Tinubu Determined to Hold Onto Power at All Costs โ€“ Atiku

by Nelson Ugwuagbo February 18, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Former Vice President and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) under President Bola Tinubu of attempting to retain power through undemocratic means.

In a statement personally signed by him, Atiku alleged that the Tinubu-led APC was using political brigandage and subversion to undermine Nigeriaโ€™s democracy.

He was reacting to the crisis in Osun State, which resulted in the death of one person, and the invasion of the Lagos State House of Assembly by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the police.

Atiku claimed that the APC orchestrated an attack on the democratic process in Osun by attempting to take over local government secretariats using force. He commended the people of Osun for resisting what he described as an attempt to suppress democracy.

He further called on security agencies deployed for the elections to uphold professionalism and avoid being used as political enforcers.

โ€œThese are dangerous times. The APC has abandoned any pretense of democratic legitimacy, resorting instead to brute force in its bid to cling to power,โ€ he stated.

Atiku warned that Nigerians must resist any attempts to subvert democracy, adding that the country demands governance, not chaos.

He urged Tinubu and his administration to put an end to what he described as reckless political sabotage, insisting that Nigerians would not allow their democracy to be hijacked.

Labour Party: 2027 Presidential Ticket Not Zoned to South-East

by Nelson Ugwuagbo February 18, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Labour Party (LP) has dismissed claims that its 2027 presidential ticket has been zoned to the South-East.

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, the party clarified that comments attributed to its National Chairman, Julius Abure, were misinterpreted.

“Labour Party is a national party with a broad support base across the country, and as such, the issue of zoning does not arise,” the statement read.

Ifoh explained that Abure had only urged South-East members at a gathering on Saturday to engage other regions in building political alliances to enhance their chances of securing the presidency.

He cited the Yoruba political blocโ€™s success in past elections as an example of how strategic realignments could improve electoral prospects.

“In the 2023 general elections, the party secured victories in both northern and southern states, and we are working to surpass that achievement in future elections,” Ifoh added.

He emphasized that all candidates would emerge through a competitive and democratic process, as the party’s constitution does not support zoning.

“We regret the misinterpretation of our partyโ€™s position by a section of the media. The Labour Party was quoted out of context,” the statement said.

The LP fielded former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi as its presidential candidate in the 2023 election, where he finished third behind President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

JUST IN: IGP Egbetokun Deploys Tactical Squads to Osun State Following Bloody Clash

by Folarin Kehinde February 18, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has ordered the deployment of more tactical squads to Osun State to strengthen security and restore peace after violent clashes.

The decision comes after a series of confrontations at various local government secretariats in the state.

Supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) engaged in a violent struggle for control over local government councils.

Tensions escalated following a court ruling that granted the APC control over several local government areas. Eyewitnesses reported that suspected APC supporters stormed government buildings in Osogbo and Olorunda, attempting to assert control. However, PDP supporters resisted, leading to the escalation of violence.

Reacting, the police boss condemned the violence. In a statement signed by Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, he vowed to bring those responsible to justice.

โ€œThe Police recognizes that violence undermines the democratic process and threatens the wellbeing of citizens, and hereby affirms its commitment to identifying and prosecuting the perpetrators of these acts, ensuring they face the full weight of the law,โ€ the statement read.

Egbetokun warned individuals disturbing the peace in Osun State. He declared that the Police Force will not tolerate any form of lawlessness, hooliganism, or acts of anarchy.

The IGP also called on residents, community leaders, and political stakeholders to reject violence and maintain peace. He urged all parties to respect the judiciary, emphasizing that legal disputes should be resolved through the courts rather than violence.

VIO returns to Abuja roads despite court restraining order

by Folarin Kehinde February 18, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Officials of the Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS) of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), popularly known as VIOs have taken to the streets of Abuja to commence e-ticketing for traffic offenders.

This act comes barely one year after a court in Abuja barred the VIO or its agents from arresting motorists or impounding their vehicles across the FCT.

However, speaking on the matter, Abdullateef Bello, the director of DRTS said officials of the agency are on the roads to enforce the e-ticketing initiative.

Urging residents to remain law abiding and respect traffic rules, Bello said the DRTS had appealed the judgement of the court.

He said the VIO has resorted to using technological devices which has legal backing.

โ€œIn compliance with the FCT Transportation Secretariatโ€™s strategy of e-enforcement and penalty system, the DRTS has today, Monday, February 17, 2025, commenced e-ticketing and central booking of traffic offenders.

โ€œAnd henceforth, all violators of traffic issues will now be booked electronically and they will be served with their tickets for seven days. If they fail to pay the fine, then the vehicle will be impounded henceforth.

โ€œWe are back on the road and we will now impound vehicles only when you fail to pay your fines within seven days. The DRTS will not be stopping vehicles at random now because the devices will select those that are not adequately in line with the position of law, and those are the ones we will be dealing with henceforth,โ€ Bello said.

The Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke has issued a directive urging all residents, including politicians, to stay away from local government secretariats to prevent further bloodshed and protect public assets.

This, he said, is in response to the violent clashes triggered by an alleged illegal takeover attempt by sacked APC chairmen and councillors.

Adeleke disclosed this in a message in he posted on his official X account on Monday evening.

