition Petitions African Union Over State of Emergency in Rivers

by Nelson Ugwuagbo April 1, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

A coalition of Nigerian professionals and political figures has petitioned the African Union (AU) over the recent declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, describing the suspension of Governor Siminilayi Fubara and the State House of Assembly as unconstitutional.

In a letter addressed to AU Commission Chairperson Alhaji Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, the group argued that the action violated Nigeria’s constitution and posed a threat to democracy in Africa.

The petition, signed by Professor Senator Opeyemi Ola, Professor Adah George, Rt. Hon. Dr. James Oloko, and Dr. Mrs. Evelyn E. Ogolime, urged the AU to intervene, calling the move an abuse of power.

“With President Tinubu as the Chairman of ECOWAS, Nigeria is expected to uphold democratic governance. His decision to suspend the democratically elected Governor of Rivers State and the State House of Assembly is a violation of the Constitution and an affront to democratic principles,” the petition stated.

The coalition cited Section 305 of the Constitution, which the President referenced, arguing that it does not grant him the power to suspend or remove elected officials. They insisted that the process for removing a governor is explicitly outlined in Section 188, making the President’s action unconstitutional.

Describing the move as a threat to democracy, the group warned that it could set a dangerous precedent for the suppression of democratic institutions across Africa.

The coalition further called on the AU to send a fact-finding mission to Rivers State to assess the situation and ensure democratic institutions were protected.

“We urge you to prevail upon President Tinubu to lift the State of Emergency in Rivers State and restore the democratically elected government. The AU Commission must take concrete steps to ensure that Nigeria, as a member state, upholds the principles of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law,” the petition added.

Hold Akpabio, Bello, Ododo responsible if anything happens to me – Natasha

by Folarin Kehinde April 1, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The lawmaker representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, on Tuesday, urged Nigerians to hold Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Kogi State Governor Ahmed Ododo and his predecessor, Yahaya Bello, responsible if she and her supporters are attacked.

Akpoti-Uduaghan raised the alarm in a post via her official Facebook.

She said, “My dear people of Kogi Central, I look forward to our peaceful Sallah celebrations today.

“However, should we be met with or infiltrated by violence, Nigerians should hold Gov Òdodo, Yahaya Bello & SP Godswill Akpabio wholly responsible.”

Her warning comes a few hours after she vowed in a statement to go ahead with her scheduled visit to her constituency for the Eid-el-Fìtr break and the rally planned for her homecoming.

The senator also urged her supporters to disregard speculations making the round that she has cancelled her scheduled visit.

While stating that she has a statutory function in her capacity as the lawmaker representing her constituents, the embattled senator encouraged her supporters to troop out en masse to celebrate the Eid-el-Fitr with her.

On Monday, the Kogi State Government banned rallies and public gatherings in the state over ‘security reports’.

The government also stopped fishing and other activities, arguing that they recently resulted in the loss of two lives in Kasemiya, Katubo and Umozu Ette, all in Kogi Local Government Area in Kogi West.

The Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo said the move was to prevent any form of security breach.

As of the time of filing this story, one of the Kogi senators named, Bashir Haroon, shared a live feed showing hundreds of Akpoti-Uduaghan’s supporters, comprising mainly women singing and drumming in anticipation of her return.

POLITICS NIGERIA previously reported that a large crowd of supporters had gathered in anticipation of her arrival, holding placards and chanting slogans in solidarity with the senator.

The senator had on Tuesday morning warned that Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo, and former Governor Yahaya Bello should be held responsible if any violence disrupts the Sallah celebrations.

“My dear people of Kogi Central, I look forward to our PEACEFUL Sallah celebrations today. However, should we be met with or infiltrated by violence, Nigerians should hold Gov Ododo, Yahaya Bello & SP Godswill Akpabio wholly responsible,” she wrote on her verified Facebook page.Nigerian cultural tours

Despite calls from the police to cancel the rally, Akpoti-Uduaghan remained firm in her decision to meet with her constituents. She dismissed rumours of a canceled trip and urged her supporters to disregard misinformation.

