Sit-at-Home Order Losing Effectiveness in South-East – NSA Ribadu

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 23, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, has stated that the sit-at-home order enforced by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in Nigeria’s South-East region is losing its impact.

Speaking at the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Summit held in Abuja on Thursday, Ribadu said security conditions in the region have improved significantly under the current administration.

He noted that several high-ranking members of IPOB and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), have been captured or neutralised, weakening the group’s operations.

“The ‘sit-at-home’ orders are becoming more and more ineffective,” Ribadu said. He also reported a decline in attacks on security personnel across the region.

According to the NSA, over 50 police stations and posts have been reconstructed as normal social and economic activities begin to resume across the South-East.

The summit featured the presentation of a two-year scorecard by the Federal Government under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership.

Governor Diri Suspends Traditional Ruler over Sons’ Involvement in Cultism

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 22, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has suspended Wilcox Job, the paramount ruler of the Swali community in Yenagoa Local Government Area, over alleged links to cult activities involving his sons.

The suspension, which took immediate effect, was announced in a joint statement on Wednesday by Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai, Commissioner for Information, Orientation and Strategy, and Thompson Amule, Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs.

According to the statement, the traditional ruler was suspended for failing to provide the leadership expected of his office in combating crime and cultism, despite credible intelligence linking two of his sons to cult activities in the community.

“The commissioner of police has been directed to declare the two royal sons and all those involved in cultism in Swali wanted,” the statement read.

The commissioners further stated that all individuals connected to cultism in the area will be arrested, investigated, and prosecuted.

Edo Government Shuts Down Brothel in Primary School

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 22, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Edo State Government has uncovered and sealed a brothel allegedly operating within the premises of Ujuele Primary School in Esan West Local Government Area.

The discovery was announced on Thursday during a press briefing in Benin City by the State Coordinator for the Protection of Government Property (PGP), Eugene Okolosie.

Okolosie stated that the action followed complaints from members of the affected community who reported that land grabbers had forged signatures to illegally acquire government land, including school property.

He added that the government had so far recovered over 2,000 plots of encroached land across the state and that discussions were ongoing with Governor Godwin Obaseki on the possible conversion of the reclaimed properties.

“In Ujuele Primary School, they built a brothel inside the school. We have sealed the brothel,” Okolosie said.

He further disclosed that over 150,000 houses in the state were erected on government-owned land.

Peter Obi Slams Blackmailers Over False Tinubu Meeting, 225 Billion Fidelity Debt Claims

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 22, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, took to X this morning to debunk rumors alleging a secret meeting with President Bola Tinubu in Rome to discuss a supposed ₦225 billion Fidelity Bank debt crisis.

In a strongly worded post, Obi dismissed the claims as “falsehoods” spread by “blackmailers,” implicitly pointing fingers at Sahara Reporters and its publisher, Omoyele Sowore, who have been linked to the narrative on social media.

Obi clarified that his recent trip to Rome was solely to attend the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV, not for any clandestine meeting with Tinubu. He also addressed the Fidelity Bank allegations, denying ownership of the institution and emphasizing that his involvement was limited to serving as a board member years ago.

“These lies are meant to distract and mislead Nigerians,” Obi wrote, urging the public to disregard the rumors and calling out those orchestrating the smear campaign.

The rumors, which surfaced on X and other platforms, claimed Obi was entangled in a ₦225 billion debt crisis tied to Fidelity Bank and had sought Tinubu’s intervention. Posts on X suggested Sahara Reporters, led by Sowore, amplified these claims, prompting Obi’s swift response.

The former Anambra State governor accused the perpetrators of using blackmail to tarnish his reputation and sow division among Nigerians.

This is not the first time Obi has faced such allegations. Since his 2023 presidential bid, he has been a frequent target of misinformation, often linked to his vocal critiques of the current administration.

His post today reiterated his commitment to transparency and urged Nigerians to focus on pressing national issues rather than fabricated controversies.

As of now, neither Sahara Reporters nor Sowore has issued a direct response to Obi’s accusations. The incident underscores the growing role of social media in shaping political narratives in Nigeria, where misinformation can spread rapidly. Obi’s supporters on X have rallied behind him, trending hashtags like #ObiFightsLies, while critics continue to fuel the debate.

Governor Mbah Laments FG Exclusion of Enugu in 13% Oil Derivation Fund

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 21, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has called on the Federal Government to commence the disbursement of the 13 per cent oil derivation fund to the state in line with constitutional provisions.

Mbah made the appeal on Wednesday while receiving the Indices and Disbursement Committee of the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) at the Government House, Enugu.

He cited the Derivation Principle enshrined in the 1999 Constitution (as amended), stressing that Enugu is entitled to a share of the revenue from oil production activities within its territory.

The governor expressed concern that despite a December 2022 communication from the RMAFC acknowledging Enugu as an oil-producing state, the state is yet to receive any share of the derivation funds.

“We still have this pending issue of Enugu State being recognised as an oil-producing state, which your Office actually communicated to us sometime in December 2022, based on the report of the Inter-agency Technical Committee,” Mbah said.

“The Committee came up with a recommendation that Enugu should benefit from the 13 per cent derivation of the Anambra River Basin 1, Anambra River Basin 2, and Anambra River 3. But we have still not benefited from those fields. So, it is our hope that your Office will put the necessary machinery in motion to ensure that we begin to benefit from that,” he added.

The RMAFC team was in the state as part of its oversight on revenue disbursement indices and compliance.

