N210tn Probe: Senate Blasts NNPCL for Absence, Vows Constitutional Action

by Nelson Ugwuagbo June 27, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Nigerian Senate Committee on Public Accounts has issued a 10-day ultimatum to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) following the company’s failure to appear before lawmakers probing alleged financial discrepancies amounting to over N210 trillion in its audited financial reports from 2017 to 2023.

Despite being formally summoned, NNPCL officials and external auditors failed to attend Thursday’s session. In contrast, representatives from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), and the Department of State Services (DSS) were present.

Reading a letter dated June 25 from NNPCL’s Chief Financial Officer, Dapo Segun, the committee was informed that the company’s top executives were away on a management retreat. The letter also requested a two-month extension to enable the collation of relevant documents and responses.

“Having carefully reviewed your request, we hereby request your kind consideration to reschedule the engagement for two months from now… Members of the board and senior management team are currently out of the office for a retreat,” the letter stated.

Lawmakers, however, rejected the request, describing it as evasive and unacceptable.

Chairman of the committee, Senator Aliyu Wadada, insisted that NNPCL had already been served 11 specific audit queries and was only expected to provide oral responses.

“For an institution like NNPCL to ask for two months to respond to questions from its own audited records is unacceptable,” Wadada said. “If they fail to show up by July 10, we will invoke our constitutional powers. The Nigerian people deserve answers.”

Senator Abdul Ningi (Bauchi Central) stressed that the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPCL, Bayo Ojulari, who assumed office on April 2, 2025, must personally appear before the committee at the rescheduled session.

Supporting the stance, Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi (Ebonyi North) remarked that the request for more time appeared to be an attempt to evade accountability.

“We will still grant them a fair hearing, but they must appear by July 10,” Nwebonyi said.

Senator Victor Umeh (Anambra Central) issued a stern warning to NNPCL: “If they fail to appear again, Nigerians will know the Senate is not a toothless bulldog.”

Tinubu Conference Centre Already booked till 2027 – Wike

by Folarin Kehinde June 26, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Federal Capital Territory FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, has again defended the decision of the President Bola Tinubu administration to renovate the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja, saying in spite of the criticisms, the structure has now been booked till 2027.

He said he is trying to adjust the timetable to see how the FCT Administration can accommodate an application by the House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review to use the place.

The minister spoke on Thursday during the commissioning of the Kugbo Bus and Taxi Terminal.

The Prince of Plunder: Wike Grants $3.6bn Abuja Lands to Son

by Folarin Kehinde June 26, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Last Christmas, Nyesom Wike challenged Nigerians who accused him of stealing lands from everyday citizens for himself and his cronies under his purported policy against dormant allocations to come forward with evidence.

According to Peoples Gazette, it appeared the Abuja minister knew his accusers were onto something, but brushed aside those allegations because he had no expectation of being exposed—or ever facing the consequences of his brazen corruption.

Peoples Gazette is still poring through a cornucopia of Abuja land allocations signed by Mr Wike since he assumed office in August 2023. Still, our early review has demonstrated how the minister prioritised allotments to his immediate family members, spurning federal regulations against abusing public office for personal enrichment.

While the legislation controlling land administration did not appear to contain sections that specifically ban a minister in charge of the federal capital from granting a piece of land to a family member, the transactions Mr Wike approved for his son were far-reaching and systemic enough to constitute illicit self-dealing, according to two officials in the minister’s office.

Because The Gazette found that Mr Wike did not pay ground rent, title registration and survey fees for the assets, his action also contravenes the code of conduct for public officers as enumerated in the Nigerian Constitution’s Fifth Schedule.

Joaquin Wike, the minister’s last of two sons, has received at least 2,000 hectares, or 40,000 plots, in Maitama, Asokoro, Guzape and other parts of Abuja, The Gazette found from documents and officials.

Officials estimated that the hectares Mr Wike has issued to his son, along with certificates of occupancy, are worth at least $3.6 billion. A plot in Maitama and Asokoro, where Mr Wike gave his son at least seven hectares total, was recently sold for $1.28 and $1.4 million, respectively, according to documents reviewed by The Gazette.

Mr Wike’s action was so brazen that when aides told him he needed to exercise caution, he dismissed their warnings, saying he wanted his children to be the largest landowners in the nation’s capital.

When we told the minister in April that he needed to slow down on frequent allocations to his own children, he said he was just starting because his goal was to make them the largest landowners in Abuja,” an aide said, discussing the minister’s conduct under anonymity. “We’ve worked with ministers before him, but we have never seen anything even remotely comparable to this.”

Most of the allocations are in developing communities, such as Kwaita, Bwari, and Gaduwa, where sources said Mr Wike carefully selected them for their medium to long-term commercial prospects.

While it was unclear when the scheme was devised, documents showed Mr Wike started allocating the lands to Joaquin days after a company named after him was registered in October 2024.

