JUST IN: Nigeria Makes List of world’s Most Corrupt Country in 2024, Gets New Ranking

by Folarin Kehinde February 11, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Nigeria has been ranked among the most corrupt countries in the world for 2024, according to a new report by Transparency International.

The latest Corruption Perceptions Index places Nigeria in the 36th position, alongside Uganda, Mexico, Madagascar, Iraq, and Cameroon, with a total score of 26 points.

This marks a slight improvement for Nigeria, as the country gained one point compared to its 2023 ranking.

The 2024 index, released on Tuesday, evaluates 180 countries based on public sector corruption and scores them on a scale of 0, meaning highly corrupt, to 100, meaning very clean. Denmark was ranked as the least corrupt country with 90 points, followed by Finland with 88 points and Singapore with 84 points. No African country made it to the top 10 least corrupt nations, as the list was dominated by European countries.

Cape Verde emerged as the least corrupt country in Africa, ranking 35th globally with 62 points. Meanwhile, South Sudan, Somalia, and Venezuela were ranked as the most corrupt countries in the world.

Speaking on the findings, Francois Valeria, Chair of Transparency International, stated that corruption remains a serious issue worldwide but noted that some countries have made progress. She emphasized that the 2024 Corruption Perceptions Index shows that corruption is a dangerous problem in every part of the world, but change for the better is happening in many countries.

Valeria, said, “The 2024 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) shows that corruption is a dangerous problem in every part of the world, but change for the better is happening in many countries.

“Research also reveals that corruption is a major threat to climate action. It hinders progress in reducing emissions and adapting to the unavoidable effects of global heating.

“The CPI ranks 180 countries and territories worldwide by their perceived levels of public sector corruption. The results are given on a scale of 0 (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean).”

Since assuming office, President Bola Tinubu has spoken about his commitment to fighting corruption. However, his approach differs from that of the previous administration of Muhammadu Buhari which rode to power on the promise of ending the deep-rooted corruption in the country. While past governments attempted direct crackdowns, Tinubu argues that corruption cannot be completely eradicated but should be minimized as much as possible.

“Corruption in all ramifications is bad. There is need to pay enough attention to the causes. Why are the people corrupt? The lack of social amenities, the lack of need in some areas lack of funding for children’s education.

“There are so many anti-corruption mechanisms to checkmate corrupt activities and to help people not to be corrupt,” he said in an interaction with the press late last year.

His government has introduced various policies aimed at closing loopholes that enable corruption, one of which is the removal of fuel subsidy payments.

Pressure mounts on President Tinubu to retain Mele Kyari as NNPC boss

by Folarin Kehinde February 11, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

President Bola Tinubu is reportedly under pressure to retain Mele Kyari aa the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC.

The president is said to be facing mounting pressure from civil society groups and stakeholders to retain Kyari, with some saying any change in the leadership of the NNPC could harm Nigeria’s oil sector.

At a press conference held at the Abuja Press Centre on Monday, February 10, Comrade Friday Maduka, Chairman of the Forum of Civil Society Organizations of Nigeria, warned against any attempt to remove Kyari.

His words: “Mele Kyari’s leadership at NNPC has been a beacon of hope and transformation in the oil sector.

“His vision, expertise, and dedication have yielded unprecedented results, including the renewed functioning of refineries, stabilization of oil prices, and a greater focus on sustainable economic integration and development.”

He reiterated that under Kyari’s leadership, the NNPC had experienced major reforms, including the company’s transition into a limited liability corporation, which significantly improved transparency and accountability.

Maduka expressed his concern over what he described as efforts driven by jealousy and envy, aimed at destabilizing the current leadership.

“In light of these achievements, it is puzzling that certain factors, driven by envy and jealousy, are seeking to undermine Mele Kyari’s leadership and the progress that has been made at NNPC.

“These underhand moves, campaigns, and shibboleths are not only a threat to the stability of the oil sector but also to the overall economic development of Nigeria,” Maduka stated.

Maduka emphasized the importance of allowing Kyari to complete his tenure, which began in 2023 and is scheduled to end in 2026 according to the extant laws governing the NNPC.

He argued that Kyari’s tenure is vital for the continued success of the corporation and the broader Nigerian economy.

