Frozen Fish, Pepper, and Tomatoes Price Increase over 100% in Lagos

by Nelson Ugwuagbo April 17, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Residents of Lagos experienced sharp fluctuations in food prices in April 2025, with increases in the cost of essential items reflecting the broader inflationary pressures across Nigeria.

According to the latest Nairametrics Food Price Survey conducted across four major markets—Mile 12, Mushin, Daleko, and Oyingbo—prices of key staples such as frozen fish, pepper, and tomatoes surged by over 100%, compounding the strain on household budgets.

In contrast, the survey recorded price declines in both local and foreign rice varieties, offering slight relief to consumers. However, the overall market landscape remained volatile, with several items registering double-digit price hikes.

The report attributes the rising food costs to multiple factors, including disruptions in supply chains, increased transportation expenses, adverse weather affecting harvests, and insecurity in major food-producing regions.

The April 2025 snapshot of the Lagos food market underscored a climate of extremes, as residents navigated unpredictable price movements across critical commodities.

by Folarin Kehinde April 17, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Unknown hoodlums wielding cutlasses and firearms have reportedly attacked the family residence of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, in Obeiba-Ihima area, Okehi Local Government Area of Kogi State.

Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency expert focused on the Lake Chad region, disclosed this in a post on his X handle on Thursday.

Makama said intelligence sources told him that the Chief Security Officer to the Senator, Yakubu Ovanja, reported the incident to security authorities.

According to the security expert, Ovanja revealed that the attack occurred around 1:00 a.m. and involved at least three armed individuals who vandalized the building, including shattering window panes.

“Following a distress alert, a team of security operatives from Okehi Division swiftly mobilized to the scene. While no casualties were reported and no arrests have been made, the premises were documented and preliminary investigations have commenced.

“Police sources said the motive behind the attack remains unknown as investigations continue,” Makama said.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, a prominent political figure in Kogi Central Senatorial District, has not issued a public statement as of press time.

Foreign Affairs Minister Visits Niamey to Renew Nigeria-Niger Relations

by Nelson Ugwuagbo April 17, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, has embarked on a working visit to Niamey, the capital of the Niger Republic, amid ongoing diplomatic tensions between Nigeria and its northern neighbour.

Tuggar was received by his Nigerien counterpart, Bakary Sangaré. The visit was confirmed in a statement posted on Thursday via the minister’s official X handle.

“Rebuilding trust and fostering regional stability remain central to Nigeria’s diplomatic efforts,” the minister said.

He noted that the visit aimed to renew bilateral ties and enhance cooperation in areas such as security, trade, and energy. Tuggar also disclosed that discussions covered shared concerns including migration management, the fight against desertification, and the revitalisation of the Nigeria-Niger Joint Commission (NNJC).

“Nigeria and Niger remain united in their commitment to advancing regional peace and development,” he added.

Relations between Nigeria and Niger have been tense since the July 2023 military coup in Niger. Following the coup, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), led by Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, imposed strict sanctions on Niger and demanded a return to constitutional rule, including threats of military intervention.

These actions led to a deterioration in diplomatic ties, including border closures and the suspension of joint initiatives.

Tensions escalated further last month when the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), comprising Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso introduced a 0.5% import duty on goods from ECOWAS member states, deepening the rift within the region.

Nigerian Military Decries Low Registration of South East Youths in Recruitment

by Nelson Ugwuagbo April 17, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Leader of the Army Force Headquarters Recruitment Sensitisation Team in Anambra State, Brigadier General Chima Ekeator, has revealed that only 200 youths from the South-East have registered for the ongoing Nigerian Army recruitment exercise.

Ekeator made the disclosure during a sensitisation programme held for youth leaders and President-Generals of various communities in the state.

He expressed concern over the low turnout from the region compared to other parts of the country, where no fewer than 4,000 applicants have registered per state.

“This sensitisation is necessary because, according to records, only 200 persons have registered from the South-East, while in other states, not less than 4,000 persons have registered,” Ekeator said.

He urged youth leaders and community heads to return to their respective communities and mobilise more young people to participate in the exercise.

“Increased youth participation will enhance the representation of the South-East in the force, ensuring that the region’s quota is fully utilised,” he added.

