CBN Retains Interest Rate at 27.5% as Inflation Eases

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 20, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has voted to retain the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) at 27.5 percent.

CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso made the announcement on Tuesday during a press briefing following the 300th MPC meeting held in Abuja.

“The committee unanimously agreed to retain the MPR at 27.5 percent,” Cardoso said.

Other key monetary parameters were also left unchanged. The Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) remains at 45 percent for commercial banks and 16 percent for mortgage banks, while the Liquidity Ratio (LR) stays at 30 percent. The asymmetric corridor around the MPR was maintained at +500/-100 basis points.

Cardoso said the decision to hold rates steady was informed by recent data showing a slight easing in inflation. Nigeria’s headline inflation rate declined to 23.7 percent in April, according to figures released last week by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The MPC, he noted, will continue to monitor economic indicators and adjust policy tools as necessary to ensure macroeconomic stability.

Workers Protest Poor Allowance At Federal Ministry of Finance

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 20, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Members of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) staged a protest at the Federal Ministry of Finance in Abuja over unresolved issues relating to allowance arrears and other emoluments.

The protesting workers, dressed in red T-shirts, blocked the main gate of the ministry, preventing vehicular movement in and out of the premises.

Although none of the protesters have granted media interviews, placards displayed at the scene indicate that the demonstration is linked to unpaid entitlements and other welfare-related grievances.

The protest caused disruptions within the ministry’s premises, as staff and visitors were temporarily stranded outside the building.

More details are expected as the situation develops.

Falana Opposes Compulsory Voting Bill, Say’s It Unconstitutional and Impractical

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 20, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, has described the proposed bill seeking to make voting compulsory in Nigeria as both unconstitutional and impractical under the current legal framework.

The bill, jointly sponsored by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, and Labour Party lawmaker Daniel Asama Ago, aims to amend the Electoral Act to mandate voting in national and state elections. It proposes penalties including a six-month jail term or a fine of ₦100,000 for eligible voters who fail to cast their ballots.

During Thursday’s plenary session, Ago, who represents Bassa/Jos North Federal Constituency, argued that the legislation is designed to combat voter apathy and curb vote-buying. He was supported by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who cited Australia as an example where mandatory voting has reportedly boosted civic responsibility.

However, Falana, in a statement issued on Monday titled ‘Compulsory Voting is Not Enough’, faulted the proposed law on constitutional grounds, warning that it infringes on several fundamental rights guaranteed by the 1999 Constitution.

“The Speaker of the House of Representatives probably wants Nigeria to join Egypt—the only African country out of 23 globally with provisions for compulsory voting,” Falana said.

He noted that the Constitution protects citizens’ rights to privacy, freedom of thought and conscience, as well as the freedom to choose whether to vote.

Falana argued that the bill contradicts key constitutional provisions, specifically Sections 37, 38, 77(2), 135(5), and 178(5), which, according to him, do not support any form of electoral compulsion.

“It is doubtful whether the Speaker and his colleagues have paid sufficient attention to the relevant provisions of the Constitution,” he added.

The senior lawyer urged lawmakers to focus on electoral reforms that promote transparency and voter education rather than coercion.

Peter Obi Set to Declare 2027 Presidential Bid as Atiku Coalition Stalls

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 20, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Amid intensifying political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi is poised to formally declare his candidacy for president, this time as the leading contender rather than a running mate.

Multiple sources confirmed over the weekend that Obi, who ran in the 2023 polls under the Labour Party, is preparing to unveil his 2027 presidential ambition alongside the political platform he intends to contest under.

“Peter Obi will not run as anyone’s running mate. He led a three-day meeting with Atiku’s team, and they could not agree on the vice-presidential offer,” one source familiar with the negotiations said. “Within the week, he will present himself as a presidential contender and may unveil his party platform.”

The development comes as coalition talks between Obi’s camp and that of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar reportedly collapsed. Atiku is now said to be in advanced talks with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), exploring the possibility of contesting under its banner.

The ADC, currently led by Chief Ralph Okey Nwosu, is undergoing a leadership restructuring and absorbing former members of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), according to party insiders. The party is expected to emerge as one of the major platforms in a projected three-horse race for the presidency.

