Nigeria ranked 7th most dangerous country for Christians in 2025 – Report

by Folarin Kehinde June 16, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Nigeria has once again been named one of the most dangerous countries in the world to be a Christian, ranking seventh globally in the 2025 World Watch List released by Open Doors, an international watchdog organisation that monitors Christian persecution worldwide.

Despite dropping one position from the previous year, Nigeria remains the most violent country for Christians, accounting for nearly 69 percent of all faith-related killings globally.

According to the report, 3,100 out of the 4,476 Christians killed for their faith worldwide in 2024 were Nigerians.

The report identifies Islamist extremist violence, militant herder attacks, and government inaction as key drivers of Christian persecution across Nigeria, particularly in the northern and Middle Belt regions. Boko Haram, Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), and armed Fulani militias continue to target Christian communities with deadly precision.

In Plateau State, at least 200 people were killed in late December 2023 in what has been described as one of the bloodiest attacks on Christian farming communities.

More recently, in April 2025, gunmen suspected to be Fulani herders killed over 40 villagers in Bokkos Local Government Area, also in Plateau State.

In Benue, over 150 people have been reported dead this year alone following a resurgence of attacks that have displaced thousands.

Open Doors noted that the violence goes beyond killings. Christian women and girls face abduction, rape, and forced conversion, particularly in rural areas. Churches have been burned, villages razed, and survivors forced into Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps that often lack adequate food, healthcare, or protection.

“Christian communities in Nigeria continue to live under the constant threat of attacks. The government has not only failed to stop the violence but has in many cases been complicit through silence or inaction,” said an Open Doors spokesperson.

President Bola Tinubu’s administration has promised increased investment in security and has appointed new military chiefs.

However, civil society groups and international observers say the federal government has done little to hold perpetrators accountable or prevent further attacks.

Critics also point to structural issues such as climate-related migration, ethnic tensions, and poor law enforcement that have compounded the crisis.

In some northern states, Christians reportedly face institutional discrimination, including restrictions on church construction, denial of political representation, and economic exclusion.

The World Watch List ranks countries based on the intensity of persecution faced by Christians in five areas: private life, family life, community life, national life, and church life. Nigeria scored particularly high in violence-related metrics.

Other countries in the top 10 include North Korea (1st), Somalia (2nd), Yemen (3rd), Libya (4th), Sudan (5th), and Eritrea (6th).

Despite the grim outlook, Christian advocacy groups say they are committed to providing trauma care, humanitarian relief, and legal support for victims.

“There is a genocide going on against Christians in Nigeria, and the world cannot continue to look away,” said Jeff King, president of International Christian Concern.

President Tinubu Wades Into Osun Local Government Crisis

by Nelson Ugwuagbo June 16, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

There are credible reports from the State House Abuja today that President Bola Tinubu has waded into the leadership and judicial crisis rocking Osun local government with a view to immediately politically resolve the matter.

A top flight source in the know of the matter hinted that the President had called for the file on the Osun local government issue soon after the visit of the Adelekes to his Bourdillon residence.

The President was reported to have expressed displeasure that the full story of the local government crisis was not related to him.

After reviewing the file, the Number One Citizen is reported to have resolved to wait for the outcome of the APC case seeking to relist its appeal against the outstanding judgement sacking the APC Yes /No chairmen.

The ruling of the Court of Appeal dismissing the relisting attempt by the state APC accounts for what the source called the President’s new attention.

According to the source, the President is seeking a middle ground especially as it is now established that the APC chairman were elected in violation of the electoral act, the basis of which the court sacked them originally.

It is however not clear what the middle ground is going to be.

It is also not clear whether the President is going to call a mediating team involving the state government.

“Mr President has waded into the matter. Baba believed all are his children and the matter needs to be brought to a close without further delay”, the source privy to the issue but not authorized to speak publicly hinted at on our news platform.

753 Abuja Duplexes: Court Grants Emefiele ₦2bn Bail

by Folarin Kehinde June 16, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Justice Yusuf granted the bail after Emefiele was arraigned on an eight-count charge in which he is accused of among others, unlawfully acquiring a housing estate comprising 753 units, allegedly stealing and taking control of billions of naira in proxy accounts.

In the ruling, Justice Yusuf noted that Emefiele had been granted bail in three other criminal cases pending against him and that there was no evidence that he had jumped bail.

He then proceeded to admit him to bail on the condition that he must produce two sureties, who must own property worth ₦ 2 billion in either Asokoro, Maitama or Wuse 2 within the jurisdiction of the court.

Justice Yusuf ordered Emefiele to submit his travel documents to the court and directed that he must perfect the bail by Wednesday, failing which he would be remanded in custody.

The ruling was on the bail application moved by his lawyer, Matthew Burkaa, which was not objected to by prosecuting lawyer, Rotimi Oyedepo, who urged the court to impose additional conditions different from the ones earlier given by the other courts.

