FG bans 60,000-litre fuel tankers on roads from March 1

by Folarin Kehinde February 20, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a ban on fuel tankers exceeding 60,000 litres from operating on Nigerian roads.

The ban is expected to take effect from 1 March 2025, as revealed by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, NMDPRA.

The agency also specified that, by the fourth quarter of 2025, no truck with a capacity exceeding 45,000 litres will be permitted to load petroleum products.

Speaking to journalists on Wednesday in Abuja, Ogbugo Ukoha, NMDPRA Executive Director of Distribution Systems, Storage, and Retailing Infrastructure, stated that the decision was made in response to the rising number of road accidents involving heavy-duty petroleum tankers.

“The first stakeholders’ technical committee met today to establish timelines for about 10 resolutions aimed at addressing the significant increase in truck transit incidents and fatalities,” he said.

According to him, after deliberations involving key agencies—including the Department of State Services, DSS, Federal Fire Service, Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, National Association of Road Transport Owners, NARTO, National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, Standards Organisation of Nigeria, SON, the Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria, DAPPMAN, and NMDPRA—it was agreed that from 1 March 2025, any truck with an axle load exceeding 60,000 litres of hydrocarbons will not be allowed to load at any depot.

“The key point here is that, for the first time, consensus was reached among all stakeholders, and we will continue to work together cohesively to ensure the safe transportation of petroleum products across the country,” he said.

Ukoha dismissed recent claims questioning the quality of fuel in circulation across the country, describing them as bogus, misleading, and unscientific.

He assured Nigerians that all imported and locally refined petroleum products meet strict regulatory standards before being released into the market.

The regulator vowed to ensure compliance with petroleum industry standards and specifications, stressing that recent social media claims about the quality of fuel products in circulation are baseless and should be disregarded.

“The regulator would usually be more circumspect and not respond to every comment made in public,” he said.

written by Folarin Kehinde

The military has announced plans to release 381 rehabilitated ex-terrorists in March 2025, urging state governments to ensure their proper reintegration through monitoring and empowerment programmes.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja on Tuesday, the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, said a total 789 ex-combatants are undergoing rehabilitation, with 381 expected to graduate in 2025.

Represented by the Chief of Defence Policy and Plans, Air Vice Marshal Shayi Olatunde, Musa stressed the need for proper reintegration of the repentant terrorists to sustain the gains made by Operation Safe Corridor.

Represented by the Chief of Defence Policy and Plans, Air Vice Marshal Shayi Olatunde, Musa stressed the need for proper reintegration of the repentant terrorists to sustain the gains made by Operation Safe Corridor.

He urged the state governments to play an active role in the transition process by deploying security measures to track and monitor reintegrated individuals.

Musa said, “I, therefore, say that conforming law with localities ensures the proper integration of the first of two parties, consisting of 381 clients.

“It is also important to mention that upon graduation from this scheme, each client will be provided with some personal items as well as start-up pacts based on the three acquired, including their families

“ This is to enable them to set up small businesses and start a new life. Accordingly, I urge benefiting state governments to facilitate the seamless re-integration of the ex-combatants by providing additional support to ease the transitional process. We are very optimistic that working closely with local and traditional authorities, the state can deploy security apparatus at their disposal to effectively track and monitor the progress of the re-integrated ex-combatants.”

The Coordinator of Operation Safe Corridor, Brig. Gen. Y. Ali, said the programme has reintegrated no fewer than 2,190 repentant terrorists since its inception in 2016.

He added that the number included 27 foreign nationals who have been repatriated to their respective countries.

Ali disclosed that between July and November 2024, 825 new clients—including 14 foreigners from Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, and Niger—were transferred to the De-radicalisation, Rehabilitation, and Reintegration camp for training.

Ali added that 22 clients requiring further psychological evaluation were transferred to the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Maiduguri.

He said, “Since the commencement of the programme in 2016, OPSC has successfully processed 2,190 clients comprising 2,163 Nigerians and 27 foreign nationals from Cameroon, Chad and Niger. All the foreign clients were transferred to their respective national authorities for reintegration.

“Between July and November 2024, a total of 825 clients were transferred to the DRR Camp to commence training. Amongst them are 14 foreigners from Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad and Niger. It is also important to mention that 22 clients were subsequently transferred to the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Maiduguri for further evaluation and management.

JUST IN: Protests in Lokoja after fatal accident kills 7 University students

by Folarin Kehinde February 19, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Students of the Federal University Lokoja (FUL), Kogi State, have taken to the streets in a massive protest following the tragic death of seven students and a bus driver in a ghastly road accident involving a truck and a school shuttle bus.