Governor Zulum Accuses Military Officers, Politicians of Aiding Boko Haram

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 21, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has accused some military officers, politicians, and community members of acting as informants and collaborators for Boko Haram terrorists.

The governor made the allegation during an interview on News Central’s Breakfast Central, where he expressed frustration over the activities of saboteurs undermining efforts to combat insurgency in the state.

“We have informants and collaborators within the Nigerian Armed Forces, within the politicians, and within the communities,” Zulum said. “What we shall do is to strengthen our intelligence and to deal with them ruthlessly.”

Zulum, who vowed to take firm action against those frustrating the state’s anti-terrorism efforts, said his administration would intensify intelligence gathering and improve security coordination.

He also called for the elimination of what he described as “contractocracy,” stressing that insecurity should not be politicised.

“In six months, we can put an end to this madness. We need not politicise insecurity,” he said.

The governor further emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to fighting insurgency, arguing that military action alone would not bring lasting peace.

“Insurgency will never end with kinetic measures alone; we must ensure that the non-kinetic measures are also put in place. What I mean by non-kinetic measures are socio-political and economic dimensions of the crisis,” he said.

Zulum also noted concerns regarding former insurgents who have laid down arms, stating that while over 300,000 have reportedly repented, there remains the possibility that some may return to the bush.

JAMB to Release Results of 379,000 Rescheduled UTME Candidates on Wednesday

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 20, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced that results for 379,000 candidates who participated in the rescheduled Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) will be released on Wednesday.

The rescheduled examination, conducted between Friday and Monday, followed widespread reports of technical and human errors during the initial UTME, which significantly affected candidates’ performance—particularly in Lagos and the South-East.

Acknowledging the lapses, JAMB cited system failures as the reason for the resit. The Board’s Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, had earlier accepted responsibility for the disruptions and announced the makeup exam while visibly emotional during a press briefing.

Out of the 1,955,069 candidates who sat the original UTME, over 1.5 million reportedly scored below 200 out of a possible 400, sparking public concern over the exam’s credibility.

Confirming the release date, JAMB’s spokesperson, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, told journalists on Monday that the resit results would be made public on Wednesday.

“The results of the candidates who took the rescheduled exam will be released on Wednesday,” Benjamin said.

According to the Board, a total of 379,997 candidates were affected by the initial glitches—206,610 from 65 centres in Lagos and 173,387 from 92 centres in the South-East.

CBN Retains Interest Rate at 27.5% as Inflation Eases

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 20, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has voted to retain the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) at 27.5 percent.

CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso made the announcement on Tuesday during a press briefing following the 300th MPC meeting held in Abuja.

“The committee unanimously agreed to retain the MPR at 27.5 percent,” Cardoso said.

Other key monetary parameters were also left unchanged. The Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) remains at 45 percent for commercial banks and 16 percent for mortgage banks, while the Liquidity Ratio (LR) stays at 30 percent. The asymmetric corridor around the MPR was maintained at +500/-100 basis points.

Cardoso said the decision to hold rates steady was informed by recent data showing a slight easing in inflation. Nigeria’s headline inflation rate declined to 23.7 percent in April, according to figures released last week by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The MPC, he noted, will continue to monitor economic indicators and adjust policy tools as necessary to ensure macroeconomic stability.

Workers Protest Poor Allowance At Federal Ministry of Finance

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 20, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Members of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) staged a protest at the Federal Ministry of Finance in Abuja over unresolved issues relating to allowance arrears and other emoluments.

The protesting workers, dressed in red T-shirts, blocked the main gate of the ministry, preventing vehicular movement in and out of the premises.

Although none of the protesters have granted media interviews, placards displayed at the scene indicate that the demonstration is linked to unpaid entitlements and other welfare-related grievances.

The protest caused disruptions within the ministry’s premises, as staff and visitors were temporarily stranded outside the building.

More details are expected as the situation develops.

Falana Opposes Compulsory Voting Bill, Say’s It Unconstitutional and Impractical

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 20, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, has described the proposed bill seeking to make voting compulsory in Nigeria as both unconstitutional and impractical under the current legal framework.

The bill, jointly sponsored by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, and Labour Party lawmaker Daniel Asama Ago, aims to amend the Electoral Act to mandate voting in national and state elections. It proposes penalties including a six-month jail term or a fine of ₦100,000 for eligible voters who fail to cast their ballots.

During Thursday’s plenary session, Ago, who represents Bassa/Jos North Federal Constituency, argued that the legislation is designed to combat voter apathy and curb vote-buying. He was supported by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who cited Australia as an example where mandatory voting has reportedly boosted civic responsibility.

However, Falana, in a statement issued on Monday titled ‘Compulsory Voting is Not Enough’, faulted the proposed law on constitutional grounds, warning that it infringes on several fundamental rights guaranteed by the 1999 Constitution.

“The Speaker of the House of Representatives probably wants Nigeria to join Egypt—the only African country out of 23 globally with provisions for compulsory voting,” Falana said.

He noted that the Constitution protects citizens’ rights to privacy, freedom of thought and conscience, as well as the freedom to choose whether to vote.

Falana argued that the bill contradicts key constitutional provisions, specifically Sections 37, 38, 77(2), 135(5), and 178(5), which, according to him, do not support any form of electoral compulsion.

“It is doubtful whether the Speaker and his colleagues have paid sufficient attention to the relevant provisions of the Constitution,” he added.

The senior lawyer urged lawmakers to focus on electoral reforms that promote transparency and voter education rather than coercion.