“Following reports of a failed illegal takeover bid of local government councils in Osun by the sacked APC Chairmen and councillors, I hereby direct all Osun residents, including politicians across all political divides, to stay away from the local government secretariats to protect public properties and avoid further bloodshed,” the governor stated.

The directive comes as tensions remain high, with workers under the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees withdrawing their services across the state, effectively leaving the council secretariats under lock and key.

“This has become necessary, especially as the council secretariats are expected to be under lock and key due to the withdrawal of service announced by workers of the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) across the state,” he added.

Expressing grief over the casualties resulting from the crisis, the governor extended his condolences to the families of those affected.

“I equally condole families of victims of the APC illegal takeover bid and chaos unleashed across the state by the APC and their hired thugs.

“The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lost five members, with several others wounded. Two of those members are from Iragbiji, Boripe local government.

“Another two were killed at Ola Oluwa Local Government. Another one was lost at Ikire. We must stop further bloodshed,” his statement further noted.

According to the governor, in his bid to restore order and ensure safety, the governor directed security agencies to take full control of all local government secretariats.

“I have directed security agencies to take charge of all local government secretariats, and I hereby assure residents of Osun of their safety and protection of lives and properties,” he affirmed.

Niger Republic bars Nigerians with ECOWAS passport

by Folarin Kehinde February 18, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Republic of Niger has begun enforcing restrictions on Nigerians traveling with the ECOWAS passport, barring entry for those without a valid international passport.

This move follows the countryโ€™s recent withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States alongside Mali and Burkina Faso.

Despite maintaining an open border with Nigeria, new immigration measures are being implemented at crossings such as Illela (Nigeria) and Konni (Niger). Cross-border traders and commuters now face difficulties as Nigerien authorities refuse to recognize the ECOWAS passport as a valid means of identification.

Alhaji Mansur Abdullah, a trader who frequently travels between the two countries, confirmed the development.

He said, โ€œI believe there is a move to abolish the ECOWAS passport as a means of traveling here; they have started harassing us if we are entering the country.

โ€œSome of our people are being turned back home. We learnt that there is a new passport being issued now to everyone coming to Niger Republic to replace the old ECOWAS passport.

โ€œSome of our people are getting scared of the aftermath of all these issues, which have started to affect our business and trading activitiesโ€

According to a source in Taiwan, a state in Niger Republic, border officials have started turning back individuals relying solely on the ECOWAS passport.

โ€œSome of our people have already been sent home. The authorities insist on their own national passport, making it difficult for traders and travelers,โ€ he explained.

Abubakar Isa, a commercial driver on the Illela-Konni route, alleged that security officials in Niger have begun exploiting the situation to extort travelers.

โ€œThey demand between 5,000 to 10,000 CFA before allowing those with an ECOWAS passport to pass. If you canโ€™t produce Nigerโ€™s new identification document, they take you to their office and pressure you to pay a bribe..

โ€œOnce they stop either the vehicle or motorcycle at their border, they take you to their office and make the demand for the passport, which they know we donโ€™t have, they then collect money as bribe before you can be allow to go, โ€œ he added.

A trader in Illela, Alhaji Nuhu Abubakar, confirmed that Nigerโ€™s withdrawal from ECOWAS has had no immediate impact on trade or movement across the border.

He said, โ€œWe have continued our normal activities as usual, and there is no sign of an impending closure.

โ€œThe border remains open on both the Nigerian and Nigerien sides. Weโ€™ve heard rumours that the military junta in Niger is considering restricting motorcycle movement between the two countries, but for now, nothing concrete has been decided.โ€

Although official communication from the Nigerien government is yet to confirm a complete ban on ECOWAS passports, affected travellers fear that the situation could worsen, disrupting trade and movement across the border.

When contacted on Monday, Head of Communication ECOWAS Commission, Joel Ahofodji., said the regional bloc was unaware of Niger Republicโ€™s policy to bar ECOWAS passport holders.

written by Folarin Kehinde

The Ogun State Police Command, on Monday, declared controversial singer, Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as โ€œPortable,โ€ wanted for his involvement in a violent attack on government officials carrying out their lawful duties.

She said, โ€œUpon identifying themselves and requesting the approved building plan, the father informed them that his son was unavailable.

โ€œHowever, moments later, Portable, armed with a firearm and other weapons, and led a gang of nine thugs in a violent attack on the unarmed officials.

โ€œThe enforcement officers sustained various bodily injuries but managed to escape and reported the incident to the Ota Area Command, which subsequently escalated the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further action.

โ€œNine accomplices were arrested, but Portable fled the scene and has since gone into hiding.โ€

She added, โ€œMultiple formal invitations were sent to him, requesting his presence at the Ogun State Police Command Headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta, which he deliberately ignored without cause or legal representation.

โ€œFollowing his repeated evasion, the Ogun State Police Command has obtained a valid court order declaring him wanted.

โ€œMembers of the public are strongly advised to assist the police by providing any valuable information that can lead to his immediate arrest. Anyone found aiding or harbouring the suspect will face legal consequences.

โ€œFor any relevant information, kindly report to the nearest police station or contact the Ogun State Police Command through its official communication channels or police public relations department.โ€

Two weeks ago, the police had arraigned nine proteges of the famous singer before a Magistrate Court sitting in Isabo, Abeokuta, for allegedly assaulting officers of the Ota Zonal Planning office of the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development.
