Workers’ Welfare Remains a Priority, Tinubu Reassures Nigerians on May Day

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 1, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritising workers’ welfare, describing Nigeria’s labour force as the engine of the economy and the key to national development.

In a message posted on his official X handle to mark this year’s Workers’ Day, the President commended all categories of workers—young and old, entrepreneurs and employees, in both the private and public sectors—for their contributions to the growth of the country.

“Our administration has, and will continue to, prioritise workers’ welfare,” he said.

He added, “Together, we will make Nigeria great again.”

CBEX Resumes Operations Despite N1.2tn Fraud Allegation, Sets June for Investor Withdrawals

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 1, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Despite facing allegations of a N1.2 trillion digital trading fraud affecting over 600,000 Nigerians, the embattled Crypto Bridge Exchange (CBEX) has resumed operations and introduced new withdrawal options in a bid to restore investor confidence.

Two traders on the platform confirmed to reporters that CBEX had quietly restarted operations, enabling new users to register, trade, and withdraw profits, even as investigations by regulatory agencies continue.

According to the sources, an insurance verification process and an external audit of the firm’s financial records are currently ongoing to determine the actual amount lost when the platform collapsed in April.

They added that existing investors, many of whom have been unable to access their funds for several weeks, would be able to withdraw their money starting June 25, 2025, after the audit is expected to be completed by a UK-based insurance firm.

The development follows recent regulatory actions, including the Securities and Exchange Commission’s declaration of the platform as illegal and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s confirmation of an ongoing investigation into the company’s operations.

CBEX, which promised investors a 100 percent return after 30 days of purported AI-powered trading, began operations in 2024. The platform was registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission on September 25, 2024, and received approval from the EFCC’s Special Control Unit Against Money Laundering on January 16, 2025.

The platform reportedly collapsed on April 14, 2025, with at least 600,000 Nigerians said to have lost a combined total of N1.2 trillion.

FG Declares Thursday Public Holiday for Workers’ Day

by Nelson Ugwuagbo April 30, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Federal Government has declared Thursday, May 1, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Workers’ Day celebration.

Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the announcement in a statement issued on Tuesday, in which he commended Nigerian workers for their hard work, resilience, and contributions to national development.

He acknowledged the critical role of labour in advancing the country’s internal stability and global relevance, noting that the commitment of the workforce remains central to Nigeria’s growth.

“There is dignity in labour. The dedication and commitment to the work we do is vital to nation-building,” the minister stated.

Tunji-Ojo emphasized the importance of peace as a catalyst for industrialization and economic prosperity, and urged workers to embrace innovation and productivity in their respective fields.

He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, assuring both citizens and foreigners of continued efforts to maintain national security.

As part of his Workers’ Day message, the minister encouraged Nigerians to remain hopeful, reiterating President Bola Tinubu’s pledge to fulfill the objectives of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

He further called on workers to strive for excellence in their trades, adding that improved performance across sectors would enhance governance and ensure citizens fully benefit from the country’s resources.

PDP NWC Holds Emergency Meeting Over Mass Defections

by Nelson Ugwuagbo April 30, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday convened an emergency meeting at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, following a string of high-profile defections to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The closed-door meeting comes in the wake of the defection of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and his predecessor, former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, to the ruling APC. Okowa was also the PDP’s vice-presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections.

The defections dealt a major blow to the PDP’s presence in Delta State, as Deputy Governor Monday Onyeme, several state commissioners, local government chairmen, and the broader grassroots political structure also moved to the APC.

Governor Oborevwori justified the switch, stating that it was in the best interest of the state to align with the party controlling the Federal Government.

Party officials have yet to comment publicly on the outcome of the ongoing meeting, which is expected to address the growing crisis and chart a way forward for the embattled opposition party.

EFCC Arraigns Alleged Fraudster Aisha Achimugu In Court

by Nelson Ugwuagbo April 30, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Businesswoman Aisha Achimugu was on Wednesday presented before the Federal High Court in Abuja by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), in compliance with a court order.

The EFCC had declared Achimugu wanted in March on allegations of criminal conspiracy and money laundering. She was arrested upon her arrival in Nigeria on Monday.

Justice I.E. Ekwo of the Federal High Court had, on Tuesday, ordered that Achimugu be produced before the commission. The directive followed the ongoing investigation into the allegations leveled against her.

However, her legal counsel, Chief Chikaosolu Ojukwu, condemned the arrest, arguing that it contravened a valid court order. He maintained that the manner of her apprehension undermined due process.

The court proceedings are expected to continue as the EFCC advances its investigation.

Governor Eno Hints Defection to APC, Calls PDP “A Faulty Ship”

by Nelson Ugwuagbo April 30, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has likened the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to a faulty aircraft, sparking fresh speculation about his political future beyond 2027 and the possibility of defection from the party.

Speaking on Tuesday during a constituency outreach meeting in Ikot Akpankuk, Ukanafun Local Government Area, Eno questioned the viability of the PDP as a platform for his continued political journey. He used the metaphor of an airline with technical issues to illustrate his growing doubts.

“If you wanted to travel with Ibom Airline, and on the verge of taking off, it developed a fault that won’t enable it to fly, won’t you board the next available plane to take you to your destination?” he asked the crowd at the Ukanafun/Oruk Anam federal constituency town hall.

The analogy, widely interpreted as a thinly veiled hint at a possible defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), comes amid increasing turbulence within the PDP, including high-profile defections such as that of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to the ruling party.

While Governor Eno expressed concerns over the PDP’s internal disunity and direction, he urged his supporters to remain focused on the development goals of his administration. He emphasized that his immediate priority is delivering on campaign promises rather than engaging in partisan politics.

