Mauritania’s Sidi Ould Tah Elected New AfDB President, Succeeds Adesina

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 29, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Mauritania’s former Minister of Economy and Finance, Dr. Sidi Ould Tah, has been elected as the new President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), succeeding Nigeria’s Dr. Akinwumi Adesina at the helm of the continent’s premier financial institution.

The 60-year-old development expert emerged victorious on Thursday after securing 76.18% of the total votes in just three rounds of balloting—fewer than the six rounds required for his predecessor’s win in 2015. His swift ascent to the presidency signals strong continental and international confidence in his leadership.

Zambian economist Samuel Munzele Maimbo placed a distant second with 20.26%, while Senegal’s Amadou Hott followed with 3.55%.

Under AfDB election rules, the winning candidate must garner a dual majority: support from the bank’s 81 total member countries and a separate majority from its 54 African member states. Tah met both criteria, securing 72.37% of the African vote.

Dr. Tah brings over a decade of leadership experience from the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA), where he served as Director General. His cross-regional expertise is expected to enhance collaboration between North African and sub-Saharan member states, particularly at a time when the AfDB faces growing challenges, including the reduction of U.S. funding.

In a statement conceding the race, Maimbo extended congratulations to the incoming president:
“I wish to congratulate Dr. Sidi Ould Tah on his successful election as the President-elect of the African Development Bank Group. I entered this race driven by a love and deep concern for our continent and offered a vision for Africa’s future. Today, the Governors have chosen the leader they believe will best deliver the vision of the Africa we want at this pivotal moment.”

Dr. Tah is expected to take office as the AfDB seeks to reinforce its development agenda amid global financial shifts and mounting continental demands.

Nigerian Pilgrim Returns $5,000 Lost in Makkah, Earns Praise for Integrity

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 29, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

A Nigerian pilgrim, Hajiya Zainab from Plateau State, has been hailed for her rare display of honesty after returning $5,000 (approximately ₦8.2 million) she found at the Masjidul Haram in Makkah to a fellow pilgrim from Russia.

Her act of integrity has drawn commendation from both the Plateau State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board and the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON).

In a statement issued by the Executive Secretary of the Plateau Pilgrims Board, Daiyabu Dauda, Hajiya Zainab was described as a shining example of moral uprightness and virtue.

“She demonstrated exceptional integrity and honesty by returning $5,000 she found in Masjidul Haram to its rightful owner. That’s a remarkable act of kindness,” Dauda said.

NAHCON also lauded the gesture, noting that it reflects the values expected of pilgrims on the holy journey.

Meanwhile, NAHCON has disclosed that discussions are ongoing with Saudi authorities to reopen visa processing for intending Nigerian pilgrims who are yet to travel.

In a statement released Wednesday by the Commission’s Assistant Director of Information, Fatima Usara, NAHCON expressed cautious optimism.

“There is optimism for a positive outcome, and when that is realised, the commission will immediately transport the registered pilgrims for the Hajj in another special arrangement,” Usara stated.

She added that selected staff members have already been placed on standby should the visa window be reopened.

WASSCE Candidates Escape Death as School Building Collapse in Taraba

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 29, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Hundreds of students writing the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) narrowly escaped death on Wednesday evening when a classroom building collapsed at Government Secondary School, Namnai village, in Gassol Local Government Area of Taraba State.

The incident occurred around 6 p.m. during a severe storm, shortly after the second batch of students had begun their examination.

Eyewitnesses said strong winds and heavy rainfall caused the classrooms to cave in, trapping students, teachers, members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), and exam supervisors under the rubble.

“Many victims, both male and female students, sustained serious injuries, including fractures,” said Alhaji DanAzumi Lauris, a resident of the village.

He added that local residents carried out rescue efforts that lasted several hours before the trapped individuals were pulled out.

The injured were taken to a nearby primary healthcare centre for treatment. Several residential buildings in Namnai were also reportedly damaged by the storm.

In a related development, the heavy downpour also disrupted WASSCE examinations in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital. Flooding and poor visibility left many students stranded, with some unable to return home until after 1 a.m.

As of the time of writing, government authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident or the possible adjustment of the examination schedule.

BREAKING: President Tinubu Sends Message to Nigerians at Midterm of Tenure [FULL TEXT]

by Andrew Mailafia May 29, 2025
written by Andrew Mailafia

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sent a message to the nation as his administration marks the halfway point of its four-year tenure.