The protest, which began on Tuesday and continued into Wednesday morning, saw students demanding immediate government action to prevent further tragedies on the roads around the university.

The fatal accident occurred around 2:30 PM on Monday, February 18, when an articulated truck carrying wood and jerrycans of palm oil lost control and crashed into a school shuttle bus filled with students.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as devastating, stating that the shuttle bus was preparing to transport students when the speeding truck rammed into it, crushing it completely. Seven students died on the spot, alongside the bus driver.

“The driver of the truck lost control and rammed into the school shuttle bus, which was already filled with students and set to leave. The impact was devastating,” a student told SaharaReporters.

In response to the tragedy, enraged students mobilized and blocked roads leading to the university, calling for the restriction of heavy-duty trucks from operating during the daytime.

The protesters gathered at the university gate, demanding urgent government intervention to improve road safety in the area.

Emergency responders, including officers of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), were deployed to the scene to rescue trapped victims.

Kogi State FRSC Sector Commander, Samuel Oyedeji, confirmed that while the exact number of casualties was still being determined, several bodies had been taken to the morgue, while the injured were rushed to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Lokoja, and the Kogi State Specialist Hospital for treatment.

The ongoing student protest has intensified calls for stricter traffic regulations to prevent further loss of lives.

A student protester said, “On Tuesday, we gathered at the school gate, demanding lasting measures to avert the recurrence of accidents on this road. The Kogi State Deputy Governor visited the university entrance today to sympathize with the aggrieved students and the university community.”

“The students are still out this morning (Wednesday), continuing the protest,” the student added.

ESUT Suspends Three Lecturers, Student Over Grade Manipulation, Extortion

by Nelson Ugwuagbo February 19, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The management of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) has indefinitely suspended three lecturers and a student over allegations of extortion, grade manipulation, and selling grades to students.

The affected lecturers are Dr. Ezugwu Samuel Ndubuisi (Department of Anatomy), Dr. Ugwuishi Emeka (Department of Physiology), and Dr. Nwafor Charles (Department of Physiology). Also suspended is ThankGod Chinonso Obi, a Medical Laboratory Science student accused of aiding and abetting the offenses.

The suspensions, effective from January 23, 2025, followed recommendations from the ESUT College of Medicine (ESUCOM) Disciplinary Committee, which were reviewed by the university’s Management Committee. The case has been referred to the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee for further investigation.

According to reports, the lecturers allegedly conspired with Obi, who served as a class representative, to solicit money from students in exchange for grade alterations. Sources revealed that Obi would inform students they had failed or received poor grades, pressuring them to pay for adjustments.

The university has assured that a thorough investigation will be conducted to ensure accountability and maintain academic integrity.

UCH Ibadan Resident Doctors Suspend Indefinite Strike

by Nelson Ugwuagbo February 19, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Resident doctors at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, have suspended the indefinite strike they embarked on a day earlier.

The General Secretary of the UCH Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), Uthman Adedeji, confirmed the development in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday night.

The doctors had commenced the strike on Monday in protest over the prolonged power outage in parts of the hospital’s residential quarters. Although the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) restored electricity to UCH last Wednesday following over 100 days of blackout, some residential areas remained disconnected.

Following the full restoration of power to all affected quarters, the association resolved to suspend the industrial action.

“Arising from the Emergency General Meeting (EGM) we just ended this Tuesday night, we now state that the total and indefinite strike embarked upon at 4:01 p.m. on Monday has been suspended,” Adedeji announced.

He added that work would resume at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, with all members expected to return to their duty posts.

Lagos Assembly Denies Defection of 27 Lawmakers to Labour Party

by Nelson Ugwuagbo February 19, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Lagos State House of Assembly has dismissed reports claiming that 27 lawmakers are planning to defect from the ruling party to the opposition Labour Party (LP), describing the allegations as false and misleading.

Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Strategy, and Security, Ogundipe Stephen, refuted the claims in a statement, labeling the reports as “entirely false, misleading, and a deliberate attempt to misinform the public.”

“We find this report not only offensive but also riddled with inaccuracies and outright falsehoods, serving no purpose other than to sow discord and confusion within the Assembly and among the good people of Lagos State,” the statement read.

The Assembly clarified that recent internal changes, including the removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa and the election of Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda as the new Speaker, were conducted in line with constitutional provisions and did not indicate any intention by members to defect.

“These events in no way suggest any intention by members to leave the party. We emphasize, without any ambiguity, that no member of the Assembly is contemplating defection,” the statement added.

Reaffirming its unity and commitment to governance under the ruling party, the Assembly described the reports as “falsehoods spread by agents of destabilization seeking to create unnecessary tension and division.”