Chief Nwosu confirmed that several high-profile politicians have approached the party but declined to comment specifically on Atiku’s plans, citing the party’s upcoming primary and national convention.

The evolving political landscape suggests both Obi and Atiku are repositioning themselves ahead of what promises to be a highly competitive 2027 contest.

Expert slam Nigeria’s Triple-Exam University Entry System as unfair, outdated

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 20, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

An education-policy expert on Facebook has blasted the country’s admissions system, saying Nigeria is “virtually the only country forcing it’s school-leavers to clear three different exams, WAEC, the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and Post-UTME before they can gain admission into the university.

The Facebook post, shared widely at the weekend, contrasts the Nigerian model with those of developed nations like Canada and the United States, where a single set of school results or a one-time college-readiness test usually suffices.

How the three-tier regime took shape

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) was created in 1978 after the Committee of Vice-Chancellors urged the federal government to rationalise university entry.

A military decree merged two planned bodies, one for matriculation, another for placement—into a single agency that was meant to handle five distinct tasks, only one of which involved testing students.

Today, critics argue that JAMB has become “largely an exam vendor”, and has failed in it’s duties of admiting students seamlessly.

This year’s UTME illustrates the problem. Of the 1.9 million candidates who sat the test, only about 420 000 (22 per cent) reached the 200-point benchmark that universities typically accept.

Nearly 80 per cent fell short, in some cases after computer glitches left questions blank on-screen.

“If a national exam excludes four in five candidates—and then asks many to pay to resit, what public purpose is it serving?” the analyst asked.

What comparable systems look like:

In Canada, Grade 12 transcripts usually open the door; there is no national exit exam, let alone a second or third gate.

Also, in the United States, most universities consider a student’s best SAT or ACT score—tests that can be taken multiple times—with no extra screening at campus level.
BBC

Both countries accept the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WAEC) as proof of secondary completion from Nigerian applicants, the analyst notes—“yet at home the same WAEC result is treated as merely hurdle one.”

The critic noted that each added test means fresh fees, months of preparation and travel to distant centres. Exposing the students to emotional stress, insecurity, and inflation as they must now budget for three exams.

Beyond cost, time is lost. Candidates may wait a full academic year if any stage gets delayed. “We are burdening young people with hoops that even more prestigious systems don’t impose—and we still have no Nigerian university in the global top 20,” the post concludes.

JUST IN: Accident Occurs on Karu Bridge, Nyanya-Keffi Road

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 19, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

A crash has occurred on Karu Bridge along the Nyanya-Keffi expressway in Abuja, less than 24 hours after a fatal accident was reported at the same location.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident involved a trailer and a vehicle transporting sachet water, commonly referred to as “pure water.”

Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the crash, though the number of casualties has not yet been confirmed.

The repeated incidents have raised fresh concerns over road safety along the busy route, which links the Federal Capital Territory to Nasarawa State.

Bayelsa: Gunmen attack Rhythm FM During Live Transmission

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 19, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Suspected armed robbers have attacked a private radio station, Rhythm 94.7 FM, in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, carting away valuables including mobile phones, recording devices, and other operational equipment belonging to staff on duty.

The incident reportedly occurred around 4:40 p.m. on Saturday at the station’s premises in Swali community. Sources said the attackers returned to the facility the following day. No casualties were reported, but staff members were said to be left traumatised by the invasion.

The Bayelsa State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has condemned the attack, describing it as a violation of press freedom and an assault on the media community in the state.

In a statement jointly signed by the NUJ State Chairman, Comrade Tonye Yemoleigha, and Secretary, Comrade Stanley Imgbi, the union called on security agencies, particularly the Commissioner of Police, to launch an investigation and bring the perpetrators to justice.

The union further appealed for enhanced security around the radio station, urging the deployment of a patrol team to the area due to its isolated location.

They noted that other strategic locations in Yenagoa already benefit from such security measures and that extending similar protection to the media house would help prevent further attacks.

South East Reps Demands JAMB Registrars Resignation Over UTME Scandal

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 19, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The South East Caucus of the House of Representatives has called for the immediate resignation of the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, citing what it described as a “catastrophic institutional failure” in the conduct of the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

In a statement issued on Monday, the caucus leader, Hon. Igariwey Enwo, criticised the examination body for technical glitches that reportedly affected nearly 380,000 candidates, many of whom have now been directed to retake the examination.

