Tinubu seeks approval for fresh $21.5bn, €2.2bn Foreign Loans

by Andrew Mailafia May 27, 2025
written by Andrew Mailafia

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has written to the House of Representatives seeking approval for three major financial proposals involving external and domestic borrowings amounting to billions of dollars, euros, and naira.

In a set of letters read on Tuesday during plenary by the Speaker, Abbas Tajudeen, the president requested legislative backing for the federal government’s external borrowing rolling plan for 2025–2026, a $2 billion foreign currency bond issuance in the domestic market, and the issuance of bonds to clear outstanding pension liabilities under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).

In the first letter, Tinubu sought the House’s approval to raise up to $2 billion through the issuance of foreign currency-denominated financial instruments in Nigeria’s domestic debt market. The issuance, the President said, is in line with a Presidential Executive Order signed in October 2023.

“This request is pursuant to the provisions of Section 44 (1) and (2) of the Fiscal Responsibility Act 2007 and Section 1(7) of the Executive Order, which requires National Assembly approval for all new borrowings and appropriation of the proceeds,” the president wrote.

The proceeds, according to the president, will be invested in critical sectors of the economy to drive growth, infrastructure, job creation, and foreign exchange earnings.

The strategy, he explained, aims to diversify government funding sources, stabilise the naira, and deepen the local financial market.

However, he acknowledged that the capital raising will increase Nigeria’s public debt stock and debt servicing costs.

In another communication, Tinubu presented a detailed external borrowing plan for the 2025–2026 period. He said the proposed loans amounting to $21.5 billion, €2.2 billion, 15 billion Japanese yen, and a €65 million in grants, would fund priority projects across infrastructure, agriculture, health, education, water supply, security, and employment generation.

“These projects were selected based on technical and economic evaluations and are geared toward addressing the country’s infrastructure deficit, reducing poverty, creating jobs, and boosting food security,” the president stated.

He added that most of the projects would be implemented across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Citing the impact of subsidy removal and dwindling domestic revenues, Tinubu emphasised the urgency of closing the financial gap through prudent external borrowing, noting that the funds will be targeted at sectors such as power, railways, and healthcare.

2025 Children’s Day: You are the leaders of tomorrow – Tinubu

by Andrew Mailafia May 27, 2025
written by Andrew Mailafia

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sent a message to Nigerian children in celebration of the 2025 National Children’s Day, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to their protection, development, and well-being.

In his message on Tuesday, President Tinubu described Nigerian children as the pride and future of the nation, calling them the heartbeat of the country’s tomorrow and the custodians of future leadership, innovation, and progress.

He expressed profound joy in celebrating the day with them and emphasized the government’s constitutional and moral responsibility to safeguard their rights and nurture their dreams.

Speaking on the theme of this year’s celebration, “Stand Up, Speak Up: Building a Bullying-Free Generation,” the President underscored the need to foster a culture in which every child feels safe, respected, and heard. He condemned bullying and violence in all forms, both in physical environments and digital spaces, noting that such behaviours have no place in today’s Nigeria.

BREAKING: Tinubu Orders FCTA to Reopen Sealed PDP National Headquarters, Other Buildings

by Andrew Mailafia May 26, 2025
written by Andrew Mailafia

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has stepped in to halt the enforcement of property seizures initiated by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), led by Minister Nyesom Wike, over unpaid ground rent.

On Monday, FCTA officials sealed off multiple properties across the city, including those reportedly belonging to the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), leading to widespread public criticism.

In a swift response, President Tinubu ordered a temporary suspension of the takeover operations and granted affected property owners a 14-day window.

A statement issued by Chijioke Nwankwoeze, Director of Land Administration for the FCT, announcing the development reads:
“Today, May 26, 2025, we commenced enforcement on the 4,794 properties revoked for non-payment of Ground Rent, from 10 to 43 years.

“Properties owned by government institutions, corporate organisations and individuals were affected. This demonstrates the Federal Capital Territory Administration’s commitment to carrying out its functions without fear or favour.

“However, the President, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has intervened. Therefore, by Mr. President’s intervention, holders of the affected properties now have 14 days (TWO WEEKS) to settle the outstanding Ground Rents, with associated penalties.

“For properties in the Central Area, the sum of N5 million will be paid by the defaulters as penalty, in addition to the Ground Rent owed.

“Those in Maitama, Asokoro, Wuse II, and Guzape Districts will pay the sum of N3 million as penalty, in addition to the Ground Rent owed.