Governor Peter Mbah Pledges to Immortalise Late Football Legend Christian Chukwu

by Nelson Ugwuagbo April 17, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has pledged to immortalise former Nigerian footballer and coach, Christian Chukwu, who passed away at the age of 74.

Chukwu, a former captain and coach of both Enugu Rangers and the Super Eagles, died on Saturday at the Niger Foundation Hospital in Enugu.

During a condolence visit to the late football icon’s family in Enugu on Thursday, Governor Mbah assured them of the state government’s support, describing Chukwu as a national legend who inspired millions of young people through his dedication and achievements in football.

“We have come here to commiserate with the family and also to express our devastation,” the governor told reporters after signing the condolence register. “His death is not just a loss to the family alone; it is a loss to all of us, particularly the government and people of Enugu State.”

He described Chukwu, fondly known as “Chairman,” as a household name and a symbol of excellence in global sports. Mbah said the government and the people of Enugu are united in mourning his passing and will stand by the family during this period of grief.

“We are going to be with them all through this period. This loss is our collective loss,” he said, adding that plans are underway to immortalise the late football legend.

The governor also prayed for the peaceful repose of Chukwu’s soul and strength for the family to bear the loss.

He was accompanied on the visit by the Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Uchenna Ugwu, and the Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development, Lloyd Ekweremadu.

Farouk Aliyu Dismisses Rumours of CPC Bloc Exit from APC

by Nelson Ugwuagbo April 17, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Farouk Aliyu, a close ally of former President Muhammadu Buhari, has refuted claims that the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) bloc within the All Progressives Congress (APC) is planning to exit the ruling party.

Speaking on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme aired on Wednesday, Aliyu, a former Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, dismissed the speculations, stating that the CPC remains firmly rooted within the APC.

“It’s not true; there is nothing like members of the defunct CPC wanting to move out of APC,” he said. “Our certificate, the certificate of CPC, was part of what formed APC. So, how can we leave? To go where? This is our party.”

Aliyu, who described himself as a member of Buhari’s inner circle, also addressed the recent defection of former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, to the Social Democratic Party (SDP). He said former President Buhari did not endorse El-Rufai’s move, adding that the former governor should not seek to destabilise the party due to his exclusion from the ministerial list.

He further called on the APC leadership to strengthen internal engagement with all party blocs to reduce internal conflict ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“Politics is about engagement. Politics is about the interests of groups, people, and so on. That is what we are saying: engage more—not only with people from the defunct CPC, but even from the PDP. So that in 2027, there will be less competition,” Aliyu stated.

On the opposition’s coalition, he said the APC would not allow the alliance led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to unseat the party in 2027. “They are strange bedfellows,” he said, expressing confidence that the selection of a presidential candidate would destabilise the Atiku-led coalition.

“It’s now compulsory” Jigawa Govt mandates Hijab wear for female security operatives

by Folarin Kehinde April 16, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Jigawa State Government has made a significant decision regarding the attire of female security operatives in the state.

According to a recent announcement, the government has directed three private security firms operating in the state to allow their female workers to wear hijabs while on duty.

This was announced by the State Executive Council through the Commissioner of Information, Sagir Musa, while briefing newsmen on the resolutions of the Council’s meeting held on Tuesday evening at the Press Gallery, Government House, Dutse, the state capital.

He stated that the directive is part of the government’s efforts to provide an inclusive and enabling environment for all citizens, particularly women.

By allowing female security operatives to wear hijabs, the government is empowering them to practice their religious and cultural beliefs without restriction. This decision is expected to boost the morale and confidence of female security operatives in the state,” he noted.

The commissioner explained that the decision follows a report presented by the Council Committee on Schools, Hospital, and Court Security.

He stated, “These companies are to allow female security operatives among the 9,969 young people recruited to wear Hijabs while on duty, as a matter of religious and cultural accommodation.”

“This move reaffirms the administration’s support for respectful workplace policies that uphold modesty, inclusion, and dignity,” said the commissioner.

Additionally, Mr. Musa revealed that the directive is expected to impact female security operatives positively, allowing them to practice their religious and cultural beliefs while performing their duties.