The lawmakers described JAMB’s response to the incident as “grossly inadequate,” citing poor communication, scheduling conflicts with ongoing WAEC examinations, and the short notice given to candidates for the rescheduled test.

They called for the immediate cancellation of the 2025 UTME and the fixing of a new date—preferably after the conclusion of WAEC and NECO exams—to avoid further disruption to students’ academic schedules.

The caucus also demanded the suspension of officials responsible for JAMB’s digital operations and logistics.

“Over the past week, we have exercised restraint, hoping that JAMB would provide effective remedial measures to address what is clearly a catastrophic institutional failure—one that has severely shaken public trust and the confidence of students and their families nationwide,” the statement read.

According to the lawmakers, all five South Eastern states were directly affected by what they referred to as “score distortions,” adding that the measures taken so far by JAMB had fallen short of expectations.

They criticised the Board’s “knee-jerk, fire-brigade approach,” noting that many students currently sitting for the WAEC examinations were given less than 48 hours’ notice to sit for the rescheduled UTME.

“This notice was grossly inadequate, resulting in low turnout. In some cases, the rescheduled UTME clashed directly with ongoing WAEC papers, compounding the distress and confusion for students and their families,” the statement added.

The caucus insisted that accountability must go beyond public apologies, stating that Prof. Oloyede’s resignation would pave the way for an independent review of the failure and help restore public confidence in JAMB.

Edo Deputy Speaker, Maria Oligbi-Edeko, resigns from office

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 19, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Deputy Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Hon. Maria Oligbi-Edeko, has resigned from her position.

Oligbi-Edeko, who represents Esan North-East II, announced her resignation during plenary on Monday in Benin City, the state capital.

Her decision follows the recent shift in the Assembly’s political balance, after several members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), including the Speaker, defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), rendering the PDP a minority in the House.

Oligbi-Edeko was elected Deputy Speaker on June 16, 2023. Following her resignation, lawmakers unanimously elected Hon. Osamwonyi Atu, who represents Orhionmwon East under the APC, as the new Deputy Speaker.

During the session, Majority Leader Hon. Jonathan Aigbokhan moved a motion requesting that all entitlements due to the office of the Deputy Speaker be accorded to Oligbi-Edeko. The motion was seconded by Minority Leader Hon. Charity Airobarueghian and was unanimously adopted.

In her resignation letter, Oligbi-Edeko cited the need to uphold justice, fairness, and equity across all constituencies. She also expressed appreciation to PDP leaders and members for the opportunity to serve her constituency in the House.

Fellow lawmakers commended her commitment and dedication to public service.

Tinubu Approves Regulatory Licences for Kolmani Oil Project

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 19, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

President Bola Tinubu has approved the issuance of critical regulatory licences for the Kolmani Integrated Development Project, a multibillion-dollar oil exploration initiative situated between Bauchi and Gombe states.

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, made the disclosure during the commissioning of the permanent site of the Bauchi Oil and Gas Academy in Alkaleri Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

A statement by the Minister’s Special Adviser on Media and Communication, Nneamaka Okafor, on Sunday, said the move aligns with the President’s commitment to revitalising Nigeria’s oil sector by activating all necessary national facilities.

“This informed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approval for us to ensure that all outstanding critical regulatory licences for the Kolmani Integrated Development Project were issued,” the Minister was quoted as saying.

Lokpobiri said the administration remained focused on harnessing the energy sector as a catalyst for national prosperity. He commended Bauchi State for establishing the oil and gas academy, noting that it positions the state as a key player in the human capital development needed to support the sector.

“Given our vast fossil fuel reserves, the Federal Government, through the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), has continued to champion advancements in human capacity and technology,” he said.

The Minister expressed hope that the Bauchi Oil and Gas Academy would establish a strong partnership with the PTDF to ensure long-term success and sustainability in the sector.

The Kolmani Integrated Development Project, first inaugurated in November 2022, marked the beginning of oil exploration in Northern Nigeria. It is located in the Kolmani River II oil field, a border community between Bauchi and Gombe states.