The senator, a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is currently serving a six-month suspension from the Senate for allegedly violating legislative rules. Additionally, she faces a potential recall, allegedly backed by figures from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Akpoti-Uduaghan has been at the center of several controversies, including a recent accusation against Akpabio of sexual harassment.

NSIA Records N1.86 Trillion in Profit

by Nelson Ugwuagbo April 1, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) has reported an operating profit of N1.86 trillion for the 2024 financial year, representing a 59 percent increase from the N1.17 trillion recorded in 2023.

In a statement on Tuesday, Joyce Onyegbula, NSIA’s head of corporate communications, attributed the performance to the resilience of the authority’s investment strategy, strong earnings, a diversified revenue base, and robust risk management despite global economic challenges.

“NSIA has remained profitable for 12 consecutive years, resulting in cumulative retained earnings of N3.74 trillion at the end of 2024,” Onyegbula said.

She noted that total operating profits, excluding earnings from associates and joint ventures, rose from N1.17 trillion in 2023 to N1.86 trillion in 2024. The increase was driven by the strong performance of NSIA’s diversified investment portfolio, infrastructure assets, and gains from foreign exchange movements and derivative valuations.

According to Onyegbula, total comprehensive income—including profits from associates and joint ventures—stood at N1.89 trillion in 2024, reflecting a 59 percent increase from N1.18 trillion in the previous year.

Core total comprehensive income, excluding foreign exchange and derivative valuation gains, surged by 148 percent to N407.9 billion in 2024, up from N164.7 billion in 2023. The rise was supported by robust returns on financial assets measured at fair value, including collateralized securities, private equity, hedge funds, and exchange-traded funds.

NSIA further reported that net assets nearly doubled, increasing by 96 percent to N4.35 trillion as of December 2024, compared to N2.22 trillion in December 2023.

Commenting on the results, NSIA Chief Executive Officer Aminu Umar-Sadiq described the financial performance as “outstanding,” emphasizing the strength of the authority’s strategic vision, disciplined execution, and commitment to sustainable socio-economic growth.

“By leveraging innovation, strategic partnerships, and sound risk management, we have not only delivered strong returns but also created value for our stakeholders,” Umar-Sadiq said.

Emir Sanusi II Defies Police Ban, Leads Hawan Nasarawa Durbar Procession

by Folarin Kehinde April 1, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II, has led the traditional Hawan Nasarawa Durbar despite a police ban on the event. The historic procession, a key part of Kano’s rich cultural heritage, took place amid heightened tensions.

The police had earlier prohibited the Durbar, citing security concerns, but Emir Sanusi II proceeded with the revered tradition, drawing massive public support.

Traditionally, the event features the Emir and his entourage riding on horseback in a grand procession from his palace to the Government House to pay homage to the governor.

Held on the third day of Shawwal, Hawan Nasarawa is a significant highlight of Eid celebrations in Kano.

However, this year, Kano State Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Bakori issued a ban on all durbar activities, citing security threats.

In response, Emir Sanusi II opted to conduct the Hawan Nasarawa in a motorcade rather than the usual horseback procession.

The Emir, accompanied by his entourage, departed the palace in a grand motorcade and proceeded to the Government House, where Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf received him, maintaining the longstanding tradition.

Notably, this year’s event also saw a deviation from the usual route traditionally taken during the procession.

Despite these changes, the Emir’s motorcade was cheered on by a joyous crowd as it made its way to the Government House.

Police Warn Senator Natasha Against Returning Home

by Folarin Kehinde April 1, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The police have asked Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduagan to cancel her planned Sallah rally in the Central Senatorial district of Kogi State.

The State Commissioner of Police, Miller Dantawaye made this known on Tuesday in a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP William Aya.