“To our party leaders and supporters across the state, we assure you that all members remain committed to the party. Any internal disagreements within the House will be resolved amicably through peaceful and democratic means. There is no crisis warranting defection,” the statement stressed.

The Assembly also urged the media to adhere to journalistic ethics by verifying information before publication and called on the public to disregard the unfounded claims.

Father of Late Herbert Wigwe, Sues Granddaughter Over Property Dispute

by Nelson Ugwuagbo February 19, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Pastor Shyngle Wigwe, father of the late Herbert Wigwe, and Chukwuka Wigwe have filed an appeal challenging a Lagos State High Court ruling that denied their request for the appointment of interim administrators over the late banker’s estate.

The initial suit, filed before Justice A.O. Adeyemi, sought the appointment of an estate administrator to oversee the management of Herbert Wigwe’s assets. The defendants in the case include Uche Wigwe, Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, and Otutochi Wigwe, the 26-year-old daughter of the deceased.

During the proceedings, the claimants’ counsel requested that the case be heard in chambers, citing the involvement of minor children and referencing Section 128 of the Child Rights Law, 2007. However, the defense team, led by Paul Usoro SAN, objected, leading the court to conduct the hearing in open court.

On February 6, 2025, Justice Adeyemi ruled against the claimants’ application for interim administrators, stating that the requested reliefs were too similar to those sought in the main suit.

Following the ruling, Pastor Shyngle Wigwe filed an appeal on February 13, 2025, arguing that the court failed to differentiate between interim reliefs, intended to preserve the estate and provide for dependents, and final reliefs, which determine the distribution of assets.

In a related development, Pastor Wigwe has also initiated legal action against Independent Newspaper Ltd. (Suit No. ID/12372/GCMW/2024), seeking an injunction to prevent further media reports after a publication alleged he was seeking a 20% share of the inheritance.

The legal battle over the late Herbert Wigwe’s estate continues as the parties await further court proceedings.

National Assembly Cancels Passage of 2025 budget Over Errors

by Folarin Kehinde February 18, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The National Assembly has withdrawn the passage of the 2025 budget due to significant errors in allocations.

Both the Senate and the House of Representatives rescinded their decision on the appropriation bill passed on February 13, to correct discrepancies in capital and recurrent expenditures.

Despite the corrections, the total budget remains at N54.9 trillion. However, the capital expenditure has been reduced by more than N500 billion, while recurrent spending has increased by the same amount. Following these adjustments, the capital allocation now stands at N23.439 trillion, while recurrent expenditure has risen to N13.588 trillion. These figures differ from what was initially approved by lawmakers.

The decision to amend the budget followed a motion by Senator Adeola Olamilekan, Chairman of the Joint Committee on Appropriations, and Abubakar Kabir, Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee. The motion was easily agreed to by lawmakers who admitted that the errors needed urgent correction to ensure a more accurate distribution of resources.

When the budget was initially passed last week, N13.064 trillion had been allocated for recurrent expenditures, while capital projects received N23.963 trillion. The first breakdown of the N54.99 trillion proposal also included N3.645 trillion for statutory transfers and N14.317 trillion for debt servicing. The fiscal deficit stood at N13.08 trillion, with a deficit-to-GDP ratio of 1.52 per cent.

CBN Calls For Bank Directors With Non-Performing Insider Loans to Resign

by Nelson Ugwuagbo February 18, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has directed bank directors with non-performing insider-related loans to resign immediately.

The directive was issued on Monday in a circular signed by the Acting Director of Banking Supervision, Adetona Adedeji.

Insider-related loans refer to credit facilities extended by a financial institution to its own executives, directors, employees, major shareholders, or other related parties.

According to the CBN, the move aims to strengthen corporate governance and enhance risk management in the banking sector.

“Directors with non-performing insider-related facilities are required to step down immediately from the board, while the bank should commence immediate remediation of the loans through the recovery of collaterals, including the shareholdings of the affected directors,” the circular stated.

Citing Section 19 of the Banking and Other Financial Institutions Act (BOFIA) 2020, the apex bank directed all banks to implement specific measures regarding insider-related loans.

For insider-related facilities previously approved by the CBN without specific timelines, banks must regularize such loans within 180 days to align with the legal limits—individual director-related facilities must not exceed 5% of the bank’s paid-up capital, while the aggregate insider facilities for the bank should not surpass 10% of paid-up capital.

Additionally, loans granted with specific timelines must be regularized within the permitted period.

The CBN emphasized that banks must comply with these directives immediately to uphold regulatory standards and sound corporate governance practices.