The company, Joaq Farms and Estates Ltd, was registered on October 10, 2024. Barely a week later, on October 17, 2024, Mr Wike allocated 350 hectares to the business via file number 155882 and certificate of occupancy number 0000162.

The company listed its address as 13, Thaba Tseka Street, Wuse II, with Thaba mispelled on the documents as Theba. The address has long been associated with Mr Wike and his numerous fronts in the Nigerian capital, The Gazette learnt.

On February 25, 2025, Mr Wike approved at least six certificates of occupancy for lands allocated to Joaquin across the Federal Capital Territory, according to records reviewed by The Gazette. The documents were in file series 159134, 159136, 159137, 159138, 159139 and 159140. While The Gazette could not obtain file 159135, officials said its allocation also went to Joaq Farms.

As recently as May 30, Mr Wike personally signed the allocation of about 2.3 hectares for his son in Gaduwa District, where development has intensified in recent years.

The minister also seized land in the Central Area that was previously granted to the Austrian mission in Nigeria, reallocating the lucrative assets to himself.

The Gazette’s review showed Mr Wike allocated roughly 2,082 hectares to Joaq Farms between October 2024 and May 2025. Officials stated that Mr Wike approved more than 3,500 hectares for his son, but they were unable to provide the documents before this publication.

Officials said Joaquin can easily earn more than $3.6 billion on the assets, emphasising this was a conservative estimate.

“He has certificates of occupancy for all the lands, that’s what makes it even more lucrative,” an official said. The officials spoke under anonymity to avoid being targeted by Mr Wike, who’s an infamous alcoholic with a documented history of violence.

Officials stated that the minister has prioritised acquiring as many assets as possible, despite failing to pay the salaries of municipal employees.

Several departments under the Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, have gone several months without pay, including those attached to its broadcasting, environmental protection and water bureaus.

Little is known about the younger Wike, as he has kept a low profile since finishing high school in September 2020. However, in recent months, he has become a regular feature of his father’s public appearances, often alongside his elder brother, Jordan.

Mr Wike, who was Rivers’ governor from 2015 to 2019, said he was grooming his children to take over his political structure. He was sworn in as minister on August 21, 2023, after allegedly sabotaging his party, the PDP, to help President Bola Tinubu eke out a victory in the February 2023 presidential election.

While Mr Wike has been a member of the Tinubu-led APC cabinet, he has refused to quit his membership of PDP, the country’s main opposition bloc, often using his position to drive the party from crisis to crisis.

The Gazette learnt that at least five plots out of the 2.3 hectares Mr Wike allocated to his son were seized from a middle-class family, who declined to comment to avoid being further targeted by the minister, even on the new property they relocated to.

A spokesman for Mr Wike said he was unaware of the minister’s use of public office to advance personal wealth.

I am not aware of any development as such and can’t give comments on what I don’t have knowledge of,” Lere Olayinka said, declining to elaborate or say whether or not he had discussed the matter with his principal.

How much the president knew about Mr Wike’s reckless looting of lands across the federal capital remained unclear. A State House source said Mr Wike’s behaviour had raised severe concern for the administration, but there was no clear way of dealing with him yet.

“Let me be honest with you and tell you that Nyesom Wike is a serious liability to the Tinubu administration,” an aide to the president said. “While we’re focused on tackling the economy and insecurity, he’s busy seizing lands from Abuja residents and reallocating them to himself.”

The official said the president might not have the courage to deal with Mr Wike anytime soon, especially as he wouldn’t want to create a fissure within his ranks amidst a looming general election.

“The president would eventually have to decide on what to do with the minister,” the official said. “But predicting whether that is going to be before or after the election is beyond my service charge.”

Under existing laws, Mr Tinubu is the custodian of all lands across the Nigerian capital. At the same time, the minister, appointed by the president, acts as the administrator executing the president’s priorities for the territory.

Anti-corruption campaigner Patience Okonkwo said Mr Wike’s action should trigger an immediate and expansive probe of land administration under his watch.

“If I can speak on the documents I am seeing here, then I’d say this is unconscionable,” Mrs Okonkwo said after being shown the files by The Gazette. “This takes public graft to a new level, and consequences should be severe in a serious country.”

BREAKING: Tinubu rejects NDLEA bill over crime proceeds clause

by Folarin Kehinde June 26, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

President Bola Tinubu has declined to sign the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Bill, 2025 into law.

The President’s decision not to sign the bill passed by both chambers of the National Assembly was contained in a letter read in the Green Chamber on Thursday during plenary.

The President, citing Section 58(4) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), explained that the proposed law seeks to empower the NDLEA to retain a portion of the proceeds from drug-related crimes, a move he said contradicts existing financial regulations.