As part of the outreach, the governor distributed various empowerment packages to over 400 constituents. These included grants for 154 traders, support for 116 farmers, N5 million each to four individuals for business development, and equipment support for 131 beneficiaries.

Eno advised recipients to invest the funds wisely and avoid risky ventures such as Ponzi schemes. “We need to meet with the people from time to time. Governance doesn’t end at elections,” he said.

He noted that the engagement exercise had so far reached four of the state’s ten federal constituencies and pledged to complete all visits in time to incorporate constituents’ feedback into the 2026 state budget.

FG to establish centre to check Immigration, document fraud

by Folarin Kehinde April 30, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Federal Government on Tuesday said it will soon establish a centralized verification centre to check cases of immigration and document fraud.

Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo disclosed this in Abuja when he received the United Kingdom UK Minister of State for Home Affairs, David Hanson.

He said; “One of the key issues we also realized with border control is what we call immigration and document fraud. It is very key and we realized that one of the reasons why this is quite on the rise is because there is no centralized pool of authentication and verification of documents in real time.

“So today, if people submit 20 documents, you might need to go to 20 issuing agencies to verify 20 documents belonging to one person. So, if you have 1,000 people per day, you might need to look for 100,000 verification and authentication systems. That breeds inefficiency. And for us, we sincerely believe, and I will not shy away from this fact, and I will say this very clearly, that the unfortunate situation is that the bad reputation of a few is being magnified, is being amplified at the expense of the great reputation of the majority of Nigerians. But we are not blaming anybody for that. We are taking responsibility.

“Nigerians have a responsibility, and as such, as a country,we have decided to be able to create a real-time pool where authentication and verification of all documents, may it be bank statement, may it be passport, may it be birth certificate, may it be any document, just to one centre, where verification will happen.

So we are already working on that because we care about our image, and we care about our relationship and we want to be able to give people the opportunity to know what is right at any time that they wish to know it. It is not just about integration. It also affects investors. If somebody wants to invest in Nigeria, he will want to know who he is dealing with. As a government, we are trying to be more proactive than reactive, and we don’t want to judge our performance in terms of fraud by virtue of recoveries or convictions, but rather by the number of crimes or frauds that we prevented from happening. We want our performance to be based on our preventive measures and not just on our reactive measures. So we are also working on that”, he added.

Earlier, Hanson who led a delegation from the UK Home Office, the National Crime Agency and the UK High Commission in Nigeria, said both countries have to improve performance on criminal justice outcomes.

“There is a great common agenda that we can share and I am particularly keen to look at how we are working together closely. My visit this week will also look at the new Joint Centre that you are undertaking. I will meet with other colleagues in government departments.

“I think it is really important and I know that you visited recently and met with the Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper and that there is a willingness and a hope that we can further engage and that you want to organize regional conferences along the lines that we have been trying to do in the United Kingdom to raise some of these criminal justice issues within your sphere of influence here in Nigeria and beyond”, he added.

FIRS Orders Banks to Shut Down Unauthorised Tax Collection Accounts

by Nelson Ugwuagbo April 29, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has directed all banks in Nigeria to immediately identify and close any tax or levy collection accounts not authorised through its TaxPro Max platform.

The directive was issued in a public notice titled “Directive to Close Unauthorised FIRS Tax Collection Accounts”, signed by the Executive Chairman of FIRS, Dr. Zacch Adedeji, and released to journalists on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Media, Dare Adekanmbi.

According to the FIRS, the move is part of broader efforts to enhance operational efficiency, ensure transparency in tax administration, and standardize tax collection and reconciliation processes nationwide.

“Effective immediately, all tax and levy collections on behalf of FIRS must be processed exclusively pursuant to an assessment raised on the TaxPro Max platform,” the notice stated.

The agency further instructed all banks involved in its Collection, Remittance, and Reconciliation Scheme to comply with the directive within the stipulated timeframe.

“Coalition Does Not Need Governors to Defeat Tinubu in 2027” – El-Rufai

by Nelson Ugwuagbo April 29, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Former Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, has stated that the emerging coalition of opposition parties does not require the support of state governors to unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.

El-Rufai made the declaration during a media chat with journalists in Kano on Monday. The former governor, who recently left the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Social Democratic Party (SDP), emphasized that the coalition’s focus is on grassroots mobilisation rather than political endorsements from officeholders.

“We are trying to offer Nigerians a real alternative — something different from what they have seen before,” El-Rufai said.

He further noted, “A governor has only one vote. Nigerians have many more votes than one governor or even 36 governors combined.”

El-Rufai’s remarks signal a growing shift in strategy among opposition figures as the political landscape begins to take shape ahead of the 2027 elections.

by Nelson Ugwuagbo April 29, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Lagos Operations Office, in collaboration with other relevant agencies, on Monday received 203 vulnerable Nigerian returnees from Libya.

The agency disclosed the development in a statement posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Tuesday.

According to NEMA, the returnees arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Cargo Terminal, Lagos, at 7:00 p.m. aboard a chartered Al Buraq Airlines flight with registration number 5A-BAC.

The group comprised 50 adult males, 96 adult females, 29 children, and 28 infants. NEMA stated that the return was facilitated by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), with support from several Nigerian agencies, including the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons, the Nigeria Immigration Service, the Department of State Services, Port Health Services, and the Nigeria Police Force.

Two of the returnees reportedly had medical conditions and were immediately transferred to New Ikeja Hospitals for treatment.

Following their arrival, the returnees underwent profiling and biometric registration before being relocated to the Igando Internally Displaced Persons Resettlement Centre for further reintegration support.