“We strongly believe that he should be allowed to consummate his outstanding work, thereby enabling the NNPC to attain its full potential and reach unprecedented heights,” he added.

Maduka also referenced the legal framework that supports Kyari’s extended tenure, particularly the provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), which allows for a tenure extension beyond 2026.

He urged all Nigerians and civil society organizations to support Kyari in ensuring the sector continues to thrive.

“It is expected that it should terminate in 2027 in compliance with Section 59 (2) of the Petroleum Industry Act 2021 which states that ‘The Composition of the Board of the NNPC Limited shall be determined in accordance with the Companies and Allied Matters Act and its Articles of Association’,” Maduka explained.

He also lauded Kyari’s efforts in reducing fuel prices and promoting alternative energy solutions, particularly gas, as part of Nigeria’s broader energy strategy.

He further called for greater unity and collaboration across all sectors to maintain the momentum of progress at NNPC.

“Mele Kyari’s tenure has adroitly modulated the transition from the hitherto unbearable PMS Price regime to the incremental progressive lowering of the Petrol pump price by importuning all stakeholders to the imperative for lower pump fuel prices for all Nigerians,” he concluded.

JAMB Registrar Advocates Sharia Law for Southwest Muslims

by Nelson Ugwuagbo February 10, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, has called for the establishment of Sharia panels in the Southwest to serve the interests of Muslims in the region.

Oloyede, who also serves as the Secretary-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), urged leaders in the six states of the geopolitical zone to support the initiative, emphasizing that it would help foster sustainable peace.

Speaking on the Sunday edition of Inside Sources with Laolu Akande, a socio-political programme aired on Channels Television, Oloyede said there was nothing wrong with Muslims having Sharia courts in the Southwest.

“Recently, people are talking about Sharia Panels in the Southwest, and I was just smiling. I had never seen such a level of ignorance being displayed,” he said.

He noted that Sharia panels, which primarily handle marriage and inheritance disputes, have existed in the region for years. Citing Oyo State as an example, he referenced a PhD thesis on the subject written in 2007 by Prof. Makinde, now a professor at the University of Ibadan.

Oloyede dismissed concerns that the proposal could cause religious tension, stressing that Muslims, Christians, and traditional institutions in the Southwest have co-existed peacefully for generations.

“The matter is trivial, and unnecessary tension should not be built around it. However, Southwest Muslims bear a psychological burden for the peace and harmony in the region,” he added.

The former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin emphasized the need for continuous monitoring of religious coexistence to sustain peace, warning that failing to do so would mean living in the past.

Visa-Renewal: US scraps in-person interview for Nigerian applicants

by Folarin Kehinde February 10, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The United States, US has suspended its visa dropbox service in Nigeria, requiring all visitor visa applicants to attend in-person interviews for renewals.

The dropbox system previously allowed eligible applicants, particularly those with recent U.S. travel history, to submit passports without interviews, reducing wait times.

The removal of this option has sparked concerns over increased delays, as visa interview dates are already stretched over a year in some cases.

Many Nigerians, including students and business travelers, may now face disruptions to their travel plans.

While the U.S. Embassy has not provided an official explanation, some observers link the decision to the lingering impact of Donald Trump’s restrictive immigration policies.

His administration previously imposed travel bans on several African nations, including Nigeria, citing security concerns.

Nigeria Mourns Namibia’s Founding President Sam Nujoma

by Nelson Ugwuagbo February 10, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Nigerian government has extended its condolences to Namibia over the passing of Dr. Sam Nujoma, the country’s founding President and a key figure in its liberation struggle.

Nujoma, who led Namibia to independence from apartheid South Africa in 1990 and served as its first president for 15 years, passed away on Saturday at the age of 95.

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, in a statement on Sunday, described Nujoma as a towering figure in Africa’s fight for liberation and unity.

“The revolutionary leader who guided Namibia to independence and became its first president reportedly passed away peacefully in Windhoek,” the statement, signed by ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa, read.

Tuggar hailed Nujoma as a visionary leader, Pan-Africanist, and relentless freedom fighter who dedicated his life to the emancipation of Namibia from colonial rule.

“His unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and self-determination shaped Namibia’s destiny and inspired generations of Africans in the fight against oppression and injustice,” he said.

