by Nelson Ugwuagbo April 23, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Federal Government has released N50 billion to the academic and non-academic staff unions of federal universities for the payment of earned allowances.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa, made this known on Wednesday in a statement issued by the Director of Press at the Federal Ministry of Education, Folasade Boriowo.

The release of funds follows a promise made by President Bola Tinubu and is part of efforts to address long-standing demands by university unions.

According to the statement, the disbursement reaffirms the administration’s commitment to prioritising education and supporting the transition from a resource-based to a knowledge-driven economy through investments in education, infrastructure, and human capital.

“This intervention is not just a financial transaction—it is a reaffirmation of our President’s belief in the capacity of Nigerian youth and the invaluable role that academic and non-academic staff play in nurturing them,” the Minister said.

NNPC Shipping Partners Stena Bulk, Caverton to Establish Regional Tanker Fleet

by Nelson Ugwuagbo April 22, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

NNPC Shipping, a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), has entered into a strategic partnership with Stena Bulk and Caverton Marine Limited to enhance maritime transportation efficiency across West Africa through the establishment of a new tanker fleet.

The agreement, signed last week in London, aims to launch a joint tanker operation focused on transporting crude oil, refined petroleum products, and liquefied natural gas (LNG) within the region. The initiative is expected to bolster Nigeria’s energy supply chain and improve logistics capacity across West Africa.

According to the parties, the joint venture will provide high-quality and efficient maritime transport services. The operation will involve a combination of new and existing vessels, with decisions guided by market trends and commercial viability. The partners also plan to explore vessel acquisitions and long-term charter arrangements, while upholding high standards of safety, sustainability, and cost efficiency.

Managing Director of NNPC Shipping, Panos Gliatis, stated that the new fleet will primarily support NNPCL’s logistics needs for crude oil, clean products, and LNG/LPG. He described the venture as a significant step in modernizing Nigeria’s maritime infrastructure and strengthening the country’s role in global energy logistics.

“This partnership brings together NNPC Shipping’s expertise with Stena Bulk’s global experience and Caverton’s local knowledge, creating a strong platform to serve oil producers and traders across the region,” Gliatis said.

President and CEO of Stena Bulk, Erik Hanell, expressed enthusiasm over the company’s expansion into a key growth market, noting the alignment with Nigeria’s energy sector transformation and Stena Bulk’s commitment to operational excellence and sustainability.

Also speaking, CEO of Caverton Offshore Support Group, Bode Makanjuola, described the collaboration as a milestone in boosting Nigeria’s maritime capabilities. He emphasized that the blend of local insight and international best practices would benefit Nigeria and the wider sub-Saharan Africa region.

The joint venture is expected to support Nigeria’s long-term economic growth by enhancing energy logistics and strengthening the country’s maritime operations.

Insecurity: Niger Government impose curfew in Minna

by Nelson Ugwuagbo April 22, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Governor Umaru Mohammed Bago of Niger State has imposed a nightly curfew in Minna, the state capital, effective immediately.

The curfew, which restricts movement from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., was announced Tuesday during a security summit at the Government House attended by traditional rulers and heads of security agencies.

Under the new order, commercial motorcycle and tricycle operators are barred from operating during curfew hours, though medical emergencies are exempt.

The measure is intended to stem a recent surge in attacks and killings across the city.

Governor Bago affirmed that his administration will not tolerate violence against innocent citizens. He further instructed district, village, and ward leaders to begin formally documenting all visitors.

Any residence found sheltering suspected criminals or drug traffickers will be demolished, he warned.

Tinubu to meet service chiefs over rising killings

by Folarin Kehinde April 22, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

President Bola Tinubu is planning to meet with the service chiefs to discuss the rising killings in Plateau, Benue and other parts of the country on his return to Abuja from his two-week working visit to Paris, the French capital.

Tinubu returned to Abuja on Monday night after spending 18 days on a working visit and retreat in Paris and London.

The Air Force 001 aircraft conveying the President landed at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja at 09:50pm on Monday, the State House media office announced.

Since April 2, when he travelled, more than 120 locals have been killed by armed assailants.

Several homes have been burnt and 3,000 persons displaced despite the deployment of security forces.

On Monday, a top functionary privy to the development confirmed to The PUNCH that the security meeting would review the rising violence and the measures to contain it.

“The President will certainly meet the service chiefs to review the security situation across the country and the flash point of Plateau, Benue and Borno. He has been getting security briefings while away and giving directives to the security chiefs. So, he will meet his security chiefs and ministers too,’’ he affirmed.

This came as the Presidency blamed state governors for the mounting cases of killings nationwide, especially the recent incidences in Plateau, Benue and Enugu States.

It cited the governors’ poor funding of security outfits in their states despite receiving humongous security votes.

Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, stated this when he appeared on TVC’s Beyond the Headlines show with Nifemi Oguntoye Monday evening.

Bwala said, “What we are finding, very sadly, is that there are some states where the governors give N20m to the SSS, N20m to the police, and N20m to the army as monthly allocation for fighting insecurity. And you hear their security vote is between N1bn, N2bn and N3bn. Where are we going?”

A cross-section of stakeholders in Plateau agreed that self-defence is a necessary measure given the current security situation.

A security officer, Jackson Dauda, stated, “I believe that self-defence is a legitimate means of protecting lives and property. There is no better time to apply this than now in Plateau State, given the number of lives we have lost through attacks.

“This is important, especially given the rise of terrorist groups like Mahmuda, which has been terrorising rural communities in the North Central region. So, what is left is for the government to give the needed support to the local communities to enable them to defend themselves against any form of terrorism.”