In a statement on Thursday, May 29, 2025, the President reaffirmed his commitment to economic reform, national security, and inclusive development under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

He acknowledged the challenges that trailed the inception of his administration in 2023, while highlighting the policy decisions and reforms that have since reshaped the country’s fiscal and economic trajectory.

“Two years ago, you entrusted me with the sacred responsibility to lead our nation at a time of historic challenges,” Tinubu said. “The situation I inherited demanded urgent and courageous action.”

He justified the immediate removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of the foreign exchange market, calling both steps necessary to prevent economic collapse. “These measures were painful but essential,” he noted, citing runaway inflation, debt default, and a plunging naira as the likely alternative outcomes.

President Tinubu reported that inflation is beginning to ease, staple food prices like rice have dropped, and foreign investment in the oil and gas sector is rebounding—rising by over $8 billion this year. He pointed to a 400% increase in rig count since 2021 and said the government is meeting fiscal targets.

According to the President, Nigeria’s fiscal deficit dropped from 5.4% of GDP in 2023 to 3.0% in 2024, thanks to increased revenue and improved financial transparency. Ways and Means financing has been discontinued, and external reserves surged from $4 billion to over $23 billion within a year.

The administration has also cleared IMF obligations and significantly lowered the debt service-to-revenue ratio from nearly 100% in 2022 to under 40% by 2024.

Tinubu described the government’s tax reforms as one of its most significant achievements, raising the tax-to-GDP ratio from 10% to over 13.5% in just one year. He announced measures such as zero VAT on essential goods and services, tax waivers for key industries, and the establishment of a Tax Ombudsman to protect small businesses and vulnerable taxpayers.

He said the reforms led to over N6 trillion in additional state revenue in 2024, enabling subnational governments to meet salary obligations, reduce debts, and invest in infrastructure.

Tinubu stated that over 6,500 primary healthcare centres are being revitalised under the Renewed Hope Health Agenda. Cancer treatment centres, free dialysis programmes, and expanded maternal health initiatives are also in place. Health insurance coverage has grown from 16 million to 20 million in two years.

On education, the President cited increased access to quality learning through infrastructure investment and a student loan scheme for indigent students. He praised NASENI’s digital transformation and youth-focused innovation programmes like Innovate Naija and Irrigate Nigeria.

“These efforts are restoring dignity to work and creating a future of opportunity,” Tinubu declared.

The President listed extensive ongoing road and infrastructure projects across the country, including the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano road, and the Second Niger Bridge access road.

He affirmed agriculture and food security as top priorities, noting massive investments in mechanised farming, tractors, and fertiliser distribution.

Acknowledging persistent threats to national security, President Tinubu commended the armed forces for reclaiming territories from bandits in the Northwest and rescuing kidnap victims.

“Our administration is committed to the security and safety of our people. Without it, the economy cannot thrive,” he said.

He announced plans for the upcoming Motherland Festival, a global cultural showcase aimed at boosting tourism and reconnecting with the Nigerian diaspora. New policies like diaspora bonds and a non-resident BVN have also been introduced to facilitate investment and engagement from abroad.

ECOWAS at 50: President Tinubu, Delegates Gather in Lagos for Anniversary Celebrations

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 28, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Delegates from across West Africa have convened at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos for the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), marking a major milestone for the regional bloc dedicated to unity and integration.

Ahead of the main event, President Bola Tinubu, who currently serves as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, joined other dignitaries and ECOWAS officials at a commemorative gathering held at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), Victoria Island, Lagos.

Also in attendance is General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd), the only surviving founding leader of ECOWAS. Gowon played a pivotal role in the establishment of the bloc in 1975, following the signing of the original treaty in Lagos.

Following the NIIA event, heads of state, government officials, and ECOWAS representatives will proceed to Eko Hotel for the main celebration.

In a statement released earlier, presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga confirmed that President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, will deliver the welcome address.

President Tinubu is expected to reflect on ECOWAS’s achievements over the past five decades, while Prof. Bolaji Akinyemi, Chairman of the NIIA and a former Minister of External Affairs, will review the bloc’s 50-year journey. Panel discussions are also scheduled to further examine the regional body’s progress and challenges.

General Gowon is expected to participate in all ceremonies and deliver a keynote address at the Eko Hotel event.

Court Orders El-Rufai to Pay ₦900 Million for Unlawful Detention of Adara Elders

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 28, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

A Federal High Court in Kaduna has awarded ₦900 million in damages against the former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, and five others for the unlawful detention of Adara community elders in 2019.