The minister also noted Nujoma’s role in laying the foundation for democracy, reconciliation, and development in Namibia, earning him global respect.

Nigeria, he added, shares in Namibia’s grief and remembers Nujoma as a true friend and steadfast ally in African solidarity.

“In this time of mourning, Nigeria stands in solidarity with the people of Namibia and reaffirms our commitment to strengthening the bonds of friendship and partnership between our two nations. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” Tuggar said.

Nujoma, Namibia’s first democratically elected president, prioritized national unity and implemented reconciliation policies that encouraged white Namibians to remain and contribute to the country’s economic growth.

Zamfara Governor Offers Conditional Dialogue With Bandits

by Nelson Ugwuagbo February 10, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has expressed willingness to negotiate with bandits on the condition that they cease attacks and surrender their weapons.

Speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa, Lawal said his administration was open to dialogue, provided it was based on truth and sincerity. This marks a shift from his government’s earlier stance against any negotiations with criminal groups.

“Dialogue is not entirely off the table, but it must be anchored on truth and honesty,” Lawal said. “Many people have suffered losses, including their parents and spouses. It is essential to address their plight rather than solely focusing on the bandits.”

The governor’s statement contrasts with the firm position taken in July 2024 by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Mobilisation, Alhaji Faruk Ahmad, who had ruled out reconciliation with any bandit leader.

“We will not reconcile with any bandit leader. We will continue fighting them. Those willing to surrender should do so, and those who are not will be fought,” Ahmad had said.

Governor Lawal also highlighted recent successes in the state’s security operations, stating that over 50 terrorists were killed on Friday in Tungar Fulani, along the Zurmi/Shinkafi axis. He added that several notorious bandit leaders linked to Bello Turji, including Sani Mainasara, Sani Black, and Kachallah Auta, had been eliminated.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sustaining the fight against criminal elements. “They should either lay down their weapons or we continue with our decisive action against them,” he said.

Protest in Rivers Community After Police Officer Shoots Man Dead

by Nelson Ugwuagbo February 10, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

A protest broke out in the Omagwa community, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, following the alleged extra-judicial killing of a youth by a police officer.

The incident occurred when a policeman attached to the Omagwa Division of the Rivers State Police Command reportedly shot and killed Chikuma Egbule, a native of the community.

The killing sparked immediate outrage, with protesters initially attempting to deposit Egbule’s body at the Omagwa Divisional Police Station. However, they were resisted by officers at the station. The demonstrators then blocked the highway leading to the Port Harcourt International Airport and Owerri, Imo State, causing heavy gridlock.

Reacting to the development, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed that the officer involved had been arrested, and the deceased’s body had been taken to the morgue.

“The command is aware, and the Commissioner of Police is on top of the situation. Normalcy has now been restored, and adequate security is in place to prevent any breach of peace,” she said in a WhatsApp message.

She added that the officer responsible had been detained while an investigation into the incident was ongoing.

IPOB: Judge Postpones Nnamdi Kanu’s Trial Indefinitely

by Nelson Ugwuagbo February 10, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned the trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), indefinitely.

Justice Binta Nyako adjourned the case on Monday following Kanu’s insistence that she could not preside over the matter, citing her previous recusal.

Kanu, who arrived at the court premises under the escort of operatives of the State Security Service (SSS) at about 8:30 a.m., objected to the trial proceeding under Justice Nyako.

His lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, told the court that Kanu maintained his position that Justice Nyako should recuse herself from the case. He noted that the IPOB leader had earlier requested the judge’s withdrawal on September 24, 2024, leading to her initial recusal.

However, the prosecuting counsel, led by Adegboyega Awomolo, informed the court that the prosecution was ready to proceed with its witnesses.

Justice Nyako responded that the Chief Judge had not accepted her recusal and had referred the case back to her for trial. She directed the defence team to submit a formal application if they wished to pursue the request for recusal.

Kanu has been in SSS custody since 2021 and is facing charges of terrorism and treasonable felony linked to his separatist activities.

IPOB, which advocates for the secession of the southeastern region from Nigeria, was proscribed and designated a terrorist organization by the Nigerian government in 2017. The group recently challenged its proscription at the Supreme Court.