Vanguard Faces Backlash for Front-Page Focus on Tinubu, Wike Water Project Amid Benue Massacre

by Nelson Ugwuagbo June 16, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Vanguard Newspaper has ignited widespread criticism for its decision to prioritize a front-page story on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike commissioning a water supply project in Abuja, while the gruesome killings in Benue State over the weekend were relegated to lesser coverage.

The attacks, which took place in Daudu and Yelewata communities of Guma Local Government Area, claimed at least 59 lives, with local sources estimating up to 200 deaths, including military and civil defence personnel. The violence, attributed to suspected armed herdsmen, has intensified calls for urgent federal action to address the escalating insecurity in Benue.

The choice of Vanguard’s front-page headline on Monday, June 16, 2025, drew sharp reactions on social media, particularly on X, where users accused the newspaper of downplaying the tragedy to favor political optics. One user, @Winningmindset7, expressed dismay, stating, “Over 200 people killed in Benue, and Vanguard’s front page is about Tinubu and Wike’s water project? This is shameful.” Another, @pereyiii, questioned whether political influence swayed the editorial decision, asking, “Has Tinubu’s APC bought Vanguard’s silence on the Benue massacre?”

The Benue killings, described by witnesses as brutal and systematic, involved homes being torched and entire families slaughtered. President Tinubu responded on Sunday, condemning the “senseless bloodletting” and directing security chiefs to restore peace, as stated by his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga.

However, the federal government’s response has been criticized as inadequate, with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and civil society groups like HURIWA demanding stronger measures, including declaring a state of emergency in Benue to curb the recurring violence.

2027: We will vote Atiku if Shettima is dropped – APC members threaten as Crisis rocks Party

by Folarin Kehinde June 16, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Tension gripped Sunday’s All Progressives Congress North‑East stakeholders’ meeting in Gombe after delegates threatened to back former Vice President Atiku Abubakar if current Vice President Kashim Shettima is removed from President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 ticket.

The gathering at the International Conference Centre was intended to reaffirm support for Mr. Tinubu’s second‑term bid, but erupted in chaos when Zonal Vice Chairman Mustapha Salihu concluded his speech without mentioning Shettima. Video footage showed an enraged party member hurling a chair at Salihu as he fled the stage, while another delegate lobbed a plastic bucket in protest.

Salihu had told the audience, “We have no business not supporting this party with all the juicy appointments and responsibilities given to us by this government. I would want all members of the zonal executive committee to stand up so that we will do the proper endorsement, because it is the zonal executive committee that holds the ticket. We want to reaffirm and also adopt the endorsement earlier done by the national working committee, that Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is endorsed to be a sole candidate for the 2027 election.”

The omission prompted a chorus of “Shettima! Shettima! Shettima!” and swift intervention by security operatives. “It’s an insult to the entire region that our own son, the Vice President, was not even mentioned,” fumed a Borno delegate. “This is a calculated attempt to sideline Shettima, and we will resist it with everything we have.”

Before the fracas, the governors of Yobe, Borno and Gombe—Mai Mala Buni, Babagana Zulum and Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya—had each voiced their backing for the Tinubu‑Shettima ticket. Governor Yahaya declared, “The North‑East is fully behind the President and the Vice President. Their leadership has brought renewed hope to this region.”

LEADING REPORTERS learned that Despite that show of unity, APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje’s closing remarks failed to quell anger. Though he acknowledged Shettima—“we are proud of his deputy, his Vice President, it is one ticket according to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”—many delegates remained unconvinced and chanted, “No Shettima, no APC in the North‑East.”

Several threatened mass defection to the Peoples Democratic Party. “If Shettima is dropped, I will personally lead my people to vote for Atiku,” warned an Adamawa chieftain. “We won’t be taken for granted.”

The meeting ended abruptly as dignitaries exited amid shouts and chairs being thrown. Outside, police deployed teargas to disperse hundreds of agitated party faithful. An eyewitness, James Abass, warned, “This is more than just a misunderstanding. It’s a sign of serious internal divisions within the ruling party that could trigger mass defections or the rise of a counter‑movement if not urgently addressed.”

A source familiar with the zonal working committee disclosed that all North‑East NWC members—except Mustapha Salihu—had formally supported Tinubu and Shettima. The lone dissenting voice, the source said, was Salihu himself, against four colleagues who backed the joint ticket.

Nigerians Slam President Tinubu’s Tone Deaf Reaction To Benue Massacre

by Nelson Ugwuagbo June 16, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Nigerians have unleashed a wave of criticism against President Bola Tinubu following his statement on the brutal massacre of over 200 people in Yelwata, Benue State, on June 13-14, 2025.