“Defaulters in Wuse I, Garki I and Garki II will pay N2 million as penalty in addition to the Ground Rent owed.

“Also, all those who purchased properties from other people, but are yet to register their interests by obtaining the mandatory Minister’s Consent and registering their Deeds of Assignment now have 14 days (TWO WEEKS) to do so at the FCT Department of Land Administration.

“Furthermore, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, CON, has granted a 14 days (TWO WEEKS) grace period to all property holders in the FCT to pay up their Right of Occupancy (R-of-O)/Certificate of Occupancy (C-of-O) bills, or risk revocation of those titles.

“Going forward, the Minister has advised property owners in the FCT to ensure that they pay all necessary bills and charges on their properties as at and when due, so as to enable the government to continue to carry out necessary developmental projects for the benefit of the people.”

Why I was deported from attending 2025 Hajj – Sheikh Gumi

by Andrew Mailafia May 26, 2025
written by Andrew Mailafia

Renowned Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has been deported from Saudi Arabia after being denied entry into Medina, effectively barring him from participating in the 2025 Hajj pilgrimage.

Sheikh Gumi, a Kaduna-based cleric known for his controversial views on national and international issues, confirmed the development in a statement posted on his official Facebook page on Monday.

“Due to some reasons related to my views on world politics, the authorities in Saudi Arabia do not want me to be present at Hajj even though they have granted me a visa,” Gumi wrote.

The cleric, who was part of a delegation of religious scholars sponsored by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), arrived at Prince Mohammad Bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Medina on Saturday night via Umza Air.

However, upon arrival, Saudi immigration officials reportedly stopped him at the airport and denied him entry into the city, before placing him on a return flight to Nigeria.

Sheikh Gumi added in a statement on his page said that the Nigerian authorities have shown concern and have promised to engage Saudi officials to seek clarification and resolution.

“I am grateful to the authorities in Nigeria who have pledged to engage with the Saudi authorities on this matter,” he said.

A source within NAHCON, who requested anonymity, confirmed the incident, noting that the Commission was surprised by the Saudi decision, especially since all members of the delegation had received valid visas and had met the standard requirements for Hajj participation.

Although no official reason has been provided by Saudi Arabia for the deportation, observers believe the action may be connected to Sheikh Gumi’s outspoken political and religious views, which may be at variance with the kingdom’s policies. Gumi has in recent years played a prominent role in dialogue initiatives with armed groups in Nigeria’s northern region and has often voiced criticism of Western and Middle Eastern political interventions.

The incident has sparked discussions among religious communities and the wider public, with many questioning the implications of political ideology on religious observance.

As of the time of filing this report, no official statement from the Saudi embassy or the Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the development.

Sheikh Gumi has since resumed his public preaching and teaching engagements in the country..

Obi Lacks Authority To Represent LP in Coalition – Abure

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 26, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The factional National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Barrister Julius Abure, has stated that Peter Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, does not have the authority to negotiate any coalition or alliance on behalf of the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Amid speculation surrounding Obi’s recent declaration of interest to run again in 2027 under the LP platform, Abure clarified that the party’s presidential ticket remains open and will be contested in accordance with its internal rules.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Monday by the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, the party firmly rejected any coalition talks linked to Obi, stating: “We have consistently maintained that the Labour Party will not engage in any coalition or merger ahead of the 2027 general election. Obi’s continued involvement with such coalition efforts is not only inappropriate but unacceptable to the party. It undermines the authority of the party leadership and disregards the internal processes that guide our decision-making.”

The statement further noted that although the party, during its 2024 National Convention, had offered automatic tickets to Obi and its only governor, that decision had been reversed following a review of the party’s constitution and guidelines.

The party also criticised Obi for attending a recent pro-coalition meeting in Abuja without prior consultation or approval from the party’s leadership.

“This move is confusing and suggests that Peter Obi has yet to fully clarify his intentions for the 2027 presidential election,” the statement added.

The LP reiterated that its 2027 presidential ticket is open to all eligible aspirants and will be determined through a transparent and democratic process.

BREAKING: FCTA seals PDP National Secretariat

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 26, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Federal Capital Territory Authority (FCTA) on Monday sealed the National Secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) located in the Zone 5 area of Abuja over non-payment of ground rent.

The development was confirmed by Lere Olayinka, spokesperson to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

“FCTA seals PDP Secretariat in Zone 5, Abuja. It was revoked for not paying ground rent,” Olayinka said in a statement.

He explained that the property, owned by Senator Samaila Mamman Kurfi, had accumulated unpaid ground rent for 28 years, prompting the FCTA to take action.