Justice Hauwa’u Buhari, who delivered the judgment, ruled in favour of Awemi Dio Maisamari and eight other elders from the Adara community in Kajuru Local Government Area. The plaintiffs were detained following the murder of their traditional ruler, Raphael Maiwada Galadima.

El-Rufai, who was sued in his personal capacity, was found liable for ordering the arrest and detention of the elders.

The court dismissed preliminary objections raised by the respondents, who had argued that the Federal High Court lacked jurisdiction and that the matter was a tort case rather than one involving fundamental human rights.

Reacting to the judgment, lead counsel for the plaintiffs, Gloria Ballason, hailed the ruling as a significant stand against abuse of executive power.

“This judgment is a watershed moment in the fight against executive lawlessness and human rights violations. It reaffirms that public office holders can be held accountable even after leaving office,” she said.

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 28, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, has donated three acres of land to the International Council for Ifa Religion (ICIR) for the construction of the World Ifa Temple.

The donation, according to the ICIR, is aimed at promoting traditional religious practices and establishing what is expected to become the largest pilgrimage site for Yoruba traditional worshippers globally.

The development was announced on Wednesday in a statement issued by the President of the ICIR, Fayemi Fakayode, in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Fakayode described the gesture as a demonstration of the monarch’s deep commitment to Yoruba tradition, culture, and spirituality.

“This gesture of our revered first-class Oba has demonstrated his love for tradition and Yoruba culture and spirituality,” the statement read.

He added, “On behalf of the Council of Araba and Oluwo, under the chairmanship of His Eminence, Awodotun Aworeni, the Araba/Olu-Isese Agbaye, and all practitioners of Ifa and Orisa worldwide, we thank His Imperial Majesty, Oba Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, for this good and historic gesture.”

Fakayode further noted that the temple would stand as a symbol of Ooni’s dedication to preserving and promoting the cultural and spiritual legacy of the Yoruba people.

“This project is going to be the largest World Ifa Temple across the world, and it will serve as a major pilgrimage site for practitioners of Oduduwa’s spirituality across the globe,” he stated.

Video: Angry Nigerians order arrest of Speed Darlington for sleeping with 15-year old

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 28, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Controversial Nigerian rapper Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlington or Akpi, has sparked widespread anger across Nigeria after confessing on a live stream to engaging in sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl in a hotel on Children’s Day, May 27, 2025.

The admission, which included claims of enticing the minor with 2,000 Naira, has ignited a firestorm of criticism on social media platform X, with many Nigerians labeling the act as rape and child prostitution, and calling for his immediate arrest and prosecution.

In a series of posts on X, users expressed shock and disgust, with some accusing the rapper of predatory behavior. One user, @lotxnna, wrote, “Speed Darlington needs to be arrested and charged with rape of a minor. He confessed unprovoked to raping a 15-year-old girl in a hotel recently.

He also enticed her with 2000 Naira which is child prostitution.” Another user, @kelechicollin13, shared a video allegedly showing Darlington confessing to sexual encounters with minors, including a 14-year-old, and urged authorities such as the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (@Lagosdsva) and the Nigeria Police (@PoliceNG) to take action, stating, “Here is a pedophile right in front of you.
He needs to be arrested asap.”

The confession, reportedly made during a live stream, has fueled accusations of selective outrage, with @BENNY7GG
noting, “Speed Darlington really said he made out with a 15-year-old on Children’s Day and Nigerians are still yet to call for his arrest, some are even laughing.

Just another obvious example that selective outrage is a thing.” Others, like @Chiomabonny, expressed frustration with Nigeria’s legal system, stating, “I hope Nigerian police will see this video and take action.

Speed Darlington is a pedo, and he is admitting to sleeping with a minor. Nigeria is a curse.”

The timing of the confession on Children’s Day, a national holiday dedicated to celebrating and protecting children, has further amplified public outrage.

Users such as @YarKafanchan emphasized the severity of the situation, posting, “Speed Darlington admitted to r*ping a 15-year-old child in Nigeria.

This is not a joke, he said it on camera. Please don’t be lax with your job, he shouldn’t be walking free.”

As of now, no official statement has been released by the Nigeria Police or other authorities regarding the latest allegations against Darlington.

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency and the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (@naptipnigeria), tagged by several X users, have yet to confirm whether an investigation has been launched.