The attack, widely blamed on suspected armed herders, targeted mostly internally displaced persons sheltered at a Catholic mission. Across social media and civil society, citizens have slammed the president’s response as cold, tardy, and misguided, particularly for suggesting reconciliation with those many call terrorists.

Tinubu’s statement, issued late on Sunday, June 15, through his media aide Bayo Onanuga, condemned the killings as “inhuman and anti-progress” and instructed security chiefs to restore order in Benue. He also urged Governor Hyacinth Alia to convene “reconciliation meetings and dialogue among the warring parties” to foster peace between farmers, herders, and communities.

But the remarks have sparked outrage, with many pointing out the president’s 48-hour silence after the tragedy, especially when global figures like Pope Leo XIV had already spoken out. The Pope, during his Sunday Angelus on June 15, prayed for the victims, calling the attack a “terrible massacre” and urging “security, justice, and peace” in Nigeria. Amnesty International Nigeria also condemned the killings on June 14, amplifying the issue internationally.

On X, Nigerians expressed frustration over the delay. “Tinubu’s government is the true definition of eye service, rushing to comment on foreign issues for global attention, but mute when Benue people are being slaughtered,” wrote @AdaIgbo00.

The tone of Tinubu’s statement has drawn particular scorn, with critics arguing it lacked compassion for the victims’ families or acknowledgment of the attack’s brutality against defenseless women, children, and displaced persons. “That statement from Tinubu would crush the hearts of Benue people instead of soothing them,” posted @Chiemela.

“Calling it a conflict, talking about reconciliation, people making inflammatory statements, and reprisal? For people murdered in their sleep? I couldn’t believe what I was reading.”

The call for reconciliation has been especially contentious, with many rejecting the idea of dialogue with perpetrators of such violence. “Tinubu may be the most callous, insensitive, incompetent president in the world,” wrote @SamdGreat01.

“200 of your citizens were murdered by terrorists in Benue, and 48 hrs after you’re telling us you have been briefed… You released a statement shifting responsibilities on others.”

Civil society groups have echoed these sentiments. The Global Coalition for Security and Democracy in Nigeria referenced Tinubu’s earlier insensitivity during a Yobe attack, accusing him of prioritizing foreign trips over domestic crises.

Catholic priests in Makurdi Diocese, who have lost over 15 parishes to attacks, called on Tinubu to declare war on the perpetrators rather than advocate for dialogue. The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, which previously criticized the government for failing to protect lives, condemned the “utterly barbaric” attacks, accusing federal and state authorities of neglecting their duty.

The contrast with Pope Leo XIV’s swift and heartfelt response has deepened public frustration. The Pope’s remarks, delivered before a global audience at the Vatican, underscored the targeting of rural Christian communities, while Tinubu’s delayed reaction has been seen as evidence of his disconnect. “Even the Pope reacted before our own president,” one X user lamented.

Demands for action are growing louder, with many calling for a state of emergency in Benue to address the escalating violence. The Guardian Nigeria reported, “Even though President Tinubu spoke out on Sunday, people say his words are not enough.”

Critics argue his directive to security chiefs and call for reconciliation meetings sidestep the root causes, including allegations of security forces’ complicity. Catholic priests in Benue have accused the military of inaction, noting attacks near checkpoints.

Katsina Govt to open literacy classes for repentant bandits

by Folarin Kehinde June 15, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Katsina State Government has announced plans to open literacy classes for repentant bandits in the state, as part of efforts to reintegrate them into the society.

The Executive Director of the state’s Agency for Mass Education, Hajiya Bilkisu Muhammad-Kakai revealed this to newsmen in Katsina on Sunday.

She said: “The agency is ready to deploy facilitators to run the classes, where both Islamic and western education will be offered to change their behaviour and lifestyle.

“We will liaise with Local Government Chairmen to open the classes in phases. The core subjects are islamic and western education.”

The executive director, who reviewed the performance of the agency within the last six months, said the agency had opened 68 new adult education classes.

Muhammad-Kakai further explained that government had also opened a Basic Post Literacy Class at Katsina Correction Centre.

“The Basic Post Literacy Class is to assist enrolled inmates to reach up to university to obtain a degree certificate,” she added.

According to her, she toured all the local government areas and inspected adult education classes and women centres to assess their condition.

She said the state government had made financial provision in this year’s budget to address problems facing them.

Muhammad-Kakai also commended Gov. Dikko Radda for supporting the agency to carry out its mandate.

She used the medium to appeal to members of the National Assembly from the state to work with the agency to open more adult literacy and women centres.

The National Assembly members should provide some percentage of their constituency allowance for the running of adult education classes in their areas to wipe out illiteracy,” she pleaded.

The News Agency of Nigeria+NAN), recalls that on several occasions, Gov. Radda vowed not to seek for any dialogue with the bandits, except when they willingly surrender.

However, in recent time, there were series of dialogues which was reportedly facilitated by some forces from the federal level.
