The fire, which broke out late Tuesday night, raged for about three hours, leaving devastating destruction in its wake. Eyewitnesses said the blaze originated from stored sticks, locally known as kara, within the school premises.

Labour kicks, threatens nationwide shutdown over sack of 900 employees by Kaduna DISCO

by Folarin Kehinde February 5, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The ongoing industrial unrest in Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company, KADECO, over the sack of 900 employees has entered the third day crippling operations of the company with no signs of ending.

This came as the National Electricity Employees, NUEE, issued a January 10, deadline to KADECO recall all the sacked workers among others, threatening to escalate the industrial crisis to a national scale.
Recall has Monday sacked no fewer than 900 employees, promising to pay their benefits at no specified date.

NUEE in a statement by its Acting General Secretary, Dominic Igwebike, among others, said “We wish to draw the attention of the Company’s Management to the fact that embarking on such mass sack of their staff, who are our members.

Without recourse to the provision of the Company’s Conditions of Service is an insult to the Union and fragrant violation and disregard of Section 20 of the Nigeria Labour Act, which “requires an employer to notify the Trade Union or workers’ representative of the reasons for and the extent of the redundancy before terminating the employment of its staff on account of redundancy”.

“Also, it is a total violation of ILO Convention No.98, which clearly stipulates the “Right to Organise and Collective Bargaining.” This action of yours is totally unacceptable.”
Enumerating alleged sins of KADECO, before the present industrial crisis, NUEE said “Your unfair labour practices include no provision of medical services to the workers. Disregard to and Non-implementation of all signed Heads of Agreement with Management.
Non-remittance of five years pensions deductions to employees’

Retirement Saving Account.
Failure to pay exit packages for Retired workers five years after
retirement
“Non-promotion of deserving staff thereby stagnating them in one
position for more than five years.
Inadequate provision of working tools and materials. Failure to pay Death Benefits to families of deceased staff.
Non-payment of Electricity Rebate to staff. Non-implementation of National Minimum Wage.

“We demand the KADECO Management to withdraw these sack letters, rescind its earlier decision and return to status quo ante and be ready to address all outstanding labour issues in the Company with the Union through dialogue and the spirit of collective bargaining to avert the looming danger Management action has posed to the Sector.

“Consequently, if by Monday, 10th February, 2025, these sacked workers are not recalled and other pending labour issues are not resolved, we shall have no choice but to escalate our protest against this gross injustice to all the Electricity companies across the country.

“Nigerians and the general public are therefore put on notice of the impending crisis and the Management of Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company should be held responsible for anything that will happen to the already fragile state of the electricity sector in the country.”

I now survive on monthly allowance from my children – Fmr Minister Lament

by Folarin Kehinde February 5, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Former Communication Minister Adebayo Shittu has decried the high poverty rate in the country, saying many Nigerians have become beggars.

Shittu, while appearing on an AIT programme, Focus Nigeria, cited examples of how Nigeria’s economic condition has turned citizens into beggars adding that he
now survive on the monthly allowance his 10 graduate children give him for upkeep.

The ex-minister, who lives in Ibadan, contrary to Nigerians’ beliefs about political appointees, the ex-minister, who served under the Muhammadu Buhari administration from 2015 to 2019, said he currently doesn’t have money because he didn’t steal while in office.

He said post-political appointment life can be challenging for politicians who didn’t steal in office.

Meanwhile, Adebayo said a Nigerian called him from Bauchi to beg for N1,000 to feed, adding that another woman called him 30 times to beg for N3,000.

He said, “Yesterday, before I left Ibadan, somebody phoned me from Bauchi and begged me for N1,000.

He said he had not eaten for two days. Again, about a week ago, somebody also called me, a woman who wanted N3,000. At the time she wanted that money, unbelievably, I myself didn’t have that money, and the woman called me 30 times in one day.”

He maintained that poverty had been weaponized in the country to the extent that when politicians go to the people for votes, they tend to be more interested in what the politicians can give them rather than what they are capable of doing.

Shittu said, “It’s not my business to douse the poverty of such people calling. So when you go to such people to ask for their votes or support, they don’t care what you’re capable of doing. What they are interested in is what they can get out of you today.”

by Folarin Kehinde February 5, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Federal Government on Tuesday February 4 announced its plan to begin tolling on the Abuja-Keffi-Akwanga-Makurdi Expressway.

The announcement which was made by the Minister of Works, David Umahi while inaugurating the new tolling regime at Garaku Toll Station, Nasarawa State, will range from N500 for saloon cars to N1,600 for multi-axle vehicles.

According to Umahi, the revenue generated from the new tolling system would be used for the maintenance of all Federal Roads across the country.

The minister who was represented by his junior colleague, Bello Goronyo described the road corridor as crucial for the economic, social, and strategic development of Nigeria.

He said, “The collection of tolls will generate much-needed revenue for the maintenance and expansion of our roads.

It is important to state that the Toll Order/Fee Schedule for the Abuja-Keffi-Akwanga-Lafia-Makurdi Federal Highway has been gazetted as follows: Saloon Cars would be tolled for N500; SUVs/Jeeps N800; minibuses N1000; and multi-axle vehicles, N1,600.

Lagos Assembly crisis: President Tinubu’s orders ignored as Meranda retains Speakership

by Folarin Kehinde February 5, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The crisis surrounding the removal of former Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, has deepened as the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos reportedly defied President Bola Tinubu’s directive to reinstate him.

Following a deadlocked meeting with lawmakers, GAC leaders visited Tinubu to brief him on the unresolved leadership tussle.

Despite the president’s alleged order for Obasa’s reinstatement, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda remains the substantive speaker, backed by a majority of lawmakers.

On January 13, 2025, 32 out of 40 Assembly members impeached Obasa in absentia over allegations of financial misappropriation, misconduct, and high-handedness.

His removal, however, has sparked a power struggle within the APC, with key figures in Tinubu’s camp reportedly opposing the decision.

The GAC, led by Pa Tajudeen Olusi, convened an emergency meeting on Monday at Lagos House, Marina, to address the crisis.

Lawmakers from Lagos West, who were expected to push for a new speaker to balance the state’s political structure, instead threw their full support behind Meranda, rejecting efforts to remove her.

Sources revealed to Vanguard that Tinubu, displeased with the outcome, had instructed the GAC to intervene and ensure Obasa’s return as a temporary measure before electing a new speaker.

However, conservative members within the GAC, led by Olusi, resisted the directive, causing further divisions within the ruling party.

Amid rising tensions, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has been accused of working behind the scenes to oppose Obasa’s reinstatement, despite appearing neutral in public.

Reports suggest that he encouraged lawmakers to stand firm against Obasa’s return, fueling speculation about a shifting power dynamic in Lagos politics.

With the crisis unresolved, the GAC has now taken the matter to Abuja for further deliberation, setting the stage for a high-stakes political showdown.