The sealing of the property comes amid ongoing efforts by the FCT administration to enforce compliance with land use regulations and recover outstanding dues.

Over 200,000 More Candidates Score Above 200 After JAMB Resit

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 26, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

More than 200,000 additional candidates have scored above the 200-mark average in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) following a resit conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

The resit, held for 379,000 candidates in Lagos and South-East states, was organised to address technical and human errors that affected the original examination. JAMB released the resit results on Sunday.

According to the board, 1,365,479 candidates—representing 70.7 per cent of the 1.9 million total candidates—still scored below 200 after both the original UTME and the resit.

The initial results released on May 9, 2025, showed that over 1.5 million candidates scored below the 200 mark out of a possible 400, sparking nationwide concern.

Amid growing public pressure, JAMB launched an internal review and identified both technical faults and human errors in its system. The discovery led to the decision to conduct a resit for the affected candidates.

The latest figures show a reduction in the number of candidates scoring below 200, from over 1.5 million to 1,365,479—indicating that more than 200,000 candidates improved their scores in the resit.

House Speaker Abbas Withdraws Bill on Mandatory Voting

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 26, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has withdrawn a bill seeking to make voting compulsory for all eligible Nigerians.

The proposed legislation, co-sponsored with Daniel Asama Ago, aimed to amend the Electoral Act 2022 to boost voter turnout and strengthen the country’s democratic processes.

In a statement released on Monday by his media aide, Musa Krishi, the Speaker said the decision followed wide consultations with individuals and groups across the country.

“From the start, the goal was to get more people involved in elections and strengthen democracy by boosting voter turnout,” the statement read.

The bill had passed second reading in the House on Thursday, but it triggered mixed reactions. While some supported it as a means to improve participation in elections, others criticised it as an infringement on personal freedom and questioned its feasibility in a country as diverse as Nigeria.

Citing examples from countries such as Australia, Belgium, and Brazil where compulsory voting has resulted in higher voter participation, Abbas acknowledged that Nigeria must adopt a system that aligns with its unique realities.

“Lawmaking is about serving the people, and any new law must respect personal freedom,” he said.

He added that rather than enforcing mandatory voting, efforts would now shift towards encouraging electoral participation, particularly among youths and first-time voters.

“This withdrawal gives us time to talk more about how to build a culture of voluntary voting that supports our democracy and respects citizens’ rights,” Abbas stated.

Public opposition to the bill had been strong, with many Nigerians urging lawmakers to address underlying issues affecting voter turnout, such as electoral violence, distrust in the system, and poor election-day logistics.

PDP Crisis Worsens as Wike Attacks Makinde, Pulls Out of Reconciliation Committee

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 26, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) deepened on Sunday as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, announced his withdrawal from all reconciliation efforts within the party.

Wike, a former governor of Rivers State and prominent member of the G5 group, blamed Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for the ongoing turmoil, accusing him of being the “chief culprit” behind the party’s internal crisis.

In a personally signed statement, Wike alleged that Makinde’s failure to honour agreements reached during previous peace talks was at the heart of the party’s challenges. He also accused other senior party figures, including Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, of betrayal and consistent violation of mutual understandings.

“The Governor of Oyo State, His Excellency Seyi Makinde, is the architect of our problems. Non-adherence to agreements reached is the bane of the party, and he is the chief culprit of this anomaly,” Wike stated.

He traced the root of the crisis to the aftermath of the 2023 general elections and vowed to continue fighting until justice is achieved within the party.

Governor Umo Eno to Orders Commissioners, Appointees To Join APC or Resign

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 23, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has directed all commissioners and political appointees in his administration to either join him in defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC) or resign from their positions.

The directive was issued during a State Executive Council meeting held on Thursday, confirming ongoing speculation about the governor’s planned defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“It’s no more news that I’m moving party. If you don’t know that by now, I don’t know what else you know,” Governor Eno said.

He made it clear that while appointees are not compelled to follow him to the APC, they cannot remain in his cabinet while belonging to a different political party.

“We want our commissioners, members of the executive council, and appointees to understand this: you are absolutely free not to join me. But you won’t remain in my State Executive Council,” the governor said.

“You better be prepared to resign the day I announce that I’m moving, because your loyalty is to me as an appointee. You can’t be in my cabinet and play anti-party. It’s not a threat — it is what it is.”

Governor Eno, who was elected under the PDP, said he still holds affection for the party but expressed concern over its internal crisis, which he believes could hinder future electoral success.