According to the statement, the Kogi police boss said the rally is against the proclamation on ban on political gathering by the state government issued on Monday.

The statement said, “Following the intelligence report on security threats in Kogi State and the subsequent ban on all forms of Rally and procession by the Kogi State Government, the Nigeria Police Force, Kogi State Police Command has called on the organisers of planned rally at Okene to cancel such event in the interest of the peace in Kogi State.

“The call for cancellation becomes necessary, noting that intelligence reveals that some hoodlums plan to hijack the process and cause disturbance of peace in the State. The Command cannot afford to jeopardize the existing peace the State is currently enjoying.

Despite the Monday proclamation by the state government banning political gathering or rallies, Akpoti-Uduaghan has vowed to continue with her “homecoming”, adding that she’s only coming to the state to celebrate Eid Fitr with her constituents.

Uromi Residents Flee Town Amid Fears of Reprisal and Arrest

by Folarin Kehinde April 1, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Communities around Old Ilushi Road, Opere, and Good Will Junction in Uromi, Edo State, have been deserted by residents for fear of reprisals and arrests by security agents, following the lynching of 16 travellers by a mob in the area last Thursday.

This came as Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State yesterday in Kano State, assured that justice will prevail for those killed in the mob attack.

He also visited the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin (APC, Kano North), where he said the 14 suspects so far arrested in connection with the killings, would soon be moved to Abuja for further interrogation.

This is even as the Arewa Consultative Forum, AFC, called for an independent judicial panel to investigate the killings.

Vanguard gathered that residents of Uromi and environs have also stopped going to their farms, with many seeking refuge in neighbouring towns.

Some residents who spoke with Vanguard shared circumstances that led to the mob action.

A resident who simply gave his name as Monday, said: “The vigilante group received information from areas on the stretch of Old Ilushi road, from where the travellers were coming, that they had weapons in their vehicle.

‘’When they arrived in Uromi, the vigilantes asked them to step down, but the travellers refused, leading to an altercation. One of them pulled out a knife, prompting the vigilantes to raise alarm, accusing them of being kidnappers.

“Nobody justified the action. However, those who took part in the mob action have fled, while innocent individuals have been arrested.

Orumba North Demands National Honour for Late Prof. Humphrey Nwosu

by Nelson Ugwuagbo March 31, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The people of Orumba North Local Government Area, Anambra State, have urged the Federal Government to confer a national honour on the late Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, former Chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC), in recognition of his contributions to Nigeria’s democracy.

The call was made by the council’s Chairman, retired Capt. Casmier Nwafor, during a commendation service organized in honour of the late electoral reformer. Nwafor emphasized that without such recognition, the significance of June 12, 1993, would hold little meaning for the people of Orumba North.

The council insisted that immortalizing Prof. Nwosu is essential and urged the Federal Government to act without delay. They specifically appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the National Assembly to take concrete steps to ensure his name is permanently inscribed in Nigeria’s democratic history.

As part of local efforts to honour him, the Orumba North Local Government unveiled a portrait of Prof. Nwosu at its secretariat and announced that the building would be renamed the “Prof. Sir Humphrey Nwosu Building.”

The council further urged the National Assembly to recognize Prof. Nwosu’s contributions, noting that ongoing debates over his immortalization have caused emotional distress among Nigerians who cherish the June 12 election. They called on lawmakers to reconsider their stance and bestow upon him the honour he rightfully deserves as Nigeria’s “Hero of Democracy.”

Prof. Nwosu was widely acknowledged for introducing the Option A4 voting system, which enhanced transparency and credibility in Nigeria’s electoral process.

The council also commended Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo for supporting efforts to give Prof. Nwosu a befitting burial, stressing that a national honour would be a fitting tribute to his legacy.

Prof. Nwosu, who oversaw the historic June 12, 1993, presidential election, was laid to rest last Friday. The burial was attended by notable dignitaries, including Governor Soludo and Mr. Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the last general election.