He noted that under the current system, “All proceeds of crime are paid into the government’s Confiscated and Forfeited Properties Account. Disbursements to any recovery agency, including the NDLEA, can only be made by presidential approval, subject to the consent of the Federal Executive Council and the National Assembly.”

The President maintained there was no compelling reason to alter a process designed to uphold accountability through executive and legislative oversight.

PDP reinstates Wike’s Ally, Anyanwu, as National Secretary

by Folarin Kehinde June 25, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reinstated Samuel Anyanwu as its National Secretary.

Ambassador Iliya Damagum, Acting National Chairman of the party, announced this at a press briefing which held at the PDP headquarter in Abuja, on Wednesday.

Damagum, flanked by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, former Senate President Bukola Saraki, and other stakeholders, said the decision to accept Anyanwu into the National Working Committee(NWC), “was difficult”.

He also said the planned NEC meeting had been canceled.

He said, “We will have an expanded Caucus, at the next Caucus we will take a decision leading to a proper NEC.

“Anyanwu is resuming as the National Secretary, that is why I said it was a critical decision. Like INEC said they don’t have our notice, so what we will have on June 30th is an extended Caucus.”

The development comes after PDP leaders held a meeting with Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, on Tuesday.

Although neither INEC officials nor the opposition members agreed to speak with the press after the meeting, sources told Daily Trust that Yakubu asked the PDP to adhere to the Supreme Court judgement on the position of its national secretary.

The electoral body also told the PDP leaders comprising of governors, members of the National Working Committee (NWC) Board of Trustees (BoT), members and some lawmakers elected on the platform of the party, that it will only accept correspondences signed by the national chairman and national secretary of the party.

Tinubu would have been on the streets if he weren’t president – Ali Ndume

by Folarin Kehinde June 25, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The lawmaker representing Borno South Senatorial District, Ali Ndume has condemned the activities and policies implemented by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Ndume in an interview with Arise Television on Tuesday said that with the growing hardship, economic instability and insecurity across states in Nigeria, Tinubu would not have been silent if another person were to be the president.

Stating that the president is known as someone who does not hesitate to speak on issues of governance, Ndume said Tinubu would have led a protest if he were not in charge of the government.

“I am a son of nobody who became somebody without knowing anybody.

“Ask the president (Tinubu); I’m not his dependent, I’m his ally. If there’s one thing I like and I copied from Mr. President, you can get somebody to argue on that. If we were to swap positions and I were the president doing the same thing he is doing now, he would have been on the street.

“He has done it before, to protest, even if the government belongs to him. If the wrong thing is happening,” Ndume noted.

He also stated that he would continue to be on the side of truth irrespective of whose ox is gored.

“Even today, somebody from the government is saying, look, why don’t you come over, I will not come over, I am a Senator and under a real democratic setting, the president is supposed to lobby me on issues because he doesn’t have a vote for me, I have a vote for him.

“Whether in the Senate or the general elections. And you know? I strongly believe that this power or this position is God who will take it away from me, not anybody. But there’s a responsibility on me to always speak the truth,” he added.

Wanted Bandit Kingpin Ado Aleru Attends Peace Meeting in Katsina

by Folarin Kehinde June 16, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Ado Aleru, a wanted bandit leader, has resurfaced at a peace meeting in Bichi community, Danmusa LGA of Katsina state.

Aleru, who has been on the police watchlist since 2020 with a N5 million bounty on his head, was seen in a video addressing community members, government officials, security personnel, and traditional leaders during the meeting held on Saturday.

Zagazola Makama, a counterinsurgency publication, reports that Aleru used the gathering to advocate peaceful coexistence between Fulani herders and farming communities.

Makama noted that the meeting was attended by personnel of the Nigerian Army (NA), Danmusa LGA officials, and religious and traditional leaders.

Aleru reportedly outlined steps that herders, farmers, and government actors must take to end bloodshed in the area.

The meeting has elicited condemnations across the state and on social media.

A top government source criticised the peace deal, calling it a betrayal of justice.

“Ado Aleru was declared wanted by police in this state under the leadership of CP Sanusi Buba,” the source told ThisDay.

“The command even placed a N5 million bounty on his head. He has made himself available now, they should go and arrest him to face the wrath of the law, but certainly not to negotiate with him because he is not sincere.”

Despite the backlash, Nasir Mua’zu, Katsina state commissioner for security and home affairs, defended the government’s involvement in the meeting.

Speaking to BBC Hausa, he said Aleru and seven other terrorist leaders had voluntarily surrendered and denounced terrorism.

He claimed they released 17 hostages as a goodwill gesture and promised to release the rest.

“We spent two years fighting these criminals, and the governor has made it clear that he will not negotiate with them,” Mua’zu said.

“But anyone who genuinely denounces banditry will be accepted and reintegrated into society.”

“Islamically, it is wrong for the government to continue fighting them since they accepted peace. And going by the Geneva Convention, it is also wrong to extend the fight after they came for dialogue.”
